The Wrath of Nigeria & Why Everyone Is Complicit – By Jimi Kusanu

It was ludicrous having stumbled on a reportage of the president’s wife claiming to be a “detribalized” citizen of Nigeria. I could not help but ponder exactly what that meant. What does it inherently mean to be detribalized? Does it suggest that you no longer identify with the ethnic stock to which you belong? Or after having performed some symbolic rites, your ideological disposition may now be considered more “ecumenical?” I find it utterly worrisome that a supposed first lady of a steeply ethnically divergent society would conceive, then make such pronouncement. Such pronouncement can be likened to when an individual says, “I am now deconverted.” The obvious question subsequently arises, how are you deconverted if you were never converted? If an individual is born Muslim or Christian, he as anticipated, practices the religious tenets and follows the doctrine of the religion. In other words, an individual cannot be “detribalized” if they were never tribalized to begin with. If one’s ethnic philosophy and judgement tilted more towards ecumenism, rather than chauvinism or jingoism, I presume one would not have to undergo such laborious task of detribalization. How do I know it is a laborious task? Why else would a former lawmaker cum First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria make such a statement if it were not for citizens to acknowledge and be cognizant of her efforts to nowadays evince a more panoramic view of “nationalism?” The articulation of the foregoing is germane to the motif of this blurb because of its nuanced centrality in pop culture conversation in both the digital and physical spaces in recent times , especially since the conclusion of the 2023 Nigerian General Elections and the vastly controversial inauguration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It is first disheartening, then embarrassingly agonizing to inescapably find oneself in both digital and physical spaces where discourses border nothing except jingoistic chitchat and other attendant nonsense. X, formerly Twitter, appeared to be the hub of socially, culturally and politically progressive discourses amongst Nigerian netizens. This I am persuaded to believe is owed to the concentration of the demographic who are its leading users. Except that these days, there has been a seismic shift in the themes of discussions. Conversations have drifted from polemics on potentially progressive, cultural, social and political ambitions and other regular drivels to nauseating, intellect-declining and exhausting squabbles of completely trifling and quite inane subjects. I struggle to believe my eyes on the many occasions I have seen Nigerian youths go against one another on what ethnic groups have the best soups or cuisines; what tribe has the most beautiful women, or whose region is bedevilled with less sociocultural ills. This is not usually some friendly banter by the way. 21st century Nigerians, among many of whom are graduates , eligible for advanced degrees have been polarized, subjugated and defeated such that they are endlessly at each other’s throats on the most unimaginably irrelevant and stupid subject matter. An example was when the Ojude Oba Festival held in Ogun State, southwestern Nigeria got its increased media attention concluded in 2024; an avalanche of slurs intended to discredit and ridicule the glamour the event seemed to have paraded was started by narrow-minded characters who have now been loosely christened bigots. Ethnic chauvinists like them within the Yoruba folk too could not conceal their pungent bigoted grandstanding. Following the 2023 elections, it is somewhat unsurprising that the Yoruba and Igbos would be the two tribes constantly warring. The squabbles are so intense that malediction and profanity are not omitted. All these can be traced to the Nigerian history. The founders and the fighters for the independence of Nigeria. The two patriarchs of both Yoruba and Igbo political evolution and civilization who were political arch-rivals. Sixty three years after independence, a keenly contested election was underway. Primary players included a widely supported contestant from the Igbo tribe and a political big deal who made a statement at one of his campaign rounds in the lines of, “it is now my time.” A statement I personally found distasteful. To understand the apparent rancour between the two ethnicities and by extension other ethnicities in the country, I imagine it is imperative to sojourn back to the past. The beginning of what appears will be the end of an entity called Nigeria – ethnic and religious intolerance. The build up to the Jan 15th coup has garnered innumerable controversies overtime; controversies I shall attempt to disentangle in my best capacity. First, the Igbos cannot claim total innocence. Follow this with all open-mindedness you can whether you’re Igbo or otherwise. The leadership of the coup was by high ranking officers of the Army who were from the Igbo extraction. Major Chukwuma “Kaduna” Nzeogwu , Emmanuel Arinze Ifeajuna , Timothy Onwuatuegwu, Christian Anuforo, Humphrey Chukwuka, Donatus Okafor and Adewale Ademoyega are the documented leaders of the putsch. Only one of these officers is non- Igbo. The above-mentioned officers, during the planning, coordination and execution of the coup, contributed in one way or another to sentiments that have led many non- Igbos to christen it the “Igbo Coup.” For instance, Chris Anuforo, involved in the coup, killed Colonel Kur Mohammed and Lieutenant-Colonel Pam and Unegbe. Donatus Okafor, a conspirator of the coup, conveniently failed to arrest General Agunyi-Ironsi who would assume the position of Head of State. Ifeajuna , the celebrated Olympian is rumoured to be a tribal kinsman of Nnamdi Azikiwe, the first President of Nigeria in the First Republic. It is also alleged by sources who were active participants in the national polity that Ifeajuna had hinted Azikiwe of the coup, and that could explain his coincidental trip to the Caribbean on health grounds. After General Ironsi became Head of State, many wondered why the putschist were only arrested and not prosecuted. This cast a croynist aspersion on the motive of Ironsi’s leadership. Senate Rules Out Live Coverage Of Natasha’s Hearing

The Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions has rejected calls for live television coverage of the proceedings against the Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. The Chairman of the Committee, Senator Neda Imasuen, disclosed this on Wednesday during an interview on Arise Television’s programme, The Morning Show. PUNCH Online reports that the Kogi lawmaker had called for live coverage of the committee’s hearing over her clash with the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, over seat allocation. Explaining the committee’s decision, Imasuen emphasised the need to maintain focus on the issue at hand without external distractions. “Regarding media coverage, we want to be very careful not to overplay things. This is a matter within the Senate, and turning it into a media affair could be distracting. My committee room can only accommodate a limited number of people, and the committee itself has about 23 or 24 members. We need to stay focused on the issue before us without unnecessary distractions.” The lawmaker also assured Nigerians that Akpoti-Uduaghan would be given a fair hearing during the proceedings. He said, “Distinguished Senator Natasha has the same privileges as any other senator, and her rights will be protected. She will receive a fair hearing in this matter for as long as I am in charge. She is my friend, and no one will trample on her rights.” When asked about the ongoing controversy regarding alleged sexual misconduct in the Senate, Imasuen declined to comment, citing legal constraints. “The issue of sexual misconduct in the Senate is already before a court of law, which makes the matter sub judice. I cannot comment on any case that is before a court, and as a lawyer, I must respect that legal principle.” Punch

BREAKING: Court Stops Senate From Probing Natasha

A Federal High Court in Abuja has restrained the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions from conducting a disciplinary proceeding against the Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. The presiding judge, Obiora Egwuatu, gave the order on Tuesday following an ex parte application filed by Akpoti-Uduaghan’s counsel. On February 20, the Kogi Central lawmaker clashed with Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, over seat allocation. She rejected her assigned seat, defying Akpabio’s order and repeatedly raising a point of order despite being overruled. The Senator representing Ekiti South Sentorial District, Yemi Adaramodu, who raised a point of order during plenary, said the incident had tarnished the Senate’s image. He said attempts to clarify the Senate’s position have been unsuccessful as the people already have their opinion on the incident based on the Kogi lawmaker’s action. Following the development, the Senate referred Akpoti-Uduaghan to the Ethics committee for disciplinary review. The upper legislative chamber took the decision during last Tuesday‘s plenary, following consideration and adoption of a report presented by Adaramdou. Senators unanimously approved that the matter be referred to the committee after it was put to a voice vote by Akpabio. The Senate President asked the committee to review the entire incident and report back to the Red Chamber. More to come… Punch

Power Generation Hits 5,713MW — TCN

The Transmission Company of Nigeria has disclosed that the nation’s power generation hit 5,713.60 megawatts on Tuesday, the highest since four years ago. In a statement on Tuesday, the TCN announced that the power sector had achieved a new peak generation for the year 2025, which was successfully transmitted. It stated that the feat was recorded on Tuesday, surpassing the 5.543MW recorded on February 14. “This was recorded on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, at 21:30 hours, with the new generation peak of 5,713.60 megawatts (MW), surpassing the previous peak generation of 5,543.20MW achieved on February 14, 2025, by 170.40 MW,” the TCN stated. It clarified that though this new peak is 88MW lower than the all-time maximum peak generation of 5,801.60MW recorded on March 1, 2021, it remains a notable achievement. It added that the maximum daily energy also rose to 125,542.06 megawatt-hours, up from 125,159.48MWh achieved last month. “Furthermore, a new record for the maximum daily energy ever attained in the history of the electricity industry in Nigeria was also set yesterday, with a total of 125,542.06 megawatt-hours (MWh). This surpasses the previous record of 125,159.48MWh achieved on February 14, 2025, by 382.58 MWh,” the statement added. The PUNCH reports that the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, promised Nigerians that power generation would rise to 6,000MW by December 2024. However, this could not be achieved due to vandalism, grid collapses, and poor power infrastructure. At the moment, over 50 per cent of Nigerians lack access to electricity. Punch

Rivers Assembly Gives Fubara 48 Hours To Submit 2025 Budget

The Rivers State House of Assembly has given the state governor, Similaya Fubara 48 hours to present the 2025 budget to the lawmakers. The lawmakers made the request during their sitting in Port Harcourt on Monday. On January 2nd, Governor Fubara signed the ₦1.1 trillion 2025 Budget into law after presenting it to lawmakers led by Victor Oko-Jumbo. However, months later, the Supreme Court ruled that Martin Amaewhule and his group were legitimate members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, ending the leadership crisis that had split the house. In their first sitting after the judgement, the lawmakers asked the governor to present the budget, which he had named the “Budget of Inclusive Growth and Development.” The Supreme Court also ordered the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to withhold allocations to Rivers State for disobeying court orders. It further nullified the local government elections conducted in the state last year. In response, Fubara directed the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission to conduct fresh local government elections. “Furthermore, given the outlawing of caretaker arrangements in the local government system, I hereby direct the Heads of Local Government Administration to immediately take over the administration of the 23 local government councils pending the conduct of fresh elections by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission,” the governor said in a state broadcast on Sunday. He also instructed the “outgoing local government chairmen to formally hand over the levers of power to the Heads of Local Government Administration by Monday, 3rd March 2025.” Punch

Just In – NDLEA Apprehends Wanted Drug Baron In Lagos After 17 Years

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have arrested a wanted 59-year-old international drug baron, Ogbonnaya Jeff. He was apprehended at his hideout in the Ojo area of Lagos after 17 years of evading authorities. Addressing journalists in Abuja on Monday, the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.), said the agency’s Special Operations Unit had been tracking Ogbonnaya following an Interpol Red Notice against him and intelligence from the National Intelligence Service of South Korea. He stated that the agency had gathered incontrovertible evidence of Ogbonnaya’s activities, including his recruitment of young Nigerians as drug couriers to smuggle illicit substances into the Republic of Korea. He said, “The major development that warranted this special briefing pertains to the arrest of a drug lord wanted across the world as the leader of an international drug trafficking organization. “On Wednesday, February 12, 2025, we arrested Ogbonnaya Kevin Jeff, a 59-year-old drug baron. The suspect was apprehended at his hideout at No. 3, Ibukunoluwa Taiwo Close, off LASU Road, Lagos. He had been under NDLEA investigation before his arrest. As a result, we have comprehensive intelligence on his activities and incontrovertible facts confirming that he is a notorious drug lord who recruited young Nigerians as couriers to smuggle illicit substances into the Republic of Korea (South Korea). “Our records reveal that many Nigerians apprehended outside the country for drug-related offences were linked to him. Furthermore, we have established that he laundered drug proceeds through the importation of electronics and other goods. Following his arrest, a search of his residence led to the recovery of multiple Nigerian international passports belonging to different individuals, many of which contained Korean visas. Additionally, we recovered some illicit substances stored at the back of his house.” Marwa said Ogbonnaya had previously served a one-year prison term in South Korea in 2007 before being deported to Nigeria in 2008. However, he resumed his illicit operations, orchestrating drug shipments to the Far East. “Ogbonnaya maintains another domestic carrier, identified as ‘Asa,’ who delivers drug consignments to a warehouse operated by Okori Emmanuel, a Nigerian who serves as his supply manager in South Korea. As of now, two arrest warrants have been issued against Ogbonnaya by the Seoul Central District Court in January and June 2024. These warrants charge him with importing narcotic drugs in violation of Article 3-7 of South Korea’s Narcotics Control Act, an offence punishable by a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.” Marwa, however, reaffirmed the NDLEA’s commitment to ensuring that Nigeria does not serve as a base for international drug trafficking operations.

JUST IN: Ex-Lagos PDP Gov Candidate, Jandor, Dumps Party

A former Lagos State governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party during the 2023 general election, Abdul-Azeez Adediran, popularly known as Jandor, has dumped the party. Jandor announced his resignation at a press briefing held at Liberty Place, Ikeja, in Lagos on Monday. According to him, his reasons for leaving the party are not unconnected to indiscipline and anti-party activities, which have become the norm in his erstwhile party. The ex-PDP governorship candidate, who a large group of supporters accompanied, revealed that the decision to part ways with the PDP stemmed from actions taken by some of the party’s leaders, including the former Deputy National Chairman, Chief Olabode George. According to Jandor, these leaders actively worked against the PDP in the 2023 elections. “We will consult widely with everybody and then take the decision to collapse our structure to another platform. What is majority on the ground now is that we have left the Peoples Democratic Party,” Jandor stated. Details later…

NANS urges FG to probe non-payment of N77,000 corps members’ allowance.

The National Association of Nigerian Students has called on the Federal Government to investigate the National Youth Service Corps over the non-payment of the newly approved N77,000 monthly allowance for corps members. NANS expressed disappointment that months after the Federal Government approved the increase from N33,000 to N77,000—effective July 2024—the NYSC has yet to implement the payment. The Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, stated that the new allowance was not implemented due to the non-release of funds. NANS in a statement by its National Vice President, Inter-Campus Affairs, Felicia Akinbodunse, on Sunday, justified the call for the probe of the NYSC for failure to commence payment of the new corps monthly allowance by the end of February as promised by the Director-General of the Corps. She wondered what delayed the payment after the official announcement by Yushua that corps members would start receiving the N77,000 in February 2025. According to her, findings by her office revealed that corps members received only N33,000 for their February allowance last Friday, against N70,000 promised by the NYSC DG. Akinbodunse noted that the FG and many state governments have since begun to pay their workers the new minimum wage of N70,000, adding that the NYSC has no justification to withhold the payment of the approved allowance to corps members. She pointed out that it would amount to gross injustice on the part of corps members to still be receiving old allowance months after approval and implementation by the Federal Government. While calling on the NYSC to give reasons behind the failure to implement the payment of the N77,000 corps monthly allowance, she insisted that the FG should investigate the matter to determine the cause of the delay. She added that the failure to pay the new allowance to corps members could dampen their morale, especially in the face of the economic situation in the country. Akinbodunse, however, submitted that “the leadership of the student body would equally interface with the NYSC to find out why corps members are yet to benefit from the new minimum wage of N77,000, even when staff of the NYSC are receiving the increase in pay from the Federal Government.” Punch
