JUST IN: EFCC Arrest Energy Commission DG over Alleged N500bn Fraud

  Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have arrested the Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Mustapha Abdullahi, over alleged money laundering offences. A source within the anti-graft agency, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on the matter, disclosed on Wednesday that Abdullahi was arrested in Abuja and is currently in the custody of the commission. According to the source, the alleged fraud involves funds estimated at N500bn. “We have arrested the Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Dr Mustapha Abdullahi, for money laundering offences. He was arrested and is currently in our custody. The money is to the tune of N500bn,” the official said. Efforts to get confirmation from the EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, were unsuccessful as he could not be reached as of the time of filing this report. Lagos Arrests Mother Over Alleged Torture of 11-Year-Old Son

  The Lagos State Government has rescued an 11-year-old boy who was allegedly tortured by his biological mother. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Lagos State Bureau of Public Defender (BPD) said the child had endured sustained physical abuse involving electric cables and other harmful objects, leaving him with multiple injuries. The agency said it immediately notified the police after receiving the report. Following an investigation by officers at the Nigeria Police Force, Igbogbo Division, Ikorodu, the mother was arrested and charged to court. “The Bureau of Public Defender (BPD) received a case involving an 11-year-old minor (name withheld) who was subjected to severe physical abuse by his biological mother,” the statement read. “The abuse reportedly involved the repeated use of electric cables and other harmful objects, resulting in multiple injuries of varying degrees. “The Bureau reported to the police and following a thorough investigation conducted by the Nigeria Police Force at the Igbogbo Division in Ikorodu, the suspect was arrested and subsequently charged to court. The case was brought before the Magistrate Court in Ikorodu, the BPD confirmed. The bureau added that the child has since been removed from the abusive home and placed in a secure government shelter, in line with its mandate to protect vulnerable children. The suspect has been remanded in custody pending further legal proceedings. “The matter was brought before Magistrate Court in Ikorodu, Lagos. “In line with its mandate to uphold and protect the rights and welfare of children, the Bureau of Public Defender ensured that the victim was promptly removed from the abusive environment and placed in a secure shelter for care and protection. “The alleged perpetrator has been remanded in custody pending further legal proceedings.”  

Pretty Mike Gets N50m Bail for Alleged Drug Offence

  A Lagos popular entertainer and nightclub owner, Mike Nwalie, alias Pretty Mike, was granted N50m bail on Thursday following his arraignment before the Federal High Court in Lagos over alleged drug-related offences. Nwalie, who owns Proxy Lagos Night Club, was arraigned alongside the club’s supervisor, Joachim Hillary, 32, by the Federal Government of Nigeria through the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency. The duo appeared before Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa on a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy, unlawful possession, and permitting the use of the club premises for illegal drug activities. The NDLEA’s prosecution counsel, Buhari Abdullahi, told the court that the offences were allegedly committed on or about October 26, 2025.

The attention of the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) has been drawn to false reports circulating on social media, particularly on Facebook, alleging that OYRTMA officials were responsible for the death of a commercial tricycle rider at the University of Ibadan axis on Wednesday, August 27, 2025. We wish to state categorically that the report is untrue, misleading, and aimed at tarnishing the image of the Authority. For the past three months, OYRTMA officials have been stationed at the U.I axis, enforcing compliance with traffic lights to ensure sanity and orderliness on our roads, an effort heavily supported by the financial commitment of the Oyo State Government. On the said date, at about 11:30 am, a commercial tricycle with registration number MNY 805 QU willfully violated the traffic light. The rider was flagged down but attempted to escape dangerously. He was eventually apprehended at the Preboye traffic light. In the course of enforcement, the rider bit one of the officers and, in a desperate move to avoid lawful arrest, feigned collapse, pretending to be dead, ostensibly to incite mob action against OYRTMA personnel. As the officers were being distracted by the crowd, the rider suddenly stood up, entered his tricycle, and sped off before the arrival of policemen from Sango Police Station. Therefore, the allegation that OYRTMA officials killed a tricycle rider is not only false but also mischievous. To put the record straight, we pose the following pertinent questions to those spreading the rumors: Who took the allegedly “dead” tricycle rider to the hospital? Which hospital was he taken to, and which doctor certified him dead? Where was his supposed corpse deposited? Who removed the said tricycle from the scene? Did the police officers who later arrived at the scene find a corpse or a tricycle? Did OYRTMA officials abandon their duty post, or did they continue their lawful duties as evidence that no such death occurred? These questions remain unanswered because the incident was clearly staged by the tricycle rider to evade the consequences of his traffic violation. OYRTMA assures the public that it remains committed to carrying out its statutory duties in line with the law and will not be distracted by baseless allegations. We call on members of the public to always seek the truth and not be misled by unfounded speculations.

  The Great Ife Movement (GIM) has raised the alarm over an alleged illegal attempt by the Ogunsua of Modakeke, Oba Joseph Olubiyi Toriola, to install Baales (village heads) in Toro, Oyere-Famia axis and the Ife Forest Reserve (F3) all located within Ife North Local Government Area, of Osun State. Speaking at a press conference held at the Oba Okunade Sijuade Memorial Hall, Enuwa, Ile-Ife, over the weekend, the President of GIM, Comrade Femi Oyeyinka warned that this move could provoke unrest in Ifeland if not urgently addressed. The GIM President acknowledged the past efforts of the Osun State Government under the able leadership of Asiwaju of Ede, Senator Nurudeen Ademola Jackson Adeleke, the traditional leaders, and peace committees, particularly the Osun State Boundary Adjustment Commission (OSBAC) under Justice Adekunle Adeigbe (Retd.), in maintaining harmony between Ife and Modakeke. The group also praised the role of the Ife/Modakeke Peace Committee, led by elder statesman Pa Sheik Saka Fawole, in preventing conflicts that could have led to bloodshed. However, Oyeyinka stressed that Ife lands, including Toro, Alapata, Oyere, Onibambu, and Oduranyin, traditionally belong to Ife families and fall under the jurisdiction of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II. He noted the reported attempt to install Baales in these areas as an “act of trespass” and an “affront” to the Ooni’s authority. He further alleged that Modakeke leaders have been provoking Ife residents by making territorial claims and leveraging political influence. He called on the Osun State Government, security agencies, and relevant authorities to intervene and prevent any actions that could disrupt the fragile peace in the region. “We appeal to the state government, law enforcement agencies, political leaders, and respected monarchs to swiftly stop this unlawful act before it leads to a crisis,” Oyeyinka stated. Alleged N423bn Scam: Northern Christians Give EFCC 72 Hours To Arrest El-Rufai

  ABUJA – As debate continues to heat up around the allegation of misap­propriation of funds by the for­mer Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai; another group has come out to charge the anti graft agency to do its job by arresting him. In a statement made avail­able to newsmen on Thursday and signed by Barr. Gideon Jato and Bro. Sunday Adoka, Presi­dent and Secretary respectively of Northern Christians Accord (NCA); the group reiterated that, it was long overdue for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to arrest and probe Mallam El-Rufai. The group wondered why it would take the EFCC such a long time without taking action, even when series of petitions have been submitted at the national headquarters, after the Kaduna State House of Assembly indict­ed El-Rufai and some key officials of his government of allegedly embezzling the sum of N423 bil­lion. The Kaduna State Assembly ad-hoc committee probing the financial dealings of the eight years administration of former Governor El-Rufai had in June, 2024, indicted him and some key members of his cabinet for al­leged corruption in the awards of contracts and management of both domestic and foreign loans obtained by his government. In the report submitted to the House by the chairman of the ad-hoc committee, Henry Danjuma, it said that there was evidence of several cases of corruption in the running of the affairs of the Government, Ministries, Depart­ments, and Agencies in Kaduna State from 29th May 2015 to 29th May 2023. After adopting the report, the House recommended, amongst other things, that the Kaduna Internal Revenue Service with­draw the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) Account domi­ciled at Zenith Bank as Security for N20,000,000,000.00 guaranteed in 2023 forthwith and request the bank to refund all monies deduct­ed on account of the purported illegal guarantee together with the accrued interest thereof. The House also recommend­ed that all the Commissioners of Finance and the Accountants General of the State from 29th May, 2015 to 29th May, 2023 be referred to the appropriate Law Enforcement Agencies for thor­ough investigation. Subsequently, a group under the auspices of Kaduna Citizens Watch for Good Governance (KCWGG), in July 2024 took petitions to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) against Mallam E-Rufai and his men, over an alleged N423 billion fraud. Seven months after the indict­ment by the Parliament and the attendant petitions to the anti graft agencies, no action has been taken to arrest or probe the former Governor. “We perceive this as an affront and total disregard to the rule of law and a great insult to the sen­sibility of the people of Kaduna State, especially the institution of the State House of Assembly. “For the EFCC and ICPC to have closed their eyes and shut their ears against the indict­ments, petitions and cries of Ka­duna people, only means they are in support of corruption in Nigeria and as such, shielding El-Rufai. “It is very glaring that the law in Nigeria is centrifugally posi­tioned to favour some people and witch-hunt others. We remember how the EFCC was battling day and night a few months ago, looking for former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, over a petition from a group in the state. “But the same EFCC has bra­zenly become blind, deaf and dumb over the El-Rufai issue, de­spite the indictment by the House of Assembly, and having received a series of petitions from various groups. Whereas, in the case of Kogi State, the Assembly did not indict the former Governor, but EFCC went for him, arrested and arraigned him. But Kadu­na is a special case that cannot be handled, because El-Rufai is untouchable? “The man who was alleged to have stolen N80bn is already standing trial. Why is it taking EFCC and others years to prose­cute a man who was indicted of almost N500bn? “The Northern Christians Accord is giving the EFCC and other agencies responsible for the arrest, prosecution and recovery of the N423bn confirmed by the Assembly to have been allegedly embezzled by El-Rufai, to do the needful and save themselves and the nation of this monumental embarrassment. “Failure to do so, we shall not hesitate to create awareness about the complacency of the agencies, both within Nigeria and to the international commu­nity. We shall also mobilise our members across the 19 northern states, to match the headquarters of EFCC and National Assem­bly”, the group added. Independent NG

EFCC Grants Bail To Yahaya Bello’s Co-Defendants In Alleged N110.4 Billion Fraud Case

  The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (SAN) has granted administrative bail to two men – Umar Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu – charged with former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello for allegedly diverting the state’s funds. The EFCC had filed a 16-count charge against Bello and the two other defendants, alleging criminal breach of trust to the tune of N110.4 billion. At the mention of the case yesterday before a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Maitama, lawyer to the EFCC, Jamiu Agoro, said the order of the court, given on October 3 in issuing public summons against Bello, had not lapsed. Agoro confirmed that the EFCC had granted an administrative bail to Oricha and Hudu, the second and third defendants. He added: “In that wise, we feel it will not be appropriate for us to take proceedings while that 30 days is still running. “So, we have discussed and agreed to come back on November 27, 2024.” The EFCC’s lawyer said the November 20 date, earlier given by the court, was not convenient for the prosecution. He urged the court to grant an application to issue a hearing notice to be served on Bello, the first defendant who was absent in court, and for the notice to be pasted on his last known address. Oricha’s lawyer, Aliyu Saiki (SAN), confirmed that his client had been granted an administrative bail by the prosecution, saying he was not objecting to the application for an adjournment. Hudu’s lawyer, Z. E. Abass, also confirmed the bail grant to his client and agreed to the prosecution’s request for bail. Ruling, Justice Maryanne Anenih granted the request for an adjournment and ordered the issuance of hearing notice to be pasted on the last known address of the first defendant and on a conspicuous place in the court premises. Justice Anenih adjourned till November 27 for hearing the case when Bello is expected to be present in court.

  The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has said a member of the House of Representatives, Alex Ikwechegh is currently being interrogated at its Maitama Divisional Headquarters. Ikwechegh, who represents Aba North & South Federal Constituency, was alleged to have assaulted an e-hailing (Bolt) driver, Stephen Abuwatseya. According to a trending video, the lawmaker slapped the driver When he requested the delivery fee, querying if the driver knew who he was talking to. The lawmaker also threatened to make the driver “disappear” without facing any consequences. In a statement on Monday by the command spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, the police said investigation had commenced into the matter. She added that already, preliminary investigation revealed that Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Ikwegh when a dispute arose concerning the method of delivery. Adeh said, “Alexander Ikwegh, who represents the Aba North and South Federal Constituency in Abia State. The incident occurred on October 27, 2024, at a residence on Zamfara Crescent, Maitama, Abuja. “The FCT Police Command has received a report at the Maitama Divisional Headquarters regarding an incident involving a Bolt driver, Mr. Stephen Abuwatseya, and Hon. Alexander Ikwegh, who represents the Aba North and South Federal Constituency in Abia State. The incident occurred on October 27, 2024, at a residence on Zamfara Crescent, Maitama, Abuja. “Preliminary investigations indicate that Mr Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Hon. Ikwegh when a dispute arose concerning the method of delivery. During this altercation, Mr. Abuwatseya was reportedly physically assaulted. The FCT Police Command expresses grave concern over Hon. Ikwegh’s dismissive attitude toward the office of the Inspector General of Police following the incident. Adeh slammed the lawmaker for bringing the name of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun into disrepute by daring the driver to make calls through to him after slapping him. She said, “After allegedly slapping the victim, he reportedly remarked with contempt, “You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police,” demonstrating a troubling disregard for the authority of law enforcement. “Currently, the suspect is at the Maitama Police Station undergoing questioning.” Adeh added that CP Tunji Disu has ordered a thorough investigation into the matter. She said, “Commissioner of Police, FCT, CP Olatunji Disu, has mandated a thorough investigation into the matter. “The Command is committed to conducting an impartial investigation and ensuring justice in all cases. Upon completion of the investigation, appropriate legal action will be taken.”

Couple Arraigned In Court Over Alleged Abuse Of Two Toddlers In Adamawa

  A 28-year-old woman, Fatima Abubakar, and her husband, Abubakar Yuguda, have been charged to court by the Adamawa State Police Command for alleged criminal conspiracy and cruelty to persons. The arraignment followed the arrest of the couple by the police over the allegation of continuous physical abuse of two minors in their custody The victims, identified as Hafsat Abubakar, aged two, and Usman Abubakar, four years old, are siblings. Thenewsbearer learnt that the couple, residents of Sanda, Makama B Ward in Yola South Local Government Area, were reported by concerned neighbours regarding the continuous physical abuse of two minors, as they were frequently subjected to severe maltreatment by Fatima, their stepmother, before their rescue by the police. It was gathered by Thenewsbearer that after their arrest, both suspects confessed to the crime and were promptly charged to Chief Magistrates Court 2, Jimeta. The police spokesman, SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, said in a statement that the Commissioner of Police, Morris Dankombo, reiterated the command’s commitment to protecting vulnerable members of the society, especially children, and ensuring that perpetrators face justice. He urged the public to always promptly report any incident of abuse to police.

Police Arrest Wanted Alleged Rapist Of TASUED Female Students In Ogun

  The Ogun state police command has confirmed the arrest of a 33-year-old man, Olayemi Shedrack who had been on its wanted list, for the alleged r@pe of some female students of the state-owned Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun after robbing them of valuables. In a statement released, the spokesperson of the command, Omolola Odutola, revealed that the suspect was apprehended in Ijagun through useful information from members of the public while trying to blend with the crowd. “Acting on a tip-off, Olayemi Olawale Shedrack, aged 33, was spotted in Ijagun attempting to blend in with the crowd, but his true identity was verified through intelligence sources. The police were promptly informed and he was promptly arrested. Olayemi Olawale Shedrack has been on police trail for his involvement in armed robbery and sexual assault, he was identified as the main suspect in a reported incident of armed robbery and rape that took place on July 21, 2024. During this crime, he and his accomplices unlawfully entered the female Royal villa accommodation area at Tai University of Education in Ijagun. They stole valuable educational items such as laptops, iPhones, sports watches, and cash from female students, and also committed sexual assault before fleeing the scene”she said She said that a preliminary investigation has been launched and the suspect has been taken to the Igbeba police station, Ijebu-Ode for interrogation. “The public can be assured that the suspect will soon be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for thorough investigation and prosecution. The commissioner of Police, Alamutu Abiodun is aware of the arrest and has ordered the apprehension of Shedrack’s accomplices, he also appeals to the residents of Ijagun to provide credible information to help the police arrest other fleeing criminals” the statement concluded
