Former Senate President Adolphus Wabara Denied Job Slot By FCC Due To Mandate Constraints

The Federal Character Commission (FCC) has issued a clarification regarding the denial of a job placement for former Senate President Adolphus Wabara, stating that the request fell outside its operational mandate. This comes in light of Wabara’s allegations that the FCC refused job placements for constituents in his wards, claiming that his efforts were hindered due to his unwillingness to provide monetary inducements. Wabara expressed his frustration, asserting, “You won’t believe that up till now, nothing has been done for the simple reason that I have not dropped any money and that they cannot even ask me to drop money.” In a statement released by the FCC’s Director of Public Affairs and Communication, Dr. Chuks Okoli, the commission clarified that Wabara was informed during a March 2023 meeting with FCC Executive Chairman Dr. Muheeba Dankaka that the FCC does not act as a recruitment agency. The Commission emphasized its primary role is to monitor recruitment processes across various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies to ensure fairness and equity. The FCC challenged Wabara to substantiate his claims, urging the public to disregard his accusations of a “bribe for FCC job slot.” The statement highlighted that Dr. Dankaka has maintained a commitment to the principles of Federal Character in all recruitment practices since taking office. “To address this serious allegation, we ask the former Senate President to provide the names of individuals who purportedly solicited bribes from him for job placements for his family. We strongly encourage the public to dismiss his unsubstantiated claims of bribery in relation to FCC job placements,” the statement read.

BREAKING: State Government Halts House Marking And Demolition On Circular Road

The Oyo State Government has directed officials from the Ministry of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development to cease marking and demolishing buildings beyond a 150-meter boundary along the Senator Rashidi Ladoja Circular Road. This announcement was made during a press briefing on Friday by the Commissioner for Lands, Housing, and Urban Development, Mr. Williams Akin-Funmilayo, alongside Professor Dahud Kehinde Shangodoyin, Commissioner for Public Works and Transport. In his address, Akin-Funmilayo emphasized the administration’s commitment to the welfare of its citizens and reassured affected homeowners that they would receive adequate compensation. The government has commenced an enumeration process to assess properties in the corridor impacted by the road project. Contradicting claims that Governor Seyi Makinde had extended the setback from 150 meters to 500 meters, Akin-Funmilayo clarified that no new land acquisitions had occurred since the governor’s administration began in 2019. He outlined that the original 150-meter boundary was established in August 2006 under Ladoja’s government, and an additional 350-meter setback was later gazetted by the late Governor Abiola Ajimobi in 2018. Akin-Funmilayo reassured residents that the government aims to minimize disruptions during road construction.“ While some buildings may need to be cleared, we assure affected homeowners that proper compensation will be provided. The marking of buildings is primarily for enumeration purposes, to freeze ongoing developments,” he stated. Addressing concerns about potential demolitions, he clarified, “The marking does not imply demolition. It serves two purposes: to identify existing structures before construction begins and to ensure those eligible for compensation are documented. We’ve observed new constructions despite warnings, and those developments may not be compensated.” The commissioner also highlighted that the state intends to preserve existing settlements within the 150-meter buffer, ensuring they are not removed. He invited residents to support government initiatives, reassured them of ongoing communication, and reiterated that, for the time being, no buildings beyond the 150-meter mark would be marked or demolished. Residents, represented by Prince Niyi Fasoye, expressed hopes for favorable engagement with Governor Makinde’s administration regarding the ongoing developments.

NAFDAC Shuts Maiduguri Market After Discovery Of Sun-Dried Drugs Post-Flood

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has ordered the immediate closure of the Gomboru drug market in Maiduguri following severe flooding that submerged the area and contaminated the drugs sold within the market. In a statement posted on its official X handle, NAFDAC disclosed that the decision was made after reports surfaced that contaminated drugs, which had been washed and sun-dried for resale, were being sold at the market. “After the recent flooding in Maiduguri that submerged the Gomboru drug market where contaminated drugs were washed and sun-dried for resale, the @DGatNAFDAC ordered the immediate closure of the market to conduct a thorough shop-to-shop removal of these compromised drugs,” the agency wrote. The flooding, which ravaged Maiduguri, was triggered by the rupture of the Alau dam on the Ngadda River, located 20 kilometers (12 miles) south of the city. The floodwaters claimed at least 30 lives and displaced 400,000 residents, leaving large parts of the city and surrounding areas in devastation. NAFDAC’s intervention is aimed at safeguarding public health by preventing the sale and consumption of contaminated drugs. The agency has mobilized teams to inspect the market and ensure the removal of all compromised pharmaceutical products.

UNICEF Request Olubadan’s Support Towards Protection Of Children’s Rights

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), has solicited the support of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin towards protection of rights of children in the country. This appeal was made during a visit to the paramount ruler of Ibadan land on Wednesday, September 18, by a delegation of the United Nations’ agency, according to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Olubadan, Mr Solomon Olugbemiga Ayoade. The Olubadan, who spoke through the Maye Olubadan, Senior Chief Rasheed Olalekan Alabi, at the Oke Aremo palace of the monarch, stated that the UNICEF team made a right choice to make the Olubadan a reference point of contact to other traditional rulers. The monarch, while speaking further, cited the importance of Ibadanland, being the home of many firsts in the socio-economic, political, educational, information, health care delivery and cultural development of Nigeria. “Ibadan is the home of firsts in Nigeria. Ibadan has been at the forefront of political, information, social and economic development in the country. “To mention just a few, the first teaching hospital, University College Hospital (UCH), was established in Ibadan; the first university in Nigeria, University of Ibadan was established in 1948; and the first television station in Africa was established in Ibadan. “Thus, the aims and objectives of UNICEF towards reduction of maternal mortality, infant mortality and other social and health problems will be realised now that you have visited the Olubadan of Ibadanland.” Earlier in his address, the UNICEF team leader, Mohammed Okorie, declared that the visit became necessary in order to solicit the support of the Olubadan in sensitising, mobilising and enlightening parents and guardians in ensuring that the rights of children are protected. “Every child’s right must be protected. Ibadan and Oyo State residents are not accessing UNICEF services as expected, thus the need to appeal to the Olubadan, the Olubadan-in-Council, Chiefs, Mogajis and Baales to sensitise and mobilise their people to make use of the facilities and opportunities provided by UNICEF. “We must ensure that pregnant mothers attend ante natal care for safe delivery. Also, the care of elderly persons and facilitating financial assistance to secondary health care institutions and other hospitals in general whenever the need arises are key objectives,” he said. In a related development, the Ibadan North East Local Government traditional council also paid a courtesy visit to the Olubadan same day. Senior Chief Emiola Rafiu Onideure, who spoke on behalf of the traditional council, described the Olubadan as a peace-loving person. According to him, “We are here to celebrate our monarch, His Imperial Majesty Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin for several reasons. If we want to open the book of our father, we will have many chapters and pages. Baba is a peace-loving person; very prudent. “Baba has always been a good man to everybody. He is a good father to all. The short period he used in Ibadan North East as Chairman of traditional council, we enjoyed him. He even deserves more recognition. We just had to visit him to show him that we appreciate him.”

Oyo Governor, Makinde Launches Upgrade Of Ibadan Airport To International Standards

By Adeleke Maria   Oyo State Governor ‘Seyi Makinde held a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday to initiate the upgrade of Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport in Alakia, Ibadan. The project aims to enhance the airport’s facilities to international standards, promising to connect the state to global markets upon its completion. The governor maintained that the upgraded airport would also improve the ease of doing business, bring in investments in agribusiness, manufacturing and technology sectors and position Ibadan as a true regional business hub. Governor Makinde stated this at the airport in Alakia, during the groundbreaking ceremony for the upgrade of the facility to an international airport, noting the project had been awarded to Messrs Craneburg at the cost of N41 billion. He promised to do everything possible to ensure that the project is delivered in the next 12 months. This was as the governor assured residents of the state that the Presumptive Tax Law recently passed by the Oyo State House of Assembly will not be implemented at this time due to the general hardship facing the people, stating that his government will only fight poverty and not poor people. He said: “We took an important decision yesterday at the Executive Council Meeting. We know times are hard and Nigerians are hungry and angry. But I hope this will not boil over. But in Oyo State, we have control over what we can do here. I can see that the House has passed the Presumptive Tax Bill. Yes, it came from us because if we need to expand economy, we need to generate money. I will sign it into law but we will not implement it for now.” He said his administration would only promote policies that would leave money in the pockets of the people of Oyo State so that they could spend same on areas important to them. While stressing that his government would not do anything to deliberately hurt the people, Makinde said the government had paid due compensation to land owners in Ajia, who lost their property to the new Air Force Base being constructed in the area. According to the governor, the decision to upgrade the airport was taken based on data and logic, adding that it is a strategic investment that includes a first and second phase that will culminate into the upgrading of the airport, the runway, airfield lighting, terminal and other critical facilities. He said: “Let me specially thank the members of the committee, who worked on the project in the last six weeks to make it possible for the official groundbreaking ceremony to take place today. “Some people do not think that upgrading this airport at this time is a good idea, but the decision to upgrade this airport to international standard is based on data and logic. In the next twelve months, this project will be delivered. I will push the envelope”. “This airport will connect Oyo State to a global market. It will improve ease of doing business, bringing investments into agribusiness, manufacturing and technology sectors and positioning Ibadan as a true regional business hub.” The governor listed MRO and cargo facilities as some of the features the upgraded airport would parade, describing the project as a strategic investment that would be delivered on time and within budget. He added, “This is the first phase; the groundbreaking is the first phase. The second phase is the terminal itself. Once we do the runway and air-field lighting, we will have the terminal and they will be delivered about the same time. We don’t want to wait. After this groundbreaking, the committee will be working to kick-start the process that would ensure that complementary projects within the airport are also going to start. “I want to congratulate Craneburg for winning this bid. They gave us the lowest bid and they are working on the Circular Road, so we know what they are capable of doing. We gave them an impossible deadline on the Alao-Akala Memorial Highway and it was delivered.” The governor also used the opportunity of the event to commend the Deputy Governor, Barr. Lawal for acting as governor when he was away on vacation, while also lauding residents of the state for supporting him. Governor Makinde, who called on residents of Edo State to support the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Saturday’s governorship election in the state, Mr Asue Ighodalo, said the candidate would deliver the goods to residents of the state. He equally noted that he and the Osun State governor are solidly behind the Amb. Umar Ilya Damagum-led National Working Committee of the PDP, saying: “I am also glad that our Acting National Chairman and members of his National Working Committee are here. I was reading yesterday that there was another meeting in Bauchi. Let me say clearly that we are 100 per cent in support of the Damagun-led NWC. Whatever decision you take, we will support you to reposition our party. “Let me also say this; even if we have issues within ourselves, we have an important election on Saturday. So, we should just rally round and deliver our candidate to give real hope to our people.” Earlier, Osun State Governor, Senator Nurudeen Ademola Adeleke congratulated Governor Makinde on the groundbreaking ceremony for the upgrade of the airport, describing him as a man of vision and a passionate agent of development in Oyo State. He also saluted Makinde’s drive of leaving behind a good legacy of impactful innovation and infrastructure revolution to the people of his state. In his welcome remarks, Air Commodore Victor Ajiboye, who is the Commander National Air Defence Corps, Nigerian Air Force, Ikeja, Lagos and also a member of the Ibadan Airport Upgrade Committee, assured that upon the completion of the project, Ibadan would be better positioned as an economic hub in the South-West Nigeria. The representative of the Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola family, Chief Akinwunmi Akintola, thanked Governor Makinde for remembering and honouring the family with the … Read more

Three Marketers To Import 141 Million-Litres Of Petrol

On Monday, the NNPC announced it would sell petrol sourced from the Dangote refinery for over N1,000 per liter in the northern regions. Its spokesperson, Olufemi Soneye, disclosed in a statement titled, ‘NNPC Ltd Releases Estimated Pump Prices of PMS from Dangote Refinery Based on September 2024 Pricing’. Soneye explained that the price may go for as high as N1,019/litre in Borno State and N999.22 in Abuja, Sokoto, Kano, and others. In Oyo, Rivers, and other areas in the South, it will be N960/litre. The lowest price, according to an infographic released by the NNPC, is N950 in Lagos and its environs. Reacting to this on Tuesday, a major marketer confirmed that the deregulation of the downstream sector had fully set in, stressing that three dealers are expecting their products (PMS) this week. The marketer, who spoke to our correspondent in confidence due to lack of authorisation to speak on the matter, stated that each vessel would bring in about 35,000 metric tonnes of PMS. This means the three dealers are expecting about 105,000 metric tonnes of PMS this week, all things being equal. Going by the conversion rate of 1,341 litres to one metric tonne, it, therefore, implies that the marketers are bringing in about 141 million litres of petrol. “Most marketers often import three parcels for this kind of transaction and the lowest parcel is about 35,000 metric tonnes of PMS. Now, because of how the business is run, you see marketers bringing in between two and three parcels. “This week, we expect about three marketers to bring in products. However, some of these imports are not cast in stone, in the sense that the influence of many regulatory authorities is still there. So it is not that you will just go and bring in products and you then start to sell them. “The regulators, such as the NMDPRA, have to look at the quality, flash points and so many other things that should be taken into consideration before the product comes in. And when it lands, they will take samples and check them in their labs,” the marketer stated. On whether the three parcels of each of the marketers would land this week, the dealer replied, “All of them are not going to bring in the three parcels at the same time. They bring in a parcel first and later, say in one week time or so, another parcel comes in. All these imports have storage implications. “It is not something you do in a day. You can’t bring in one vessel today (Tuesday) and you bring in another one on Saturday. No, it is not done like that. This is not the importation of 20,000 or 30,000 litres of PMS.” When contacted, the spokesperson of the NMDPRA, George Ene-Ita, said marketers with approved import licenses were free to import PMS, but stressed that the products must be subjected to three major tests by the agency. “The products must be subjected to our testing protocols at the ports. The products must conform to stipulated standards before we give them the authorisation to offload to their terminals. “Also, before the smaller vessels bring it further inland to Nigeria our people will fly to the place to see the product and carryout some tests to ensure the right specification is upheld. “Tests are also done at the products’ origins. And when the products come in, before they are released to the market, further tests would be conducted to ensure that they meet the specifications,” he stated.
