Man’s Ending Far Better Than Beginning, Adeboye Advises At 83

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye says power for a good ending – a greater tomorrow is very vital to humans. This is as he emphasises that life’s ending can far surpass its beginning. Speaking during the Church’s monthly Thanksgiving Service at its Lagos headquarters on Sunday which coincides with the cleric’s 83rd birthday, Adeboye used biblical teachings and personal insights to inspire his audience. He also urged them to focus on building a glorious future. Quoting the Bible, he said, “The book of Isaiah 3:10 says, ‘Say to the righteous, it shall be well with him.’” He explained life as a three-phased journey—past, present, and future—emphasising the importance of planning today for a better tomorrow. “The past is the mother of today. The present has the DNA of the past. You’re who you are today because of certain decisions you took in the past. “You are a medical doctor today because you chose to go to a medical school in the past. The decisions you take today will invariably affect your tomorrow,” he remarked. Highlighting the significance of the future, Adeboye added, “Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof. It is how you end that matters. “The Almighty God has the ability to guarantee your future. He can make sure that your tomorrow is great.” Example of Abraham To illustrate, Adeboye referenced the story of Abraham, saying, “God blessed Abraham in all things and made him great. Isaac, his son, was very great. “Jacob, the son of Isaac, was exceedingly great. God can take you from great to greater to exceedingly great.” He noted the generational growth of Abraham’s lineage: “Abraham had one child that God recognised. Isaac had two sons. Jacob had 12 sons. These 12 multiplied. “By the time they were going to Egypt, they were 70, and when they were leaving Egypt, they had become 600,000 people.” Keys to a Greater Future Adeboye urged his audience to embrace preparation and discipline for a greater tomorrow, particularly in raising children. “Train your children because they are your tomorrow. The Yorubas say a child you don’t train will sell the house you are building. “God vouched for Abraham because He knew Abraham would train his children in the way of the Lord,” he said. He warned parents against laxity, advising, “Don’t allow your children to do whatever they like. “If you allow them, you are ruining your future. Be firm when it comes to your children serving the Lord.” To children, Adeboye gave a stern reminder: “You’re not only to obey your parents; you are to honour them. “It is by honouring your parents that you will live long. If you think you know more than your parents, you may never live long.” Diligence and Humility For a greater future, Adeboye highlighted the principles of sowing, diligence, and humility. “Learn to sow. It is what you sow in the present that will be your harvest in the future. Also, be diligent. God is a rewarder of those who are diligent,” he counselled. On humility, he said, “Pride is a killer. God resists the proud. You can’t have a future if God is constantly resisting you. “Submit to God, and He will make sure no one tampers with your destiny.” Promise of a Glorious Future Concluding, Adeboye underscored that a glorious future is only guaranteed for those in Christ. “You have a glorious future if Christ lives in you,” he affirmed. NLC Halts Protest As Subscribers Embrace 35% Tariff Increase

The Nigeria Labour Congress has shelved its planned protest scheduled for March 1, 2025, after reaching an agreement with the Federal Government on a 35 per cent increase in telecom tariffs, The PUNCH reports. NLC’s decision was welcomed by the National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers on Thursday, as the group called for better relief measures for telcos. On January 20, 2025, the Nigerian Communications Commission announced a 50 per cent hike in telecommunications tariffs—the first major adjustment in over a decade. Telecom operators, grappling with rising operational costs due to inflation and currency depreciation, had initially proposed a 100 per cent increase before the government intervened. Multiple insider sources at the NLC informed The PUNCH on Thursday that negotiations between the union and the Federal Government resulted in a compromise, lowering the initially proposed 50 per cent increase to 35 per cent. A 10-member committee was formed to deliberate and finalise the agreement. An impeccable source with the labour union said, “Have you not heard that an agreement has been reached between the NLC and the FG? The 50 per cent hike in telecom tariff has been reduced to 35 per cent as agreed by the 10-man committee.” When asked if this means the protest scheduled for March 1 would be shelved, the source replied, “That should be obvious.” In a previous interview with The PUNCH, the Chairperson of the Lagos State chapter of the NLC, Funmi Sessi, condemned the Federal Government’s decision to approve a 35 per cent increase, calling it an unfair burden on already struggling Nigerians. “How can the Federal Government be the one determining prices? This is an anomaly,” she argued. Sessi said any tariff adjustment should be gradual and not exceed 15 per cent, given the current economic hardship. Meanwhile, the NLC Public Relations Officer, Upah Benson, told The PUNCH that there would be a National Executive Council meeting of the union today (Friday) to deliberate further on the matter. NATCOMS welcomes reduction The President of the National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers, Adeolu Ogunbanjo, has welcomed the reported reduction of the proposed 50 per cent telecom tariff hike to 35 per cent but called for more relief measures to ease the burden on consumers. Speaking in response to reports of the tariff adjustment, Ogunbanjo said NATCOMS was not invited to be part of the committee that reviewed the rates. “I believe it is 35 per cent, but this is based on what I heard from sources,” Ogunbanjo told The PUNCH. “That information has been out there since Monday.” He described the 15 per cent reduction as a result of consumer advocacy but urged telecom operators to consider further reductions to cushion the impact on subscribers. “We fought, and at least a 15 per cent reduction is something,” he said. The Nigerian Communications Commission, which regulates the telecom sector, and industry groups, including the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria and the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria, did not respond to requests for comment. Suspend Dstv Price Hike, Govt Orders MultiChoice

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has directed MultiChoice Nigeria, the operator of DStv and GOtv, to suspend its planned subscription price hike pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation into the company’s proposed tariff adjustment. The consumer watchdog disclosed the directive in a statement signed by its Director of Corporate Affairs, Ondaje Ijagwu, on Thursday, citing the need to protect consumers from potential exploitation during the review process. The commission’s order follows MultiChoice’s request for an extension regarding its scheduled appearance before the regulator over mounting concerns about the company’s recurrent price increases. Earlier, the FCCPC had summoned MultiChoice’s Chief Executive Officer to appear before it on February 27 for an investigative hearing. However, following the company’s request, the commission rescheduled the hearing to March 6, 2025, mandating the attendance of the CEO and relevant officers and the submission of a comprehensive response. “As part of this directive, MultiChoice is expressly instructed to maintain the existing price structure as of February 27, 2025, pending the commission’s review and final determination on the matter,” the statement read. The FCCPC underscored that the price freeze is a precautionary measure to safeguard consumers against arbitrary pricing adjustments while the inquiry is ongoing. MultiChoice had earlier informed customers of the impending price review, set to take effect on March 1, 2025, attributing the adjustment to the rising costs of delivering premium content. According to the notice titled “Price Adjustments for DStv and GOtv Packages,” the company stated: “Dear Customer, please note that effective March 1, 2025, there will be a price adjustment on all DStv packages. This is to enable us to continue offering our customers world-class homegrown and international content, delivered through the best technology.” While the Compact Plus and Premium bouquets will remain at N30,000 and N44,500, respectively, the DStv Compact package is among the subscriptions expected to be affected by the price increase. The FCCPC said further updates would be provided as the investigation progresses. Punch

The local government will not tolerate any form of violence or lawlessness that threatens the lives and livelihoods of its people.” While commiserating with the families of the deceased, Zibiri urged the state government and security agencies to swiftly investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice. He stressed the need for increased security presence in rural communities to prevent further violence and protect farmers, whom he described as the backbone of the local economy. Zibiri also appealed to residents to remain calm and law-abiding, urging community leaders and stakeholders to work with security agencies by providing useful information that could lead to the arrest of the culprits. Meanwhile, the Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, Moses Yamu, said he had yet to receive details of the incident from officers in the area but would provide updates once available. I’ve Resumed As Lagos Assembly Speaker, Says Obasa

The ousted Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has stated that he has resumed his position as the parliament’s leader. Obasa stated this on Thursday after returning to the assembly complex with police and State Security Service details for the first time since he was removed on January 13. “I’ve resumed, and I remain the Speaker of the Assembly,” Obasa told reporters on the premises of the House. Asked whether he has been reinstated as speaker, Obasa said, “I’ve never been removed. Impeachment or removal is democratic and constitutional but in doing that, you must follow the due process. I am not against that. If I do that, then I am not democratic.” PUNCH Online reports that Obasa, alongside security officials, had entered the Speaker’s Office around 12 noon on Thursday. The development followed the withdrawal of the security aides of the Speaker, Mojisola Meranda. The assembly has been embroiled in a leadership crisis since Obasa’s removal as speaker and the subsequent election of Meranda. Obasa was accused by over 90 per cent of the lawmakers of poor leadership style, perpetual lateness to legislative functions and plenary, high-handedness and disregard for colleague lawmakers and the executive, especially the governor, abuse of office and privileges, intimidation and oppression of members among others. In an attempt to resolve the crisis, some All Progressives Congress bigwigs, notably former governors of Osun, Ogun and Lagos states, Chief Bisi Akande, Segun Osoba, and Akinwunmi Ambode, respectively, among others, on the directive of President Bola Tinubu, had a series of meetings last weekend with political stakeholders in the state including members of the assembly. The PUNCH learnt at the end of the meetings that both Obasa and Meranda might be stepping aside for another lawmaker to lead the house. A member of the Governors Advisory Council, Chief Muraina Taiwo, noted that one of the seven lawmakers from Lagos West was being considered by the party leaders as the new Speaker. Punch
