From Governor Seyi Makinde (GSM) To President Seyi Makinde(PSM): 2027 Perspective

Wale Ajani Governor Seyi Makinde’s performance in Oyo State can be measured through specific indicators: As Nigeria approaches the 2027 presidential election, the political landscape is charged with discussions about potential candidates. Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State stands out as a compelling contender, supported by a track record of governance characterized by empirical data and logical reasoning. His achievements in various sectors, combined with a clear contrast to the current APC administration’s challenges, position him favorably for both the PDP primaries and the general election 1. Infrastructure Development: The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reports a 30% increase in infrastructure projects in Oyo State since Makinde took office in 2019. Key projects include major road reconstructions that have improved connectivity, resulting in an average 15% reduction in travel times. This contrasts sharply with the APC-led federal government, which has faced criticism for a decline in road construction rates, as reported by the World Bank. 2. Healthcare Access: The introduction of the Oyo State Health Insurance Scheme has led to a *”40% increase in healthcare access*”, covering over **300,000 residents**. In comparison, a recent survey indicates that **70% of Nigerians** still lack access to basic healthcare services under the current federal administration, illustrating a significant gap in healthcare provision. 3. Educational Advancements: Data from the National Education Data Survey (NEDS) reveals that Oyo State has improved primary school enrollment rates by **25%** since Makinde’s administration began. Conversely, national data under the APC government shows a **10% decrease** in secondary school enrollment rates, largely due to rising costs and inadequate funding. 4. Economic Sustainability: One of Makinde’s notable achievements is the **timely payment of salaries** to state workers, maintained at **100% compliance** throughout his tenure. This practice contributes to local economic stability, as evidenced by increased consumer spending in the region. In contrast, reports indicate that **40% of state workers** in some regions under APC rule have experienced salary delays of up to three months. 5. Student Support Initiatives: Makinde’s administration has launched scholarship programs benefiting over **5,000 students**, aimed at reducing financial burdens and increasing higher education enrollment by **20%**. In contrast, the APC government has struggled to implement effective nationwide educational support, contributing to rising dropout rates. 6. Human Capital Development: The governor has prioritized vocational training and skill acquisition, with over **10,000 residents** participating in these programs. This focus addresses unemployment and enhances economic productivity, contrasting sharply with the national youth unemployment rate of **33%** under the APC administration. Strategic Political Positioning Makinde’s political strategy within the PDP enhances his candidacy, supported by empirical data: 1. Party Loyalty and Unity: A poll by the African Polling Institute indicates that **65% of PDP members** view Makinde favorably for fostering party unity. In contrast, only **40% of APC members** express confidence in their leadership due to ongoing internal divisions. 2. Regional Influence: The Southwest region accounts for approximately **15% of Nigeria’s total registered voters**. Makinde’s prominence in this region has resulted in a **40% increase in party membership** since 2021. Meanwhile, APC support in the region has declined, with a **20% decrease in voter registration** linked to dissatisfaction with federal governance. 3. Youth Engagement: With over **50% of Nigeria’s population** under 30, engaging youth is critical. Makinde’s youth empowerment programs have led to a **35% increase in youth participation** in governance initiatives. In contrast, a Gallup poll shows that **60% of respondents aged 18-30** express disillusionment with the current administration, largely due to unaddressed unemployment issues. A Vision for Nigeria Makinde’s vision for Nigeria is both ambitious and grounded in empirical reasoning: 1. Economic Diversification: The World Bank projects that Nigeria could achieve **6% annual economic growth** through diversification away from oil dependency. Makinde’s focus on agriculture and technology is supported by studies indicating that investments in these sectors could create millions of jobs. In contrast, the APC’s reliance on oil revenue has resulted in an average GDP growth rate of only **2%** over the past three years. 2. Security and Stability: Rising security challenges require effective leadership. Makinde’s proactive governance has resulted in a **20% decrease in crime rates** in Oyo State. In comparison, the APC government has struggled with a **40% rise in violent incidents** nationwide since 2021, as reported by the Nigeria Security Tracker. 3. Good Governance and Accountability: Transparency International ranks Nigeria poorly in corruption perception, with the country falling to **150th out of 180** in the Corruption Perceptions Index. Makinde’s commitment to transparency and accountability enhances his appeal among citizens disillusioned by corruption and mismanagement. In conclusion, as the 2027 presidential election approaches, Governor Seyi Makinde’s combination of empirical governance achievements, strategic political positioning, and an inspiring vision for Nigeria positions him as a formidable candidate for both the PDP primaries and the general election. His ability to connect with the electorate through data-driven policies and transparent governance establishes him not just as a candidate but as a viable alternative to the current administration’s challenges. In a time when the nation seeks transformative leadership, Seyi Makinde stands ready to answer that call, representing the aspirations of millions of Nigerians.

Hon Olayinka Segelu Celebrates Teachers On World Teachers Day

By Adeleke Maria   An Ibadan-born ICT consultant, entrepreneur and Chieftain of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) based in Germany, Hon. Olayinka Oladimeji Segelu, has doffed his cap for teachers around the world for the significant role they play in educational growth and advancement. In a statement issued to applaud teachers worldwide on Saturday in commemoration of the World Teachers Day, Hon. Olayinka Segelu, a governorship aspirant for Oyo 2027, said: “On this World Teacher’s Day, I extend my heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to our dedicated teachers across Oyo State and beyond. Today, we celebrate the invaluable contributions of educators who shape the minds and futures of our children, nurturing them with knowledge, guidance, and wisdom. “As I reflect on this special day, I am reminded of my late mother, Late Mrs. R.T. Oladimeji, who devoted 33 years of her life to teaching. She served with unwavering commitment as the Head Mistress at St. Paul Primary School in Yanbule, Basorun/Ashi, Ibadan where she positively impacted countless students and families. Her legacy embodies the essence of teaching: a calling that transforms lives and communities. “Teachers hold a unique place in our society, deserving of our utmost respect and appreciation. Their dedication not only influences the classroom but also extends into the hearts and minds of the students they teach. I have profound respect for the sacrifices and hard work they put into forging a brighter future for the next generation. “As your gubernatorial aspirant under the banner of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), I pledge to continue prioritizing the welfare of our teachers and to uphold their esteemed position in our society. Their commitment to education is the bedrock of our development. Therefore, it is crucial that we support and empower them. “Let us recognize and honor the teachers who inspire and educate us every day. Together, we can ensure they receive the recognition and support they truly deserve. “Happy World Teacher’s Day!”

2024 Teachers’ Day: Makinde Commits To N70,000 Minimum Wage For Teachers

By Adeleke Maria   Oyo State Governor ‘Seyi Makinde has announced that his administration will begin paying the N70,000 minimum wage after resolving the matter of consequential salary adjustments. This was as the governor announced the extension of the N25,000 wage award to workers and N15,000 wage award to pensioners by another three months. The extension, the governor noted, is to cover the period that the negotiation on the consequential adjustment will ast, noting that the payment of the wage award will stop upon the conclusion of negotiations to effectively implement the minimum wage. Governor Makinde made this announcement on Saturday during the 2024 World Teachers’ Day Celebration with the theme: “Valuing Teachers’ Voices Towards a New Social Contract for Education,” held at the NUT (ENDWELL) Model College Sports Complex, Owode Housing Estate, Apata, Ibadan. He said: “On the minimum wage, negotiation will start next week and we will pay the N70,000 minimum wage. But the consequential adjustment is about to be negotiated. The NLC and our team will sit down to discuss it.” Governor Makinde, who lauded teachers in the state for their massive support to him during the last election and their immeasurable contributions to building the state, said his government will continue to prioritise the welfare of teachers and all civil servants in the state so that they would continue to be productive. Noting that education remains one of the major pillars of his government, the governor promised to fix more education infrastructure so that teachers can continue to impart knowledge in a conducive environment in order to guarantee a better future for the state. “I want to say kudos to the teachers. Everywhere I went during the campaign, you mobilised yourselves and supported us wholeheartedly. So, I appreciate you and I say thank you. “We are going through challenges as a country. We have issues of minimum wage and fuel price but I want to appeal to you to say that tough times don’t last but tough people do. We will outlast these challenges we are faced with.” The governor added, “Any country that wants to develop must educate her people. “So, for us in Oyo State, we will continue to specially look after our teachers, because they are dealing with our future. “You teachers, you have to be put where you belong. So, I thank you for your support and dedication to duty. We still have a long way to go. “When we came in, with the UBEC grant and matching fund we used to give them, we were spending about N3 billion every year on infrastructure. So, for the past five years, we have done about N15 billion but it is not enough – just like a drop in the ocean. “The gap we have to fill, when we did the analysis a few years ago, it was around N40 billion but I can tell you now that it will be close to N70 billion. “If we continue to spend N3 billion yearly for the next 15 years, we still won’t cover the gap on ground. So apart from SUBEB, we will have education intervention funds of a minimum of N10 billion every year towards bridging the infrastructural gap in education. “And of course we will employ more teachers and we will put them in a conducive learning environment that would guarantee better outcomes for our students.” The governor, while commissioning a block of 10 classrooms built by the NUT at the NUT Model School, maintained that his administration’s commitment to fixing inner roads remained on course and that it will work on inner roads within the Owode Housing Estate. Earlier in his welcome address, the NUT State Chairman, Comrade Raji Ismail, thanked the governor for his “unprecedented achievements in the education sector and for being mindful of teachers’ welfare through his encouragement of career progression for primary school teachers, regular payment of salaries, promotions, payment of leave bonuses and healthcare insurance, among others.” Also in his goodwill message, the chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in the state, Comrade Kayode Martins, assured that the governor will do everything necessary to implement the minimum wage as expected.

Ogun Government Donates N200 Million To Borno State In Response To Flood Disaster

The Ogun State Government has donated sum of N200 million to the Borno State Government following the devastating flood that recently ravaged the state, destroying property and displacing thousands of residents. It will be recalled that Governor Dapo Abiodun had earlier sent messages of condolence to the people and government of Borno State, commending the state government for its prompt response alongside interventions from the federal government. Announcing the donation on Saturday, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Strategy, Hon. According to reports, at least 414,000 people have been displaced, and 30 lives lost in the devastating flood in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

10th Assembly Commends Tinubu For Correcting Age-Long Discrimination Of National Honours

The Speaker of the House of Representatives Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Ph.D, has applauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for correcting the mistakes of the past by according the House its constitutional status in offering the Speaker with the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON). President Tinubu had during his Independence Day Anniversary address to Nigerians on Tuesday, October 1, announced the conferment of the Commander of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (CFR) on the Speaker and GCON on the President of the Senate and the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN). On Wednesday, the House, through a motion by Hon. Philip Agbese and 249 others, called on the President to correct past mistakes by giving the House the same status as the Senate in the conferment of the National Honours. The House had decried the discrimination it had suffered over the years not just regarding the National Honours but also in some quarters, where a segment of Nigerians referred to it as the “lower chamber” even when the constitution places both chambers of the National Assembly on the same pedestal. Following the resolution of the House, President Tinubu on Friday night through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, announced the withdrawal of the CFR honour and conferment of the GCON on the Speaker. Mr. Onanuga said, “President Tinubu was persuaded by the House of Representatives position and has decided to remedy the historical error and oversight. Thus, he has decided to upgrade the Speaker to GCON from CFR, by the National Order of Precedence.” Speaker Abbas, in a press statement issued through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Musa Abdullahi Krishi, said President Tinubu has demonstrated good leadership in his actions. “I thank President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for correcting the mistakes by past administrations of not according to the House its constitutional recognition. The President has once again demonstrated his democratic credentials of being a true democrat, an objective, and a listening leader. “With this development, Nigeria and indeed the world, now know that the House of Representatives of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has the same status as its sister chamber, the Senate, and is treated as such. “I thank the President for heeding the voices of reasoning from the House and other well-meaning Nigerians,” the Speaker said. Speaker Abbas equally congratulated the 10th House of Representatives “for this historic achievement.” He thanked his colleagues for rising against the age-long discrimination of the House, which he said has been corrected through their efforts.

Nigerians To Process, Obtain Passports From Home – Tunji-Ojo

Nigerians will soon be able to process and receive their passports from the comfort of their homes, eliminating the need to physically visit passport processing centers, according to the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo. However, this new initiative will initially apply only to Nigerians aged 18 and above and those seeking the renewal of expired passports. Fresh applicants will still be required to appear in person to register their biometrics at passport centers. Dr. Tunji-Ojo announced this development at a stakeholders’ forum in Abuja, where the contactless passport processing App was unveiled. The initiative is part of an effort to streamline passport issuance and reduce the burdens often faced by Nigerians, both at home and abroad. The minister emphasized that the new process is designed to eliminate exploitation by middlemen, who often create unnecessary obstacles to extort applicants. The contactless passport processing project is a collaboration between two Nigerian firms, Irish Smart Technology and New World, which have been test-running the system over the last nine months. The new technology aims to make passport issuance more seamless, with the App covering every requirement for obtaining a Nigerian passport. Tunji-Ojo also revealed that beginning in April next year, passport production will be centralized in Nigeria. As part of this, immigration attachés in foreign missions will no longer be authorized to approve visa issuance, a step aimed at streamlining the process and improving efficiency. In addition, the minister announced that the President has approved the retention of 50% of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) internally generated revenue, enabling the service to enhance its operations and reduce delays in passport processing. To further strengthen national security, the government is also building 32 forward operational bases across the country to support the NIS in its duties. The Comptroller-General of the NIS, Mrs. Kemi Nandap, noted that the contactless passport issuance system will not only reduce the inconvenience associated with physical processing but also enhance the security of the Nigerian passport in line with international standards.

How Soldiers Killed My husband, Donated His Body To Varsity’s Lab For Experiment – 20-yr-Old Widow

September 7, 2024 was a black Saturday for the family of Mr David Achinya in Taraku, a community in Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State. It was particularly so for Mrs Doosuur Achinya, a 20-year-old widow whose husband, Terhile Timothy Achinya, was cut down in his prime. On that day, some soldiers attached to the security outfit Operation Whirld Stroke, in Lafia, Nasarawa State capital, tortured to death the final year student of Isa Mustapha Agwai Polytechnic (IMAP), Lafia, after he was picked up by the military around 2pm on September 6 on his way to the examination hall. A friend and course mate of the late student, Olagundoye Favor, had given him a ride on a motorcycle on their way to school when the military personnel picked them up for reasons that remain yet a mystery, took them to their detention facility and subjected them to serious torture in the process of which Achinya died. Achinya, a student in the Department of Mechanical Engineering was billed to graduate on September 9, but his dream of becoming an engineer was aborted two days before it materialised. The development has ruined the life of his widow, Doosuur, and their two kids aged one and three. Embarrassed at the death of the student in their custody, the military officers led by one Captain Kaakara allegedly tried to deposit the corpse of the late student at Dalhatu Arab Specialist Hospital Lafia, but the authorities of the hospital rejected the corpse when the military officers could not produce a police report. Olagundoye Favor was however admitted at the hospital and treated for the internal wounds he sustained from the soldiers’ beating. Following the rejection of Achinya’s corpse at Dalhatu Arab Specialist Hospital, our correspondent gathered, the soldiers decided to take it to the laboratory of the Anatomy Department of the Federal University of Lafia (FULAFIA) where corpses are used for practicals by medical students. Surprisingly, the lab attendants of the University accepted the corpse for their students’ experiments without demanding to know the circumstances surrounding it. Doosuur, who has yet to come to terms with becoming a widow when she spoke with our correspondent, said she could not believe that all the hope that she and her husband had nursed about being successful in life had been dashed by his sudden death. “He was left with just a paper to complete his engineering programme when the soldiers killed him,” she said. “He had called me in the early morning of September 6 as he was set to go for the exams. “He spoke to his two kids and assured them that in the next three days, he would sit his final and join them to celebrate his graduation. “Little did I know that I would never see him again in my life “Every day, his two kids ask after him, saying, ‘Mummy, when is Daddy coming back? Not knowing they will never see him again. “My life is ruined and there is no hope for me again. The military officers have finished me. “Killing my husband for no justification and leaving me behind with these little kids is too much for me to bear. “Life will never be the same again.” She said Achinya’s ambition was to complete his OND in Mechanical Engineering and proceed for his HND, but his dream of becoming an engineer was cut short by the errant soldiers. “We could not achieve our dreams together as death snatched him from me unannounced,” she said. “I wept bitterly because of the enormous things we planned to do after his graduation. “I am depressed. The military officers have deprived me of peace of mind at the young age of 20, and I won’t have peace of mind for the remaining period of my life. “The killing of my innocent husband was a devastating blow. “I have been waking up in the middle of the night to weep bitterly since my husband died. What is the future of his two kids? “Who is going to train them? Who will take care of them? I have no means of livelihood. “All along, our hope was that he would complete his OND and look for something doing before furthering his education.” The distraught widow says all she wants is justice for her late husband. “I want the soldiers who killed my husband arrested and made to face the law. He did not do any wrong thing to them,” she insisted. The murdered student also left behind aged parents who are also crying for justice in respect of the gruesome murder of their son. The father of the deceased student, David Achinya, who described the incident as unfortunate, called on the authorities to make sure that the military officers involved are made to face the law. FULAFIA faces public scrutiny Although the Federal University Lafia (FULAFIA) was not involved in the torture and death of the student, the institution faces an uphill task to exonerate itself from the entire episode for the simple reason that its Anatomy Lab accepted an unauthorised corpse without any written document. The Taraku community in Benue State strongly believes that the action of the lab attendant of the Anatomy Department was meant to prevent traces and create imaginary mystery. The late Achinya, until his gruesome murder at the hands of the soldiers was a graduating Mechanical Engineering student of Isa Agwai polytechnic, Lafia. The Nation investigation revealed that the deceased student was arrested on Friday September 6, tortured and killed on September 7. In a desperate move to cover up for the crime, his killers took his corps to the Dalhatu Arab Specialist Hospital Lafia where it was rejected because of their refusal to write a statement. Hence they donated the corps to the anatomy department at the Federal University of Lafia. Investigation revealed that the deceased was whisked away by the military personnel operating under the auspices of Operation Wild Stroke with a certain Captain Kaakara … Read more

Ogsiec Urges Political Parties To Submit Qualified Candidates For The LG Polls.

Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC), has called on political parties to present the best of their candidates with credible credentials for the forthcoming polls in November 2024. Chairman of the Commission, Mr. Babatunde Osibodu stated this at the ongoing screening exercise for Councillorship candidates, at the Commission’s headquarters in Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta. According to the Chairman, “the screening exercise is going on well, political parties have presented their candidates for screening and everyone is being attended to”. He noted that the Commission would conclude the exercise this week, saying any spillover of candidates for both Chairmanship and Councilorship would be given consideration in the following week, pointing out that “if for any reason, a candidate is disqualified, the party would have to present another candidate for screening”. The electoral umpire implored political parties to cooperate with OGSIEC in order to have a seamless election, while charging the youths to participate in politics by joining political parties of their choice and be part of decision-making process for the benefits of the good people of the state. In their separate remarks, Councilorship candidates, Mrs. Oluranti Subair from Iju ward 7 and Mr. Ebenezer Adesanmi from Ifo ward 3, commended OGSIEC for the smooth conduct of the screening exercise, saying the process had been hitch-free

Governor Seyi Makinde Beats Own First Term Record

Governor Seyi Makinde has done more for the people of Oyo State than during his first tenure in office. This has allayed the historical phobia people usually have of second term governors and their performances. In a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, 335.19km of roads have been constructed since 2019, out of which 144.37km were constructed in the first four years and 190.82km commissioned in just 17 months into the second term. The Commissioner said the ongoing 110km circular road project has its bridges and interchanges on the South East Segment of the circular road completed with a projection of 100% delivery in 24 months. The circular road will make Oyo State most accessible to all road networks in the Federation. The Commissioner said that earlier this week, the Civil Service Commission announced the recruitment of 791 workers into the Mainstream. He however recalled that 692 Education Officers, 60 Environmental Health Officers, 19 Lands Officers, 30 Lawyers have earlier been recruited into the Mainstream of the Oyo State Civil Service. “If the 791 new recruits are added, the Seyi Makinde administration would have broken the employment record of the State by recruiting 1,592 into the Service, half way into its second term,” he said. It would be recalled that at a leadership retreat held for top government officials on October 4th 2023, shortly after his re-election, Governor Seyi Makinde promised that his second term in office will witness more accelerated growth in all sectors than in his first term with people-friendly policies. The Governor at the retreat warned members of his cabinet that the people of Oyo state will neither take excuses nor stories from his administration and therefore gave them a matching order to perform better than his first term achievements. The Commissioner said that before the end of this month, 7,000 Primary School Teachers out of the 46,000 that sat for the Computer Based Test, will receive their employment letters. “The 7,000 new teachers being recruited is obviously more than the 5,000 Secondary School Teachers the Seyi Makinde administration employed in his first term,” he said. Gov. Makinde’s efforts since 2019 has repositioned the Ibadan airport, now Samuel Ladoke Akintola airport, recently upgraded to International status which will make Oyo State the Commercial Hub of the Southwest. Also the Fasola industrial estate has become the transformative initiative of Governor Makinde in Agribusiness and currently has 10 Industries on the 1,100 hectares farm that has become the destination for private local and International investors.
