Reps Caucus Leadership Not Based On Appointment, LP Lawmakers Tell Abure

  The Labour Party caucus in the House of Representatives has laughed off the purported sack of its Chairman, Afam Ogene by the embattled National Chairman of the party, Mr Julius Abure. Ogene, a member representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency, Anambra State, had while reacting to Friday’s Supreme Court judgment which removed Abure from office, pledged the readiness of the LP House of Representatives caucus to work with the party’s National Caretaker Committee led by Senator Nenadi Usman. Abure, however, announced Ogene’s sack on Monday, in what may be another feud within the party’s fold. In a statement issued by Ogene on Tuesday, on behalf of the caucus, the lawmaker elected on the platform of the Labour Party reminded Abure that it is their duty to name their leader based on personal conviction. The statement partly read, “The Labour Party legislators have emphasised that the position of a caucus Leader is not an office based on appointment; rather the leader is chosen/elected by peers based on their own conviction of his/her leadership qualities and capacity to speak on their behalf in the overall interest of the party and the people they represent. We state this in response to several inquiries from the media and other party faithful arising from developments after the Supreme Court pronouncement sacking the LP Chairman.” “On May 6, 2023, a 35-member Labour Party caucus in the 10th Assembly of the House of Representatives elected Hon Afam Ogene as its Leader. Ogene, a ranking member from the 7th Assembly, emerged as the Labour Party leader with 21 votes, after a keenly contested election. Although 34 members-elect of the party were present at the voting session, only 31 of them took part in the exercise, with the trio of Honourables Okey-Joe Onuakalusi, Obi Aguocha and Professor Lilian Oby Orogbu abstaining, being persons who conducted the exercise. “So, it’s only the members of the caucus who overwhelmingly elected him, that have the right to remove him as leader, not “an authoritarian power thirsty individual that’s still battling, without much success, to extricate himself from the muddy waters of multiple allegations of malfeasance,” the caucus said in a statement signed by Ogene on Tuesday. He added, “If Abure’s latest ill-advised tactics is because of the stand of the caucus lauding the judgement of the Supreme court, which unequivocally declared that Abure’s tenure has long lapsed, then he is way off-mark, because that remains the majority position of LP House of Representatives members – a fact that would be reinforced on Wednesday, April 9, by the number of legislators that will attend the NEC/Stakeholders meeting convened by the Party’s National Leader, Mr Peter Obi and Governor Alex Otti. “We need to let Abure know, and boldly too, that the Labour Party is a credible organisation and not a ponzi scheme … . From Ebonyi, to Plateau, Ondo, Edo (where he embarrassed the party through his undignified episodes with the police), it’s all about slush funds and compromise of the integrity of the office of a party National Chairman. Even in Anambra last week, the mention of the name Abure has continued to emit a putrid smell of financial malfeasance. “He may wish to tell Nigerians, and the world, what is at the centre of his feud with Eze Oko Splendour of Ebonyi State, Kenneth Imasuagbon in Edo, and the aspirants that took part in last weekend’s Anambra LP gubernatorial farce. It is appalling that a man who is yet to account for party finances arising from the 2023 general elections, nor leaves any penny in the party’s account – despite raising hundreds of million naira in sale of forms and other gratifications in several off-season elections – would be so engrossed in wanting to access funds belonging to the House of Representatives caucus, which only points to the depths Abure can go… “Ironically, no sane organ of the party would entrust the Supreme Court-sacked former national chairman with money, no matter how little, at least, until he is able to cleanse himself of the twin evil of allegations of forgery levied against him by former national treasurer of the LP, Oluchi Oparah. Funds belonging to the caucus are intact, and would only be deployed in a manner prescribed by members, not by the former chairman’s discretion. The Labour Party deserves a clean break from that integrity-deficient leadership history, to a future that all party faithful will be proud to associate with.” Punch  

Assembly Bombing: Ex-Rivers HoS’ Revelation Vindicates Us – Okocha

  The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Rivers, Chief Tony Okocha on Wednesday, stated that the recent claim by the former Rivers State Head of Service, George Nwaeke, that the suspended Governor, Siminalayi Fubara and his Chief of Staff, Edison Ehie, were behind the bombing of the state House of Assembly has validated their earlier position. He made the clarification in a statement issued in Abuja. Okocha, an ally of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, was reacting to an earlier claim by Nwaeke that he witnessed a bag of money being handed over to him by the governor to allegedly burn down the Assembly Complex along Moscow Road in Port Harcourt. The camp of Fubara, through Ehie, has since denied the allegation, saying Nwaeke was not in the right frame of mind when he made the allegation. But Okocha insisted that Nwaeke’s open confession on the live television show did not come to the Rivers APC as a surprise. He said, “Nwaeke’s account further corroborates the position of Rivers APC that Fubara is the architect of the entire political crisis in the state, leading to the swift declaration of a state of emergency by President Bola Tinubu to restore order and forestall a total breakdown of peace. “The truth is like broad daylight, which shines through the darkness and repels darkness to bring forth daylight. It is important to state here, for the purpose of emphasis and clarity, that Nwaeke, as the Head of Service at the time, was the number three man in the State. As such, his account cannot be hearsay. “Taxpayers’ money in Rivers State was wasted in a way and manner that cannot be forgotten in a hurry amidst scarce resources and global economic crunch. The Supreme Court put it rightly in its unanimous judgment delivered on 28th February 2025 by describing Fubara as a “dictator.” Yes, he was a dictator!” Continuing, Okocha called on security agencies to investigate the claim and bring all those involved, whether directly or indirectly, to book. BREAKING: Edo Tribunal Dismisses Action Alliance’s Petition Against Okpebholo, APC.

  The Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in Abuja has dismissed the petition filed by the Action Alliance and Adekunle Omoaje against the election of Governor Monday Okpebholo, the All Progressives Congress and the Independent National Electoral Commission. In its judgment on Wednesday, the three-member tribunal struck out the petition, describing it as lacking merit and frivolous. AA and Omoaje had challenged Okpebholo’s victory in the September 21, 2024, governorship election, alleging corrupt practices and non-compliance with the Electoral Act. They argued that the APC candidate did not secure the majority of lawful votes and that INEC’s declaration of Okpebholo as governor was illegal and unconstitutional. The petitioners also claimed that AA was denied the opportunity to field a governorship candidate, as the nomination form had not been signed by the party’s National Chairman. INEC had declared Okpebholo winner with 291,667 votes, defeating his closest rival, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party, who polled 247,655 votes. In its judgment, the tribunal ruled that Omoaje lacked the legal standing to challenge the election since he did not participate in the poll. It also held that his claims, which stemmed from his non-recognition as AA’s National Chairman by INEC, had no basis under the Electoral Act 2022. I was offered N5bn bribe to impeach Fubara – Rivers Chief of Staff

  Edison Ehie, the Chief of Staff to suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has alleged that he was offered N5 billion to coordinate the impeachment of his principal. Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Ehie claimed he has evidence of the bribe offer stored on his phone. “I can also open my phone to show you, in the beginning of October 2023, when they approached me with a bribe of N5 billion. It is here in my phone, “It was for impeachment. It’s here. I have it and I have printed it and distributed it, in case, in their evil imagination, they decide to attack me. I already have a son and a brother,” he said. Ehie said the offer was made while he was serving as the majority leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly. The Chief of Staff also denied claims that he orchestrated the October 30, 2023, bombing of the Rivers Assembly complex on Fubara’s orders. The allegation was made by a former Head of Service in the state, George Nwaeke, during a press conference last Friday. Nwaeke had alleged that he witnessed a bag of money being handed over to Ehie at the Government House to execute the operation, though he admitted he did not know the amount inside. Dismissing the claims as false and politically motivated, Ehie said, “It is very important to clarify that I had no hand and was not part of the burning down of the Rivers State House of Assembly. “Like everyone else, I woke up in the early hours of 30th of October 2023 to hear of the burning down of the Rivers State House of Assembly.” Ehie stated that he had instructed his lawyers to file a lawsuit against Nwaeke for criminal libel. “I will not join issues completely with Mr. George Nwaeke because I have already instructed my lawyers to file an issue of criminal libel against him, and I hope he is very prepared to substantiate his claims and his allegations,” he said. He further alleged that Nwaeke had sought financial assistance from him on the same day he resigned as head of service. Rivers State has been in turmoil since Fubara’s fallout with his predecessor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike. On March 18, President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in the state and suspended both the governor and his deputy. LP Supporters Protest Natasha’s Suspension In Abuja

  Some Labour Party supporters on Tuesday protested against the suspension of the Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, for gross misconduct. The protesters, led by LP National Youth Leader Prince Kennedy Ahanotu, also filed a petition urging a severe sanction to be meted out to LP legislators and Senator Neda Imasuen, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct and Public Petitions, over his role in the matter. Akpoti-Uduaghan had petitioned the senate for sexual harassment allegation against the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio. She was then handed a six-month suspension following a recommendation by Imasuen’s committee after her petition was dismissed at a probe hearing. The Edo South Senator stated that the petition was “dead on arrival,” citing a breach of Order 40 of the Senate Standing Order. Addressing journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, Ahanotu expressed disappointment in the manner Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended without any opposition lawmaker coming to her rescue. The LP chieftain urged the leadership of the Senate to consider rescinding its decision and revisit the case again. He said, “We, the Nigerian youths, have, in clear terms, condemned such rascality perpetrated by the Ethics and Privilege committee led by Neda Imasuen in clear violation of an order of the court. Given such a hasty decision to suspend Natasha, Imasuen and his subsequent posturing have no doubt left everyone in shock. “We, therefore, make the following demands: That the 10th Senate should immediately rescind the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and reconstitute a morally and mentally balanced committee to do proper investigative hearing of the matter to salvage the already tainted image of the 10th Senate. “We demand that Senator Neda Imasuen be recused from the reconstituted Committee. The Nigerians Youths are, by this statement, calling on the people of Edo South to immediately commence a recall process for Senator Neda Imasuen for his poor representation and conduct at the Senate.” Continuing, Ahanotu noted that they were even more disappointed that Imasuen allegedly allowed himself to be used as a willing tool in the hands of Natasha’s oppressors. He, therefore, called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the matter to save Nigeria’s fledgling democracy. “Senator Imasuen has deviated from the ideology of the Labour Party. Unlike other parties where your sins are forgiven once you cross over, we know LP wouldn’t allow any erring members to go free. “We urge President Bola Tinubu to save the face of Nigeria in the comity of nations by speaking up against the humiliation suffered by the female gender in Nigerian politics, which his wife, as a serving Senator in the 9th Assembly, also faced. “Nigerian youths are also demanding that the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, must present himself for investigation by an unbiased arm of government. A situation where one man will be a judge in his matter like Senator Akpabio did, must be denounced and condemned,” he appealed. Punch

[UPDATED] Rivers Crisis: Resign Or Be Impeached, Okocha Tells Fubara

  The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State, Tony Okocha, has called on the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara to resign or face impeachment. Okocha made the call while describing the invitation of the 27 lawmakers to a meeting by Fubara as a Greek gift. Recall that Fubara in a letter signed by the Secretary to the Rivers state government, Tammy Danagogo, invited the lawmakers to a meeting following the outcome of the Supreme Court judgement which validated the 27 lawmakers as the authentic legislature in the state. But briefing newsmen in Port Harcourt on Monday, Okocha wondered if the governor has now bent over backwards after a protracted grandstanding. Okocha further said the party had resolved to take a firm stance against the governor, whom he described as ‘clueless’ the latter has not only flouted the law but also disrespected President Bola Tinubu who had intervened in the political crisis in the state with an eight-point agenda most of which the governor failed to implement. He stated, “The APC remains the major opposition party in Rivers State. We are the voice of the voiceless. When we said Siminalayi Fubara was clueless, we were not joking. The evidence is clear. “The governor behaves like a saint, but he is a dangerous snake. His meeting agenda with the lawmakers is puerile. Is he inviting them to discuss the Supreme Court judgment? “And why was the invitation letter signed by the Secretary to the State Government instead of the governor himself? It’s an aberration. As far as I’m concerned it is a Greek Gift. Okocha noted that the party would not stand idly by while the governor allegedly in his words ‘run the state aground’ with his style of governance. “The options before Siminalayi Joseph Fubara are two: he should honourably resign or be impeached because he has run the state aground and disrespected Mr President. “The invitation to the lawmakers is a Greek Gift. The Supreme Court Judgement is final. There is nothing anybody can do about it. The only option available to the Governor now is for him to resign or be impeached. And he should be honourable about it. “If he refuses to resign, he will be impeached. I don’t need to be a member of the Rivers State House of Assembly to know the numerous impeachable offences he has committed. There is no government in Rivers State.” Okocha alleged that the governor’s continued stay in office could lead to political instability, saying, “The State is already sitting on a keg of gunpowder, and with a little spark, it will explode. Natasha: I Never Called For Your Resignation, Saraki Chides Akpabio

  A former governor of Kwara State, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has dismissed the subtle allegation by Senate President Godswill Akpabio that some notable “individuals” are seeking his removal from office following the sexual harassment scandal involving Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. Saraki described the claims as “cheap politics and a trivialisation of a serious issue.” Saraki clarified his position in a press release issued by the head of his media office, Yusuph Olaniyonu, in Abuja. The former Senate President was responding to Akpabio’s statement alleging that certain individuals from Adamawa and Kwara States were looking forward to his resignation. Akpabio made the remarks on Friday night while addressing a delegation of youth leaders from various ethnic nationalities at the Senate Guest House in Maitama, Abuja. In his address, Akpabio suggested that these individuals, despite being aware of the Senate rules regarding unethical conduct, were intentionally disregarding the real issues due to opposition politics. He further emphasised that, as Senate President, he represents not just his constituency and party but an entire region that had not held the position for the past 46 years. Although Akpabio did not name anyone, political observers speculated that he was referring to his predecessor, Saraki, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who hail from Kwara and Adamawa, respectively. However, Saraki, in a statement on Sunday, argued that his call for transparency and an open process to investigate the allegations against Akpabio was not an attempt to remove a “Niger Delta person” from office, as Akpabio insinuated. The former Senate President urged Akpabio to revisit his earlier press statement dated March 1, noting that he neither suggested nor called for his resignation. Saraki stated: “Ordinarily, I would have ignored the statement as a sign of the times in which we now live. However, the underlying motive of politicising and trivialising a serious issue that threatens the integrity, credibility, and importance of the legislature is why we must not allow the Senate President to create a misleading impression of the issue at stake.” He further clarified: “In my last comment on the Akpabio-Akpoti-Uduaghan crisis, I never called on the Senate President to resign or step aside. Rather, I urged him to recognise that perception is reality. He should avoid handling the allegations in a way that creates the impression the Senate is covering up issues concerning sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and abuse of office.” Saraki also criticised Akpabio for exploiting ethnic and political sentiments, saying such an approach would not serve his interests or the institution he leads. “This issue is not one in which Akpabio should exploit ethnic sentiments, political division, or regional proclivity. This will neither benefit him nor the institution over which he presides. He should face the reality on the ground and do what is right,” Saraki added. He reiterated that his suggestions were for the benefit of the legislative institution, stressing that his stance was not influenced by Akpabio’s political party or region of origin. “When sensitive matters such as sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and mistreatment of women are raised, they evoke the pains that thousands of women experience daily. It is disingenuous and crude to describe my comments along those primordial lines,” Saraki explained. He concluded by emphasising the need for transparency in handling such cases within legislative institutions. “When such issues arise in a place like the legislature, it is an opportunity to address them with utmost openness and transparency, ensuring justice is not only done but seen to be done. People like me, who have made sacrifices to defend the integrity of the legislature, will not stop speaking up for the right thing to be done,” Saraki affirmed. Punch

Osun APC Slams Adeleke’s $20m Fraud Claims Against Oyetola As Baseless

  The Osun chapter of the All Progressives Congress on Sunday debunked the allegations of misappropriation of a $20m World Bank health grant levelled against the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola in a petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission by Governor Ademola Adeleke. Adeleke also accused the past governor of money laundering, financial misconduct and violations of the Public Procurement Act in the disbursement of the grant meant for health sector improvements in the state. In the acknowledged copy of the petition dated March 7 obtained by our correspondent last Friday, Oyetola reportedly set up a committee during his tenure as governor that expended $20m on renovating 320 primary health care centres across the state. But Osun government’s lawyer, Pelumi Olajengbesi claimed the programme tagged ‘Save One Million Lives, was a flagrant violation of the provisions of the Public Procurement Act 2007, adding that Oyetola did not call for bidding as mandatorily required under the PPA, let alone allowing competition which would have afforded the state the best qualified contractors to handle the projects. Olajengbesi noted in the petition that the beneficiaries of the contract allegedly included businesses with no construction experience, such as food vendors, salon operators, supermarket owners, and web designers. Addressing newsmen in Abuja on Sunday, Osun APC Media Director, Kola Olabisi, described the petition as a ruse by the governor, who he claimed has been seeking avenues to get even with the APC leaders in the state over his failure to retain his grip on the state local governments. Olabisi also slammed Adeleke and his legal team for trying ‘so hard’ to rubbish the image of his predecessor in the media. He said, “When the attempt to force their ways to the local government council offices failed, they are now resorting to another crude tactics of attempting to tarnish the image of the former governor of the state, Alhaji Adegboyega Oyetola, a man of candour and probity who served the state honourably. “In the recent propaganda escalated to the country’s anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, chronicling falsehood to soil the name of Oyetola and those who worked in his government, the Adeleke government said the $20m Save-One-Million Lives Programme was stolen and was not used for the purpose it was meant for.” According to the APC chieftain, the fund received by Oyetola’s government was comprehensively monitored by the donor. Midway through his speech, the APC media director brought some documents detailing what he said was where the funds were expended. He stated, “We will share with you details of how the Oyetola government enhanced and scaled up health in Osun through the grant. We invite the media and the public to peruse the document, containing pictures of facilities and programmes executed to verify our claims. “Not only was the fund used to improve health in the state, but the contract awards followed the relevant procurement laws of the state. We make bold to state that no commissioner, adviser or appointee of ex-Governor Oyetola was awarded contracts while serving in government. “We challenge the state government, which is now on a witch-hunting mission, to publish names of contractors and date of contract awards to substantiate their evil narrative. Unlike Oyetola who uploaded 110 contract and procurement details on the government portal in three years, the current government has only published seven contract details in two years, raising eyebrows about his commitment to accountability and transparency.” Punch

I’ve Resumed As Lagos Assembly Speaker, Says Obasa

  The ousted Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has stated that he has resumed his position as the parliament’s leader. Obasa stated this on Thursday after returning to the assembly complex with police and State Security Service details for the first time since he was removed on January 13. “I’ve resumed, and I remain the Speaker of the Assembly,” Obasa told reporters on the premises of the House. Asked whether he has been reinstated as speaker, Obasa said, “I’ve never been removed. Impeachment or removal is democratic and constitutional but in doing that, you must follow the due process. I am not against that. If I do that, then I am not democratic.” PUNCH Online reports that Obasa, alongside security officials, had entered the Speaker’s Office around 12 noon on Thursday. The development followed the withdrawal of the security aides of the Speaker, Mojisola Meranda. The assembly has been embroiled in a leadership crisis since Obasa’s removal as speaker and the subsequent election of Meranda. Obasa was accused by over 90 per cent of the lawmakers of poor leadership style, perpetual lateness to legislative functions and plenary, high-handedness and disregard for colleague lawmakers and the executive, especially the governor, abuse of office and privileges, intimidation and oppression of members among others. In an attempt to resolve the crisis, some All Progressives Congress bigwigs, notably former governors of Osun, Ogun and Lagos states, Chief Bisi Akande, Segun Osoba, and Akinwunmi Ambode, respectively, among others, on the directive of President Bola Tinubu, had a series of meetings last weekend with political stakeholders in the state including members of the assembly. The PUNCH learnt at the end of the meetings that both Obasa and Meranda might be stepping aside for another lawmaker to lead the house. Osun Crisis: Adeleke Denies Changing LG Accounts Signatories

  The Osun State Government, on Wednesday, refuted claims that it was forcing career officers in local governments to change signatories to council accounts amid the ongoing tussle between the ruling Peoples Democratic Party and the opposition All Progressives Congress over local government control. The Chairman of the Allied Peoples Movement in Osun, Mr. Adewale Adebayo, had alleged that Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration was coercing Finance Directors and Heads of Local Administration to alter council account signatories. “We reliably gathered that Adeleke’s government has started taking 30 Local Government Area Finance Directors and Heads of Local Administration to an undisclosed location forcefully. This is unconnected to the contention over who controls the local government. “The HLAs and the Directors of Finance were taken to these locations to be pressured into changing signatories of council accounts to the newly elected officials. “These individuals have been reportedly held against their will, an act that undermines the principles of democracy and the rule of law. “Despite judicial pronouncements from the Court of Appeal upholding the October 15, 2022, council election, the state government continues to act in a manner that contradicts the spirit of the verdict,” Adebayo alleged. But responding swiftly, Osun State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, dismissed the allegations as “mere speculation.” “This is just an attempt to say something because the Commissioner for Local Government has confirmed that he never gave such a directive. They have made themselves look foolish in the eyes of the public, so they want to create a false narrative. “We have never changed any local government account signatories. They should remain troubled. APM is just crying more than the bereaved,” Alimi stated. Meanwhile, the APC in Osun has urged local government workers to return to their duty posts, insisting that they should remain neutral in the political tussle over council control. Jamiu Olawumi, a former Special Adviser on Education under ex-Governor Adegboyega Oyetola, who has been speaking for the party, emphasised that the reinstated local government chairmen had already given workers a 72-hour ultimatum to resume work. The Osun chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress, however, rejected the ultimatum, with Chairman Christopher Arapasopo stating that workers would only return when their security was guaranteed. Olawumi, however, insisted that workers were expected at their duty posts from Thursday, adding that chairmen and councillors were already running the councils without them. “It is quite unfortunate that they (workers) are becoming partisan. They need to understand that they are not employed by the state government but by individual local governments. That is why they have Heads of Local Government Administration. “We encourage them to eschew partisanship and focus on their work. The ultimatum lapses today (Wednesday), and we expect them to resume tomorrow (Thursday). If they don’t, we will continue persuading them to see reasons why they must not be partisan. We are running, and we are running,” Olawumi said. Efforts to reach NLC Chairman, Arapasopo for comment were unsuccessful, as calls to his phone did not go through, and he had yet to respond to text messages as of press time. Amid the crisis, an Osun-based civil society group, “The Osun Masterminds,” has called on all parties to return to court to resolve the dispute. Speaking in Osogbo, the Executive Director of the group, Prof. Wasiu Oyedokun-Alli, urged an end to inflammatory remarks that could worsen tensions. *”All parties must immediately return to the relevant courts to clarify the subsisting judgments so that the current issues can be amicably resolved. “Once clarified, all parties must respect the decision of the courts and lay the matter to rest once and for all. “As we approach the 2026 Osun gubernatorial election, all parties must demonstrate their commitment to peace and security. If this crisis escalates into next year, it could destabilize our once peaceful Osun State. “Local government staff must remain non-partisan and adhere to the rule of law to avoid becoming political tools in the hands of any party,”Oyedokun-Alli stated.
