JSS 2 Student Arrested For Stealing Cables Worth N300,000 From Lekan Salami Stadium

A 14-year-old student has been apprehended for allegedly stealing cables valued at N300,000 from the Lekan Salami Sports Complex in Ibadan, Oyo State. Sulaiman Abubakar, a Junior Secondary School (JSS 2) student at Eleyele High School, was taken into custody by security operatives after the theft was discovered. The Oyo State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Wasilat Adegoke, announced the arrest during her visit to the stadium to evaluate damage caused by the incident. Adegoke urged the state sports council staff to be vigilant and emphasized that security at the stadium is a shared responsibility among all stakeholders. She also pledged to enhance security measures at the complex to thwart future thefts. According to reports, Abubakar accessed the stadium during a training session of the Shooting Star Football Club, where he stayed overnight after security personnel locked the stadium entrances. During interrogation, he confessed to using a large stone to break pipes in order to reach and cut camera and lighting cables with the intention of selling them. The incident had a dramatic turn when Abubakar’s mother, a resident of the Sabo area in Ibadan, fainted upon seeing her son in handcuffs but was later revived by stadium staff. She indicated that she had recently punished Sulaiman for a prior offense. The case has now been transferred from the Stadium Police Post to the Mokola Police Station for further investigation.

Atiku Nickname Tinubu ‘T-Pain’ Over Fuel Price Crisis

On Wednesday, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) raised the pump price of fuel from N897 per liter to N1,030 in Abuja; from N855 to N998 in Lagos; N1, 070 in North-East; N1,025 in other South-West states; N1,045 in South-East and N1,075 in South-South. This triggered reactions among Nigerians who asked Tinubu to work towards reversing the increment. Comrade Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), had asked if increasing pump prices is what the Tinubu administration lives for. Weighing in on the conversation on Thursday, Atiku who was up against Tinubu in last year’s election, took to X. “The haphazard and disingenuous approach of the current administration to fuel subsidy management has been the reason we are in this current economic crisis in the country. As things stand, there will be no let up in the escalating inflation rate, which is drowning the material well-being of Nigerians. It is even more worrying that T-pain is undisturbed by the hardship in the country.” Although T-Pain is the stage name of an American artiste, social media critics have used it to describe Tinubu over the cost of living crisis. Upon his return from an overseas trip last month, Tinubu visited Maiduguri, Borno State capital, to condole with the people over the devastating flood. However, a social media user threw a jibe at the president. Tweeting via @SadiqGSadiq, the social media user wrote, “T-Pain has landed in Maiduguri with his new 150bn jet to promise the flood victims bags of rice.” Meanwhile, the Federal Government has said it should not be held responsible for the latest hike in petrol prices. Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said the NNPCL hiked prices in response to prevailing circumstances in the energy industry. Mohammed said the oil company did not act on any instruction from the federal government, as the government can no longer fix prices of petroleum products, in line with the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA). He said with the subsidy regime ending in May 2023, the NNPCL had only been paying differential to keep the price within the range it had been, but the company said it could no longer absorb the losses.

Primate Ayodele Predicts Massive Hunger Revolt Against Tinubu Government In 2025

Primate Elijah Ayodele, the Leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church has revealed that that there will be more hardship in 2025. He added that there would be an economic blackout, which would cause citizens to revolt against the Nigerian government. In a statement signed by his media aide, Osho Oluwatosin, Primate Ayodele made it known that the Nigerian government had failed to perform its duties by working towards bringing an end to the current hardship faced by Nigerian citizens. Primate Ayodele noted that Nigerians are suffering but it will bite harder next year unless the government does what is expected of it. He said refineries will not solve Nigeria’s problems because it will be frustrated. ‘’As it is now, we will soon buy rice for N150,000 and beans for more than N200,000. The government hasn’t done what they are supposed to do to bring the price of food commodities down. People are suffering and haven’t enjoyed this government. Instead, it’s still more suffering and agony. ‘’The hardship is coming up and will bite Nigeria hard next year. The government has refused to solve the country’s problems and that’s why the Nigerian economy will fail. Refinery will not create anything and foreign exchange will not improve, it will still increase except something is done but I don’t see this government doing anything.’’ Primate Ayodele noted that economic hardship will be three times harder next year unless the government does the needful. He added: ‘’The price of every commodity, kerosene, gas, diesel, etc will continue to be expensive because there is so much rot in the country. The government ought to take out some people from this administration, but, surprisingly, the president is comfortable despite the gross irresponsibility in the country. ‘’Economic hardship will be times three of what we are experiencing now next year; the government must be careful so that the citizens will not revolt. There will be a kind of economic blackout.’’

FG Moves To Reduce Rate Of Out-Of-School Children

The Federal Government has restated its commitment to reduce the incidence of out-of-school children through enhanced budgetary allocation and sustain advocacy. Vice-President Kashim Shettima, made the commitment at the International Conference on Girl Child Education, organised by the Nigeria Governors’ Forum on Thursday in Abuja. The theme of the conference is “Girl child empowerment through quality education.” Mr Shettima, represented by the Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Senator Ibrahim Hadejia, said statistics of out of school children in Nigeria are a stark reminder of the “urgency of this mission.” He pointed out that risk posed by each out of school child should concern all stakeholders, and “what we need is a concerted, multi-sectoral approach.” He emphasised the need for the Federal Government, states, local governments, civil society and partners in the donor community to come together with a singular focus. According to him, the latest multiple indicator cluster survey showed that 25.6 per cent of children of primary school age are out of school. He said, “And this rate rises to 29.6 per cent for secondary school age children, each child, abandoned to the streets, is a liability that the nation will one day pay for. We must therefore remember that the child who remains out of school today will be a threat to their peers in the classroom tomorrow. And we cannot afford to turn away from this reality, and the need for creative and innovative solutions is now more present than ever. The issue of girl child education is for every nation, but in our part of the world, her vulnerability is especially pronounced.” Mr Shettima said that the National Economic Council set out to guarantee the future of a girl child by adopting education as one of its critical thematic areas of intervention, alongside health, nutrition and employability in a rapidly changing world. He stated, “We have set the ambitious goal of achieving 0.6 score on the World Bank’s human capital index. And we understand that the road to this objective involves increasing years of schooling, improving the quality of education and ensuring that no child, especially no girl child, is left vulnerable or out of school. Our data further emphasises the urgency of addressing these issues, particularly in northern Nigeria.” He stated that states in the North-West and North-East face the highest out of school rates in Kebbi, Zamfara, and Bauchi states. He noted, “For example, more than 60 per cent of primary school age children are not in school with Kebbi at a staggering 64.8 per cent. The secondary school numbers are similarly alarming with Bauchi at 66.75 per cent, Kebbi at 63.8 percent and Jigawa is my own state, at 62.6 per cent. We cannot allow ourselves to be held hostage by these frightening numbers. Now is the time to treat them as an emergency. And the only way forward is to take specific action plans that address the unique needs and barriers in each region.” Mr Shettima said that education financing remains a critical aspect of the Federal Government strategy in the last few years. He said, “We have seen a significant increase in education expenditure. For example, in 2022 states spent one trillion naira on education, representing 12 per cent of total expenditures. By 2024, states committed N2.4 trillion to education, while the federal government allocated N2.2 trillion. This brings the combined total allocation to N4.6 trillion. Although states have 14 per cent of their budgets dedicated to education, we must aim higher. Our campaign to see 15 to 20 per cent of the state budget allocated to education is not just a target, but a necessity as it is the surest way to guarantee the future of our children and our nation.”

Bridging the Divide: How Eniola Taiwo’s Smartsave is Bringing Offline Nigeria into the Digital Economy

Bridging the Divide: How Eniola Taiwo’s Smartsave is Bringing Offline Nigeria into the Digital Economy

An Exclusive Interview with CityBuzzNews CityBuzzNews: In today’s Nigeria, fintech startups seem to emerge almost every week, many of them targeting the same digital-savvy population. But there’s still a large segment of the population that operates mostly in cash. What inspired you to focus on this overlooked group? Eniola Taiwo: You’re absolutely right. We looked at the market and saw a gap wide enough to drive a truck through. Everyone was building for the online user, but no one was building a bridge for the offline user to cross over. That’s the problem we decided to solve with Smartsave. We wanted to make financial inclusion truly inclusive. CityBuzzNews: That’s an interesting perspective. So how exactly does Smartsave bridge that gap between offline and online users? Eniola Taiwo: Smartsave operates on what we call a “phygital” model – essentially a blend of physical and digital services. Instead of expecting users to come fully online immediately, we meet them where they are. We have a network of trained field agents, or what we call account officers, who go into communities, register customers physically, and collect cash savings directly from them. Once the agent collects a deposit, they log it into our admin app. Within moments, that transaction reflects in the customer’s Smartsave digital wallet, and they get an SMS confirming it. From there, they can download our app and begin tracking their balance in real time. It’s seamless. CityBuzzNews: That sounds like a clever way to build trust. What made you believe this model would work in a cash-heavy society like Nigeria? Eniola Taiwo: It all comes down to trust. You can’t just tell someone who has dealt in cash their whole life to suddenly trust a mobile app. You have to start with a handshake, a receipt, and a human conversation. Once they see that their physical cash is now safely reflected in a digital balance they can view, the fear fades. That’s when adoption begins. We realized that digital transformation for this segment has to start from relationship before technology. CityBuzzNews: Impressive. How has the response been so far in terms of growth and adoption? Eniola Taiwo: It’s been very encouraging. We’ve already onboarded over 5,000 users, even though we’re still in our growth phase. What’s more exciting is that about 40% of those who started with only physical deposits have now downloaded the Smartsave app to track their savings and even make bill payments. So far, we’ve processed over ₦30 million in transactions, including savings and bills. Every week, our field officers keep signing up dozens of new customers who eventually begin engaging with the app themselves. It’s a gradual but powerful migration from offline to digital. CityBuzzNews: Beyond the business numbers, what does this mean to you personally as a founder? Eniola Taiwo: For me, this goes beyond business. It’s about empowerment. Smartsave is not just helping people save – it’s helping them build financial confidence. When I see a woman who has always relied on cash now using the Smartsave app to pay her electricity bill or track her savings, that’s deeply fulfilling. We are guiding people into the digital economy one Naira at a time, and that, to me, is the real impact. CityBuzzNews: Finally, where do you see Smartsave – and the future of fintech in Nigeria – heading next? Eniola Taiwo: I believe the future of fintech in Nigeria isn’t purely digital; it’s phygital. For financial inclusion to truly work in a country like ours, innovation must walk hand-in-hand with accessibility and human connection. Smartsave is proving that you can merge both worlds successfully – and that’s where we’re headed.
