ICYMI: DStv And GOtv Sets To Increase Subscription Prices Again

  Multichoice is set to increase the prices of its DStv and GOtv packages effective from March 1, 2025. This was disclosed in a statement to its customers on Monday. The statement titled, “Price adjustments for DStv and GOtv packages,” read, “Dear Customer, please note that effective 1 March 2025, there will be a price adjustment on all DStv packages.   “This is to enable us to continue to offer our customers world-class homegrown and international content, delivered through the best technology.” Recall that this is coming almost one year after its last price review. According to the company, its latest price review will hike the DStv Compact bouquet from N15,700 to N19,000, the Compact Plus to N30,000, and the Premium subscription to N44,500. Similarly, GOtv customers, who currently pay N3,600, will now pay N3,900, while the tariff on GOtv Plus will rise from N4,850 to N5,800. The GoTV max package will now cost N8,500 while the Supa will cost N11,400 and the Supa Plus, N16,800. MultiChoice, the parent company for DStv and GOtv, claimed the price increase is due to the increasing cost of running a business in Nigeria. It points to currency depreciation, with the naira’s value dropping significantly and high inflation ballooning its operation expenses.

  ABUJA – The Department of State Services (DSS) has demanded an apology and retraction of publications over invasion of Lagos State House of Assembly. The DSS gave Da’ar Communications Plc (AIT), Channels Television, and other media platforms seven (7) days to run apologies in their respective news channels five times a day for three days running, or face legal action. The Legal Counsel to DSS, who issued the notice to the stations, demanded an apology and retraction of reports by them purporting that their operatives invaded the Lagos Assembly on Monday. In a letter dated February 17, 2025, entitled “False, Defamatory and Malicious Publication Concerning the State Security Service (aka DSS) Regarding Their Presence at the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday February 17, 2025,” the Service through its legal team, Adedipe and Adedipe demanded a retraction of the story and apology. According to the Counsel, “even when it was clear that, following fears that hoodlums could attack the lawmakers, it was the Clerk of the Assembly who invited DSS and police personnel to help secure the Assembly, the media houses nonetheless ran reports that their operatives invaded the Assembly Gestapo style.” The Service gave the media organizations seven (7) days to run apologies in their respective news channels five times a day for three days running, or face legal action. Recall that these media outfits alleged that the Secret Service stormed Lagos State House of Assembly to disrupt the business of the House, contrary to facts that the DSS was invited to carry out its statutory duties.

  Federal civil servants have been given a February 17, 2025, deadline for identity verification as the government moves to weed out ghost workers. This was contained in a memo by the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation and sighted by our correspondent on Saturday. Civil servants are expected to verify their identities on the portal of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System amid the planned stoppage of salaries and other sanctions for ghost workers. Our correspondent gathered that civil servants had been in haste to generate their Taxpayers Identification Number to meet the deadline. Part of the requirement for verification is the TIN alongside the IPPIS number and salary account number. The memo read, “Following the Treasury Circular with Ref. No. TRY/A6&B6/2024-OAGF/CAD/026/Vol. V/910 dated 27th June, 2024 on the above subject matter and subsequent extension dated 16 August, 2024, I am directed to inform you that AGF has approved the extension of the OAF-IPPIS Payroll Validation Portal for an additional one week (10 – 17” February, 2025). “The portal will be deployed and made accessible to those employees that were unable to complete their validation before the end of earlier deadline. Visit OAF website: www.oagf.gov.ng and access the portal. “It is hereby emphasised that all employees concerned are expected to conclude update of their payroll information on or before 12 midnight of Monday, February 17, 2025. Please note that officers who fail to avail themselves of this last opportunity may suffer some consequences which may include suspension from the payroll. “Accounting Officers, Directors/Head of Finance & Account and Internal Audit Units of MDAs and other Arms of Government, are enjoined to give this circular the widest circulation it deserves and ensure compliance.” In 2024, President Bola Tinubu directed that all civil servants drawing salaries from the Federal Government after relocating abroad be made to refund the money. The President also directed that the culprits’ supervisors and department heads be punished for aiding and abetting the fraud while they were in charge.

A Nigerian food vendor, Azeez Olayide, has said he and his business partner left their jobs to start selling jollof rice in the United Kingdom. Olayide disclosed this during a recent interview on the programme My Tasty Naija. He said the business name, ‘2 Nigerian Boys’ began in February 2019 at London Financial District, Spitalfield market. According to the businessman, the adventure started when he and his friend wanted to satisfy their appetite with ‘smoky’ jollof rice but did not get it. “The story was just about two Nigerian friends who loved Nigerian foods so much,” Olayide said. “One of them just said, ‘Let’s go to the city and bring jollof rice.’” The two men were dumbfounded on the first day they started the business as they sold all that they had in 30 minutes, giving them the confidence that the business would thrive. “Both of us were amazed and looked at each other in the face and said, ‘We need to quit our jobs and start selling Nigerian foods.’” He stressed that the success of the business was based on its acceptance by the customers who loved the food. “Ninety per cent of our customers are non-Africans, while the remaining 10 per cent are Nigerians. They love the beef when they eat it,” Olayide said. “It is a lunchtime business. We open business between 12pm and 2pm. It gets crazy here with lunchtime.” Another peculiarity of the business is that the food is cooked on-site to announce itself to passers-by and people. Meanwhile, he disclosed that a branch of the business has been opened in Briston after feedback from customers in London. Olayide, however, declined to reveal his business partner, whom he called ‘a magician’ and was the brain behind the cooking of the jollof rice. “You can’t see the person performing the magic. The second Nigerian boy is a magician who makes the Nigerian Boys come together for a business,” he added.

    Names of suspended senior officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) over allegations of bribery linked to controversial crossdresser Idris Okuneye, aka Bobrisky have emerged. In response to the widespread allegations, the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire, and Immigration Services Board, in a statement signed by Ja’afaru Ahmed on Thursday, announced the suspension of the officers allegedly involved in the bribery. This is according to a statement by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on his official Facebook page on Thursday. See Their Names Below; Michael Anugwa: Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC), in charge of the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) in Kirikiri, Lagos State Sikiru Adekunle: Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC), in charge of the maximum Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) in Kirikiri, Lagos State. ASC II Ogbule Samuel Obinna: an officer stationed at the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) in Afikpo, Ebonyi State, for allegedly escorting a convicted inmate outside the facility to an unauthorised location. Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC) Iloafonsi Kevin Ikechukwu: the officer in charge of the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) in Kuje, Abuja, for allegedly accepting payments on behalf of an inmate. The statement partly read: “Following the viral video trending on social media on alleged infractions by Officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service relating to Mr. Idris Okuneye, widely known as Bobrisky, the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board has suspended forthwith the following Senior Officers of the Service: “Michael Anugwa, Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC), charge of Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC), Kiri-kiri, Lagos State; and Sikiru Adekunle, Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC), charge of Maximum-Security Custodial Centre (MSCC), Kiri-kiri, Lagos State.” The board stressed that the suspensions were implemented to facilitate thorough investigations into the allegations against the officers. Also, the board assured the public that the findings of the investigations would be disclosed upon conclusion. As of press time, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, EFCC, NCoS, and the House of Representatives have ordered investigations into the allegations.
