Osun Poll: ‘Adeleke Is Different From Fubara,’ Says Dele Momodu

Former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential aspirant in the 2023 general elections, Dele Momodu, has warned against drawing comparisons between Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke and his Rivers State counterpart, Siminalayi Fubara. Momodu, now a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, stated this via his X handle on Tuesday while reacting to an online publication titled ‘Wike: I’d have been in Osun if Tinubu wanted APC victory at all cost.’ “Osun people would have demystified you mercilessly. Adeleke is not Fubara!! My kobo advice, stop equating yourself to God,” Momodu wrote. According to the publication which Momodu reacted to, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, disclosed that the ruling All Progressives Congress wouldn’t have lost the Osun State governorship election if President Bola Tinubu had “wanted to win the Osun State election at all costs.” “I would have been there, and we would have won it, and there’s nothing the governor can do,” Wike stressed. The PUNCH Online reports that Adeleke, contesting on the platform of the Accord Party, won a re-election into office for a second term, having polled 511,067 votes against the APC’s candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, who had 444,815 votes. In his first tenure in office, Adeleke, then a PDP governorship candidate, defeated former governor and current Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola, in the 2022 governorship election. The publication, as earlier referenced, noted that Wike made the statement on Tuesday while responding to questions on the outcome of the Osun governorship election, as he addressed journalists during an inspection of flood-prone areas in Maitama, Abuja. “Wike, a former governor of Rivers State, has been a prominent member of the G5 group of PDP governors who opposed the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election. Since Tinubu appointed him FCT minister, Wike has maintained his membership of the PDP while publicly supporting the President and some policies of his administration. “His latest comment underscores his claim that the APC could have secured victory in Osun had the President chosen to deploy greater political effort towards the election. “Wike has also remained politically active despite serving in an APC-led federal administration, maintaining that his support for Tinubu does not amount to abandoning the PDP,” the publication read. On August 11, 2026, Momodu revealed his support for Adeleke of the Accord Party in Osun State for a second term, despite being a member of a rival opposition party. Momodu insisted that opposition parties must set aside individual interests and align behind Adeleke ahead of the August 15 governorship election in the state. The former presidential aspirant said he remained a proud member of the ADC, saying that he joined the party on the basis that prominent opposition figures decided to form a broad coalition against what he described as the “APC cankerworm.” “I joined ADC on the basis that prominent members of opposition parties in Nigeria decided to form a broad coalition of forces against the APC cankerworm that has almost destroyed our economy, social cohesion, religious tolerance and democratic institutions and separation of powers. It would be foolhardy not to see that with the manner APC has turned Osun State into a theatre of war, the only sensible strategy is for all opposition parties to align immediately and back the Accord Party candidate, Governor Ademola Adeleke. “I make this declaration without equivocation, or any fear of contradiction,” the statement partly read.

Members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have insisted that the impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, will continue, describing it as the only solution to the political crisis in the state. The lawmakers made this known on Friday while briefing journalists, after the Assembly failed to reconvene on Thursday as scheduled. Taking turns to address the media, the legislators maintained that the impeachment proceedings were constitutional and in line with their legislative responsibilities. They dismissed criticisms of the process, insisting that the Assembly was acting within the provisions of the law to address what they described as a political impasse in Rivers State. The briefing came a day after the Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, failed to resume plenary on Thursday, exactly one week after adjourning its last sitting. The House had, at its sitting last week, initiated impeachment proceedings against Fubara and his deputy over alleged gross misconduct. The allegations included the demolition of the Assembly complex and spending public funds without legislative approval. However, the impeachment move has faced political pushback, with four lawmakers between Monday and Wednesday formally withdrawing from the process and calling for an amicable resolution of the crisis. Despite expectations that the Assembly would reconvene on Thursday, there was no indication that plenary held, fuelling speculation about internal divisions within the House. Fubara Sacks Commissioners, Others

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has sacked all commissioners and public officers serving under his administration. Fubara, in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Wednesday evening by his Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, said the sacking was with immediate effect. The governor said the decision followed the recent Supreme Court judgment. Meanwhile, Fubara thanked members of his cabinet for their services and contributions to the development of the State in the last two years. He made the commendation during a valedictory session he held with his cabinet to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary in Government House, Port Harcourt, on Wednesday. The statement reads, “Rivers State Governor, His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has thanked members of his cabinet for their services and contributions to the development of the State in the last two years. The governor highlighted the significance of Nigeria’s Independence, and called on all Nigerians to work together with Mr President to build a peaceful, secure and prosperous country and a brighter future for all.” Fubara also reiterated his commitment to serve the State with renewed vigour, while thanking all citizens for their support, and wished all Nigerians a happy Independence anniversary. “Furthermore, the Governor has relieved all Commissioners and other public officers affected by the recent Supreme Court judgement of their appointments with immediate effect, ” the statement added. Recall that the immediate past Administrator of the State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rted) had, on assumption of office, suspended all commissioners, Special Advisers and Special Assistants to Fubara, who was suspended by President Bola Tinubu following the declaration of a state of emergency in the state. Ibas also dissolved all boards and suspended heads of parastatals he met on the ground in the state. Until Ibas exited the State on September 18, the fate of Fubara’s Commissioners and other appointees had been hanging in the balance.

Rivers APC Ready to Work With Fubara, Says Okocha

Ahead of Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s reinstatement to office on September 18, the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State has declared its readiness to work with him when he is reinstated. The APC said collaborating with the governor will not stop the main opposition in the state from holding Fubara accountable on issues of governance. The state APC Chairman, Chief Tony Okocha, made the declaration during a news briefing in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, on Tuesday. Okocha assured all that the APC would continue to consolidate on its membership base while also offering constructive criticism of the Fubara administration after his return. He said, “The governor who was suspended will return to office on September 18. The APC will work with him when he returns. “There are states where the governor and assembly members are in different parties, so we are going to work with him. “However, that will not take away our right to criticise him when he does wrong. But for us, the LG chairmen will work with him, except that we will not agree to vicious policies.” Okocha described the just-concluded local government elections in the state as an introduction to the 2027 general elections, noting that the APC deliberately chose not to field candidates in strongholds of the Peoples Democratic Party but concentrated on areas where it had a comparative advantage. “The Rivers State LG election is a prelude to what will happen in 2027. “Whilst we were campaigning, I told our people that there is a need for us to believe in the centre and leave the periphery. “We did not field candidates in Obio/Akpor, Port Harcourt City, and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni LGAs because we do not have the strength in those areas. “It was our own calculated strategy not to field candidates in those LGAs and concentrate only where we have a comparative advantage. Remember that Rivers State was a PDP state,” Okocha explained. He expressed optimism about the party’s growing influence, contrasting its position in the 2023 elections with its current status. “In 2023, APC in Rivers State had no shoes. Now we are wearing psychedelic shoes. “We are going to double and redouble our membership for the President. As far as my party is concerned, we will be fielding him for a second term in 2027,” he said. Okocha took a swipe at the PDP, saying the party was collapsing and its members were defecting in droves to the APC, which he said now calls the shots. He stressed, “PDP is in tatters and people are leaving them in droves for other parties, and we’re privileged to have them. “We’ll continue our pleas for the PDP members, particularly the FCT Minister, to come over to the APC and have peace. The PDP is in tatters.” Recall that Fubara was suspended from office by President Bola Tinubu on March 18, after he declared a state of emergency in Rivers State following rising political tensions in the state. Tinubu had based his action on the attack on oil facilities in the state by militants who were allegedly sympathetic to the governor, accusing Fubara of not doing anything to stop the threats to cause mayhem. The President then appointed former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.) as Administrator of the state for an initial six-month period. Last Saturday, while speaking to newsmen after casting his vote in the just concluded local government elections, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, said that with the poll, the ‘coast’ was now clear for Fubara to be reinstated. Court Cautions Parties, Adjourns Suit Challenging Fubara, Others’ Suspension

A Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has adjourned until May 26, 2025, the constitutional suit challenging the suspension of the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Prof. Ngozi Odu, and all members of the State House of Assembly by President Bola Tinubu. The suit was filed by a former federal lawmaker and People’s Democratic Party Rivers State Governorship aspirant in the 2023 general election, Dr. Farah Dagogo. President Tinubu had, on March 18, 2025, declared a State of Emergency in Rivers State, citing security concerns. He further announced the suspension of the state’s democratically elected leadership and appointed Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rated).as the Administrator of Rivers State. FHC/PH/CS/50/2025 on April 9, 2025, arguing that the President’s actions were ultra vires and lacked any constitutional backing. At the hearing on Monday, counsel to the plaintiff, Cosmas Enweluzo, SAN, informed the court that all defendants had been duly served and expressed readiness to proceed with the case. The defendants in the suit include President Bola Tinubu, Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas and Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retired), Rivers State Administrator. Of all the named defendants, only the fifth defendant, Vice Admiral Ibas (retired), appeared through his counsel, Kehinde Ogunwumiju, SAN, who requested additional time to respond to the originating summons. After hearing from both counsels, Justice Adamu Mohammed granted the request but cautioned that the matter would proceed on the next adjourned date regardless of further delays. Speaking to journalists after the court session, Enweluzo reiterated that President Tinubu acted outside the Constitution. He stated, “The case challenges the President’s unilateral appointment of an Administrator for Rivers State and the suspension of duly elected officials, including the Governor, Deputy Governor, and House of Assembly members. “The President cannot act as a ‘Tin god’. He does not have the constitutional authority to suspend elected representatives or govern over four million citizens by fiat. It is a constitutional aberration and must not be allowed.” Enweluzo questioned the justification provided by the President for declaring a state of emergency, citing serious cars of insecurity in some parts of the North without any of such action taken. “The insecurity narrative is unfounded. In Benue, Plateau, and Borno States, serious security challenges persist, people are being killed, and some local governments remain under Boko Haram control. “Yet no state of emergency was declared there. Rivers State has remained relatively peaceful, ” he explained. The Senior Advocate of Nigeria commended Dr Dagogo for taking legal action in defence of the Constitution. Enweluzo noted, “We are grateful for principled leaders like Dr. Farah Dagogo who are willing to defend the Nigerian Constitution. Citizens have a right to be governed by officials they have elected and represented by legislators of their constituencies in Degema, Bonny, and others.” Explaining the reason for the adjournment, Enweluzo said, “Counsel for the fifth defendant informed the court that their staff were at the Registry filing processes in response to our originating summons. “They requested an adjournment to complete their filings. In fairness, and since it was their first request, we agreed. The court, therefore, adjourned to May 26, 2025. If delays persist beyond that, the court will be entitled to proceed with the case.” He added that while all other defendants have been duly served, none have filed a memorandum of appearance, conditional appearance, or any legal response to the suit. Coalition Urges Wike, Fubara To Sign Peace Pact Within 90 Days

The Coalition for Democracy and Development has called on the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and the suspended Governor, Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara to put aside their differences and sign a new peace pact within the next 90 days. The CDD condemned both Wike and Fubara urging them to prioritise the welfare of the people in the midst of the political crisis. In a statement signed by the Public Secretary, CDD, Dr. George Ifure, he lamented the political crisis in Rivers State, adding that the ongoing crisis is a clear indication of the failure of leadership. To resolve the crisis, the CDD also called on President Tinubu and the National Assembly to establish a committee comprising eminent Nigerians who can mediate and find a lasting solution. The group said, “We call on Wike and Governor Fubara to put aside their differences and work towards signing a new peace pact within the next 90 days. We urge them to prioritize the interests of the people and find a lasting solution to the crisis. “We warn Wike and Fubara that Nigerians are ready to hold them responsible if they fail to sign a peace pact within the stipulated timeframe. The CDD calls on President Bola Tinubu and the National Assembly to name a committee for the resolution of the Rivers State political crisis. “We urge President Bola Tinubu to make history with the way he handles the Rivers State crisis. This is a pivotal moment that requires bold and visionary leadership. We implore him to focus on the welfare and interests of the Nigerian people, to listen to their voices, and to work towards a peaceful and democratic resolution that will restore democratic governance in Rivers State. “We urge the two parties to embrace peace and ensure there is an immediate resolution to the crisis. The CDD believes that a peaceful resolution to the crisis is necessary to restore democratic governance in Rivers State. We urge all stakeholders to work towards finding a peaceful and democratic solution to the crisis in Rivers State.” Punch

Fubara Denied Entry Into Rivers Assembly Quarters

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, was on Wednesday denied access to the official quarters of the state House of Assembly along Aba Road, Port Harcourt, where lawmakers loyal to his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, have been holding their sittings. Fubara, who arrived at the complex in the company of top government officials, including the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, and his Chief of Staff, Edison Ehie, met a locked gate, effectively preventing his entry. Speaking to journalists at the scene, the governor accused Speaker Martin Amaewhule of deliberately avoiding him, stating that several calls placed to the lawmaker went unanswered. He stated, “Before my arrival here, I made several attempts to speak to the Speaker. I also sent a letter which was transmitted for this particular invitation. “Unfortunately, at the gate, you can see that the place is completely sealed, and there is no sign that anything is going to happen today.” The governor insisted that his actions were in the interest of the people, stressing that he remained committed to fulfilling his constitutional duties. “The reason why we are doing this, I have always said, is in the interest of our people, which is the most important thing. Rivers Assembly Gives Fubara 48 Hours To Submit 2025 Budget

The Rivers State House of Assembly has given the state governor, Similaya Fubara 48 hours to present the 2025 budget to the lawmakers. The lawmakers made the request during their sitting in Port Harcourt on Monday. On January 2nd, Governor Fubara signed the ₦1.1 trillion 2025 Budget into law after presenting it to lawmakers led by Victor Oko-Jumbo. However, months later, the Supreme Court ruled that Martin Amaewhule and his group were legitimate members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, ending the leadership crisis that had split the house. In their first sitting after the judgement, the lawmakers asked the governor to present the budget, which he had named the “Budget of Inclusive Growth and Development.” The Supreme Court also ordered the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to withhold allocations to Rivers State for disobeying court orders. It further nullified the local government elections conducted in the state last year. In response, Fubara directed the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission to conduct fresh local government elections. “Furthermore, given the outlawing of caretaker arrangements in the local government system, I hereby direct the Heads of Local Government Administration to immediately take over the administration of the 23 local government councils pending the conduct of fresh elections by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission,” the governor said in a state broadcast on Sunday. He also instructed the “outgoing local government chairmen to formally hand over the levers of power to the Heads of Local Government Administration by Monday, 3rd March 2025.” Punch
