Amotekun Arrests 28 for Robbery, Kidnapping in Ondo

The Ondo State Security Network Agency, also known as Amotekun Corps, on Tuesday paraded no fewer than 28 suspected criminals arrested in the state. The corps said the suspects were arrested across the 18 local government areas of the state, in collaboration with other security agencies and the local vigilante. Parading the suspects at the headquarters of the command in Akure, the state capital, the commander of the corps, Adetunji Adeleye, said they had allegedly been terrorising the state in recent times. According to Adeleye, the suspects were allegedly involved in various crimes such as kidnapping, theft, stealing, cattle rustling, and vandalism, among others. He said, “Today, I am parading a total of 28 suspects and I want to let you know that the criminal world is evolving. “Therefore, Ondo State Security Network Agency Amotekun always strives to be ahead of them. “We have now gone beyond arresting criminals and suspects alone. As we talk now, we are after their godfathers and backbones, and the reason is simple. So we are saying that until we uproot them, we won’t have total peace. “We need the socio-economic growth of Ondo State to continue to increase. By the intervention of Amotekun Corp, the IGR of Ondo State in 2023 increased by over 500 per cent and we don’t want to relent. Hence, our fight is not against the criminals alone, but against their sponsors. “The people we are parading today, there is a section of them that steal, kill, murder riders and dispossess them of their motorcycles. They have already made market receivers, who, within minutes, dismantle and sell to those who will later assemble and sell. “We’ve gone after them and we’ve arrested the suspect, we’ve arrested the sponsor, we’ve arrested all the culprits. The chain of criminality had to be broken and uprooted, and that is the directive of His Excellency, the Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, to create an enabling environment for investors to bombard Ondo State. “So today, four suspected kidnappers were arrested in the Elegbeka area. They are Kwangi, Kwanji, Kana, Kana, Sam, and Daniel, ages ranging between 18 and 27. “On rape and fraud, we have Abiola, aged 24. We have equally on defilement, rape, and sexual assault, one Ogungbemi. And we have Tosin on assault. To the Fulani communities, their cattle were rustled and taken away from the Igbara Oke axis. We went after the Fulani that stole the cattle, retrieved the cattle, arrested the rustlers, who are Abubakar Musa and Umar Mohammed, aged 20 and returned the cows to the Fulani men.” The Amotekun boss commended the other security agencies in the state for collaborating with it in the fight against crime and criminality. He stated, “We are here today to let you know that the security architecture of Ondo State is firm, and the best criminals can do is to run away from this state. “The joint patrol team in some parts of the state is still ongoing. And I can tell you this for free that we have dominated the forest. It is no longer a safe place for criminals to thrive.” In July, the corps arrested seven suspects for various offences, including kidnapping and the theft of electronics in the state. Adeleye said the corps recovered items worth N300 million during recent operations.

Ondo Nurses Declare Seven-Day Warning Strike, Halt Patient Care

The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, Federal Medical Centre, Owo chapter, has declared that it will not attend to any patient during its ongoing seven-day warning strike, regardless of the severity of cases. Mr. Coker Oluwasegun, secretary of the association, made this known on Thursday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, accusing the Federal Government of neglecting the welfare of nurses. “It is total compliance—no leeway whatsoever,” he said. “The Federal Government has unfairly treated nurses over the years, and this is the time for us to take the bull by the horns. “This action is not against the management of FMC Owo, as we have already informed the Medical Director and his team.” Oluwasegun lamented poor remuneration and working conditions, noting that the uniform allowance has remained N20,000 per year for over two decades. “In all other allowances, nurses receive the least, despite being the backbone of the health sector. There’s a lack of equipment in most hospitals, making patients wrongly assume we are responsible for poor outcomes. The working conditions are deplorable,” he added. He cited a string of unfulfilled promises by the Federal Government and reiterated that the warning strike would last seven days. “If our 12-point demands are not met, we will resume after the warning strike and issue a 21-day ultimatum, after which an indefinite strike will commence,” Oluwasegun stated. OndoDecides2024 :Gunshot Erupts in Ondo, Edo Border Community Amid Election

There was reported firing of gunshots by some unknown persons at Ofosun Village, an Ondo community at the boundary with Edo State. The incident, it was learnt, caused panic, forcing people to stay indoors to avoid being hit by stray bullets. A source in the village, identified simply as Dauda, who spoke to our correspondent on the phone said, “We don’t know who they are but they were firing gunshots into the air in some parts of the village since early morning. Ofosun is an Ondo village close to Benin in Edo State. No casualty, but people in the village are staying indoors.” It was not immediately clear what could have led to the incident, but the Deputy Governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Festus Akingbaso, while commending voters’ turnout, expressed concerns over the alleged infiltration of some villages under the Idanre Local Government Area by hoodlums. Akingbaso, who spoke shortly after casting his vote at Imikan Ward 02, Unit 008, Idanre, commended INEC for the timely arrival of voting materials but alleged, “Information reaching me is that majority of the villages are filled with thugs allegedly brought in by the APC. At the moment, all the villages are occupied with thugs. Villages like Ofosun, Omifunfun and Allah are occupied. “There is a place called Igbepo where suspected thugs are in their numbers in Idanre Local Government Area. An incident happened in Ofosun where suspected thugs broke into the house of a party member to prevent him from voting. We were informed that there are plans not to allow people in the villages to vote. “I have reported the matter to the DPO and DSS. To my expectation, the security agencies have not been able to do anything.” Reacting to the allegation, the Ondo APC spokesperson, Mr Steve Otaloro, absolved his party of involving in any crime and demanded a thorough investigation into the allegations. He said, “I am in the situation room of APC right now. Let me say first some foremost, the person you mentioned is the deputy governorship candidate of Agboola Ajayi of the PDP. And if you recall PDP had a press conference two days ago alleging the kind of violence that happened in that place was by APC. “All the places he mentioned, was he on the ground in all those places? He was supposed to be at his polling unit. Even if he was called, he should have done proper diligence to be on the ground. They told us there was nothing like that. Voting is going on orderly, if they have any issue with that, they just want to create an issue out of nothing. “As I speak, no member of our political party is going out to vote as a member, everybody has become electorate. Whatever violence that is happening, they should investigate it properly, but I can assure you it is not from our members. How will you infiltrate all those local areas, these are routes and farm settlements? Why will our members infiltrate such places? That is not true. “More often than not, maybe their plans were burst, and that was why he is coming up with this allegation. And since morning, this election has started peacefully, they should allow it to end peacefully. We as a political party, are committed to peace, and we have told our people to allow peace to reign in all their activities in the course of this election.” When contacted, the Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, Funmi Odunlami, said she was in transit. She also said the incident had not been reported to her. Punch

Fuel Scarcity Crisis Claims Life of Local Government Chairman in Nigeria

The fuel scarcity crisis in Nigeria has resulted in the tragic death of Oluwatuyi Olasoji, chairman of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) for Akure South Local Government. Olasoji collapsed while waiting to purchase fuel at a filling station in Akure, Ondo State, last week. Despite being rushed to the Federal Medical Center in Owo for emergency surgery, he succumbed to his condition on Monday, September 9. The fuel shortage has led to severe nationwide disruptions, with long queues at petrol stations, skyrocketing transport fares, and worsening traffic conditions leaving many commuters stranded. The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has acknowledged the crisis, attributing it to market deregulation and fluctuating exchange rates. They have promised improvements as the Dangote Refinery is expected to begin fuel lifting in mid-September.
