UPDATED: Popular Nollywood Actor Alex Ekubo Passes away at 40

Popular Nollywood actor, Alex Ekubo, is dead. He was 40. His death was confirmed on Tuesday by his colleagues, Funke Akindele, Bolanle Ninalowo, and Godwin Nnadiekwe, who claimed to be his ally. Sharing on her Instagram story, Akindele wrote, “Hmmmmmm. Rest in peace, Alex. I tried to reach out to see you one more time, but I guess you knew best. May your kind soul rest in peace, Alex. ‘Ore mi like you fondly called me, I will always remember and cherish the good times we shared together. Rest in Peace, Alex.” Meanwhile, Ninalowo, who is now in the United States, also mourned on his page, writing, “Rest on, Alex. May God heal your family and us all.” Nnadiekwe, on the other hand, shared, “I’m struggling to find the words. This news has truly broken me. Nollywood has lost a rare soul, and I’m lost for words because this wasn’t the plan, Alex Ekubo. To think you already prepared your Will — It’s heartbroken, I can’t quite describe. Rest well, my friend.” As of the time of filing this report, his family has not issued a statement on his death. Recall that fans across social media recently expressed concerns for Ekubo following his first public appearance after months of social media silence. The light-skinned movie star had been absent from Instagram since December 30, 2024, sparking speculation about his well-being. However, a recent video that surfaced online brought him back into the spotlight, though it also raised further questions. In the viral clip, Ekubo was seen interacting with a group of children, appearing noticeably slimmer and subdued. The video, posted by user @AsakyGRN on X (formerly Twitter), was captioned, “Alex Ekubo spotted for the first time since disappearing from social media.” The footage triggered a wave of emotional reactions from fans, many of whom noted a significant change in his appearance and questioned his wellbeing. Before his demise, the actor dismissed marriage in favour of his quest to earn more money in the film industry. In January 2023, his then-lover, Fancy Acholonu, in an interview, revealed that she dated the late actor for five years without them having any intimacy. The US-based model also called off her wedding to Ekubo in December 2021, after apologising to the film star a year later for calling it off. Acholonu affirmed her love for the actor, saying that “like our shirt says, Nothing makes sense when we’re apart @alexxekubo you still have my heart. “I miss you, I love you, and I’m truly sorry for all the hurt & pain you and your family went through with our breakup.” She noted that her actions were out of character, and she has realised she could have controlled her emotions and not been so overreactive. However, in a post on his Instagram page, Ekubo implied that he was aware that some people were curious about why he has not yet been married. The film star said he was more interested in making money. He urged people not to bother about his marital status.

UPDATED: Dangote Refinery Slashes Petrol Price Again

Fresh from implementing a ₦15 price reduction in its loading cost for Premium Motor Spirit, also known as petrol, the Dangote Refinery has again slashed its refined product prices to make them cheaper, cutting its ex-depot rate to ₦835 per litre. The new price represents a ₦30 reduction from ₦865 per litre implemented six days ago, marking a 3.5 per cent decrease, and a ₦45 reduction from the ₦880 per litre sold by the facility last Wednesday. This price cut marks Dangote’s third downward adjustment in under six weeks. PUNCH Online gathered that the refinery informed its customers in a notice sent out on Wednesday morning. A pro forma invoice was sighted by our correspondent, and checks on petroleumprice.ng also confirmed the development. It stated that the new price is inclusive of charges by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA). The document detailing the revised price structure shows that PMS at the gantry will now sell for ₦835 per litre, inclusive of NMDPRA statutory levies, while coastal sales remain on hold. The diesel gantry price is set at $608 plus a $70 surcharge, payable either in naira at ₦1,650/$ or in USD. Coastal sales are also on hold. Jet fuel will be sold at $664.75 with a $42 gantry surcharge and a $22 coastal surcharge. Prices for cooking gas at both gantry and coastal points are currently on hold. On Wednesday, PUNCH Online hinted at a possible price cut after the landing cost of imported petrol dropped to ₦853 per litre on Tuesday. This development comes as marketers secured regulatory approval to import 117,000 metric tonnes—equivalent to 156.897 million litres—of petrol within eight days, from 8 to 16 April 2025, to boost fuel supply nationwide. These figures were revealed in separate documents obtained by our correspondent from the Nigerian Ports Authority and the Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria. Dealers said the ₦853 per litre spot import parity into tanks, which includes expenses such as shipping, import duties, and exchange rates, marks a notable ₦3 reduction from ₦856.75 per litre last Monday and ₦852.02 on Tuesday. The document showed that on-the-spot sales at the NPSC-NOJ terminal dropped to ₦853.12 per litre, while the 30-day average cost also declined to ₦844.84 per litre. Within the period, marketers brought in six vessels conveying 117,000 metric tonnes through Tin Can Port in Lagos and Calabar Port in Cross River State. Importantly, the continued price drop coincides with the restart and full implementation of the Naira-for-Crude agreement with local refiners after an earlier suspension. The Ministry of Finance disclosed this in a statement published last week on its official X handle, titled: “Update on the Crude and Refined Product Sales in Naira Initiative.” The statement followed a meeting on Tuesday between the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, and representatives from Dangote Refinery—a major beneficiary of the agreement — to review progress and address ongoing implementation issues. The committee stated that the policy is not a temporary measure but a long-term strategy to reduce Nigeria’s dependence on foreign exchange for petroleum. It added that the initiative is a key policy directive designed to support sustainable local refining and strengthen energy security. Punch

UPDATED: S’Court Dismisses Fubara’s Appeal Against Amaewhule-led Rivers Assembly

An appeal filed by Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, challenging the leadership of the Rivers State House of Assembly has been dismissed by the Supreme Court in Abuja. Fubara was also ordered to pay N2m to the Assembly and the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, by a five-member panel led by Justice Uwani Abba-Aji on Monday. The case was dismissed after Fubara’s lawyer, Yusuf Ali, withdrew the suit. Recall that on October 10, 2024, the Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, admonished Fubara for failing to follow the rule of law in his actions. The court ruled that his decision to present the 2024 Rivers State Appropriation Bill to only four out of 31 members of the Assembly was a gross violation of the 1999 Constitution, as amended. The court stated that presenting the budget to just four members contradicted the Nigerian Constitution. It added, “The appellant hurriedly submitted the Rivers State Appropriation Bill to four members, who then considered, deliberated on, and passed it into law within a few hours.” The court further held that Fubara’s actions violated Section 96 of the 1999 Constitution, which requires at least one-third of the Assembly members to form a quorum. The court noted that “four out of 31 members cannot, by any stretch of the imagination, constitute the required quorum for legislative business.” Meanwhile, Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court also ruled against Fubara’s presentation of the 2024 budget before the four-member Assembly led by Edison Ehie. The budget presentation was a result of the leadership crisis within the Rivers State House of Assembly. Fubara had argued that the Amaewhule-led faction lost its legitimacy after defecting from the People’s Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress. However, the lower courts ruled that he failed to provide evidence of their defection and, therefore, could not legally present the budget to a four-member House. Following the Court of Appeal judgment, Fubara approached the Supreme Court to set aside the lower court’s ruling and allow him to present the budget to the Ehie-led faction. However, when the case was called on Monday, Fubara’s counsel, Yusuf Ali, informed the Supreme Court that the governor had decided to withdraw the appeal. Ali stated that a notice dated February 6 had already been filed, explaining that the appeal had been overtaken by events. All 17 respondents in the case, represented by various lawyers, did not oppose the withdrawal. However, J.B. Daudu (SAN), representing the 3rd to 12th respondents (National Assembly and its leadership), and Wole Olanipekun (SAN), representing the 1st and 2nd respondents (Rivers State House of Assembly and Amaewhule), requested a cost of N2 million. Daudu further urged the court to dismiss the appeal rather than strike it out, as issues had already been joined. The five-member Supreme Court panel dismissed the appeal after confirming that the withdrawal was not opposed. In a brief ruling, Justice Abba-Aji declared the appeal dismissed and awarded a cost of N2 million in favour of the 1st to 12th respondents. Punch
