JUST IN: Babangida’s Son Declines Tinubu’s Appointment as Chairman, Bank of Agriculture

Muhammed Babangida, son of former Nigerian military president, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd), has formally declined his recent appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Chairman of the Bank of Agriculture. In a letter dated July 21, 2025, and addressed to the President, Babangida expressed profound appreciation for the honour bestowed on him but stated that personal and professional considerations would not allow him to serve the role effectively. “It is a true privilege to be thought worthy of such a strategic role in advancing the nation’s agricultural and economic development,” he wrote. “After careful reflection and consultation, I have decided, with utmost respect, to decline the appointment.” The letter, which was signed and made public, emphasized Babangida’s continued support for the administration of President Tinubu and his commitment to contributing to national development through other avenues. “I remain fully committed to the vision of a prosperous and self-sufficient Nigeria under your leadership. I continue to hold your administration in the highest regard and stand ready to support national development in other ways where my expertise may be of service,” he added. The decision is seen by many observers as a significant gesture of personal principle, especially given the strategic importance of the Bank of Agriculture in the current administration’s economic diversification agenda. As of the time of filing this report, the presidency has not issued a formal reaction to the declined appointment.

FG Lauds Makinde’s Commitment On Ijaye Agro-Industrial Hub As SAPZ, AFDB Visit Oyo

IBADAN – The Federal Government delegations that were on assessment visit to Oyo state have commended the state Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde over his commitment to the proposed Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone (SAPZ) project at Ijaye Atan Village Akinyele local government, Ibadan. Governor Makinde was commended by Dr. Oyebola Yejide Akande, the Assistant Director, African Financial Institutions, Federal Ministry of Finance, International Economic Relations Department, and the National Program Coordinator for the Nigeria Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ) program, Dr. Kabir Yusuf during an assessment visit to Atan Village, the site of the Ijaye Agro-industrial Processing Hub on Saturday, 19th, July 2025. Ijaye Agro-industrial Processing Hub upon completion will improve the lives of indigenous farmers in Oyo state l,. especially the farmers in Ijaye and it’s environs. The visiting team also include officials from the African Development Bank (AFDB) and were conducted round the site by the Acting State Coordinator for SAPZ, Dr Ajetunmobi Akinwumi, who represented the Director General of Oyo State Agribusiness Development Agency (OYSADA), Dr. Debo Akande alongside other personnel of the agency. In her interview with journalists shortly after the tour of the site, Dr. Oyebola Yejide Akande highlighted the importance of the assessment visit, noting that the team were on a supervision mission for the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ), Phase 1 states. She said, “We’ve been to Ogun State, Cross River, and now we are in Oyo State to assess the level of preparedness. The goal is to evaluate what infrastructure is already in place and what still needs to be developed. “Although some basic infrastructure already exists, which we refer to as “ground-fill” there are critical components that must still be built, such as the agro-industrial processing hub, Agricultural Transformation Centre (ATC), and the access roads that connect these hubs to surrounding communities. “For example, in Atan village, where the special agro-industrial processing hub will be sited, there’s a need for access roads to enable smooth transportation of produce and encourage private sector participation. Without good road access, it becomes difficult for investors and farmers to move goods in and out efficiently. “The state government has shown a strong level of commitment right from the start. Our role, alongside the Federal Government, which secured this loan on behalf of the state, is to ensure the people of Oyo State benefit from this initiative. “The essence of this collaboration is to improve livelihoods and promote inclusive development through agriculture. The arrangements under the SAPZ are designed to ensure that beneficiaries, especially those in rural farming communities are not shortchanged. They should be compensated fairly and rewarded in proportion to their contributions and involvement in farming activities.” In his remarks, Dr. Kabir Yusuf said, “We are here on a supervision mission with the African Development Bank and the Federal Ministry of Finance to assess the progress and evaluate how the funds disbursed so far have been utilized. “We recently visited Ijaye, where a massive agro-industrial park is being planned. It’s about 100 hectares in size. With the support of the state government, we’ve guided them through the procurement process for developing the zone, and that process has already been concluded. We’re here to ensure there are no encumbrances so that work can proceed smoothly. “We also visited the Fashola Agribusiness Hub, which has recently been designated by the state as an SAPZ zone. It’s a hub of various agricultural activities, dairy, cashew processing, greenhouse tomato production, cassava, and more. There’s already a joint MoU with FrieslandCampina WAMCO to develop the dairy value chain. “The overall goal of the SAPZ is to ensure that agricultural commodities are not only produced in Nigeria but also processed here to add value before export. What we’ve been doing in all the participating states is to focus on indigenous crops and commodities, and support states with funding to improve productivity and develop local processing capacity. “The aim is to produce finished goods that can go directly to the market shelves, which will help reduce and eventually eliminate the need to import agricultural products. This aligns perfectly with the administration’s ambition of transitioning Nigeria into a $1 trillion economy. In the next few years, we hope to be exporting many of these processed commodities and earning valuable foreign exchange. “The project is a collaboration between the Federal Government and the state government. The Federal Government has already disbursed funds, and procurement for contractors has been concluded. In fact, the government is considering August 2nd for the groundbreaking ceremony, though that’s still being finalized. Once that is done, the contractor will move to site and construction will begin in earnest.”From our perspective, this is a loan-based financing program provided to the state, and I must say the Oyo State government has followed the process judiciously. Governor Seyi Makinde has been extremely magnanimous and proactive. “What’s particularly commendable is that, after we agreed to concentrate the SAPZ loan financing on the Ijaye site, the Governor decided to use state funds to execute the development of the Eruwa agribusiness hub, which was initially meant to be part of the federal financing. That’s a novel and bold move. It shows the Governor’s strong commitment to agriculture and to the people. “The beauty of the SAPZ is that it aims to uplift citizens and eradicate rural poverty by transforming rural communities into economic hubs and secondary cities. There will be a lot of economic activity, value addition, and employment generated in these areas. I truly commend Governor Seyi Makinde for his vision, proactiveness, and dedication to sustainable agricultural development.” Kabir stressed. Other members of the AFDB on the assessment visit include, Engr. Ibrahim Bashir Gaya(Co-task Manager AFDB); Bernard Onzima (Principal Agro-Industry Officer AFDB), Dr. Emmanuel Chisesa (Regional Procurement Coordinator for AFDB Nigeria). The team also paid visit to Fasola Agro-industrial Processing Hub, and they’re expected to meet with the Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde to brief him about the outcome of their assessment visit.

Don’t Visit Edo Without Security Clearance – Okpebholo Warns Peter Obi

Don’t Visit Edo Without Security Clearance – Okpebholo Warns Peter Obi

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has warned that the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, must get security clearance before coming to the state. Obi had visited Benin, the state capital, on July 7 and donated N15m million to St Philomena Hospital School of Nursing Sciences for the completion of projects in the school. The governor, who spoke on Friday while receiving Marcus Onobun, the last remaining opposition federal lawmaker in the state, into the All Progressives Congress, condemned Obi’s visit to the state. He asserted that his visit coincided with the resurgence of violence in the state. “That man who says he has no ‘shishi’ came and dropped ₦15 million. Where did he get it from? After he left, three people were killed. For this reason, Obi must not come to Edo without security clearance. “His visit coincided with a resurgence of violence in the state and this will not be tolerated,” the governor stated. Speaking at the event, the governor described Onobun’s move to APC as the final nail in the coffin of the PDP in Edo State. He said that the APC is now firmly in control of Edo State, declaring that all traces of the opposition would be completely erased by the 2027 general elections. He added, “We are not lobbying anyone to join APC; they are coming because they see the results of our governance. In 2027, 2.5 million votes from Edo are guaranteed for President Bola Tinubu. “Last week, we finally buried the PDP in Edo State. I saw someone crying at Ring Road, talking about having 65 per cent. That is what we call social media winning. When I said I would become the Governor, I meant it. Today, we are turning Edo into a construction site, and they can see it,” he said. The governor further accused key opposition figures of deep-rooted corruption and mismanagement, claiming some of them were responsible for derailed national infrastructure projects and national insecurity. He said, “Some of them stole railway funds. Some were Senate Presidents for years and could not build roads to their villages. Some sold off Nigeria’s assets and even ushered in Boko Haram and kidnappers. These same people now want to form new parties. Today, SDP, tomorrow ADC, next ADA. We do not need insecurity merchants,” Okpebholo declared. Acting Deputy State Chairman of APC, Sylvester Aigboboh, said the defection is a major boost for the party, as it prepares for a major senatorial rerun election coming up next month. He said the remnants in the PDP are expected to join the ruling APC in the coming months, as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections. In his remarks, Onobun, who represents Esan Central/Esan West/Igueben Federal Constituency, said that his defection was both ideological and strategic. “I led the campaign for an Esan Governor. Now that we have one, I cannot be in the opposition. I have seen what Governor Okpebholo is doing; Edo people have seen it. I am back home to support him so that our people can get more,” he said. Onobun was accompanied into the APC by a host of former APC members who had earlier defected with him to the PDP. Their return, observers say, is a major consolidation of political strength ahead of future electoral contests in the State. Punch

It reads, “The Borno State Police Command wishes to inform the general public of the safe receipt and successful reunion of two courageous boys with their families, following their escape from Boko Haram captivity after four years of captivity. “After months of planning, the two boys took advantage of an opportunity to escape on the night of 8th July, 2025, when most of the terrorists had gone out on operations. Buhari’s Remains Arrive Katsina Airport

The remains of former President Muhammadu Buhari arrived at the Umar Musa Yar’adua Airport in Katsina State on Tuesday. A delegation led by President Bola Tinubu was at the airport to receive the body of the late former President, which was conveyed by the Nigerian Air Force aircraft. At the airport are governors, ministers, National Assembly members and other government officials. Buhari’s body departed London in the United Kingdom for Daura, hometown of the ex-President, ahead of a state burial in his honour. Tinubu received the remains of the former President in Katsina, ahead of his final interment. The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed this on Monday during a press briefing in Abuja. According to Idris, the body of the former president, who died on Sunday in a London hospital, is expected to arrive in Nigeria by noon on Tuesday. “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, will personally receive the remains of the former President in Katsina. “Upon arrival in Katsina, a brief military ceremony will be held at the airport before the body is moved to Daura. “The Jana’iza (funeral prayer) will take place thereafter, followed by interment at the late President’s residence,” Idris said. The minister said as part of national mourning, Tinubu has directed that condolence registers be opened across all Federal Ministries, Departments and Agencies, as well as at Nigerian embassies and missions abroad. He said another register is to be opened at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja. Idris also noted that world leaders have continued to send in condolence messages. “The condolences coming in from Heads of State and Governments across the globe are a testament to the global stature and legacy of President Muhammadu Buhari,” he said. To ensure what he described as a “dignified and well-coordinated programme,” Idris said the President has constituted an Inter-Ministerial Committee chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume. The committee will work in collaboration with the Katsina State Government and the Buhari family. The minister further announced that 25 members of the Federal Executive Council have been directed to proceed to Katsina for the burial rites and to remain in Daura for the Third-Day prayers scheduled for Wednesday.
