Funke Akindele Draws Backlash Over Birthday Post on Ogogo’s Burial Day

Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Funke Akindele, has sparked mixed reactions on social media after sharing a birthday message on Monday, the same day veteran actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, was buried in Ilaro, Ogun State. Akindele, who marked her birthday on Monday, expressed gratitude to God for another year and prayed for good health, long life and the grace to continue fulfilling her purpose. “Today is my birthday. My heart is full of gratitude to God for all He has done, all He is doing, and all that is still to come,” she wrote in an Instagram post. She also prayed that her life would have a positive impact on others. “May my life remain a testimony, and may the way I live inspire others to believe, to dream and to keep going. Thank You, Lord. Happy birthday to me,” she added. Ogogo File: Veteran Nollywood actor, Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo. Her post, however, attracted criticism from some social media users, who questioned the timing of the birthday message amid the burial of Ogogo, who died on Sunday at the age of 66. One X user, Adewale (@SoEdunOkanESita), criticised Akindele for celebrating her birthday on the day of Ogogo’s burial. “Funke Akindele!!! Today of all days! Are you aware that Taiwo Hassan, your senior colleague in the film industry, is dead and will be buried today? Don’t you read the room? Everyone will die o. It is Ogogo today, no one knows who is next tomorrow. What you guys in the Nollywood are doing is not humane. You show no sense of humanity. Well, Ogogo did not die a sudden death even though how it happened is sad. He would have been 67 years old in October. Everyone will reap all they sow,” he wrote. Another X user, Olayinka Mujeeb Adeniyi (@ola_kish), described the birthday post as inappropriate. “Aunty Funke.. shame on you! We are mourning the death of Ogogo…. And you Dey post about birthday. Omooo this is not fair oo,” he wrote. Victoria A (@iamzioraa) also criticised the actress, saying she should have been more sensitive to the mourning surrounding Ogogo’s death. “Aunty Funke should at least read the room, Nigerians are mourning the death of Ogogo…. And she is posting about birthday. Omooo this is not fair oo,” Victoria wrote. Similarly, omoiyanofi (@papiexploring) said while Akindele had the right to celebrate her birthday, the timing of the post appeared insensitive. “Mrs Funke Akindele, I understand that life goes on and everyone has the right to celebrate their birthday, but posting a birthday celebration so soon after the passing of Taiwo Hassan (Ogogo) feels insensitive. Sometimes, it’s not about whether you’re right or wrong to celebrate. It’s about knowing when to tone things down out of respect for someone who has just passed away,” the user wrote. Another X user, AMICABLU (@Gbalode_), said Akindele’s decision to celebrate her birthday on the same day as Ogogo’s burial did not sit well with them. “Funke Akindele celebrating her birthday the same day people are mourning her colleague late Taiwo Hassan ‘Ogogo’ is being held doesn’t sit well with me. For someone of her stature and influence in the Nigerian entertainment industry, I expected a little more sympathy and sensitivity. At times like this, some situations call for restraint and respect,” the user wrote. ÀDÌGÚN the Bald Agbẹjọ́rò (@adigunagbejoro) also described the birthday post as insensitive. “Hmm To be honest, this birthday post seems insensitive. Today is the day Ogogo is being laid to rest, and it is not like he passed away long ago, he had just died yesterday. Humanity should come first. The movie industry is mourning. If Funke Akindele did not post about her birthday, people would understand why. But posting about her birthday on the day he is being laid to rest? I don’t think it demonstrates emotional intelligence,” the user wrote. KAN’EL (@i_am_Abiodun_) said Akindele could have postponed her birthday celebration. “If I were you Aunty Funke, I woulda forgo the celebration of my birth for the year. Today should be all about the passing of Ogogo. But we are not the same person. Happy birthday to you and I wish you long life in good health. I wish for you to continue to prosper,” the user wrote. Similarly, OLA OF IBADAN (@h0llaOla) said Akindele could have postponed the celebration. “Funke Akindele is celebrating her birthday the same day people are mourning her colleague late Taiwo Hassan (Ogogo) who d!ed yesterday. Aunty Funke could have shifted it till tomorrow out of respect but we all know what we are doing,” the user wrote. However, other social media users defended Akindele, arguing that her birthday celebration should not be linked to Ogogo’s death. Joy Ikpefua (@joy_ciana) said it was unfair to criticise the actress for celebrating her birthday because another person had died. “Anyone mocking Funke Akindele for celebrating her birthday today because Ogogo died yesterday is being very silly and, frankly, insensitive. Please, ask them if they have eaten today. Ask them if they went to work today. Have they paused their own lives today to mourn someone who died? Most people have continued with their lives because, as painful as death is, life does not simply stop because someone has died,” she wrote. She added, “Someone dying yesterday does not mean everyone who has a birthday today should cancel their own life, especially when they had no personal relationship with the deceased. You can mourn someone’s death and still acknowledge that another person’s life deserves to be celebrated. Grief is personal. Birthday celebrations are personal too. We need to stop policing how other people respond to death.” Another X user, Divya (@KunnujiC), questioned why Akindele should be expected to suspend her birthday celebration because of Ogogo’s death. “If someone dies at the office, they immediately appoint someone to fill into the position. They won’t do it tomorrow or next, they won’t stop work because someone died, they won’t tell … Read more

Doctor Explains Palliative Care After Ogogo’s Daughters Alleged Hospitals Denied Treatment

Doctor Olusina Ajidahun has addressed claims by the daughters of veteran Yoruba actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, that hospitals have stopped treating their father, who is reportedly battling stage-four cancer. The doctor, identified on X as The Bearded Dr Sina, said the daughters’ description of their father’s treatment could be misunderstood, particularly their claim that hospitals had refused to treat him. Reacting to the development on Monday, he explained that patients with stage-four cancer may be moved to palliative care after chemotherapy and other available therapies have been explored. He wrote, “They don’t want to treat my father again. This is a dangerous statement and can set the tide against the medical team treating her Dad. “When patients have stage 4 cancer and chemo and/or other therapies have been explored. There is a form of care called PALLIATIVE CARE.. which is end-of-life care and care for terminal diseases because at the point of the disease you cannot treat it, but you can manage associated symptoms and give the person a good quality of life before death.” According to him, describing the situation as hospitals refusing to treat the actor could create a negative perception of healthcare workers and potentially trigger hostility against medical professionals. “Saying they don’t want to treat my father makes it look like they are intentionally rejecting him, and in the context of recent happenings in the health sector, it can trigger an insurrection and put a bad label on health care workers,” he said. He also expressed sympathy for Ogogo’s family and said he hoped they would work closely with the medical team treating the actor. “I do hope Ogogo’s daughter and family see this. Wishing the family all the best throughout the trying times,” he added. The doctor clarified that he was not involved in Ogogo’s medical care and was commenting independently on the daughters’ videos. Ogogo’s daughters, Lima and Kira Taiwo, separately appealed for help on Instagram over their father’s health condition. In a video posted on her Instagram page on Monday, Lima said the actor’s condition had deteriorated and claimed that hospitals had refused to treat him. “Hello everybody, good evening. I’m here to ask for help from my daddy. He has cancer and it’s really, really bad. “And the hospitals are refusing to treat him. At least, please, give this man a chance. Nobody wants to do anything,” she said. Lima said the family only discovered the extent of the actor’s condition about three weeks earlier, adding that his outward appearance had not reflected the severity of his illness. “You see him, you can’t even know that. Something is wrong that bad. It’s just starting to show. We didn’t even know until like three weeks ago,” she said. She reiterated that the family was seeking medical assistance and not financial donations, appealing to anyone with connections to healthcare providers who could take on her father’s case. “Please, I’m begging you. If you know somebody that knows somebody that will be willing to treat him, anything, we’re willing to try anything. We’re not here to ask for money. Nobody’s here to ask for money,” she said. Lima also acknowledged the support the family had received from a relative during the crisis. “My big uncle has helped a lot. He has been of great help. Like, nobody even knew that he would show up for us this way,” she said. The actress’ daughter ended her video with an emotional appeal, saying she could not bear to watch her father die. “But if he’s willing to do anything, please, if you know somebody that knows somebody that will be willing to treat him, would you really appreciate it? Please, I can’t watch my daddy die. I can’t. I can’t. Please. Please, I’m begging you. Please. Please,” she said. In a separate Instagram video, Kira also appealed for help, disclosing that her father’s cancer was at stage four. “Hello everyone, I’m here for my daddy. He has cancer and is in stage 4. The hospital is saying that they cannot treat him again, like they can’t give him chemo again,” she said. Kira appealed to anyone who could provide cancer treatment for the actor, including chemotherapy, to contact the family. She stressed that the family was not seeking money but medical intervention that could give their father another chance. “What I’m here for, what I’m here for is that if you can treat my daddy, if you can start chemo for him, whether it’s medical or herbs, please, I’m begging you, guys, I’m begging you, any help, anything, anybody that you know that can treat cancer, please, please, I’m begging you,” she said. She urged anyone who knew a medical professional or facility capable of treating cancer to contact her, her sister or the actor directly. “Please, please, if you can treat my daddy, please send me a DM. I’ll be checking my phone. Please, I don’t want my daddy to die,” Kira said. She became emotional while speaking about her father’s condition, saying she had never seen him in such pain. “God, give me strength. I’m suffering so bad. There’s no money, but if you know anybody that can treat my daddy, Andrew, please,” she said. Kira added that her father had expressed his fear of dying. “He’s saying that he doesn’t want to die. Please, I’ve never seen my daddy in that kind of pain before,” she said. Hassan, 66, is a veteran of the Nigerian film industry whose career spans more than four decades. He has featured in more than 300 films and is one of the most recognisable faces in Yoruba cinema.

Davido: I Have No 2027 Candidate Yet, I Won’t Support APC

Afrobeats singer, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has said he has not chosen a preferred candidate for the 2027 presidential election, while ruling out support for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Speaking during an interview on News Central TV on Tuesday, the music icon addressed whether he would maintain his active political involvement during the upcoming 2027 presidential contest. Responding to questions about political endorsements and addressing his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke’s declaration of support for President Bola Tinubu, Davido clarified that his personal political convictions remain independent. “My uncle, immediately he won, came out to declare his support for Tinubu, but for me, I’m not propelled to support anybody. I personally haven’t seen anybody,” he stated. Recalling his past political engagements, the artiste noted that while he had previously supported opposition figures and cross-party alignments, his current stance remains uncommitted. “In the past, yes, I’ve supported Atiku before when we were in PDP, and I supported in 2015 when APC first did the merger; my late uncle Isiaka Adeleke (Serubawon) was part of the APC, I campaigned then,” he said. He, however, emphasised that his political position ahead of 2027 remains completely open, except for the ruling party. “Right now I don’t have a presidential candidate. It might change, but it’s not going to be APC. Everybody should have their choice,” Davido added. Davido’s comments come amid heightened public attention following his prominent role during the Osun State election cycle, where he mobilised voters and advocated for transparent election results. Davido’s uncle, the re-elected Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has noted that his decision to support Tinubu for a second term in 2027 is based on his belief that the President, as a Yoruba man from the South-West, deserves support to consolidate his reforms and infrastructure projects in the region.

#OsunDecides2026: “Shame on APC, We’re Winning Osun, No Be Edo” — Davido

Afrobeats singer David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has claimed that his uncle, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, is ahead in Saturday’s governorship election. In a series of posts shared on social media as votes were being counted across the state, Davido also claimed that the All Progressives Congress had lost in the ward of former Osun State Governor, Bisi Akande. “Their group chat don scatter! Baba Akande lost his ward. Gov Adeleke is cruising to victory. Shame APC. Osun no be Edo!” he wrote. The singer, who has openly mobilised support for Adeleke, also urged residents to remain vigilant and resist what he described as alleged plans by former Osun State Governor, Gboyega Oyetola. “I implore Osun people to stay vigilant all night and resist plans of Oyetola. Na we get Osogbo! Imole ti woleeeee,” he added. In another post, Davido expressed confidence that Adeleke would win the election and called for security agencies to remain deployed at electoral locations. “We are winning, guys! Security agencies shouldn’t be withdrawn from electoral units,” he wrote. Meanwhile, officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission commenced the sorting and counting of votes at polling units across Osun State following the conclusion of voting. As of 5:51 p.m. on Saturday, a check of the INEC Result Viewing Portal by our correspondent showed that results from 1695 of the 3,763 polling units had been uploaded. PUNCH Online earlier reported that three major candidates in the election had expressed confidence in emerging victorious as the exercise entered the sorting and collation stage. Adeleke, the Accord Party candidate, expressed confidence in victory after casting his vote at Sagba Abogunde Ward 2, Unit 9, in Ede North Local Government Area. Similarly, the All Progressives Congress candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, who voted at Ward 09, Unit 011, Ikire, in Irewole Local Government Area, also expressed confidence of winning the election. Meanwhile, the African Democratic Congress governorship candidate, Najeem Salaam, raised concerns over the alleged non-recognition of his party agents in several areas across the state. The Independent National Electoral Commission has yet to officially declare a winner as of the time of filing this report

Veteran Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Omotola Jolade-Ekeinde, has shared a video capturing her daughter Meriah’s engagement, sparking reactions across social media. In a post on her Instagram page #realomosexy on Saturday, Omotola wrote, “Have you heard? My twinnie is engaged! I guess we have a wedding to plan! Congratulations to the lovebirds”, while sharing the video of the occasion. The 26-year-old apparel product developer, also known as Meraiah or Mimi, had announced her engagement, which she captioned “New chapter” two days earlier. Osun Gov Poll: Davido Alleges Soldiers are Trying to Block His Entry Into Osun

Afrobeats singer David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has alleged that soldiers were attempting to stop him from gaining entry into Osun State on Saturday, as residents vote in the state’s governorship election. In a post on his verified X account early on Saturday, Davido wrote, “I’ve been reliably informed that soldiers are trying to prevent me from entering Osun tomorrow, this won’t happen, every citizen of Nigeria has the right to movement at any point of time.” The statement comes hours after the Nigeria Police Force announced a restriction of movement across Osun State from 12:00 midnight on Friday, August 14, until 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 15, 2026. The measure forms part of security arrangements for the poll, which include the deployment of thousands of police personnel and other security agents. Davido, a nephew of incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke, has been actively involved in his uncle’s re-election campaign under the Accord Party. The governor is seeking a second term against candidates, including Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress and others in the off-cycle election. The singer’s post quickly gained significant traction online, drawing mixed reactions. Some users pointed to the standard election-day movement restrictions as the likely basis for any security checks, while others expressed concern over possible targeted restrictions on the high-profile supporter of the incumbent. Reacting, former presidential media aide, Bashir Ahmad, described Davido’s claim as “dramatic,” noting that security agencies had already announced restrictions on movement across the state as part of measures to ensure a peaceful election. “You are just dramatic, @davido. It has been widely announced by the security operators that movement in and around Osun will be restricted from 12 midnight today until 6 pm today due to the election and this is a standard security measure during elections anywhere not peculiar to Osun. “So the right to freedom of movement does not mean ignoring lawful security measures put in place to ensure a peaceful and credible election,” Ahmad wrote.

‘I’m a Yankee broke girl’ — Nkechi Blessing blasts fake lifestyles on social media

Nollywood actress Nkechi Blessing has criticised people who pursue social media status by portraying themselves as “Lagos big girls,” describing such lifestyles as a facade fuelled by appearances and online trends. In a post shared on her Snapchat story on Friday, the actress distanced herself from social media validation, declaring that she prefers to quietly enjoy her resources rather than live a fake life to impress the public. Blessing mocked those clamouring to associate with high-society personas in Lagos, noting that many who present a wealthy image online are secretly battling financial distress behind closed doors. “Na una want be friends with self-acclaimed Lagos big girls by force; people wey be say na online aesthetic want wound them. The moment you go close, you go too pity them,” she wrote in Pidgin English. Rejecting the societal pressure to maintain a lavish public persona, the actress humorously described herself as a “Yankee broke girl” who prioritises personal space and freedom over public perception. “Me, I be Yankee broke girl, I no kuku identify with anything big girl. Make I sha dey see food chop and ticket money to fly round the world… who get pass me no concern me,” Blessing stated. Despite downplaying her status, Blessing boasted of her underlying financial strength, asserting that true wealth does not depend on posting material possessions on social media platforms. “The pressure to belong to the so-called Lagos big girls can never be for someone like me that likes my space, but when matter of N100m to N200m sup, we go chest am without flinching… ‘Cus we no dey post lifestyle; dem go call us broke,” she added. Blessing’s outburst comes amid heightening online scrutiny and public feuds over social media perception within the Nigerian entertainment space. The high-society “big girl” culture recently took centre stage following a public fallout between The Real Housewives of Lagos co-stars Adeola “Diiadem” Adeyemi and Dabota Lawson. The former close friends exchanged heated claims on social media over fake financial gestures, including a returned ₦5m birthday alert, alleged blog leaks, business funding disputes, and the pressure of public perception. This is not the first time the actress has tackled public perception and online judgment. On Monday that she slammed critics shaming women over marital status and childlessness, warning social media users against judging individuals whose personal struggles and quiet battles remain hidden from the public eye.

Some Nollywood Stars Declined Support for Temitope Osoba’s Burial – Actress

Nollywood actress Toyosi Adesanya has alleged that some of her colleagues refused to support the burial of late actress Temitope Osoba, citing her non-membership of the Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN) as their reason. Adesanya made the allegation on Tuesday at the candlelight procession and artistes’ night held in honour of Osoba in Ikeja, Lagos State. The actress, who is the National Director of Social and Welfare of TAMPAN, represented the association’s President, Bolaji Amusan, popularly known as Mr Latin, at the event. She appealed to practitioners in the entertainment industry to support one another in life and death, while condemning what she described as deception and “eye service” among colleagues. According to her, efforts to raise funds for Osoba’s burial after her death were resisted by some practitioners who questioned her membership of TAMPAN. “Do you know that when Tope died, I was talking to the president about soliciting some funds for her burial but some of our colleagues declined, saying that she wasn’t a member of TAMPAN and that she didn’t practise. “Someone who is dead and I can confirm was a member in Eti-Osa chapter, yet you are still beefing her. You people are going about saying that they shouldn’t contribute a dime for her because she’s not a member. That is bad. The same thing happened when Murphy Afolabi died,” she said. Osoba’s death came barely a year after she publicly shared her experience battling breast cancer and appealed for financial support for her treatment. In August 2025, she announced her return to acting after undergoing surgery and other treatment, saying she had been declared cancer-free. Her death subsequently generated reactions and controversy among colleagues and fans, particularly over the level of support she received from members of the entertainment industry before and after her death. Adesanya urged actors and other practitioners to stop waiting until their colleagues die before celebrating or supporting them, stressing that people should be appreciated while they are still alive. “I have a message for you all, let’s celebrate ourselves while we are alive. Don’t judge anybody, let’s focus on our lives. Temitope came, saw but lost the battle to death,” she said. The actress also criticised what she described as hypocrisy within the industry, noting that the number of people who attended Osoba’s candlelight procession appeared to contrast with the support she said was offered to the late actress when she needed it. Adesanya urged practitioners to replace rivalry and division with love, unity and genuine support, stressing that death should not be the point at which colleagues begin to demonstrate concern for one another.

2Baba, Annie Idibia Follow Each Other Again Amid Reconciliation Speculation

Nigerian music star Innocent Idibia, popularly known as 2Baba, and his estranged wife, Annie Idibia, have reignited reconciliation speculation after the pair followed each other again on Instagram. The former couple, who had previously unfollowed each other on the social media platform, are now following each other again. The development has generated speculation among fans, with some interpreting the renewed Instagram connection as a possible sign that the estranged couple may be rebuilding their relationship. Annie has also reverted to the Instagram name she recently changed from Annie Idibia to Annie Macaulay, further fuelling fans’ curiosity. However, neither 2Baba nor Annie has publicly confirmed that they are reconciling or taking steps to revive their marriage. The renewed social media connection comes more than a year after 2Baba publicly announced that he and Annie had separated and were filing for divorce. In January 2025, the singer announced on Instagram that he and Annie had been separated for some time and were “currently filing for divorce”. The announcement generated widespread reactions, particularly because of the couple’s long and often turbulent relationship. Although the post was initially deleted amid claims that his account had been hacked, 2Baba later confirmed that he was responsible for the announcement. The couple’s relationship dates back to the early years of 2Baba’s music career. Annie featured in the video for his hit song, African Queen, and the pair eventually got married in 2013. Their wedding was held in two ceremonies, with the traditional wedding taking place in Akwa Ibom State and the white wedding held in Dubai. The marriage, however, was repeatedly hit by public controversies, particularly over 2Baba’s relationships with other women and his children from previous relationships. In 2021, the couple’s marital crisis became a major subject of public discussion after Annie accused 2Baba of travelling to the United States to spend time with Pero Adeniyi, the mother of some of his children. The controversy triggered a series of public accusations involving members of both families. Despite the repeated challenges, the couple continued their relationship and renewed their vows in 2023 to mark their 10th wedding anniversary. However, their marriage eventually suffered another major setback, leading to 2Baba’s separation announcement in January 2025. The singer later moved on and married Edo State lawmaker, Natasha Osawaru. Since the separation, both 2Baba and Annie have occasionally been at the centre of speculation about their relationship. The latest development, however, is the renewed Instagram connection between the estranged couple. While following each other again does not necessarily confirm a reconciliation, the move has nevertheless revived discussions about the possibility of the former couple making peace after years of marital crisis.
