Lagos Arrests Mother Over Alleged Torture of 11-Year-Old Son

The Lagos State Government has rescued an 11-year-old boy who was allegedly tortured by his biological mother. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Lagos State Bureau of Public Defender (BPD) said the child had endured sustained physical abuse involving electric cables and other harmful objects, leaving him with multiple injuries. The agency said it immediately notified the police after receiving the report. Following an investigation by officers at the Nigeria Police Force, Igbogbo Division, Ikorodu, the mother was arrested and charged to court. “The Bureau of Public Defender (BPD) received a case involving an 11-year-old minor (name withheld) who was subjected to severe physical abuse by his biological mother,” the statement read. “The abuse reportedly involved the repeated use of electric cables and other harmful objects, resulting in multiple injuries of varying degrees. “The Bureau reported to the police and following a thorough investigation conducted by the Nigeria Police Force at the Igbogbo Division in Ikorodu, the suspect was arrested and subsequently charged to court. The case was brought before the Magistrate Court in Ikorodu, the BPD confirmed. The bureau added that the child has since been removed from the abusive home and placed in a secure government shelter, in line with its mandate to protect vulnerable children. The suspect has been remanded in custody pending further legal proceedings. “The matter was brought before Magistrate Court in Ikorodu, Lagos. “In line with its mandate to uphold and protect the rights and welfare of children, the Bureau of Public Defender ensured that the victim was promptly removed from the abusive environment and placed in a secure shelter for care and protection. “The alleged perpetrator has been remanded in custody pending further legal proceedings.”

Rains Trigger Flooding, Traffic Gridlock in Lagos

Lagos State Government has reassured residents that the flooding on parts of Lekki on Tuesday is a short-term occurrence and that normal conditions are expected as the waters recede. The development came after heavy rainfall led to temporary tidal lock-ups and flash floods, causing traffic congestion along key roads, including Chisco Elegushi and the Elf area, tailing back to Jakande First Gate. The incident was captured in a video circulating online, where a motorist recorded a visibly flooded road on Lekki, alleging that the flooding occurred after just 30 minutes of rainfall. Commissioner of Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, in a post on X, urged residents to remain calm, stressing that there is no need for panic, as he assured all that government teams are closely monitoring the situation. “While there was rainfall on the Island and a temporary tidal lock-up occurred, this is a short-term situation. “As the tide recedes in the next few minutes, the water will discharge naturally and conditions will improve,” he said. Meanwhile, Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, also took to X to update motorists on the traffic situation. “Due to the heavy rains, there are flash floods at Chisco Elegushi worsening traffic flow. ‎Makinde Drags Wike As PDP Holds Southern Zoning Meeting In Lagos ‎

‎IBADAN – THE Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, on Thursday, sent what appeared to be a subtle dig at the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, declaring that he does not “go low with anyone who decides to go into the gutters.” ‎Makinde made the remark while addressing journalists shortly after the Southern Zoning Consultative Summit of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held on Thursday in Lagos. ‎The meeting, which attracted the Chairman of PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) Senator Adolphus Wabara, chairman of the party’s National Zoning Committee and Bayelsa state governor, Douyo Diri, Governors Ademola Adeleke of Osun state, Peter Mba of Enugu represented by his deputy, Ifeanyi Ossai, former Osun governor, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Chief Bode George, and Senator Monsurat Sunmonu. ‎Others include 12 of the 17 PDP National Assembly members and key stakeholders of the party from across the southern states. The summit was aimed at fostering unity and charting the course for the party ahead of the forthcoming party’s national congress. ‎Responding to questions on threats of division within the party and attacks from aggrieved members, Makinde hinted at the party’s leadership style, indirectly shading Minister Nyesom Wike. ‎“Personally, when people go low or go into the gutters, I don’t go with them. Some people are not going into the gutters. We will reach out to them. That is democracy. ‎“I can disagree with people, but there shouldn’t be anything personal here. It should be about what we are giving to Nigerians because they are watching,” Makinde stated. ‎The Oyo governor added that despite challenges, recent elections had shown that the PDP remained a formidable force. ‎“In all our states, they showed last Saturday that PDP is not dead. In most other places of the 12 states, PDP came second. It is an indication to us that if we continue to work hard, we can reclaim the confidence of Nigerians,” he said. ‎The zoning consultative meeting comes just days before the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the PDP scheduled for Monday, where critical decisions are expected to be taken on the party’s future. ‎Governor Makinde, who also reeled out the calibre of party’s national and zonal leaders, stressed that the summit reflected the seriousness of the party to rebuild with a view to providing a more formidable opposition for the ruling party ahead of the next general election. ‎Fielding questions from journalists over another purported meeting of southern PDP stakeholders, Governor Makinde said: “Governor Ademola Adeleke is here. ‎“He came back into the, country this morning and went straight to address some governance issues before joining us. Governor Douye Diri is also here. Governor Peter Mbah, who could not make it physically, sent his deputy governor. ‎“You have the chairman of the Board of Trustees here. You also have at least 12 of the 17 members of the zoning committee from the South. ‎“In each zone, there are representatives of senators, House of Representatives members, and BOT members. So, this shows wide representation.” ‎The governor, however, admitted that political meetings hardly achieve 100 percent attendance but emphasized that “consultation means you keep reaching out, you keep engaging.” He assured that critical party stakeholders not in attendance at the Lagos meeting would be reached out to. ‎When asked about discussions on zoning of the PDP presidential ticket to the South, Makinde said the party was not yet at that stage. ‎“We haven’t even gotten there. We need to have a party first before you start talking about presidential candidates. If we don’t have a party, anything you are trying to do will fall flat. ‎“Our efforts right now are directed towards having a vibrant and united PDP that Nigerians will be proud of and believe in again,” he said. ‎

Lady Arrested In Lagos For Mixing Spoiled Yam Flour With Harmful Colouring

Officials of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps have arrested a woman for allegedly adulterating yam flour (elubo isu) with harmful colouring agents. The arrest was disclosed on Friday by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, via his official X handle. Wahab said the suspect, identified as Mrs Kehinde Raji, was apprehended following a tip-off from the Chairman of the Elubo Sellers Association, who raised an alarm about dangerous food adulteration practices within the market. According to the commissioner, the suspect was allegedly mixing spoiled yam flour with hazardous colouring chemicals to produce contaminated elubo, which was then sold to unsuspecting consumers. He wrote, “This morning, we received credible intelligence from the Chairman of Elubo Sellers Association regarding dangerous food adulteration practices within the market. The report indicated that some unscrupulous traders were mixing harmful coloring agents with spoiled yam flour to produce contaminated ‘Elubo Isu’ for unsuspecting consumers. “Our KAI enforcement team immediately conducted a raid, leading to the arrest of one Mrs. Kehinde Raji who was caught engaging in this criminal activity. We commend the market leadership for bringing this critical public health issue to our attention. “Preliminary reports confirm that several consumers have already suffered health complications from consuming this adulterated product. The suspect will be prosecuted in accordance with the relevant law of #followlasg.”

Lagos LG poll: Why We Did Not Shut Border – Immigration

Comptroller of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Seme Border Command, Absullahi Adamu, says the service did not receive any directive to close the border over the Lagos State Local government election. Adamu told the News Agency of Nigeria in Seme on Saturday, that the border is an international one, under exclusive list. “Closing of an international border should come from higher authority. “There is no information regarding restriction of movement till 3pm, so our status quo remains,” he said. According to him, the border cannot be closed against people coming into the country but the service can only advise them to wait till 3p.m after stamping them in before leaving the border. Adamu said that foreigners coming into the country through the border would be urged to hang somewhere, after stamping their passports till 3.p.m before leaving the border. Lagos LG Poll: Police Restrict Movement From 3am To 3pm Saturday

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr Olohundare Jimoh, has announced a 12-hour restriction on movement on Saturday across the state for the local government election. He also ordered a massive deployment of personnel across the state. Jimoh disclosed this in a statement signed by the command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, in Lagos on Wednesday. He said the deployment was to ensure a hitch-free exercise. “Consultative Committee on Elections Security in Lagos State and other critical stakeholders in the election, putting into cognisance foremost public interest to enable adequate security, peaceful conduct and safety before, during and after the election, and also to effectively implement the robust security arrangements to protect and safeguard the election, the electorates, LASEIC officials and adhoc staff and electoral processes and other members of public not participating in the election, hereby wishes to announce and inform the general public in Lagos State of total restriction of vehicular movement throughout Lagos State from 3 am on Saturday 12th July, 2025 till 3 pm of same Saturday 12th July, 2025,” the statement read. He added that elaborate security arrangements and comprehensive security measures have been put in place to ensure security, safety, and peaceful and orderly conduct of the LG elections. “The command with other security and safety agencies is working together under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security. “The restriction of vehicular movements will apply to all roads and waterways within the state jurisdiction,” he said. He added that police escorts and armed security aides were strictly prohibited from accompanying their principals to polling units or collation centres. The measure was to prevent any undue influence or intimidation during the election. “Police escorts, covered number plates, and the use of sirens at or in the vicinity of polling units and collation centres are prohibited,” he said. Jimoh said that only vehicles designated for essential services, such as ambulances, fire trucks, and patrol vehicles operated by security agencies in the ICCES, would be permitted to operate during the restriction period. The commissioner added, “All other vehicles, including those belonging to any quasi-security outfit and state security agencies, are barred from movement, as no state-owned security agency is authorised to participate in the election security operations, in line with the electoral act. “The movement restriction will not apply to essential services such as those on medical emergencies and other emergency responders and their workers, the duly accredited officials of the LASIEC and accredited election observers and media practitioners on election coverage accredited by LASIEC. “These categories of groups and individuals are permitted to carry out their lawful duties during the election period, provided they adhere to all the relevant guidelines and regulations in the Electoral Act.” He said that all the security agencies personnel and other stakeholders, including the media and election observers accredited by LASEIC for the election, would have and wear their identification tags certified by LASEIC throughout the period of the election. “No one without the identification tag will be allowed to take part in the election. Anyone arrested without an identification tag will be investigated and prosecuted in line with the Electoral Act,” he said. NAN

The APC in Lagos State on Tuesday officially presented party flags to its 57 chairmanship and 376 councillorship candidates for the 12 July Local Government Elections. The party also launched its campaign for the council at the event held at the APC State Secretariat, Ogba. Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by Mrs Abimbola Salu Hundeyin, the Secretary to the State Government, assured the candidates of the government’s support to help them emerge victorious in the election. “The love I have for this party is unquantifiable. I am with all the candidates; this is not just an official flag-off, it symbolises the beginning of hard work and dedication. “We are solidly behind every aspirant, we are in this together, and all will be successful by God’s grace. “As we raise these flags today, we are proud and happy. Let us remember our values and principles; we are known for being a progressive movement. “We are not only here to win an election, we are here to change the lives of our people and continue the legacy of our President. “We must deliver all our promises to the people. Do all you can as party faithful to ensure victory for this party,” Sanwo-Olu said. Tension In Ogun, Lagos Over Alleged ‘Deadly Rice’ In Circulation

There is tension in parts of Ogun and Lagos states over rumours that there is deadly rice in circulation. Parents and relatives send voice messages to their loved ones, warning them against buying or consuming rice at this time because a foreign trader had invoked the spirit of Ogun deity after her two trucks of rice were stolen and smuggled into Nigeria. In various voice notes forwarded to our correspondent, the speakers maintained that two trucks of rice were stolen from a neighbouring country and were later smuggled into Nigeria through the Idiroko border and the Seme border. It was stated that the owner of the bags of rice, a woman, contacted some Ogun worshipers in Ghana to lay curses on whoever buys or consumes the alleged stolen rice. In a voice note, it was rumoured that some Customs officers and a soldier had died in Badagry, Lagos State. It was also alleged by another sender on WhatsApp that over 70 persons had died in the past few days after buying or consuming the said rice. Imported rice from the Benin Republic remains one of the most consumed staples in Nigeria, especially by children and the youth. As the warnings keep getting to people in Ogun and Lagos, they pass the same to their loved ones, emphasising to them that rice must not be consumed or bought at this time. A resident in the Ipokia Local Government of Ogun State, Morayo, told our correspondent on Wednesday that some parents went to schools, telling the food vendors not to sell rice to their children. As some individuals tried to debunk the rumour, more voice notes came from different people, claiming their alleged confirmation of the deaths. This has left many confused as to whether to buy rice or not. However, the Nigerian Customs Service in Lagos and Ogun debunked the claims, saying there was no deadly rice in circulation. In a statement by the NCS, Seme Area Command, Public Relations Officer, Isah Sulaiman, said the narrative was entirely false, misleading, and did not reflect the reality of the matter. “The attention of the Nigeria Customs Service, Seme Area command, has been drawn to a widely circulated unfounded and baseless allegation claiming that the Command seized and distributed bags of rice without the knowledge of the purported owner, who then allegedly invoked traditional powers leading to the death of individuals, including a soldier at Badagry. “The command wishes to categorically state that this narrative is entirely false, misleading, and does not reflect the reality of the matter,” the statement said. It disclosed that the command had always adhered to NCS Standard Operating Procedures for disposing of seized goods, which is guided by transparency, due process, and strict adherence to extant laws and guidelines. “It is instructive to say that no incident within the Command’s Area of Responsibility or among personnel corroborates the false claims of deaths resulting from rice consumption linked to the NCS. “Unfortunately, some unscrupulous elements wearing the garment of journalism (a credible profession) to disinform members of the public with baseless, fictitious and malicious accusations to score cheap points instead of the social responsibility they are supposed to uphold,” the command added. The NCS urged the general public to disregard this “unfounded story and refrain from spreading false information that could incite fear or tarnish the image of the security agencies working tirelessly to safeguard the nation.” Our correspondent learnt that rumour has spread to Abeokuta, Ibadan, and other states, creating fears among rice consumers.
