Court Sentences Killers of Ogun Couple, Son To Death By Hanging

An Ogun State High Court sitting in Kobape, Abeokuta, the state capital, on Monday sentenced Lekan Adekanbi, Ahmed Odetola, and Waheed Adeniyi to death by hanging for the murder of Kehinde Fatinoye, his wife, Bukola Fatinoye, and their son, Oreoluwa, on January 1, 2023. The couple was attacked at their Ibara GRA residence shortly after returning from a crossover service. Led by their driver, Adekanbi, the assailants invaded their home at about 2am, killing them before setting the house and their bodies on fire. They also tied up their son, Oreoluwa, and an adopted son before throwing them into the Ogun River. Oreoluwa did not survive, but the adopted son miraculously escaped. During an interview with journalists in February 2023, Adekanbi confessed that he orchestrated the attack because the Fatinoyes refused to increase his salary or grant him a loan. “I took the step because the couple refused to increase my salary, and when I approached them for a loan to buy a motorcycle, they didn’t oblige,” he admitted. He revealed that he invited two accomplices, Odetola and Adeniyi, to help him rob the couple. “The three of us waited for the couple until they came back from the crossover service. We pounced on them immediately after they entered the house,” he said. According to him, they forced Kehinde Fatinoye to transfer N1,102,000 to his Access Bank account at gunpoint after a previous transfer attempt to Odetola’s Kuda Bank account failed. “When I realised that my identity had been exposed through my bank account, I decided with others to terminate the lives of the couple,” he confessed. Adeniyi then used a knife to slaughter Kehinde Fatinoye, while Adekanbi struck Bukola Fatinoye on the head with a sledgehammer, killing her instantly. When the couple’s son, Oreoluwa, and their adopted son, Felix Olorunyomi, walked in, the criminals tied them up and threw them into the Ogun River. Felix managed to escape. The Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, recounted how Adekanbi initially escaped from custody after faking an illness. “The suspect, Lekan Adekanbi, suddenly collapsed in the cell on January 2, 2023, and was rushed to the hospital for medical care. But while receiving treatment, he suddenly jumped from the bed and escaped through the hospital fence,” Oyeyemi said. Following a technical and intelligence-driven investigation, police tracked him to his brother’s house in Iseyin, Oyo State. Although he had fled before officers arrived, he was later arrested in Abeokuta on January 21, 2023. His accomplices, Odetola and Adeniyi, were arrested in Ogere on February 9, 2023. “The three suspects, who are members of the Aiye confraternity, have all confessed to their roles in the gruesome and callous murder of the family,” Oyeyemi stated. Adekanbi, Odetola, and Adeniyi, along with six others, were charged with 24 counts, including conspiracy to commit armed robbery, murder, arson, and perverting the course of justice. They pleaded not guilty. Delivering her judgment, Justice Basirat Adebowale ruled, “The trio of Adekanbi, Odetola, and Adeniyi are guilty of nine counts because the prosecution has proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.” Adebowale sentenced them to death by hanging. “You, Adekanbi, Odetola, and Adeniyi, for killing a father, mother, and son, do not deserve mercy. You are hereby sentenced to be hanged by the neck until you are dead or by lethal injection. May God have mercy on your souls,” she declared. Other sentences included: Temitope Fadairo (Adekanbi’s wife) to two years imprisonment for hiding her husband, Adenike Adekanbi (Adekanbi’s mother) to one-year imprisonment for providing false statements to the police, Azeez Usman (the welder who dismantled the stolen vehicle) to 14 years imprisonment for receiving stolen property, plus additional sentences to run concurrently, Anuoluwapo Owolaja to two years imprisonment, Abass Odetola and Lukmon Adewusi were discharged of all charges. During the trial, Chief State Counsel, Adefisoye Temilola, told the court that the trio committed the crime at Karounwi Street, Ibara Housing Estate, Abeokuta. “The defendants, while armed with a gun, hammer, and cutlass, robbed Mr. Fatinoye of N1.102 million and a Hyundai vehicle worth N12 million. They also robbed Mrs. Bukola Fatinoye of her phones valued at N1 million,” Temilola said. After robbing the couple, Adeniyi used a knife to slaughter Kehinde Fatinoye, while Adekanbi struck Bukola on the head with a sledgehammer. “They set the house ablaze and killed their only son, Oreoluwa, by tying his hands and legs and throwing him into the Ogun River, leading to his death,” she concluded.

Babcock Varsity Worker, One Other Die In Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Crash

The Ogun State Police Command on Sunday reported an accident along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway at about 7:15am just before Danco Filling Station, claiming two lives while five others were severely injured. The crash involved a Toyota Sienna space bus with registration number EPE 430 HT driven by one Adewale Yusuf and a stationary luxury bus with plate number KTU 835 XY belonging to Young Shall Grow Transport Company and driven by Chukwudi Ilo of Anambra State. The spokesperson for the state police command, Chief Superintendent of Police, Omolola Odutola, disclosed this in a statement sent to journalists on Sunday. Odutola said “Investigations revealed that the luxury bus had stopped in traffic behind other vehicles due to a minor accident ahead when the Toyota Sienna, coming at high speed, lost control and crashed into its rear. “As a result, five passengers in the Sienna bus sustained severe injuries and were rushed to Live Well Hospital, Sagamu while two male passengers, identified as Charles Izuchukwu, a staff member of Babcock University, and another unidentified male occupant, succumbed to their injuries at the hospital. “The deceased were deposited at Last Home Green Mortuary, Sagamu while the driver of the Sienna bus and two other injured passengers are receiving medical attention.” However, the Motor Traffic Department promptly responded to the scene, documented the incident, and cleared the wreckage to restore normal traffic flow. Both vehicles have been towed to the MTD Office, Sagamu, for further investigation and inspection by the Vehicle Inspection Officers. Meanwhile, the command has continued to emphasize that reckless driving, excessive speeding, and negligence remain major causes of road crashes. The police also listed factors significantly contributing to accidents including driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, use of expired or substandard tires, lack of focus, and disregard for traffic regulations as well as prioritizing financial gain over passengers’ safety. The command has therefore urged all motorists, particularly commercial drivers, to exercise caution, adhere to speed limits, and avoid reckless behaviours that endanger lives. Drivers were also warned against substance abuse and must ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on any journey. The police said they remained committed to enforcing traffic regulations to reduce road fatalities and that any driver violating road safety rules would face legal consequences. The public has also been encouraged to report reckless drivers and unsafe road conditions to the nearest police station or road safety officers.

Opposition Woos Obasa As Removal Divides Lagos APC

The removal of a former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has continued to deepen division within the All Progressives Congress in the state. This was as opposition parties declared readiness to welcome the embattled lawmaker should he consider leaving the ruling party. Since Obasa’s impeachment on January 13, 2025, by a majority of lawmakers over alleged misconduct and financial misappropriation, his removal has sparked conflicting reactions among members of the Governance Advisory Council, the highest decision-making body of the APC in Lagos. The division became evident when two GAC members, Senator Anthony Adefuye and Chief Muraina Taiwo, who opposed Obasa’s removal, were criticised by another member of the group, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, who dismissed their comments as “childish and inconsequential.” In an interview with Sunday PUNCH, Adefuye had criticised the process that led to Obasa’s removal, while Taiwo, in a brief WhatsApp message, stated, “The lawmakers’ action is illegal. It shows total disregard and clear disrespect for leadership. The GAC is split over the matter, but we will all defer to our leader, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to resolve the crisis.” However, Obanikoro rebuked both men, urging party leaders to refrain from making hasty statements on the issue. The Lagos State House of Assembly has said it expects Obasa to return to the House before determining the next course of action, including a possible probe. However, as of the time of filing this report, it was unclear whether the former Speaker had appeared before the House, as the Assembly’s spokesperson, Olukayode Ogundipe, did not respond to calls on Friday. Meanwhile, opposition parties in the state told our correspondent on Friday that they were open to accommodating the embattled former Speaker should he decide to exit the ruling party amid the ongoing crisis. The Vice Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state, Benedict Tai, said the party would implement appropriate checks if Obasa eventually joined them. “If we accept him into the party, we will put checks and balances in place because no one can just come in and demand a position. The person must have spent years in the party. We need to be sure he isn’t coming to disrupt the party, as some have done in the past,” he stated. He noted that the PDP welcomed the crisis within the APC and intended to capitalise on it to regain lost ground in the state. “If disunity is an obstacle to their party, then we hope it worsens for them. They are our main challenge. The current situation in Lagos is favourable for the PDP, provided we learn from our mistakes and take advantage of their shortcomings,” Tai added. Similarly, the Labour Party in Lagos expressed its willingness to welcome Obasa should he consider leaving the APC ahead of the 2027 governorship election. The Chairman of the party, Pastor Dayo Ekong, said the LP had no problem integrating Obasa into its ranks as long as his interests aligned with the party’s vision and principles. “If the impeached Speaker chooses to join the Labour Party, he will be welcomed because our party is open to everyone. As a party driven by the right ideals, we don’t want to interfere in APC affairs. However, if Obasa decides to join us, he will be accepted, provided his interests align with what the LP stands for,” Ekong stated. When asked whether Obasa might receive preferential treatment due to his political status and rumoured governorship ambition, Ekong said, “There are no automatic rights anywhere. People were at the party before he came in. What we will do is allow everyone to go through the primaries and test their popularity. It’s not about granting an automatic ticket to anyone. “Don’t forget that the 2023 LP governorship candidate is still in the party. But when we get to that bridge, we will cross it.”

World NTDs Day: “We’ve Invested N30m on Disease Elimination” – Oyo Govt

The Oyo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to eradicating Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) with a substantial investment of ₦30 million in disease elimination efforts across the 33 Local Government Areas in the State. Speaking at a press briefing to mark the 2025 World NTDs Day, the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, highlighted the state’s achievements in combating these diseases over the past year. She noted that NTDs which include lymphatic filariasis (elephantiasis), onchocerciasis (river blindness), schistosomiasis, and soil-transmitted helminths, disproportionately impact the poorest and most marginalized communities, perpetuating cycles of poverty and limiting opportunities for growth and development. She said that among the most notable accomplishments of the State government is the successful implementation of the Mass Administration of Medicines (MAM) program, a major initiative aimed at eliminating NTDs. Through this program, the government trained 18,000 Community Drug Distributors (CDDs), who demonstrated exceptional dedication by reaching 13,401 communities across 298 wards in the state. According to her, these frontline health workers played crucial roles in delivering essential medications to prevent and treat lymphatic filariasis and onchocerciasis. Additionally, the state has strengthened its healthcare workforce by equipping 641 health workers at the Local Government Area (LGA) level with the necessary tools and knowledge to supervise and support community-based efforts, ensuring the program’s effectiveness. To further enhance coordination and implementation, 31 Directors of Environmental Health and Environmental Health Officers were trained to oversee NTD interventions within their respective LGAs. Dr. Ajetunmobi emphasized the state’s unwavering resolve to eliminate NTDs, recognizing their detrimental impact on public health, productivity, and overall well-being. “Here in Oyo State, we are acutely aware of the challenges posed by NTDs. These diseases affect the health and productivity of our people, but we remain resolute in our commitment to eliminating them through strategic investments, partnerships, and innovative approaches.” The Commissioner expressed profound appreciation to His Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde, for his steadfast commitment to improving healthcare in the state. She acknowledged that the Governor’s approval of the funds for the MAM program last year demonstrates his administration’s dedication to making healthcare a priority. She also extended gratitude to major development partners, including the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, CBM, Evidence Action, and other stakeholders whose support has been instrumental in advancing Oyo State’s fight against NTDs. Earlier in his remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Oyo State Ministry of Health, Dr. Akintunde Ayinde, underscored the importance of continuous awareness and community-led interventions in combating NTDs. The event was attended by key stakeholders, representatives from collaborating Ministries, and health sector partners, all of whom commended the government’s proactive measures toward ensuring a healthier, NTD-free Oyo State. The day’s activities featured the free distribution of essential medicines and an extensive sensitization campaign across major streets and markets in Ibadan.

Ex-Milan Boss Paulo Fonseca Becomes New Lyon Coach

Former AC Milan coach Paulo Fonseca was appointed head coach of Ligue 1 side Lyon on Friday, following the departure of Pierre Sage. The 51-year-old former Portugal international signed a two-and-a-half- year contract and has been tasked with guiding Lyon, who are currently sixth in the table, to Champions League qualification. Fonseca watched from the stands on Thursday alongside Lyon’s American owner John Textor as Lyon secured their place in the last 16 of the Europa League with a 1-1 draw against Bulgaria’s Ludogorets. Sage was an unknown quantity when he was appointed in November 2023 to take over a team that was rooted to the bottom of the French top flight. He revived Lyon’s fortunes, guiding them to European qualification and a French Cup final, which they lost to Paris Saint-Germain. However, he paid the price for a run of five games without a win this month, including a French Cup exit at the hands of fifth-division side Bourgoin-Jallieu. Fonseca, who was sacked by AC Milan in late December, has experience of Ligue 1 after impressing during two years in charge at Lille. However, he faces a battle to win over the Lyon fans who had grown fond of Sage and were angered by his sacking. AFP
