Akpabio Congratulates Okpebholo On Supreme Court Victory

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has congratulated Governor Monday Okpebholo on his confirmation as the duly elected candidate in the September 2024 gubernatorial election in Edo. Akpabio, in a congratulatory message personally signed by him on Friday in Abuja, described the Supreme Court verdict as the triumph of democracy and the will of the people. Akpabio said, “What the apex court in the land has done is to affirm the will and wishes of the overwhelming majority of the people of Edo State. It shows that the election was transparent, free and fair. “The declaration by the Supreme Court in favour of Sen. Okpebholo against Mr Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party has proven that elections are won at the ballot and by people who have identified with the grassroots.” The Senate President added that the ruling confirmed Okpebholo’s grassroots popularity and the growing acceptance of the All Progressives Congress in Edo State. He added, “This milestone affirms Okpebholo’s mandate and paves the way for him to continue delivering exceptional service to the good people of Edo. “He has done well in the past seven months, and I believe he will do excellently well in his four-year tenure. “My distinguished brother, His Excellency Senator Monday Okpebholo, on behalf of my family and constituents, the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I extend my warmest congratulations to you and the wonderful people of Edo on this landmark victory at the Supreme Court.” He assured the governor of the Senate’s support and collaboration in promoting the state’s development. “Congratulations once again, Gov Okpebholo. I look forward to a robust working relationship with you,” the Senate President said. NAN reports that in a unanimous decision by a five-member panel led by Justice Mohammed Garba, the apex court dismissed as lacking in merit an appeal the candidate of Ighodalo filed to nullify the outcome of the governorship election. The apex court held that it found no reason to set aside the concurrent judgments of both the Court of Appeal and the Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, which returned Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress, APC, as the valid winner of the gubernatorial contest. It held that the Appellant failed to adduce credible and admissible evidence to substantiate his claim that the election was marred by irregularities that included over-voting and substantial non-compliance with provisions of the Electoral Act. Likewise, it held that the Appellant failed to call relevant witnesses to demonstrate some of the evidence he tendered in support of his case, especially the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System machines. It held that some of the proof of evidence, which were tendered from the Bar, were merely dumped on the tribunal without establishing alleged non-compliance in 432 out of a total of 4,519 polling units in the state. How Makinde’s Policies Transformed Oyo’s Education Sector – Commissioner•••Says Govt’ll Move Against Phone Use, Malpractices In Secondary Schools

How Makinde’s Policies Transformed Oyo’s Education Sector – Commissioner•••Says Govt’ll Move Against Phone Use, Malpractices In Secondary Schools

IBADAN – Oyo State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Hon. Segun Olayiwola, has said that the positive turnaround witnessed by the education sector in the state is as a result of Governor ‘Seyi Makinde visionary and insightful leadership. He noted that the administration has implemented many policies towards transforming the sector, which prior to Governor Makinde’s assumption of office in 2019, had become deplorable, with education quality at its lowest ebb. Olayiwola, who spoke at the Omituntun 2.0 Inter-Ministerial Briefing on Thursday, said the government’s policies on budgetary allocation, reducing the gap in education infrastructure, reducing the number of out-of-school children and increasing the workforce in the education sector, among others, have had a positive impact on the quality of education in the state. He stated that the direct outcomes of the policy actions include, among other things, the growing improvement in the quality and standard of education, reduction in education infrastructure deficit, increased education enrolment and an overall progress in the all-important sector. The Commissioner maintained that as a result of the efforts of the government, which has demonstrated the political will to improve education, the sector has attracted interventions from development partners and Old Students Associations, which are helping greatly in meeting education needs across the state. Speaking on efforts to further standardise the education sector, Olayiwola said that the state would no longer take the issue of hooliganism lightly across its public schools, saying that the state is collaborating with the police to ensure that peace and order are maintained across schools. He warned parents and wards to be wary of all activities that could reduce the quality of the education sector, noting that the state would now fully enforce the laws against use of mobile phones by public school students and also attack examination malpractices squarely. According to Olayiwola, Governor Makinde’s actions have also had far-reaching effects on the education family, which is the largest Ministry in the state, as it has 12 full departments headed by Level 17 Officers as directors, 22 Permanent Secretaries, comprising 10 Tutors-General manning the 10 educational zones and 10 Inspectors-General manning the 10 educational zones, among others. He added that the Ministry also has seven agencies including SUBEB and TESCOM; 10 tertiary institutions, including the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Senator Abiola Ajimobi Technical University, Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, three polytechnics in Ibadan, Eruwa and Saki, a School of Agriculture in Igbo-Ora and a School of Health Technology. The Commissioner stated that as a result of Governor Makinde’s commitment to improving education, which led to the recruitment of thousands of teachers in his first and second term of office, the state has additional 15,000 teaching and non-teaching staff, who are manning 646 secondary schools and 2,506 primary schools. Olayiwola noted that the Ministry has also been in charge of overseeing private schools, performing oversight functions over them. He said: “By the time this administration came into being in 2019, the education sector in the state was in a bad shape. The governor had to highlight the problems we met on the ground. “One of the challenges then was that there was a high percentage of out-of-school children. We had a high percentage of out-of-school children, poor performances in WAEC, NECO, GCE, and JAMB and all that. “We also had one and a half university; the Technical University and half of LAUTECH due to the joint ownership with Osun State. “Also, subventions to tertiary institutions were not paid. There was an agreed subvention to be paid to these higher institutions, but it was not paid for years, and so, there were frequent strike actions in our tertiary institutions. “We also had the challenge of inadequate facilities and infrastructure in the basic and secondary schools. “Non-payment of counterpart funding for intervention projects was also another challenge. We lost opportunities of bringing in counterpart funds from outside the country because of non-payment of our own share at that time. This was because when they come with that duty, the state is expected to pay either 10 per cent of the cost of the infrastructure or 20 per cent, but to pay 10 per cent or 20 per cent was a problem to the former administration. “Schools were also understaffed. “But, because of the innovation that Governor Makinde brought into fixing the challenges that faced the education sector and because of his ingenuity, all these challenges have been surmounted. “Upon his assumption of office, children who dropped out of schools rejoined and the major evidence of this is that between 2023 and now, the number of public primary schools has risen from 2,449 to 2,506, while the number of public secondary schools, which was 573 in 2023, has risen to 696, signifying a significant improvement in the number of schools. “Up till now, people are still approaching us for approval for the establishment of more public schools. With the support of a development partner, which provided a counterpart fund, we have reduced the number of out-of-school children drastically.” In the area of reducing the infrastructure deficit in the education sector, the Commissioner maintained that the state government has built additional model schools and classrooms, pointing out how the state recently renovated and equipped 105 public schools, while work is ongoing on another set of schools. He added that the state has also succeeded in improving access for special needs students, orphans and vulnerable children. Another area where Olayiwola noted that the state government succeeded in improving the educator sector was in terms of recruitment. He maintained that the governor’s decision to recruit more teachers through a transparent recruitment process has had a positive effect on education, saying: “The recruitment of teachers has also had a positive result on education in the state. With the 15,000 teachers that we recently employed, we surpassed one of the UNESCO education standards of one teacher to 30 students. By our standard, after employing 15,000 teachers, what we have on ground now is one teacher to … Read more

Messi Brace Lifts Inter Miami To 2-1 MLS Win Over New England

Lionel Messi scored twice in the first half of Inter Miami’s 2-1 victory over the New England Revolution on Wednesday, continuing a run of form unprecedented in Major League Soccer. The 38-year-old Argentine star has scored two goals in each of his last four MLS games to become the first MLS player to score multiple goals in four straight games. He launched the streak in late May with two goals in a 4-2 win over Montreal, followed by two in a 5-1 victory over Columbus. Miami then paused their MLS campaign to compete in the Club World Cup — where Messi scored one goal in four matches and Miami were eliminated in the round of 16 by Paris Saint-Germain. Javier Mascherano’s team returned to MLS action on Saturday with a 4-1 victory at Montreal — also fueled by a brace from eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi. In all Messi has 14 goals in 15 MLS games, putting him two behind leading scorer Sam Surridge, who has appeared in six more games for Nashville than Messi has played this season. “Obviously, Leo is a special player,” Mascherano said. “For me he’s the best player that has played this sport in history. It’s unbelievable how he continues doing things that maybe many years ago we thought that we cannot see at this moment.” Messi put Miami up 1-0 in the 27th minute at Gillette Stadium, taking advantage of a Revolution miscue and firing a left-footed shot from the heart of the area. The Argentinian star doubled the score 11 minutes later, charging onto a long through ball from Sergio Busquets and curling a left-footed shot beyond the reach of Slovenian goalkeeper Aljaz Ivacic. “They have played for many years so just when they see each other they connect and they know what they think,” Mascherano said of the Busquets-Messi connection. “In the second goal, Busquets understands when and where Leo wants the ball. It’s fantastic for us.” Veteran goalkeeper Oscar Ustari also starred for Miami, coming up with six saves before Spaniard Carles Gil managed to put one by him, picking off Tadeo Allende in the 79th minute and rifling in a shot from outside the box. With the victory Miami climbed from sixth to fifth in the Eastern Conference standings. On 35 points, they are seven points behind leaders FC Cincinnati but with three fewer matches played after their Club World Cup break. Their jam-packed July schedule continues on Saturday against Nashville, one of three matches in the next 10 days. Mascherano said New England’s late goal meant he couldn’t afford to take Messi out. “We know that at some point we have to find the moment to rest him,” he said. AFP

Move To EPL Now Or Regret It, Oliseh Warns Osimhen

Former Super Eagles captain, Sunday Oliseh, has warned Victor Osimhen, urging the Napoli striker to make a swift move to the English Premier League or risk living with regret over a missed opportunity, PUNCH Sports Extra reports. The 1996 Olympic gold medallist took to social media on Wednesday to share his thoughts on the Nigerian forward’s transfer situation, amid ongoing uncertainty over his next destination. “Victor Osimhen is at a very delicate crossroad. “He needs to find his way to the Premier League in a hurry or he risks so much regret! Man. United and Arsenal need this player if only…..” Oliseh wrote on his X handle. Oliseh’s comments come at a time when Osimhen’s expected big-money move to the Premier League appears increasingly unlikely, despite his impressive goal-scoring record and reduced release clause. Napoli have reportedly lowered their asking price for the 26-year-old to €75m, but Premier League clubs are yet to make serious advances. Manchester United, long linked with the striker, are instead pursuing Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, while Arsenal’s interest has cooled amid other priorities. Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio reported this week that Galatasaray have now emerged as front-runners for Osimhen’s signature, having tabled a formal offer and agreed personal terms with the player. The Turkish giants are locked in negotiations with Napoli, although the Serie A side are holding out for a full one-time payment of the €75m clause. Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal are also reportedly monitoring the situation and have shown willingness to meet the financial demands, but Osimhen is said to favour staying in Europe. Fabrizio Romano, in a YouTube update, revealed that Manchester United’s chances of signing Osimhen were slim from the outset due to the player’s uncompromising wage demands and his satisfaction with life in Istanbul following a previous loan spell. Oyo College Of Nursing Partners NGO To Tackle Sexual Harassment

The Oyo State College of Nursing and Midwifery, Eleyele, Ibadan and the Gender Mobile Initiative (GMI) are set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to aggressively tackle cases of sexual harassment suffered by students at tertiary institutions across the nation. This was revealed by the Provost, Dr. Gbonjubola Owolabi after a meeting with representatives of the National Board for Technical Education, NBTE, and GMI at the College’s conference room on Tuesday. The meeting, which was witnessed by the management team of the institution, agreed to make a measurable impact in reducing or eradicating all forms of sexual harassment at the college. Speaking on behalf of the Provost, the Deputy-provost, Mrs. Iyabo Adeleke said the MoU aims to strengthen existing efforts to prevent sexual harassment, including through policy development, capacity building, and promoting awareness. “The initiative is critical to upholding the dignity and rights of our students and staff, and so we key into this policy,” she said. She said that the College under the watch of Dr. Owolabi had zero tolerance for sexual harassment, abuse of office, and other forms of corrupt practices. The Executive Secretary, National Board for Technical Education, NBTE, Prof. Idris Bugaje said the board, in collaboration with a non-governmental organisation, Gender mobile initiative, is committed to fostering safe, inclusive, gender-friendly, and harassment-free learning environments across all tertiary institutions, under NBTE’s purview. He said the policy is sequel to a stakeholder engagement on Sexual Harassment Prevention organised by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission. Represented by Mr. Bello Abdul-hakeem, the Executive Secretary, said the College must constitute an Independent Sexual Harassment Prohibition Committee or a gender-based violence response team to oversee the execution of the policy. The Executive Secretary also mandated the college to work with Gender Mobile Initiative and establish clear report and response mechanisms to address cases of sexual harassment effectively. Speaking on behalf of Gender Mobile Initiative, Ms. Omotunde Blessing said that the anti-sexual harassment policy was jointly designed by ICPC with the support of development partners. She said that the policy involved the use of Campus Pal APP, a discreet online reporting platform with multipurpose resources available for users. Ms. Omotunde said that the platform could be used by students to report cases of harassment for prompt and effective response by the college. She said the NGO will provide mini-grants to the institution to support the technical process of policy design and implementation of the policy. She said the rate of sexual harassment in tertiary education institutions was alarming. Omotunde said, “The situation of sexual harrasment on campuses requires drastic measures to combat. We need to join hands to restore sanity in our education institutions.”

The measure was to prevent any undue influence or intimidation during the election. “Police escorts, covered number plates, and the use of sirens at or in the vicinity of polling units and collation centres are prohibited,” he said. Jimoh said that only vehicles designated for essential services, such as ambulances, fire trucks, and patrol vehicles operated by security agencies in the ICCES, would be permitted to operate during the restriction period. The commissioner added, “All other vehicles, including those belonging to any quasi-security outfit and state security agencies, are barred from movement, as no state-owned security agency is authorised to participate in the election security operations, in line with the electoral act. “The movement restriction will not apply to essential services such as those on medical emergencies and other emergency responders and their workers, the duly accredited officials of the LASIEC and accredited election observers and media practitioners on election coverage accredited by LASIEC. “These categories of groups and individuals are permitted to carry out their lawful duties during the election period, provided they adhere to all the relevant guidelines and regulations in the Electoral Act.” He said that all the security agencies personnel and other stakeholders, including the media and election observers accredited by LASEIC for the election, would have and wear their identification tags certified by LASEIC throughout the period of the election. “No one without the identification tag will be allowed to take part in the election. Anyone arrested without an identification tag will be investigated and prosecuted in line with the Electoral Act,” he said. NAN
