Perez Seeks Re-election as Real Madrid President

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez on Tuesday called club elections and announced that he would stand again. “I am not going to resign,” the 79-year-old Perez told a press conference towards the end of a season in which Real Madrid will finish trophyless. Barcelona defeated Real Madrid 2-0 in the Clasico at Camp Nou on Sunday to claim back-to-back La Liga titles with three games to spare. Madrid bowed out of the Champions League with a quarter-final exit against Bayern Munich. Current Real coach Alvaro Arbeloa, who replaced Xabi Alonso in January, is unlikely to remain at the helm next season and former Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has been linked with a potential return. This season has seen Madrid finish without a major trophy for a second year running. Fans have been protesting against star player Kylian Mbappe for a perceived lack of commitment, while there are stories of multiple training ground bust-ups, including one that sent midfielder Fede Valverde to the hospital. Perez justified his bid for a new term in response to what he dubbed an “absurd campaign” against Real Madrid. “I’ve made this decision because an absurd situation has been created to generate a tide of opinion against the interests of Real Madrid,” argued Perez. “I’ve been here 26 years, and it’s been a wonderful time.” Perez took aim at media campaigns and other personalities, claiming they were taking advantage of this season’s poor results to target him personally. “I want to put an end to this anti-Madrid current that wants to destroy Real Madrid,” he said. “I’m standing for re-election to return the club’s assets to its members. “If anyone wants to run, they shouldn’t just pretend — let them run, but let them say what they’re going to do, how they’re going to finance everything.” Perez added: “They say out there that Real Madrid is a problem case, but it’s the most prestigious club in the world.” But he admitted that he was as frustrated as the rest of Madrid’s fans about the lack of trophies for the second consecutive year and also about the altercation between Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni. “I think it is very bad and I think it’s even worse that it was made public,” Perez said of the clash, which ended with both players being fined 500,000 euros. Perez added that he and his backers were putting together a 500-page dossier that he will send to UEFA over allegations of corruption in Spanish refereeing. “It’s the most serious case of corruption in football,” he said. “I’ve only won seven Champions League titles and seven league titles, when I could have won 14 because the others were stolen from me.” Barcelona are currently being investigated by Spanish authorities in a sports corruption case after paying the former vice-president of Spain’s refereeing committee (CTA), Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira, seven million euros ($8.3 million) over several years. The club deny any wrongdoing.

Impeached Madagascar President Confirms Fleeing Country After Coup

Madagascar’s ousted president confirmed for the first time that he had fled the country, issuing a statement after a military-led power grab prompted by weeks of demonstrations that have plunged the island nation into crisis. President Andry Rajoelina left between October 11 and 12 after “explicit and extremely serious threats were made against the life of the Head of State,” the presidency said in a statement late Wednesday. The threats had come when he was due to travel abroad for a mission, the statement sent to AFP said. Media reports indicated the 51-year-old leader was evacuated on Sunday aboard a French military plane. On Monday, he said he had taken refuge in a “safe place” without giving further details. Rajoelina, who first came to power after a military-backed coup in 2009, accused the National Assembly of colluding with the military to remove him from office. The military officers who seized power said their leader, Colonel Michael Randrianirina, would be sworn in as new president on Friday. The youth-led Gen Z movement that initiated the protests on September 25 over the lack of water and energy welcomed Randrianirina’s intervention. The international community voiced alarm, with the United Nations censuring what it called an “unconstitutional” takeover and the African Union announcing Wednesday it was suspending Madagascar “with immediate effect”. Madagascar is the latest of several former French colonies to have fallen under military control since 2020, after coups in Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Gabon and Guinea. AFP

ASUU Ready to Resume Talks With FG — President

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has expressed readiness to resume negotiations with the Federal Government to end the ongoing strike, saying it has received signals from government officials indicating willingness to restart talks. ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, disclosed this on Monday during an interview on Channels Television, where he reaffirmed the union’s commitment to dialogue as the only path to resolving the lingering industrial dispute. ASUU had on Sunday declared a comprehensive two-week strike, suspending academic work across public universities, citing unresolved demands that have lingered for years. In response, the Federal Government argued that it has met ASUU’s demands and has labelled the strike unjustifiable. Further complicating matters, the government threatened to enforce a “no work, no pay” policy, intending to withhold salaries of lecturers who fail to resume work. However, the Nigeria Labour Congress condemned the threat, warning that such a move would undermine fair negotiation and the right of workers to collective bargaining. The labour body also pledged its support for ASUU in its call for improved conditions in the university system. Despite the tense exchanges, Piwuna said the union was encouraged by renewed contact from top government officials seeking a resolution. “Today, I received a call from Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, Chairman of the Federal Government Team, and he’s eager to resume talks with us. I also received another call from the Minister of State for Labour, stating that she’s been directed to intervene and get this matter resolved. ASUU is willing. We are ready and available to discuss this matter once and for all,” Piwuna said. He added that the union expected official communication from the Implementation and Labour Monitoring Committee between Monday night and Tuesday, noting that ASUU would immediately honour any invitation to the negotiation table. “My understanding, as I’m talking to you now, is that between this night and tomorrow, I will get a communication from the secretary of the IALM Committee for a meeting at a date that they will tell us. And I would also hear from the Minister of Labour on what they want to do to resolve this matter. We are ready and willing to go back and talk,” he said. Piwuna, however, emphasised that the strike action was never an easy choice for the union but a last resort to press home demands that had lingered for years. “Strike has never been an option that we exercise so freely. We are willing to talk about all these issues,” he stated. Reacting to the Minister of Education’s recent remarks that all outstanding issues with the union had been resolved, Piwuna challenged the government to clarify why further meetings were being arranged if no unresolved matters remained. He said, “Since the minister has said all the problems have been solved, that there is nothing left, I want Nigerians to ask the Ministry of Labour and the Federal Government negotiating team: if the issues have been solved, why are you going back to talk with ASUU? Are lecturers in LASU or Kogi State University still not being victimised? Has the 2009 agreement been concluded?” The ASUU president reiterated that both lecturers and students were victims of government inaction, stressing that the union’s goal was to restore stability and quality in Nigeria’s public university system through sincere dialogue. “Nigerian students and academic staff union of universities are victims of governments. They are victims of governments in action and several other things. So we see ourselves as victims of this government, the way students see themselves as victims of what is going on,” he said. Already, several universities, including Olabisi Onabanjo University, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Tai Solarin University of Education, and the University of Ibadan, have joined the industrial action, grounding lectures and other academic operations on their campuses.

I’ll Sustain Demand For University Autonomy — ASUU President

The current National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, says that he and his administration will sustain the demand for university autonomy. This was even as his immediate predecessor, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, stated that poor treatment of university lecturers is responsible for academics japa. Prof. Christopher Piwuna, who is a Nigerian Professor of Medicine and currently the 14th National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, stated this on Monday during a reception organized for the immediate past President of ASUU by Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike chapter of the union. Prof. Piwuna promised “I will sustain the demand for university autonomy, academic freedom and other general conducive environment for ASUU members”, stating that strike action is a universal tool that can not be taken off the table, but only applied if the government fails to honour its agreements with ASUU.” “ASUU struggle is a collective one that concern the lecturers, students and the parents. Strike is a universal tool that is not perculier to Nigeria alone. It is a toll that is used all over and can not be taken off the table, but we hope that we don’t have to embark on any action before we can get what we want,” he said. Also speaking, the Chairperson of ASUU in Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, MOUAU branch, Chike Ugwuene, extolled the former President of ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, for making MOUAU and the nation proud, adding that there is harmony now between the management of MOUAU and ASUU in Umudike. “He served the nation and made ASUU MOUAU proud by fighting for the the betterment of education system in Nigeria. There is harmony between ASUU MOUAU and the university management. The management is cooperating with us but don’t be surprised that if anything goes wrong, we will still ask for our rights and for the betterment of the society”, she said Receiving the former ASUU President, the Vice Chancellor of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Professor Maduebibisi Iwe, who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor(Academics), Prof. Nneoma Obasi said his university is proud of the roles Prof. Osodeke played as President of ASUU, stating that MOUAU stood by Osodeke “throughout his sleepless nights of endless negotiations.” In his speech, Prof. Osodeke said under his leadership, the union fought several battles to keep education alive during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari and former Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige. According to him, “Ngige’s rough relationship with ASUU created a lot of confusion in the country,” which he said, would have collapsed the education system if not for ASUU’s resilience. Professor Osodeke said that the poor treatment of university lecturers was responsible for the exodus (japa) of Nigerian academics to the United States, Europe and Saudi Arabia, adding, “We encountered a lot of difficulties during the era of Ex- President Muhammadu Buhari, anchored by Chris Ngige who created a lot of confusion when we were struggling for the good of our education system.” “Our struggles have kept our public Universities where they are today and saved them from collapsing like other public institutions like Nigerian Airways and Nigerian refineries,” and explained that ASUU was able to achieve the removal of Universities from the IPPS system, while a number of Professors now retire with their full pay. He noted that ASUU’s struggle is a collective initiative for the interests of lecturers, students and their parents, regretting, “public universities still offer quality education more than private ones”, stating that 95% of university students’ population in Nigeria are still found in public universities. The Pro Chancellor/Chairman, Governing Council of MOUAU, Felix Edeh, represented the Visitor to the University, President Bola Ahmed, while a former National President of ASUU, Isa Nasir Fagee, was the chairman of the occasion. Impeached South Korean President Yoon In Court Again For Hearings On Removal

South Korea’s impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol, who has been arrested and suspended from duties over his declaration of martial law, was in court again Tuesday for hearings to decide whether to remove him from office officially. Yoon, a former prosecutor, plunged democratic South Korea into political turmoil when he declared martial law on December 3, suspending civilian rule and sending soldiers to parliament. His attempt to impose martial law only lasted around six hours as the opposition-led parliament defied armed troops to vote it down and later impeached him over the move. As part of a separate criminal probe, Yoon was detained in a dawn raid in mid-January on insurrection charges, becoming the first sitting South Korean head of state to be arrested. He is being held in detention but has been attending impeachment hearings at the Constitutional Court, which will determine whether his impeachment is upheld. If the court upholds the impeachment, an election must be held within 60 days to elect a new president. A convoy of black SUVs arrived at the court Tuesday, carrying Yoon to attend a hearing scheduled to begin at 2:00 pm (0500 GMT). At previous hearings, Yoon denied instructing top military commanders to “drag out” lawmakers from parliament to prevent them from voting down his decree, a claim refuted by opposition MPs. He has argued that he did not believe the short-lived martial law was a “failed martial law”, but rather one that “ended a bit sooner” than he expected. During Tuesday’s hearing, two former military commanders and an ex-spy agency official are set to testify as witnesses. Hong Jang-won, a former deputy director of the National Intelligence Service, testified before lawmakers that he had been ordered to arrest politicians — a claim that contradicts Yoon’s denial of such an order. Yoon, 64, was indicted in January, with prosecutors accusing him of being a “ringleader of the insurrection”. He faces a separate criminal trial on those charges. Insurrection is not covered by presidential immunity. If convicted, he faces jail time or the death penalty. AFP

Anti-Tinubu Comments: ACF Suspends Chairman As Afenifere, Others Back President

The Arewa Consultative Forum on Thursday suspended its chairman Mamman Osuman following widespread reactions across the country, after the northern body’s criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s policies, saying it had impoverished the North. The ACF, in a statement, added that the interests of the North would be best represented by northerners. However, Yoruba socio-political Afenifere, Igbo socio-cultural body Ohanaeze Ndigbo and other regional groups backed the President insisting his predecessor Muhammadu Buhari laid the marker for the hardship in the country. In a communiqué issued at the conclusion of the forum’s National Executive Council meeting in Kaduna on Wednesday, the ACF expressed dissatisfaction with the current economic policies, which, according to the forum, worsened conditions in Northern Nigeria. The communiqué, signed by ACF’s National Publicity Secretary, Prof. Tukur Muhammad-Baba, also called on the President to review and reassess his administration’s economic policies to ensure they are more compassionate, considering the current hardships Nigerians are enduring. “I do admit that some policies of the current administration are repugnant and adverse to our interests as a region,” Osuman stated. “A sizeable number of our brothers and sisters in the region have demonstrated proclivity towards politics and political offices come 2027. They are already focusing on the 2027 elections.” However, the ACF in a shock U-Turn, suspended Osuman in a letter signed by its Secretary-General, Murtala Aliyu. The letter stated, “The attention of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has been drawn to widely reported statements credited to Mr. Mamman Mike Osuman, SAN, OFR, Chairman, ACF National Executive Committee, which were made during the meeting of the NEC, held on Wednesday, November, 2024, at ACF Headquarters, Kaduna. “In particular, Mr. Osuman was quoted as saying that the North will back a northern candidate for the Presidency, come 2027.The statements were made by the NEC chairman without consulting or discussing with other leaders and members of the ACF and thus, reflected Mr. Osuman’s personal opinion only. “ACF rejects Mr. Mamman Mike Osuman’s statements in their entirety. For this reason, the leadership of the ACF’s Board of Trustees (BOT) and that of its NEC has decided to place Mr. Mamman Mike Osuman on suspension with immediate effect. “A committee has been constituted for further investigations.” Reacting, the Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, said, “There is no need for the President to have a say because they (ACF) are calling for an Arewa person to run for President. That means the Arewa person can run from any political party.” He added, “The simple answer is that we don’t want to heat up the polity. We have not gotten to the point where people will be talking about 2027. We are focused on providing good governance to Nigeria,” Bwala added. The presidential spokesman said Tinubu was dedicated to tackling critical challenges currently facing the country, pointing to his recent participation in the G20 Summit in Brazil. “The President is very much committed to ensuring we deal with hunger, extreme hunger and climate change problem. That is why he flew to Brazil to interface with the G20 dealing with global governance reform, and the global governance reform has now come up with a focus. “The focus is on hunger, poverty, and climate change. That is what the President is focused on. The President is not focused on 2027.” APC backs Tinubu Additionally, the ruling All Progressives Congress criticised the ACF, stating that while the group has the right to express its opinion, it cannot claim to speak for the entire North. The National Publicity Director of the APC, Bala Ibrahim, said, “This has always been the position of the ACF. They have always been advocating and clamouring for their own. The ACF is not a political party. It is an association. It is more like a sociocultural organisation. But now that they have come out clearly to say they are not going to back a non-Northern candidate come 2027, so be it. “But it is too early to talk about crossing the river when you have not gotten to the point of getting to the bridge. We agree that in politics or under democracy, people have the right to opinion. The position of the ACF is not against the provision of democracy or the constitution. They can clamour and ask for people to vote for their own. But the choice to do that rests on the people. “As long as they are not going to insist on forcing people to choose who to vote for, we don’t have any quarrel with that. In any case, let them wait and see for the party to present a candidate.” On his part, the National Publicity Secretary, Labour Party, Obiora Ifoh, stated that if the ACF had truly been monitoring the political landscape over the past decade, it would recognise that the issue was not related to tribe or geopolitical zone. “A northerner was in government for eight years and the North cried wolf. Nothing got better in the North. There was inflation in the North just as it was in the South. When Goodluck Jonathan, a southern President was there, he built schools and took care of the Almajiri. But when the northern President came, all those things were set aside. “There was hunger and inflation in the country. Another Southern president p is on the saddle. However, I want to believe that after one year and six months or thereabouts that Tinubu has been in government, he ought to have started changing the narratives. Unfortunately, nothing good is coming out of it. What does that tell you? “It simply tells you that it’s not about the person in government coming from North or South. It is not about the geographical location of the leader. It’s about the capacity of who you have entrusted the leadership of the country to. The Labour Party brought out the best candidate in 2023 and up to this moment, we still refer to him as the president Nigeria … Read more

Tinubu Directs Police To Provide Security To LG Offices In Rivers

President Bola Tinubu has called on Governor Siminalayi Fubara, political leaders and their supporters in Rivers State to exercise restraint and uphold the rule of law. In response to recent tensions following last Saturday’s local government council election, the President expressed deep concern over reports of arson and explosions in the state. He urged all political actors to de-escalate the situation and discourage their supporters from engaging in violence or destructive actions. President Tinubu directed the police to restore and maintain peace, law, and order immediately. While instructing law enforcement agencies to bring the situation under control, he emphasised the need to ensure the security of public institutions. President Tinubu said government facilities built with public funds must be safeguarded from vandalism. He stressed that self-help has no place in a democratic system, especially after 25 years of continuous democracy. According to President Tinubu, the judiciary can settle all political disputes, and the outcome of this election should be no exception.

From Governor Seyi Makinde (GSM) To President Seyi Makinde(PSM): 2027 Perspective

Wale Ajani Governor Seyi Makinde’s performance in Oyo State can be measured through specific indicators: As Nigeria approaches the 2027 presidential election, the political landscape is charged with discussions about potential candidates. Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State stands out as a compelling contender, supported by a track record of governance characterized by empirical data and logical reasoning. His achievements in various sectors, combined with a clear contrast to the current APC administration’s challenges, position him favorably for both the PDP primaries and the general election 1. Infrastructure Development: The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reports a 30% increase in infrastructure projects in Oyo State since Makinde took office in 2019. Key projects include major road reconstructions that have improved connectivity, resulting in an average 15% reduction in travel times. This contrasts sharply with the APC-led federal government, which has faced criticism for a decline in road construction rates, as reported by the World Bank. 2. Healthcare Access: The introduction of the Oyo State Health Insurance Scheme has led to a *”40% increase in healthcare access*”, covering over **300,000 residents**. In comparison, a recent survey indicates that **70% of Nigerians** still lack access to basic healthcare services under the current federal administration, illustrating a significant gap in healthcare provision. 3. Educational Advancements: Data from the National Education Data Survey (NEDS) reveals that Oyo State has improved primary school enrollment rates by **25%** since Makinde’s administration began. Conversely, national data under the APC government shows a **10% decrease** in secondary school enrollment rates, largely due to rising costs and inadequate funding. 4. Economic Sustainability: One of Makinde’s notable achievements is the **timely payment of salaries** to state workers, maintained at **100% compliance** throughout his tenure. This practice contributes to local economic stability, as evidenced by increased consumer spending in the region. In contrast, reports indicate that **40% of state workers** in some regions under APC rule have experienced salary delays of up to three months. 5. Student Support Initiatives: Makinde’s administration has launched scholarship programs benefiting over **5,000 students**, aimed at reducing financial burdens and increasing higher education enrollment by **20%**. In contrast, the APC government has struggled to implement effective nationwide educational support, contributing to rising dropout rates. 6. Human Capital Development: The governor has prioritized vocational training and skill acquisition, with over **10,000 residents** participating in these programs. This focus addresses unemployment and enhances economic productivity, contrasting sharply with the national youth unemployment rate of **33%** under the APC administration. Strategic Political Positioning Makinde’s political strategy within the PDP enhances his candidacy, supported by empirical data: 1. Party Loyalty and Unity: A poll by the African Polling Institute indicates that **65% of PDP members** view Makinde favorably for fostering party unity. In contrast, only **40% of APC members** express confidence in their leadership due to ongoing internal divisions. 2. Regional Influence: The Southwest region accounts for approximately **15% of Nigeria’s total registered voters**. Makinde’s prominence in this region has resulted in a **40% increase in party membership** since 2021. Meanwhile, APC support in the region has declined, with a **20% decrease in voter registration** linked to dissatisfaction with federal governance. 3. Youth Engagement: With over **50% of Nigeria’s population** under 30, engaging youth is critical. Makinde’s youth empowerment programs have led to a **35% increase in youth participation** in governance initiatives. In contrast, a Gallup poll shows that **60% of respondents aged 18-30** express disillusionment with the current administration, largely due to unaddressed unemployment issues. A Vision for Nigeria Makinde’s vision for Nigeria is both ambitious and grounded in empirical reasoning: 1. Economic Diversification: The World Bank projects that Nigeria could achieve **6% annual economic growth** through diversification away from oil dependency. Makinde’s focus on agriculture and technology is supported by studies indicating that investments in these sectors could create millions of jobs. In contrast, the APC’s reliance on oil revenue has resulted in an average GDP growth rate of only **2%** over the past three years. 2. Security and Stability: Rising security challenges require effective leadership. Makinde’s proactive governance has resulted in a **20% decrease in crime rates** in Oyo State. In comparison, the APC government has struggled with a **40% rise in violent incidents** nationwide since 2021, as reported by the Nigeria Security Tracker. 3. Good Governance and Accountability: Transparency International ranks Nigeria poorly in corruption perception, with the country falling to **150th out of 180** in the Corruption Perceptions Index. Makinde’s commitment to transparency and accountability enhances his appeal among citizens disillusioned by corruption and mismanagement. In conclusion, as the 2027 presidential election approaches, Governor Seyi Makinde’s combination of empirical governance achievements, strategic political positioning, and an inspiring vision for Nigeria positions him as a formidable candidate for both the PDP primaries and the general election. His ability to connect with the electorate through data-driven policies and transparent governance establishes him not just as a candidate but as a viable alternative to the current administration’s challenges. In a time when the nation seeks transformative leadership, Seyi Makinde stands ready to answer that call, representing the aspirations of millions of Nigerians.
