Ogun Shuts School Over Suspected Gas Leak

  The Ogun State Government has ordered the closure of Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School in Ijebu Ode and launched an investigation following a suspected gas leak that hospitalised about 30 students. The incident occurred shortly after the school assembly on Wednesday, causing panic as a gaseous substance spread across the premises. PUNCH Metro gathered that more than 30 persons, including students and staff members, reportedly struggled to breathe. However, in a statement issued on Thursday, the Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, said Governor Dapo Abiodun had directed security agencies to determine the cause of the incident, noting that the outcome of the investigation would help prevent a recurrence. The governor also ordered the immediate closure of the affected school. “Governor Abiodun has also directed the immediate opening of a Situation Room at the General Hospital, Ijebu-Ode, which will offer free treatment to other students and residents of the impacted areas such as Makalewo, Ogbogbo, Molipa, Igbegba, Ikoto and Oke-Aje market,” the statement added. Residents of areas including Makalewo, Ogbogbo, Molipa, Igbegba, Ikoto and Oke-Aje were advised not to panic, as the government said there was no confirmed security threat linked to the incident. Oresanya said officials of the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency had deployed gas analysers to determine the source and nature of the substance. The statement noted that Oresanya, alongside other government officials, visited the school and the hospital where the victims were receiving treatment. The commissioner added that most of the affected students and teachers were in stable condition. PUNCH Metro gathered that while some insiders initially speculated that the incident may have been caused by a nearby gas explosion, others suggested it originated from a chemical odour in the school laboratory during a practical session. The school’s Vice Principal (Junior School), Adeola Borogun, dismissed reports of an explosion, describing the incident as the presence of a strange chemical smell within the premises. Suspected IPOB fighters Kill Soldier Who Sneaked Out To Attend Party

  A Nigerian Army soldier attached to Operation Udoka has been killed by suspected members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra after sneaking out of his duty post to attend a party in Anambra State. The incident was said to have occurred on the evening of Saturday, May 18, 2025, at the Forward Operating Base in Uli. It was gathered that the soldier had attended the event — a strippers’ party titled “Ladies’ Jamboree” — while wearing his military camouflage uniform. According to a security source, the soldier was discovered missing during a tactical operation. The source said, “It was during a tactical operation that it was discovered the soldier was missing. He was later found to have sneaked out of the base without permission to attend a strippers’ party at a nearby hotel, in uniform. It was there that he was accosted and fatally shot by suspected IPOB/ESN fighters. His lifeless body, along with that of a baby, was later recovered at the scene by troops. “His weapon has been retrieved and is currently in military custody.” Operation Udoka is a Defence Headquarters-led operation and efforts to reach the Director, Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Markus Kangye, were unsuccessful. His phone number was switched off, and he had yet to respond to a message sent to him as of the time of filing this report. The PUNCH reports that the killing is the latest in a series of targeted attacks on security personnel in the South-East region, where IPOB and ESN have been accused of carrying out violent campaigns against state forces.   A 29 years old woman who is recognized as Mrs. Adeniyi Aderonke Sefunmi, has been assaulted and raped by a group of suspected cult group. The unfortunate event of violent attack linked members of a confraternity cult group, occurred On 7th March, 2025 at Oke-Ogun, Owo in Ondo state, around 7.30pm. With the unfortunate incident, the community grapples with fear, support needs, and calls for accountability. In the same incident, the woman father-in-law, Mr. Adeniyi Emmanuel Ajidele sustained a head injury during the chaos, adding to the urgency of medical and legal responses. The victim’s husband, Mr. Adeniyi Oluwatosin Michael, reported the violent incident at the ‘A’ Division Police Station, Owo. He said the violent incident happened in his residence at Wonderful Embassy, Oke-Ogun, Owo in Ondo state, around 7.30pm while he was coming back home and he heard some strange voices coming from his house and had to hide somewhere and witness the whole unfortunate incident. After the perpetrators left, he quickly called for help to take his wife and father to the hospital. The medical emergency services transported the woman and her father in law who were injured and bleeding to the Federal Medical Centre, Owo for treatment. Officers secured the scene and began a preliminary investigation. Detectives are examining witness statements, social-media activity, and alleged group affiliations to determine motive, coordination, and possible charges. The security agencies have asked anyone with information on how to apprehend the perpetrators to come forward. The operatives reaffirmed their commitment to a thorough, transparent investigation and to safeguarding the rights and safety of all involved. They noted that charges would reflect the findings of the case and applicable laws, as the case remains under active investigation. Imo Police Arrest Member Of Suspected Organ trafficking Syndicate, Rescue 19-Year-Old Victim

  Operatives of the Imo State Police Command have dismantled a suspected kidnapping and organ trafficking syndicate in the Douglass area of the state. The spokesperson of the command, ASP Henry Okoye, who disclosed this in a statement said the operation led to the arrest of a 38-year-old suspect, Justine Emmanuel, from Amimo in Ikeduru Local Government Area, and the rescue of a 19-year-old woman, whose name name has been withheld for privacy reasons. “The arrest followed the swift response of vigilant operatives patrol, who observed the syndicate in a blue and white bus forcefully taking the young girl to an undisclosed location where they intended to kill her and harvest her organs,” the PPRO stated. “During the chase, the victim managed to jump from the bus and was immediately rescued. The police pursued the vehicle, which was abandoned, and arrested one suspect while the others escaped into the nearby bush. “The Command is now investigating further to identify other members of the syndicate and determine the full extent of their criminal activities.” He emphasized that the successful rescue demonstrates the Imo State Police Command’s commitment to combating violent crime and ensuring the safety of the community. Woman, 3 Other Suspected Criminals Arrested In Oyo State With N12 Million Cash, Weapons, And Marijuana

  Four individuals, including a woman, on Wednesday apprehended by police in Iwere-Ile, the headquarters of Iwajowa Local Government Area, after being found in possession of N12 million in cash, firearms, and marijuana. The arrests resulted from a collaborative effort between members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) and local police forces. According to sources within the vigilante group, the suspects drew the attention of residents due to their suspicious behavior, which prompted a call to the authorities. An anonymous informant revealed that the suspects had been under surveillance for some time, as community members suspected them of masquerading as charcoal dealers while being involved in criminal activities, including kidnapping. “Their pretense as charcoal dealers raises serious concerns. With proper investigation, we believe criminal activities such as kidnapping in the community can be linked to them,” the source stated. The suspects were taken into custody and have been handed over to the Iwajowa Divisional Police headquarters in Iwere-Ile for further questioning and investigation. Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, confirmed that an investigation is underway. “We are actively looking into this matter. Updates will be provided as the investigation progresses,” he said.
