Phyna Celebrates BBNaija Win Anniversary After Making Boxing History

Big Brother Naija winner, Phyna, has celebrated the fourth anniversary of her reality TV victory after making history as the winner of Nigeria’s first female celebrity boxing bout. Phyna, whose real name is Ijeoma Otabor, won the seventh season of Big Brother Naija, Level Up, on October 2, 2022. Four years later, she marked the anniversary with another major victory after defeating Nollywood actress Nkechi Blessing by knockout. Reflecting on both milestones in a post shared on Friday, Phyna wrote, “October 2nd will forever be a special date in my life. “Today marks the anniversary of the day I won BBN, and now, years later, I’m celebrating another historic victory becoming the first female boxer to step into this ring and win this fight.” The boxing victory came during Balmoral Promotions’ Chaos in the Ring event at the Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, on Thursday. Phyna said her transition from reality television to boxing reflected her determination to challenge herself and break barriers. “From reality TV to the boxing ring, I’ve always been willing to challenge myself, break barriers, and prove that there is so much more to Phyna than what people see,” she wrote. “This one is for every woman who has ever been told she couldn’t. We can. We will. And we absolutely should.” She thanked Balmoral Promotions and Bet9ja for the opportunity, describing October 2 as “a date of victory, courage and new beginnings.” Phyna reportedly received ₦50 million for winning the bout and has indicated plans to pursue professional boxing, suggesting that her victory could mark the beginning of a new career in the sport. Following the fight, she named Nollywood actress Etinosa Idemudia as a potential next opponent, alleging that the actress had been disturbing her through direct messages. “I came in, and I kept my cool and did the thing. Now I would like to fight Etinosa. I think it is time I teach her a lesson,” Phyna said after the bout. Etinosa, who watched the fight from ringside, accepted the challenge, saying, “I have been advising you to carry the Edo name with pride. We do not run from any fight. I accept the challenge fully.” Phyna’s victory came on the same night skit maker Carter Efe defeated musician Speed Darlington by technical knockout in their four-round celebrity bout. The event also featured professional boxing, with Ghana’s Seth “Freezy Macbones” Gyimah defeating Nigerian champion Godday “Zodsolo” Appah by unanimous decision to win the WBO African Light Heavyweight Continental Championship.

Nollywood actress Liz Anjorin has responded to an interim order issued by the Lagos State High Court barring her from publishing or sharing photographs of Priscilla Ojo’s one-year-old son, Rakeem Mkambala. The actress, during an Instagram Live session on Friday, mocked Priscilla’s mother, veteran actress Iyabo Ojo, over her decision to publicise the court order on social media. Anjorin questioned the authenticity of the document, arguing that a court order should not be publicised before it is formally served on the respondent. In a video from the live session, she said, “Your case na dead on arrival. If you post court letter on any platform before serving person wey you wan go serve, that court case na fake court case.” She also reacted to claims surrounding Priscilla’s legal action, saying, “I don’t want to hear that, Lizzy Anjorin locked Priscilla in prison oh.” The actress further criticised the publication of legal documents on social media, saying, “They have petitioned us oh. Gistlover don run go petition Lizzy oh. They are no longer going to court, oh. The platforms listed in the order include Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp and TikTok. The court also directed Anjorin to stop publishing, broadcasting or posting editorials concerning the applicants on the listed social media platforms pending the hearing and determination of the Motion on Notice. Anjorin has made several social media posts involving the family as part of her long-running feud with Ojo. The latest court order has now added a legal dimension to the dispute, specifically restricting the publication and circulation of photographs of Priscilla’s son and editorials concerning the applicants pending the determination of the substantive application. Actress Mo Bimpe speaks out on infertility stigma, urges people to choose kindness

Actress Mo Bimpe speaks out on infertility stigma, urges people to choose kindness

Nollywood actress Adebimpe Oyebade, widely known as Mo Bimpe, has urged people to show more compassion, empathy and acceptance towards others. The actress made the call in an Instagram post shared on Tuesday while reflecting on the importance of allowing people to tell their own stories without others interpreting their experiences for them. “Everyone is entitled to tell their story. When I shared mine, I didn’t do it so anyone can explain my experience for me. I lived it,” she wrote. Mo Bimpe, who is married to fellow actor Lateef Adedimeji, said she had learned that kindness should not be assumed on behalf of another person, adding that her direct messages were filled with women sharing their experiences. “One thing I’ve learned is that kindness should never be assumed on behalf of someone else. It hurts to hear what women are going through; my DMs are full,” she said. She urged people to be more intentional about including others in social activities while allowing them to decide what they are comfortable with. “Please let’s do better. Invite people. Call them. Include them. Then allow them decide what they can and cannot handle,” she added. The actress further encouraged people to choose compassion, saying that although people may not always know what others are carrying, they can choose to treat them with kindness. Her post comes days after she opened up about feeling excluded from some social gatherings during the period she did not have children.

Don’t Call Me By My First Name, Mo Abudu Tells Young People

Don’t Call Me By My First Name, Mo Abudu Tells Young People

Media mogul and EbonyLife CEO, Mo Abudu, has explained why she expects younger people to address her formally, saying her views on respect were shaped by her traditional upbringing. Abudu stated this during a conversation with Toke Makinwa on Toke Moments, which was shared on IG on Saturday where she described herself as “very traditional” and said she was raised by her grandmother in Ondo. The media executive said she would not accept being addressed casually by her first name, particularly by younger people. “I am very traditional. I was brought up in Ondo by my grandmother. You can’t be calling me by my first name anyhow. I won’t take it!” she said. Abudu also spoke about perceptions of women in business, arguing that qualities that may be used negatively to describe successful women would often be framed differently when referring to men. “If I was a man, they wouldn’t say I was a shark. They’re going to say she’s an astute businesswoman,” she said. On relationships, the 61-year-old media executive said “nobody can break my heart,” insisting that heartbreak is no longer something she worries about at her age. She added that she would rather date someone her age or older, stressing that for her to respect a partner, “you must have achieved something.” Her comments come amid a recent debate over workplace etiquette and how younger employees should address senior executives. At the graduation ceremony of UBA’s Graduate Management Accelerated Programme, a trainee was recently stopped mid-greeting by the bank’s Group Chairman, Tony Elumelu, after addressing him simply as “Tony”. In a video from the event, the trainee was heard saying, “Good morning, Tony,” while addressing the businessman. Elumelu, however, expressed displeasure and corrected the graduate trainee, asking her to address him as “Mr Elumelu” or “TOE”.

Dolly Parton, Country Music Legend, Dies at 80

Country music icon, Dolly Parton, has died at the age of 80, according to multiple reports, including The Independent, The Guardian and Sky News. Parton’s death was reportedly announced by her nephew, Bryan Seaver, on Instagram on Tuesday. “I have imagined the heaviness of this moment but haven’t truly felt it until now. “It is an honour, an honour that is mixed with absolute pride and great sadness,” Seaver said. Parton, who rose from humble beginnings in Tennessee to become one of country music’s most celebrated singer-songwriters, had a career spanning more than six decades. She sold more than 100 million records globally and became known as the “Queen of Country”, with hits including “Jolene”, “9 to 5” and “I Will Always Love You”. Parton wrote more than 3,000 songs and won 11 Grammy Awards. She was also a successful actor, appearing in films including 9 to 5, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Steel Magnolias and Joyful Noise. Born on January 19, 1946, in a two-room log cabin on the banks of the Little Pigeon River in Tennessee, Parton was the fourth of 12 children. Her father was an illiterate sharecropper who later worked his way up to owning a small tobacco farm. Parton described her family as “dirt poor” but credited her mother with passing on her love and knowledge of traditional folk ballads and her father for his work ethic. Parton began performing as a child. By the age of 13, she had appeared on local radio and television in East Tennessee, performed at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville and recorded her first single, “Puppy Love”. After graduating from high school in 1964, she moved to Nashville the following day and began establishing herself as a songwriter. She released her debut album, Hello, I’m Dolly, in 1967, the same year she joined the weekly television programme The Porter Wagoner Show. Wagoner, an established country star, mentored Parton, and the pair released a series of successful albums as a duo. In 1973, Parton decided to concentrate on her solo career and wrote “I Will Always Love You” about their professional separation. The song became a hit for Parton and was later famously recorded by Whitney Houston for the 1992 film The Bodyguard. Parton also wrote “Jolene”, one of her signature songs, around the same period. Both songs were included on her 1974 album Jolene, which helped introduce her to a wider audience beyond country music. Her 1977 album, Here You Come Again, became her first to sell a million copies and earned her first Grammy Award after almost a decade of nominations. In 1980, Parton made her acting debut alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin in the workplace comedy 9 to 5. She also wrote and performed the film’s theme song, which became a number one hit and earned an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song. The film’s success helped launch Parton’s acting career, with roles in films including The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982), Steel Magnolias (1989) and Joyful Noise (2012). Parton also built a business empire that included television specials, food products and Dollywood, the Tennessee theme park she acquired an interest in and renamed in 1986. Beyond music and acting, she was known for her philanthropy, particularly through the Dollywood Foundation’s Imagination Library, which promotes childhood literacy. She also supported medical research, disaster relief and other charitable causes, including donating $1 million towards COVID-19 vaccine research. In 2022, she was awarded the Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy. “I just give from my heart. I never know what I’m going to do or why I’m gonna do it. I just see a need and if I can fill it, then I will,” she said at the time. Parton’s health concerns became public in September 2025 when she postponed her Las Vegas residency. In recent weeks, she had also withdrawn from public appearances amid ongoing health issues. Parton’s death comes months after the death of her husband of nearly 60 years, Carl Dean, who died in March 2025 at the age of 82. The couple married in 1966.

In his short remark during the Muslim prayers held for the late actor, Abiodun, represented by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mr Wasiu Isiaka, described the deceased as an exceptional theatre practitioner and icon whose demise was painful to all. The governor said, “We are here this morning to join the family, friends, and indeed the whole of Nigeria to mourn the demise of Mr Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo—a true icon, a proud Yoruba man, somebody that you are always proud to associate with and say this indeed is my brother. “Today, we are mourning him, and I believe that we are all learning from him. Because the last time I saw Mr Ogogo was when he came to my office to come and see his daughter, this means that Ogogo, apart from being an icon in town, is also a father to his children. “So today, I want to implore everybody, especially the children, to believe in God, that nothing can happen without the knowledge of Allah. It has happened, though sadly and full of sorrow, but what else can we do? We cannot query God. Because of that, take solace in the fact that he lived a very good life.” The governor expressed his appreciation to the people, especially members of the entertainment industry, for standing by the deceased’s family at such a trying time, urging everyone to take solace in the fact that the late actor lived an impactful life and contributed meaningfully to national development. Also speaking with journalists, TAMPAN National President, Amusan, described Ogogo as a complete gentleman of reputable character whose passage had brought much sorrow to the entertainment industry. He said, “Ogogo was a complete gentleman, a man of reputable character. He’s a man of the people; this was evident when he was sick; people unknown to me were all eager to help, but he is gone now.” Amusan urged the family of the deceased to keep alive the enduring legacy of the late thespian. He said, “My charge is that the family should keep his legacy going. Ogogo is dead, but his legacy should be kept alive.” Speaking during the janazah prayer, the Wakeel Muslim for the South-West, Edo and Delta, Sheikh Iskeel Lawal, urged people to live rightly, as death is inevitable for all mortals. Lawal, who is also the Consultant on Islamic Affairs to the Ogun State Government, also urged theatre practitioners to learn to speak out in time when facing challenges and always remain united in all their endeavours, noting that the storm of life could arise at any time. He hailed Hassan’s contributions to the entertainment industry, describing them as legendary, and prayed that Almighty Allah would grant the deceased eternal rest. Oloketuyi reportedly announced the death in a post on social media, writing, “Taiwo Hassan Ogogo is dead. “He finally lost the battle of life.” Ogogo’s daughter, Kaira Taiwo, was also seen crying during a live session on Instagram on Sunday, where she expressed disbelief over her father’s death. Nigerian actor and filmmaker, Saheed Balogun, also mourned the veteran actor in an Instagram post. “Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un. You can rest now my brother Taiwo Hassan Ogogo. May Almighty Allah guide you through Aljannah. This is truly painful,” Balogun wrote. The actor’s death came days after his daughters, Kaira and Lima Taiwo, appealed for medical assistance for their father, who had been battling stage-four cancer. On Monday, August 17, 2026, the sisters took to social media to seek medical advice and assistance for the actor. According to Kaira, doctors had informed the family that they could no longer administer chemotherapy due to his condition. The family subsequently sought alternative treatment options, including specialised medical procedures and traditional remedies. Ogogo was a prominent figure in the Nigerian film industry, particularly known for his contributions to Yoruba-language films.
