Former Lawmaker Dismisses Ogun Opposition as no Threat to Yayi

A lawyer and federal Lawmaker,Kayode Oladele, has expressed confidence that opposition parties, especially the Peoples Democratic Party and the African Democratic Congress, are unlikely to pose a serious challenge in Ogun State’s 2027 governorship election, pointing to weak leadership, declining party structures, and the increasing dominance of the ruling party. In a statement made available to journalists on Thursday, Oladele said the PDP weakened its own position by planning to re-present its 2023 governorship candidate, Ladi Adebutu, for the 2027 governorship race, arguing that the decision raises doubts about the competence and capacity required to govern a complex and economically strategic state. He said, “The issue goes beyond personal ambition and touches on fairness and sound political judgment. Without pre-empting, Adebutu’s emergence from the same Remo axis as the incumbent governor, Dapo Abiodun, would further complicate the PDP’s position on equity and balanced representation. “There is a growing resistance among stakeholders and voters to producing another governor from the Remo axis, so the prevailing mood favours a more inclusive distribution of power across the state’s senatorial districts.” He added that opposition parties are steadily losing relevance, pointing to ongoing defections of their members to the All Progressives Congress as evidence of weakening internal structures and declining confidence. “There is a clear shift in the political environment. Key figures and grassroots supporters from opposition parties are aligning with the APC because they recognise where the strength lies,” he said. Oladele maintained that the most decisive factor shaping the 2027 race is the rising popularity of the APC consensus candidate, Senator Olamilekan Adeola Yayi. He described Yayi’s emergence as the outcome of wide consultations and party cohesion, with growing acceptance across different segments of the state. “The momentum is evident. Across Ogun State, there is increasing support for Senator Adeola Yayi. His track record, political reach and grassroots connection have positioned him as the candidate to beat. “Yayi is like a movement that no opposition can withstand or stop. It is God’s agenda, a divine assignment whose time has come, and the good people of the state have equally aligned with this reality,” he said. Oladele stressed that governance in Ogun State demands more than ambition, noting that it requires proven leadership, strategic depth and the ability to manage a diverse population and a fast-growing economy. “The responsibility of leading Ogun State cannot be reduced to ambition. It requires capacity, experience and a clear understanding of the state’s development path,” he added. Reinforcing his position, Oladele described the APC as the dominant political force in the state with a strong institutional base and broad appeal among voters. He said the party’s unity and ability to manage internal interests continue to strengthen its electoral prospects. The former lawmaker concluded that with the APC’s cohesion, expanding support base and the perceived limitations of the opposition, the 2027 contest is already tilting in favour of the ruling party. “As things stand, the opposition lacks both the structure and the momentum to compete effectively. The APC remains firmly in control, and the people of Ogun State are aligning with a future they can trust,” Oladele said.

Tinubu Concerned Over Opposition’s Lack Of Unity—Akpabio

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has stated that President Bola Tinubu, is interested in a vibrant opposition, urging the main opposition People’s Democratic Party, and the Labour Party, to put their houses in order. Akpabio made the statement during the inauguration of Arterial Road N20 Interchange Bridges. Referencing the recent crisis in the PDP regarding the position of the National Secretary of the party, and the recent defection of Senator Neda Imasuen, Senate Committee Chairman on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions, from the Labour Party to the ruling All Progressives Congress, the Senate President said the President was saddened to see the opposition in disarray. “However you people got yourself into this confusion, try and get yourself out of it very quickly. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR is interested in seeing a vibrant opposition. As a true democrat, we would like to see a very vibrant opposition in the country. It saddens him when he sees the way the opposition in Nigeria is in disarray. “Just before I came here to represent him (Tinubu), I received and read a letter from the Labour Party. So it’s not only PDP that is in disarray. Even the Labour Party is cracked. And people who are strong members of the Labour Party are angling to run Nigeria when they cannot put a small political party like that in order,” he said. Akpabio also stated that he wasn’t tired of receiving defectors to the APC, adding that the party’s doors were open. “Senator Neda Imasuen just decamped this afternoon from the Labour Party and moved from the left-hand side of the Senate to the right-hand side. So that took my time, Honourable Minister, I had to do that ritual. “I’m not tired. I’m happy to receive them because our doors are open in the All Progressive Congress. So congratulations to Imasuen, who has decided to leave the fractured Labour Party to join the APC,” Akpabio stated. In his address, the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, faulted the PDP for waiting on directives from the Independent National Electoral Commission before implementing a Supreme Court judgment that affirmed Samuel Anyanwu as National Secretary. Addressing the Acting National Chairman of the PDP, Umar Damagum, Wike argued that the issue of reinstating Anyanwu did not arise, noting that the Secretary was not an appointee of the Chairman, and has been working since his election. “I heard it when the acting National Chairman of PDP was directing the National Secretary to resume. The National Secretary is not your appointee. The National Secretary has been doing his work. So, you can’t call him to resume. “The National Secretary has been working and will continue to work. He doesn’t require anybody to direct him to resume work. “If it’s because of your ignorance of the law, too bad. The law does not recognize ignorance. That you’re ignorant of the law is not an excuse. I feel so bad when people can now move to INEC, for INEC to direct them to obey Supreme Court judgment, it’s most unfortunate,” he said. The FCT Minister rebuked Damagum, saying he won’t join those sabotaging themselves. He urged Damagum to seek guidance instead of acting out of ego or relying solely on allocations, adding that money isn’t the solution to every problem. “Continue to shoot yourself. I will not be a party of those who will shoot themselves. When you don’t know something, ask the right person. Not because of ego, not because of oh, I’m receiving monthly allocation. Money does not solve all the problems. “There’s nothing you can do about it. If you want to learn, come and meet us, we will teach you how to go about it,” Wike said.

Opposition Woos Obasa As Removal Divides Lagos APC

The removal of a former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has continued to deepen division within the All Progressives Congress in the state. This was as opposition parties declared readiness to welcome the embattled lawmaker should he consider leaving the ruling party. Since Obasa’s impeachment on January 13, 2025, by a majority of lawmakers over alleged misconduct and financial misappropriation, his removal has sparked conflicting reactions among members of the Governance Advisory Council, the highest decision-making body of the APC in Lagos. The division became evident when two GAC members, Senator Anthony Adefuye and Chief Muraina Taiwo, who opposed Obasa’s removal, were criticised by another member of the group, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, who dismissed their comments as “childish and inconsequential.” In an interview with Sunday PUNCH, Adefuye had criticised the process that led to Obasa’s removal, while Taiwo, in a brief WhatsApp message, stated, “The lawmakers’ action is illegal. It shows total disregard and clear disrespect for leadership. The GAC is split over the matter, but we will all defer to our leader, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to resolve the crisis.” However, Obanikoro rebuked both men, urging party leaders to refrain from making hasty statements on the issue. The Lagos State House of Assembly has said it expects Obasa to return to the House before determining the next course of action, including a possible probe. However, as of the time of filing this report, it was unclear whether the former Speaker had appeared before the House, as the Assembly’s spokesperson, Olukayode Ogundipe, did not respond to calls on Friday. Meanwhile, opposition parties in the state told our correspondent on Friday that they were open to accommodating the embattled former Speaker should he decide to exit the ruling party amid the ongoing crisis. The Vice Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state, Benedict Tai, said the party would implement appropriate checks if Obasa eventually joined them. “If we accept him into the party, we will put checks and balances in place because no one can just come in and demand a position. The person must have spent years in the party. We need to be sure he isn’t coming to disrupt the party, as some have done in the past,” he stated. He noted that the PDP welcomed the crisis within the APC and intended to capitalise on it to regain lost ground in the state. “If disunity is an obstacle to their party, then we hope it worsens for them. They are our main challenge. The current situation in Lagos is favourable for the PDP, provided we learn from our mistakes and take advantage of their shortcomings,” Tai added. Similarly, the Labour Party in Lagos expressed its willingness to welcome Obasa should he consider leaving the APC ahead of the 2027 governorship election. The Chairman of the party, Pastor Dayo Ekong, said the LP had no problem integrating Obasa into its ranks as long as his interests aligned with the party’s vision and principles. “If the impeached Speaker chooses to join the Labour Party, he will be welcomed because our party is open to everyone. As a party driven by the right ideals, we don’t want to interfere in APC affairs. However, if Obasa decides to join us, he will be accepted, provided his interests align with what the LP stands for,” Ekong stated. When asked whether Obasa might receive preferential treatment due to his political status and rumoured governorship ambition, Ekong said, “There are no automatic rights anywhere. People were at the party before he came in. What we will do is allow everyone to go through the primaries and test their popularity. It’s not about granting an automatic ticket to anyone. “Don’t forget that the 2023 LP governorship candidate is still in the party. But when we get to that bridge, we will cross it.”
