Kogi LG APC Chairman Dies After Reconciliation Meeting

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Kogi State, Aliyu Momoh Ezzu, has confirmed the death of the party’s Ijumu Local Government Area chairman, Oyewole Mayowa Solomon, shortly after a reconciliation meeting in the area. Ezzu confirmed Solomon’s death in a condolence message on Friday, describing the late party chairman as a committed party member whose contributions to the growth and unity of the APC in Ijumu Local Government Area would not be forgotten. Solomon reportedly slumped during a party reconciliation meeting held in Iyara, the headquarters of Ijumu LGA, on Friday. His death was subsequently confirmed by the Kogi APC chairman, who expressed deep sorrow over the loss and commiserated with Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, the people of Ijumu Local Government Area, the deceased’s family, friends and members of the APC. “His sudden death has sent shock and sadness across the APC family in Ijumu Local Government and Kogi State,” the statement issued on behalf of Ezzu read. The Kogi APC chairman described Solomon as a committed party leader who contributed to the growth and unity of the party in the local government. He prayed to God to grant the deceased’s family and the entire APC family the strength to bear the loss. Ezzu also urged party members and supporters to remain calm and united during the period of mourning. The circumstances surrounding Solomon’s death were earlier reported by AIT Online, which said the APC chairman slumped while a reconciliation meeting was ongoing at the Iyara Town Hall. According to the report, confusion and panic followed his sudden collapse among political leaders and delegates present at the meeting. Solomon was reportedly rushed to a medical facility in neighbouring Kabba, where he was pronounced dead. The exact cause of his death has yet to be officially disclosed. The reconciliation meeting was said to have been convened to harmonise political interests, reconcile factions, resolve internal disagreements and foster unity among APC stakeholders in Ijumu ahead of future political activities. According to AIT Online, the initiative was convened by a former chairman of Ijumu Local Government Area, Funsho Olumoko, following a mandate from the Ijumu Consultative Forum. The reconciliation effort reportedly followed an earlier meeting in Iyara where APC stakeholders in the local government endorsed President Bola Tinubu and Governor Ododo for their second terms. However, a previous session of the meeting was reportedly marred by disagreements over local government leadership, leading to a walkout by Solomon and some government officials. Friday’s meeting was therefore said to have been convened to bridge the divisions and bring together selected political leaders, local government and ward executives, women and youth leaders, as well as government appointees from the 15 wards of Ijumu Local Government Area. Meanwhile, the APC executives in Ijumu LGA have also mourned the late party chairman. In a condolence message signed by the party’s General Secretary, Joshua Monday Oshatoba, the executives described Solomon’s death as sudden, painful and devastating. “The news of his passing has left us devastated and speechless. He was a committed party leader who served with dedication, courage, and a strong sense of responsibility,” the message read. The local party executives said his death was a great loss not only to his immediate family but also to the APC, Ijumu Local Government and the entire Ijumu community.

Tony Elumelu to Step Down as UBA Chairman, Successor Named

United Bank for Africa Plc (UBA) has announced that its Group Chairman, Tony Elumelu, will retire from the bank’s Board of Directors effective August 21, 2026, marking the end of his tenure as chairman. “Under his chairmanship, UBA deepened its pan-African expansion strategy and now operates in 20 African countries, alongside operations in four global financial centres. “The bank currently serves more than 50 million customers across its network. His retirement comes as Nigerian banks continue to align with the CBN’s corporate governance guidelines, which impose a maximum tenure of 12 years for non-executive directors to strengthen board independence and governance standards.” Reacting, Elumelu on his Facebook acknowledged his years of service as the chairman of an “African institution that can compete globally, while being deeply committed to our continent’s development.” In the post titled, “Celebrating an African Institution: My Farewell from UBA,” he said, “I have never been able to look at Africa and see only borders. Where many see fifty-four separate markets, I saw one continent, one destiny — waiting to be transformed, waiting to be believed in. “Africa does not have a shortage of brilliant women and men. Africa suffers a shortage of institutions that outlast brilliant women and men. Today is a day of huge excitement – of potential delivered and continued opportunity. Leadership is not about holding onto a position, but knowing when an institution is ready for the next chapter. “I conclude my tenure as Chairman of the Group Board of United Bank for Africa (UBA) on August 21, 2026, after twelve years and decades of association with this extraordinary institution, with profound gratitude, immense pride, and most importantly – great optimism for the future.” He maintained that his objective of building the bank was to connect Africa to itself and the world and to build something that would outlive individuals. Elumelu continued, “Today, that vision is reality. UBA Group serves over 50 million customers, operates across 20 African countries and four continents, supports trade and investment, and demonstrates that an African institution can compete globally, while being deeply committed to our continent’s development. “This success belongs to generations of dedicated colleagues, exceptional management, visionary directors, loyal customers, supportive regulators, committed shareholders, and partners who believed in our shared purpose.” He further welcomed his successor, Nnorom, to lead the bank, stressing that he believed in his experience, leadership, and deep understanding of the bank, while urging shareholders, customers, partners, and the entire UBA family to extend to him the same trust and support they have entrusted him with over the years. The bank disclosed this on Monday during its board meeting, asserting that the process was necessary after the completion of the maximum 12-year tenure for non-executive directors prescribed by the Central Bank of Nigeria. The financial institution also named a current non-executive director on the board, Emmanuel Nnorom, as its incoming group chairman, whose appointment will take effect on the same day Elumelu retires. In a statement released shortly after the meeting, the bank said, “The Board places on record its profound appreciation to Elumelu for his visionary leadership and exceptional contribution to the strategic vision and institutional strength of the UBA Group.

Osun NURTW chairman Denies Alleged Plot Against Adeleke’s son, Requests Police Protection

The acting chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers in Osun State, Kazeem Oyewale, has dismissed claims that he plotted to assassinate Governor Ademola Adeleke’s son, Adebayo Adeleke, also known as B-Red. In a recent statement released by the Osun State Commissioner for Information, Kolapo Alimi, the government claimed that B-Red escaped an assassination attempt and linked the incident to hoodlums allegedly led by Oyewale, also known as Asiri Eniba. Alimi further said the incident happened in the Oke-Fia area, a few metres from the Osun Government House. But reacting to the allegations during an interview with journalists in Osogbo on Monday, Oyewale, who threatened to approach the court for redress, accused the state government of making false allegations against him. Oyewale, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Osun State, however, called on President Bola Tinubu and the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to protect him and his followers from further harassment by government officials. He said, “I want to call the attention of President Bola Tinubu, the IGP and Nigerians. They should come to my aid because the governor and Kolapo Alimi (Commissioner for Information) have called for my arrest over untrue allegations, and they are even threatening me. “Those after me killed my younger brother in November 2022, and they have not released the corpse to us till today. This is another election cycle in Osun State. “They have been trailing me and want to kill me. They are lying against me, making claims that they cannot substantiate, among which is the allegation that I want to kill the governor’s son. “They killed my younger brother and now they are alleging that I am behind the destruction of billboards. It does not sound logical. I don’t know anything about these allegations. This is the style they adopted in 2022. I am a member of the APC. What is my business with Accord? Any time something goes wrong within their party, they will blame me for it.” He urged his “followers and supporters not to entertain fear because nothing will happen to them. They used the style of indiscriminate arrest of NURTW members in 2022, but it can’t happen again. That is why they have embarked on a campaign of calumny against my personality.”

In a letter dated July 21, 2025, and addressed to the President, Babangida expressed profound appreciation for the honour bestowed on him but stated that personal and professional considerations would not allow him to serve the role effectively. “It is a true privilege to be thought worthy of such a strategic role in advancing the nation’s agricultural and economic development,” he wrote. “After careful reflection and consultation, I have decided, with utmost respect, to decline the appointment.” The letter, which was signed and made public, emphasized Babangida’s continued support for the administration of President Tinubu and his commitment to contributing to national development through other avenues. “I remain fully committed to the vision of a prosperous and self-sufficient Nigeria under your leadership. I continue to hold your administration in the highest regard and stand ready to support national development in other ways where my expertise may be of service,” he added. The decision is seen by many observers as a significant gesture of personal principle, especially given the strategic importance of the Bank of Agriculture in the current administration’s economic diversification agenda. As of the time of filing this report, the presidency has not issued a formal reaction to the declined appointment.

PDP Crisis: Yayari Mohammed Takes Over As Acting National Chairman

In his inaugural address to party members made available to the media in Abuja on Sunday, Mohammed expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support he has received, acknowledging the urgent need for introspection within the party. Mohammed’s appointment is the latest in the crisis besetting the main opposition coming at a crucial time when the PDP is seeking to revitalize its structure and restore confidence among its members, particularly the youth. The factional chairman outlined his commitment to adhering strictly to the party’s constitution and ensuring fair treatment for all members, regardless of their position. Fuel Scarcity Crisis Claims Life of Local Government Chairman in Nigeria

The fuel scarcity crisis in Nigeria has resulted in the tragic death of Oluwatuyi Olasoji, chairman of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) for Akure South Local Government. Olasoji collapsed while waiting to purchase fuel at a filling station in Akure, Ondo State, last week. Despite being rushed to the Federal Medical Center in Owo for emergency surgery, he succumbed to his condition on Monday, September 9. The fuel shortage has led to severe nationwide disruptions, with long queues at petrol stations, skyrocketing transport fares, and worsening traffic conditions leaving many commuters stranded. The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has acknowledged the crisis, attributing it to market deregulation and fluctuating exchange rates. They have promised improvements as the Dangote Refinery is expected to begin fuel lifting in mid-September.
