Adeleke Dissolves, Reconstitutes UNIOSUN Governing Council

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has dissolved the Governing Council of Osun State University (UNIOSUN) and constituted a new council as part of efforts to enhance the institution’s governance and administrative effectiveness. The governor, in a statement issued on Friday in Osogbo, said the move was aimed at ensuring continuity in the administration of the university and preventing any gap in its operations. The newly constituted council is chaired by Sooko (Prof.) Adewale Abiodun Oladipo as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman. Oladipo was also the chairman of the dissolved council. Other members of the new council are Alhaji Gbadegesin Lawal; Her Excellency, Otunba Titi Laoye-Ponnle; Mr Akinola Franklin Omoniyi; Chief Funminiyi Awotide; Mr Orija Samuel Adebayo; and Mrs Adewale Adetayo Bola. Adeleke charged the new council to build on the university’s achievements and provide the necessary support for its continued growth. The governor specifically tasked the council to “sustain the excellent record of the University” and “support the university management for further innovative deliveries.” The reconstitution, according to the statement, is also intended to “avoid gaps in the operation of the globally rated university.” The inauguration of the new Governing Council will take place on Monday, August 31, 2026.

Adeleke Sets Up 10-Man Committee to Investigate Election Violence, Calls for Petitions

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has inaugurated a committee on election violence victims to verify claims made by individuals affected by election-related violence. The committee will also oversee the disbursement of the N500 million Election Violence Victims Relief Endowment Fund provided by the State Government. A statement by the spokesperson to the governor, Olawale Rasheed, obtained in Osogbo on Monday said the committee, which is chaired by the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, will undertake a transparent and credible verification process to establish genuine claims and ensure that relief reaches deserving victims. According to the statement, membership of the committee include; “Adewale Olumide Egbedun — chairman, Mrs Eniola Omotoso — member, Mr Emmanuel Olowu— representative of Civil Society Organisations, –member, Alhaja Balkiss Akinleye — member, nominee of the Nigeria Police Force — member, Alhaji Moshood Suleiman (Ministry of Information) — member, Moses Faremi Esq (Ministry of Justice) – member, nominee of the Department of State Services (DSS) — member, Hon. Yemi Lawal — Member, Mr Sola Sonibare, Executive Secretary, Osun Investment Promotion Agency — Secretary.” The statement added, “The committee is mandated to receive and verify petitions, claims and supporting evidence submitted by victims; determine the eligibility of claimants; and recommend appropriate relief to verified victims in accordance with the guidelines approved by the State Government.” The government said the initiative underscores Adeleke’s commitment to supporting citizens who suffered losses, injuries, displacement or other forms of hardship as a result of election-related violence. It therefore enjoined “All affected persons with genuine claims to cooperate with the committee by providing accurate information and relevant evidence necessary for the verification process. “The committee is expected to ensure that the ₦500 million relief fund is administered transparently, fairly and strictly for the benefit of verified victims.”

The PUNCH Online reports that Adeleke, contesting on the platform of the Accord Party, won a re-election into office for a second term, having polled 511,067 votes against the APC’s candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, who had 444,815 votes. BREAKING: INEC Declares Adeleke Winner of Osun Governorship Election

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, was on Sunday declared the winner of the governorship election after securing victory in 19 of the state’s 30 local government areas in Saturday’s poll. The State Returning Officer, the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye Ekiti, Prof Joshua Ogunwole, declared the result of the poll at about 7:24 am on Sunday. Adeleke polled a total of 511067 votes to emerge victorious in the contest. Ogunwole subsequently returned the governor to office for another term. The incumbent Osun governor, who contested the poll on the platform of the Accord, defeated his closest challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress, who won in 11 LG areas of the state. While Adeleke won in Ede North, Ede South, Ejigbo, Iwo, Egbedore, Ife North, Ife East, Ife Central, Oriade, Ifelodun, Orolu, Ayedaade, Ayedire, Odo Otin, Boluwaduro, Ilesa West, Ifedayo, Osogbo and Ayedire local government areas. Oyebamiji, however, won in Irewole, Isokan, Olorunda, Atakumosa East, Atakumosa West, Ilesa East, Boripe, Irepodun and Obokun local government areas. Declaring the results, Ogunwole said, “Accredited voters, 1010684, total votes received by political parties, A, 511067, AA, 2308, AAC, 1458, ADC, 17180, ADP, 2946, APC, 444815, APGA, 1475, APM, 234, APP, 114, BP, 111, NNPP, 118, PRP, 83, SDP, 155, YPP, 534, ZLP, 2482, total valid votes, 985079, rejected votes, 207, total vote cast, 1,005,800.” After agents of the political parties have signed the results of the election, the Returning Officer declared Adeleke of the Accord as the winner of the poll. “That Ademola Nurudeen-Jackson Adeleke having satisfied the requirements of the law is hereby declare the winner of the August 15 Governorship election and returned elected,” Ogunwole said. The candidate of the African Democratic Congress in the poll, Najeem Salaam, came third in the poll.

Adeleke alleges arrest of Osun PDP chairman, demands immediate release

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has condemned the reported arrest of the state chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Sunday Bisi, and demanded his immediate release. Adeleke, in a statement posted on his official X account on Saturday, alleged that Bisi was arrested at his home in Ilesa shortly after voting in the ongoing Osun governorship election. It was signed by the governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed. The governor described the arrest as an abuse of law enforcement and an attack on the democratic process. “Information reaching me indicates that Bisi was accosted in his home in Ilesa shortly after he returned after voting, and whisked away to a yet-to-be-known location. “Up till this moment, no one has been availed the reason for his arrest, which indicates that the APC is working in cohort with compromised security agents to keep people away from monitoring results at the various collation centres,” Adeleke said. Adeleke further alleged that the arrest was part of a broader attempt to interfere with the collation of results, although he did not provide evidence to substantiate the claim. “This latest sweep on my supporters, I have authoritatively learnt, is part of a broader plan to give the APC unhindered access to change results at collation centres and upturn our wins at the poll. “This is the biggest assault on democracy, and I urge everyone involved in this desperate attempt to upturn the will of our people through the use of state institutions,” he said. The governor called for Bisi’s immediate release, describing the arrest as political and also demanding the release of what he referred to as other “political prisoners” across the state. “In that regard, I am calling for the immediate release of Hon. Bisi because his arrest is nothing but political and other political prisoners across Osun state,” Adeleke said. He added, “Election should be about the people freely giving their mandates to the person of their choice without threat or force.” At the time of the statement, Adeleke said the whereabouts of the PDP chairman were unknown and that no reason had been given for his arrest. Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has declared Friday, August 14, 2026, a work-free day for public servants across the state to enable them prepare for Saturday’s governorship election. The declaration was contained in a circular issued by the Head of Service, Elder Ayanleye Aina and posted by the Spokesperson to the state governor, the Olawale Rasheed on X on Wednesday. According to the circular, the decision was taken to enable workers who need to travel to do so and prepare to exercise their constitutional right to vote in the election. The government said all categories of workers are covered by the declaration, except those engaged in emergency and essential duties. Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has defended the decision to site the proposed Ede International Airport in his hometown, arguing that his position as governor should not prevent him from developing his own community. He spoke on Tuesday at a town hall meeting organised by Arise Television for candidates contesting Saturday’s Osun governorship election. Adeleke, who is seeking re-election on the platform of the Accord Party, was responding to questions on the controversial airport project, which has drawn criticism from opposition parties over its cost and location. “I wish my town to be small London. So because I’m a governor, I should abandon my own town? Go and fact-check it. I just told you I just came back from Ife. Am I from Ife? I’m from Ede,” he said. When we’re about to build this airport, I said this is not acceptable. In the South-West, we are the only state without an airport. So I invited experts to go and look for a suitable site,” he said. Adeleke said the experts who scouted for a location eventually settled for Ede, adding that the choice mirrored precedents in other states, including Ogun State, where he said the airport was sited on farmland in Abeokuta. “They went around, and they ended up in Ede. Go to Ogun State; the airport is on farmland in Abeokuta. It’s the same thing. There’s nothing I can do about that,” he said. The Ede airport project, initially awarded at N99.5bn, has faced backlash from the All Progressives Congress and the Allied Peoples Movement, whose governorship candidates have questioned the technical capacity of the contractor and the rising cost of the project, now put at over N130bn. The All Progressives Congress (APC) has urged Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke to stop blaming President Bola Tinubu and leaders of the ruling party for his political difficulties ahead of the August 15 governorship election, saying he should instead defend his performance in office. APC National Secretary, Ajibola Bashiru, made the call while speaking with journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, in response to comments by Adeleke at a campaign rally in Osogbo, where the governor accused political opponents of orchestrating violence in the state and appealed to Tinubu to intervene. Adeleke had alleged that extrajudicial killings were taking place in Osun and urged the President not to turn a blind eye to the situation. “President Bola Tinubu, something is happening in Osun that you have not moved to put an end to. They are killing our people. You are the President; you are the father for all of us. Osun has said they won’t allow rigging,” the governor was quoted as saying. He also warned against any attempt to manipulate the outcome of the election, drawing parallels with the political crisis that engulfed the old Western Region in 1983. “There won’t be rigging in Osun. Remember what happened in 1983. It started in Yorubaland when they cheated Bola Ige and Michael Ajasin. Osun will not agree. We want a free and fair election. The APC scribe said it was surprising that a sitting governor was already raising fears of election rigging nearly two weeks before the poll. “How can a sitting governor be crying about rigging in an election that is still about 11 days away, when in politics even 24 hours is enough to change the dynamics?” he asked. According to Bashiru, Adeleke’s comments reflected anxiety over what he described as the growing popularity of the APC and its governorship candidate, Munirudeen Oyebamiji, popularly known as AMBO. He argued that the governor should instead account for his administration’s performance, alleging that several roads across the state remained in poor condition while the education sector continued to suffer from a shortage of about 30,000 teachers. “If those roads had been fixed, they would have stimulated economic activities across the state. If the shortage of teachers had been addressed, thousands of jobs would have been created while improving the quality of education,” he said. They amount to nothing more than an attempt to justify his imminent defeat in the forthcoming governorship election,” Olabisi said. It also accused the governor of granting questionable amnesty to convicted political thugs and appointing some of them to public offices. “The discerning public deserves to know why, just days before the governorship election, the governor has allegedly been granting questionable amnesty to dangerous political thugs serving various jail terms in correctional centres across the state,” the statement read in part. The APC further argued that Adeleke’s endorsement of Tinubu’s 2027 presidential ambition was voluntary and should not be used as a basis for seeking political concessions. “Why the worry if it is true that Governor Adeleke has performed well? The August 15 governorship election will provide the electorate with the opportunity to assess his claims,” Olabisi added. Osun State will hold its governorship election on August 15, with Governor Adeleke of the Accord Party seeking a second term against the APC candidate, Bola Oyebamiji. The campaign has been marked by accusations and counter-accusations between the two major parties over political violence, security concerns and alleged attempts to influence the electoral process.
