Electricity Distributors Demand Justice For Brutalised IKEDC Workers, Journalists

The Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors has asked the Nigerian Air Force, the military, and the presidency to fish out officers and men of the Sam Ethnan Air Force Base, Ikeja, who attacked staff and journalists at Ikeja Electric on Thursday. The association said it would not relent until justice is served to everyone brutalised by the armed men at the headquarters of IKEDC in Alausa, Lagos. Our correspondent, who was also brutalised by the military men on Thursday, reports that after the invasion of the IKEDC and the brutalisation of persons, the Area Officer Commanding,Logistics Command, Air Vice Marshall AK Ademulegun, visited the office later in the day, promising to investigate the incident. However, in an interview on TVC on Friday, the Executive Director, Research and Advocacy, Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors, Sunday Oduntan, said Ademulegun could not feign ignorance of the attack. Oduntan, who is also the spokesman of all the DisCos said the association would not relent in seeking redress until justice is served. He emphasised that the debt of the Ikeja Air Force Base is N4.3bn, and no attempt is being made to pay the debt. “I want to believe that we’re in a sane country. I still want to believe that we’re better than we were in 1978 when Fela’s house was invaded. So, we want to see what will happen. We have to see what the presidency will do, and the military authorities too, because normally, heads must roll; not should role, heads must roll. “For people to leave Ikeja Air Force Base fully armed in trucks, to go somewhere and start beating civilians; they made them lie down on the floor of the Air Force base, more than a hundred people, and beating them repeatedly, someone must pay for this,” he stressed. Oduntan likened the invasion of the IKEDC by armed to a coup against all DisCos, calling on the nation’s political leaders to give this the seriousness it deserves, describing it as a very traumatic experience that has left many sleepless since yesterday. “This is to the political class, this is not the time for you to be kissing your husband or kissing your wife to make any public show at the National Assembly. What the Air Force from Ikeja did to us yesterday was an indication that they can do a lot of things to all of you. This is how people easily plan and execute a coup. Because in a country where they will sign out vehicles and trucks with fully armed men, they signed out arms to invade civilians, we should not be dealing with issues that are not even important. “What we should begin with now should be the issue of good governance. We should be at a point where no military person should be able to plan anything funny. What they did yesterday for us as DisCos is our coup. I pray they will not do that to the Lagos State Government, the National Assembly, or the Nigerian government. But unless these people are brought out, and we receive justice, I can assure you that they will do it again, and they will do it in a larger proportion. What happened yesterday was a coup against Ikeja Electric. “And we need them to assure us of our safety, not just by one AVM saying you assure us after you sent your officers to come and kill us. So, this is something that the President needs to react to. Unless and until the military authorities do something about this openly and transparently, until they bring all the culprits to book, and we can see them, and they have to return the database, all the things that they took away. We no go gree(sic). They didn’t want us to see their faces from the CCTV, so they took the database away. There must be full restoration,” Oduntan declared. Punch

JUST IN: Senate Committee Recommends Six-Month Suspension For Natasha

The Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions has recommended a six-month suspension for Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central. This decision follows her allegations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. During an ongoing plenary session on Thursday, the committee advises that her salary and security details be withdrawn. The Committee’s chairman, Senator Neda Imasuen, who presented the panel’s report at plenary, said Natasha was guilty of all allegations against her as she failed to submit herself to the legislative Committee for the review of her conduct. Additionally, Akpoti-Uduaghan is expected to issue a formal apology to the Senate for actions deemed disrespectful. The controversy ignited earlier this year when Akpoti-Uduaghan accused Akpabio of sexual harassment and abuse of office. She claimed that her motions, particularly concerning the Ajaokuta Steel Company, were deliberately obstructed. Furthermore, she alleged that Akpabio referred to her as a “night club girl” on the Senate floor, a remark he later apologized for. These allegations were formalized in a petition she resubmitted to the Senate. In response, Akpabio has consistently denied all allegations, emphasizing his respect for women and refuting claims of any misconduct. He expressed disappointment over the committee’s recommendation, labelling the accusations as unfounded. The Senate is scheduled to debate the committee’s report, with discussions focusing on potential amendments before a final decision is reached. Akpoti-Uduaghan’s absence during the committee’s probe has raised further concerns, as she failed to appear despite prior notifications. As the situation unfolds, all eyes are on the Senate’s forthcoming deliberations, which will determine the final outcome of the committee’s recommendations. Asuquo Ekpenyong of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is the current senator representing the Cross River South senatorial district at the Nigerian senate. Senator Steve Karimi from Kogi West (APC) also spoke to issues afterwards apologising to Akpabio for backing her for a leadership role. Meanwhile, minority leader, Senator Abba Moro from Benue South (PDP) urged that the suspension be reduced to three months which he believes is more than enough to put things in order. Punch

Tyre Spikes Now In Place To Discourage One-Way Driving In Oyo

IBADAN – The Oyo state government has installed one-way tyre spikes to deter motorists from driving against traffic, reinforcing its commitment to road safety and traffic regulation enforcement. The spike barrier was recently installed at Idi-Ape, Ibadan North East Local Government Area, drawing commendation from motorists. A viral video showcasing the functionality of the spikes demonstrated how they puncture the tyres of vehicles attempting to drive in the wrong direction. A source, speaking anonymously, revealed that the initiative is part of broader efforts to enforce traffic laws, curb reckless driving, and reduce accidents caused by one-way violations. Beyond preventing violations, authorities hope the measure will instill greater discipline among road users. As of the time of this report, the state government had not issued an official statement on whether more spike barriers would be installed in other locations. However, commuters see the move as a strong stance against traffic violations and a step towards safer roads in Oyo State.

African Countries Have Capacity To Ensure Global Food Sufficiency, Says Makinde•••As Sierra Leonean President, Team Tour Fasola Agribusiness Hub

IBADAN – Oyo State governor, Engr. ‘Seyi Makinde, has said that African countries have the capacity to ensure food sufficiency in the world, apart from meeting their local needs. He stated this on Wednesday, during a high-level panel discussion held at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) Headquarters, Ibadan, as part of the Presidential Visit Programme in honour of the President, Republic of Sierra Leone, Dr Julius Maada Bio. “I have heard about data where they said Africa is about 1.4 billion people, and so also is India and so is China. So, we should look inwards in terms of food production and food security, but the efforts that we need to take on the whole world is not more than what we need for import substitution. “The real catch is that we must not only be satisfied with meeting our local needs, we have the capacity to also take on the world in terms of solving the global food sufficiency challenge,” Makinde said. While sharing his administration’s experiences on the successful and impactful agribusiness initiatives implemented in Oyo State, the governor said that his administration focused on agribusiness knowing that it could be a major driver of the state’s economy and also help to achieve the vision of taking people from poverty to prosperity and tackling hunger. The governor equally stated that his administration had been deliberate about driving agriculture with technology, innovations and data, saying that the tractorisation policy, which helps farmers with a 50 percent subsidy on ploughing, verification of farmers and input support to smallholders were among the deliberate efforts taken to ensure food security and sufficiency. He said: “When we came in, we took agribusiness as one of the major pillars to expand our economy. We had a workshop and took all the stakeholders to the Republic of Benin, because we didn’t want any distraction. “We put our roadmap together and started tracking it. Few things came up at that workshop, which we believed would work for us. “When we started, we saw those things that worked and vice-versa, that was when we started tackling hunger to break the cycle of poverty among our people in the state. “What has also worked for us is utilising technology to verify the actual data. We went to Israel and saw that they could feed themselves while also exporting, but the entire state of Israel does not have more than 10,000 farmers to do all the fanciful things they are doing all over the world. “We saw that we are a little bit far from the mechanisation programme. We used to have a Tractor Unit in Oyo State and we asked them where the tractors were, but they were nowhere to be found. “So, we concluded that we would not invest money again to purchase tractors but would leave the private people to run it as a business and the private people would look after their business by themselves. “Also, on the other side, we thought of what the state could do to ensure they remained in business and we gave some subsidy to the farmers. We said to them that if you want to clear 10 acres, for instance, you bring half of the money, pay those business people having tractors and the government would pay the other half. “We set a target of ploughing 120,000 hectares but the result came out about a week ago and we only met five per cent of that target. It was bad. But the good news is that now we have real data and we know that if we get up to 30 or 50 per cent, we would have moved somewhere. So, you have that option to either invest in tractors or have a model that the private sector can drive.” Sharing the success story of the Fasola Agribusiness Industrial Hub, which has been designated as Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone by the African Development Bank (AfDB), the governor stated that having taken the decision to allow the private sector to drive agribusiness, the government invested heavily on fixing infrastructure. He explained that the big private sector players in the agribusiness sector in the state chose to do business there because of the government’s commitment to infrastructure. “When we went to Fasola, we observed that there had been efforts in the past to revive the Farm Settlement that failed and we said we would upgrade it to a Farm Estate. But there was a problem. The road leading to Fasola, a 34-kilometre stretch of road belonging to the Federal Government, was in a bad state. “We said the first thing we had to do was to fix the infrastructure so that private businesses could come there. So, we fixed the road. “Former President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Amaju Pinnick, is a very big investor in Fasola Agribusiness Hub now and the only thing that brought him there was the infrastructure we have put in place. “It has worked for us that when you fix the infrastructure, private money will come and today, the investment money we put into the infrastructure, when compared to the investments that have been attracted to Fasola, is almost nothing. So, fixing infrastructure is key.” Governors of Borno and Plateau states, Prof. Babagana Zulum and Caleb Muftwang, also shared their experiences in their respective states. In his remarks, the President of Sierra Leone, Dr Bio said that Africa would not be spending over 50 billion dollars annually to import food if its leaders could leverage their political will, technology and requisite funding to ensure food security on the continent. Dr Bio also commended the efforts of the Oyo State governor and his colleagues for their initiatives to drive the economy of their states through agribusiness and charged them to provide more solutions to agricultural challenges in their various states. After the High-Level Panel Discussion, President Bio and his team; Governor Makinde and his team, Plateau State governor, Mr Caleb Muftwang, and his … Read more

Burglars Raid Newcastle Striker Isak’s Home, Steal Car, £68,000 Cash, Jewellery

A gang of burglars raided the home of Newcastle United striker, Alexander Isak, carting away his car, cash, and jewellery worth £68,000 ($87,000), a court heard on Wednesday, according to multiple reports in England. The Swedish international was away from his Northumberland residence when the break-in occurred last April, Newcastle Crown Court was told. Prosecutors revealed that the gang had earlier stolen jewellery and designer items worth over £1 million from a businesswoman and another £100,000 worth of valuables from a different victim in the days leading up to Isak’s burglary. Three members of the gang, all from the same family and residing in Italy, have admitted conspiracy to commit burglary. However, a fourth suspect, Valentino Nikolov, 32, has denied the charges. Prosecuting counsel Dan Cordey told the court that Isak left his house between 4 pm and 10pm on April 4 and returned to discover his home had been ransacked. The burglars reportedly gained entry through a glass door, breaking into the footballer’s TV room before conducting a thorough search. “They took between £5,000 and £10,000 in cash, jewellery worth around £68,000, and his Audi vehicle, which was later found abandoned,” Cordey told the jury. The prosecution described the burglars as a “professional group of travelling criminals” consisting of one woman and three men, all related. “Two men and one woman have pleaded guilty to their involvement,” Cordey added, identifying the remaining suspect as Nikolov, who is representing himself in court and requires an Italian interpreter. The gang reportedly entered the UK via a ferry from Calais to Dover last March, using a motorhome as their base of operations. Nikolov’s brother, Giacomo Nikolov, 28, his sister, Jela Jovanovic, 43, and her son, Charlie Jovanovic, 23, have all pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit burglary. Meanwhile, Isak has been in sensational form for Newcastle this season, netting 22 goals across all competitions for Eddie Howe’s side, who are set to face Liverpool in the League Cup final at Wembley on March 16.
