Remi Tinubu Donates ₦5m to Anambra Farmers Under Renewed Hope Initiative

First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has donated ₦5 million to beneficiaries of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) Agricultural Support Programme in Anambra State to help strengthen their businesses. The First Lady presented the financial support through the wife of the Anambra State Governor, Nonye Soludo, who handed the money to the beneficiaries at the Light House in Awka. Soludo disclosed the development in a statement issued by her media aide, Daniel Ezeigwe, on Monday. According to her, Tinubu approved the donation after beneficiaries of last year’s RHI Agricultural Support Programme warmly received her during her visit to Anambra State last Thursday. The beneficiaries had also presented a token of support for President Bola Tinubu and his administration ahead of the 2027 general election. The statement said the First Lady described the gesture as unprecedented and decided to reciprocate by providing the beneficiaries with ₦5 million to further support their businesses. Soludo said: “Following the warm reception she received from beneficiaries of last year’s ‘Renewed Hope Initiative Agricultural Support Programme’ during her visit to Anambra State, the First Lady of Nigeria, Her Excellency, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, has gifted them ₦5 million to further support and strengthen their businesses. “The beneficiaries had, during her official visit to Anambra last Thursday, presented a token of support for the President and his administration ahead of 2027.” RHI Targets Food Security and Vulnerable Households The Renewed Hope Initiative Agricultural Support Programme seeks to support vulnerable households and improve access to nutritious food, particularly for nursing mothers and people facing food insecurity. Soludo described the donation as another reminder of the importance of kindness and appreciation. She also expressed appreciation to the First Lady for the financial support and her continued commitment to supporting beneficiaries of the agricultural programme.

UK Man Admits Drugging and Raping Wife for Two Decades

A British man in his 60s has pleaded guilty to drugging and raping his wife over a period spanning more than two decades, in the latest UK case involving drug-facilitated sexual abuse. The man, who cannot be named to protect his wife’s identity, entered the guilty plea on Monday at a court in northwest England. He had previously admitted to other sexual offences against his wife. He was scheduled to stand trial alongside 12 other men accused of conspiring to sexually abuse the woman while she was unconscious. The 12 co-defendants, aged between 28 and 73, deny the allegations. A 13th man previously pleaded guilty to conspiring to drug and rape the victim. On Monday, the husband admitted to 60 offences dating back to 2004, including administering a substance to his wife with the intention of stupefying or overpowering her. The other defendants include a paramedic and a former football coach. They are expected to stand trial at the criminal court in Manchester in the coming weeks. Latest UK Case Involving Drug-Facilitated Sexual Abuse The case adds to a growing number of UK criminal cases involving drug-facilitated sexual abuse (DFSA), in which perpetrators use drugs or other substances to render victims unconscious or unable to resist sexual abuse. Global attention on the crime increased following the high-profile case of Dominique Pelicot in France. Pelicot drugged and raped his then-wife, Gisele, for nearly a decade while allowing other men to sexually abuse her. In another UK case last week, a London man pleaded guilty to encouraging other men in an online group chat to sexually abuse their unconscious partners and share images of the abuse. Meanwhile, another man is due to receive his sentence in central England later this week after pleading guilty in July to 32 sexual offences against his girlfriend while she was allegedly drugged or asleep. The Manchester proceedings are expected to continue in the coming weeks. AFP

Osun Shooting: Accord Chieftain Buried as Police Recover Second Corpse

The Osun State Police Command has recovered another corpse from the Mayfair Motor Park in Ile-Ife, bringing the number of deaths linked to Sunday’s shooting at the park to two. The police confirmed the development on Monday as the remains of Olalekan Oyeyemi, a chieftain of the Accord Party in Osun State popularly known as ‘Emir Ajagungbade,’ were laid to rest at his newly completed residence in the Agunbelewo area of Osogbo according to traditional rites. Emir died on Sunday after gunmen opened fire during a clash involving him and a group led by another National Union of Road Transport Workers leader identified by his nickname, Sibi, at the Mayfair Motor Park. A video that circulated on social media after the incident showed Emir lying face down in a pool of blood inside a vehicle. Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, later confirmed Emir’s death in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, and directed the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Zungura, to identify and arrest those responsible. Emir’s death has been linked to moves by some members of the transport union to install him as the next Osun State chairman of the NURTW. Police Recover Second Corpse Providing an update on the incident, the Osun State Police Command spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, told journalists that the police had recovered another body from the motor park. “The governor has decided that the park should not operate. The park has not been operating. A corpse was also recovered by the police, and it has been deposited at the morgue. “The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for more investigation. Those being mentioned in connection with the crime, they should go to the nearest Police station to report themselves rather than going to social media to defend themselves. The Commissioner of Police has promised that all those involved will be apprehended and face the law, irrespective of who they are.” Meanwhile, traditionalists conducted Emir’s burial rites in the presence of close family members and priests. His associates, who accompanied his remains from the Osun State University Teaching Hospital in Osogbo, waited outside the premises while the traditional burial rites took place. Hoodlums Attack Hospital Workers Before the hospital released Emir’s remains, suspected hoodlums believed to be associates of the deceased attacked two members of staff after discovering that the workers were recording them with their phones. Our correspondent, who visited the hospital to monitor developments, later observed the arrival of additional police vehicles carrying security operatives. Their presence helped restore calm at the facility. Commissioner Denies Endorsing Emir as NURTW Chairman Meanwhile, the Osun State Commissioner for Transportation, Sesan Oyedele, has denied claims that he summoned NURTW leaders to his residence in Modakeke on Sunday and told them that the state government had endorsed Emir as the next chairman of the union. Two NURTW leaders in Ile-Ife, identified as Gbadagesin and Kazeem Akeem, had made the allegation in videos circulating on social media. Speaking with PUNCH Online, Oyedele dismissed the claim and said the individuals who spoke about the meeting were not present when the issue of the NURTW chairmanship came up. “The person who did the video was not at the meeting I had with them. Had he been there, he would have known that what I told them was not what he said in that video. I was not in the meeting they had in Osogbo last week. After that meeting, which involved transport union members from various branches, they called me on Thursday and said they wanted to come and see me. I told them to come to my office on Monday (today), but they said they could come to my house. “They came around 9:00 a.m. on Sunday. When they got to my house, they told me that they had all agreed that Olalekan Emir should be the next chairman, and they wanted me to support them. I told them that since that was what they wanted, I would present their case before the governor, the Chief of Staff and others when he gets back to the state. That was our agreement before they left. It was two hours after they left my house that I was called that Emir had been killed,” he said. Oyedele appealed to residents to remain calm, assuring them that the government was working to resolve the crisis. The police have meanwhile transferred the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and vowed to arrest and prosecute everyone found culpable, regardless of their status. spokesperson for Osun State Police Command, Abiodun Ojelabi

Oyo Rising Citizens Forum Sets Date for Governance Dialogue With Senator Alli

The programme, tagged “A Dialogue on the Future of Oyo State,” will hold on Monday, September 21, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. prompt at Mercyfield Event Place, formerly known as NULGE Hall, along Onireke Road, Dugbe, Ibadan. The organisers disclosed this in a joint press release signed by Alaba Adebisi and Owolabi Salam. According to the organisers, the initiative will provide a direct and transparent platform for the APC candidate to engage with citizens and present his governance plans, policy direction and vision for Oyo State ahead of the 2027 governorship election. “The initiative is meticulously designed to provide a direct, transparent, and one-on-one platform for the APC flagbearer to engage with the public and explicitly detail his governance blueprint, policy frameworks, and definitive vision for the economic and social trajectory of Oyo State if he is elected as the next executive governor.” The Forum said it organised the programme to give residents an opportunity to understand what Senator Alli intends to offer the people of Oyo State if elected governor in 2027. FG Moves to Decriminalise Attempted Suicide in Nigeria

The Federal Government has begun the process of decriminalising attempted suicide in Nigeria after the Federal Executive Council approved the position of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare on the matter. The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Iziaq Salako, disclosed this in Abuja on Friday during the commemoration of the 2026 World Suicide Prevention Day. Salako, who the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Daju Kachollom, represented at the event, said the government would now forward the proposal to the National Assembly for the necessary legislative process. The minister described the proposed reform as both a legal and public health measure, stressing that people experiencing mental health crises need care and support rather than punishment. “A person experiencing a mental health crisis should be met with care, support and appropriate intervention, rather than punishment. “Removing the fear of criminal sanctions can help reduce stigma, encourage help-seeking and create greater opportunities for timely intervention,” Salako said. FG to Strengthen Mental Health Support Salako stressed that decriminalising attempted suicide alone would not end suicide in Nigeria. He said the government would continue to strengthen mental health services and expand community-based support. According to him, the government would also prioritise early identification and intervention while encouraging more open conversations about mental health and suicide prevention. Salako identified the National Mental Health Act 2021, National Mental Health Policy 2023 and National Suicide Prevention Strategic Framework 2023–2030 as key policy instruments guiding Nigeria’s response to suicide and mental health challenges. He added that the National Task Force on the Decriminalisation of Attempted Suicide had consulted policymakers and other stakeholders as part of efforts to advance the proposed reform. Government Plans Better Suicide Data Speaking on Nigeria’s mental health data, the National Coordinator, Mental Health Programme, Dr Tunde Ojo, acknowledged gaps in available statistics on suicide and attempted suicide. Ojo said the ministry was conducting surveys and using other data-gathering methods to develop more accurate and verifiable national statistics within the next year. The National Coordinator, National Action for Suicide Prevention, Dr Ade Bash, also reaffirmed the ministry’s plans to integrate mental health services into primary healthcare and strengthen community-based interventions. Stakeholders at the event welcomed the Federal Government’s move to decriminalise attempted suicide and pledged their continued support for the legislative process. They also backed efforts to strengthen suicide prevention programmes, improve access to mental healthcare and provide better support for people experiencing mental health crises in Nigeria.

Nigerians Have Right to Film Police on Duty, Lawyer Counters IGP Warning

Legal practitioner, Inibehe Effiong, has challenged the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, over his warning against Nigerians recording police officers for social media skits. Effiong argued that Nigerians have the right to record law enforcement officers while they perform their statutory duties in public. The lawyer made the remarks on Friday during an interview with Channels Television. Disu had warned Nigerians against recording police officers for skits, describing the practice as “very, very demoralising” to members of the force. The IGP clarified that his concern was not about citizens’ right to record police officers, but about using policemen as sources of content for social media. However, Effiong questioned what qualifies as content creation and whether the key consideration should be financial gain or public enlightenment. He said, “What is content creation? Is it materials generated and disseminated or published or circulated for revenue generation? Or is it simply posting information for public enlightenment? “What is the determining factor? Is it the quest for financial gain or public enlightenment? And who is the content creator?” Effiong argued that the broad definition of content creation could also apply to the Nigeria Police Force because the institution operates several platforms through which it produces and shares information. “Because if you examine the phrase content creator and content creation broadly, one can say that even the police itself is a content-creating institution,” he said. He pointed out that the police maintains social media handles, a website and a radio station, among other platforms, where it creates and disseminates content. “The reason is that the police owns and operates different platforms through which contents are created and disseminated, including the police social media handles, the website of the police, and other platforms, and even the police radio,” he said. The lawyer said the police therefore needed to clarify what the IGP meant by using police officers for content creation. He specifically questioned whether the warning targeted skit makers, entertainers and pranksters who earn a living from producing humorous content online. “So when the IG speaks about using policemen for content creation, it is important for us to be cautious. Is it referring to skit makers, entertainers or pranksters who are individuals who make a career or make a living from making comical contents and reproducing them online to generate traffic as a source of living?” he asked. Effiong also questioned why the police appeared concerned about citizens recording officers while they were carrying out their duties. “The question is, why is the police constantly fidgeting over the recording of their officers in the course of their duties?” he asked. Disu had cited instances of Nigerians filming police officers while they were eating as part of his concerns about the practice. Effiong, however, said he had not seen evidence that such incidents were widespread on social media. “He cited an instance where he said police officers would be eating and people would be filming them. I haven’t seen that being a practice that is rampant on social media,” he said. He called on the police to provide examples to support the concern raised by the IGP. “So I would be happy if the police can cite some instances to portray the fact that the IG has referenced,” Effiong said. The lawyer maintained that Nigerians have a constitutional right to record police officers and other law enforcement personnel while they perform their official duties in public. “But speaking generally, Nigerians have the right, unmistakably, to record incidents. Not just the police, but law enforcement officers generally, in the course of discharging their statutory responsibility,” he said. Effiong cited Section 39 of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantees freedom of expression, as the legal basis for the right. “That freedom includes the freedom to disseminate and propagate ideas and information,” he said. He added that the constitutional protection covers the various means people use to disseminate information, including mobile phones and other electronic devices. “Within the current constitutional framework, the right of the Nigerian people, the right of every person to record officers in public places usually, while exercising public responsibilities is important,” he said.

JUST IN: National Assembly Suspends Official Visits to South Africa

The National Assembly has suspended all official visits to South Africa and directed lawmakers and officials to boycott legislative activities hosted or organised by South African authorities until further notice. The House of Representatives spokesman, Akin Rotimi, disclosed the decision in a statement issued on Friday. “The Leadership of the National Assembly, led by H.E. Senator Godswill Akpabio, GCON, President of the Senate, and Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, PhD, GCON, Speaker of the House of Representatives, has directed the Clerk to the National Assembly to communicate to all Distinguished Senators, Honourable Members, Committees, departments, directorates, officials and staff the decision of the National Assembly to suspend all official visits to the Republic of South Africa and boycott South African-hosted or South African-organised legislative activities and engagements until further notice,” the statement read. The National Assembly took the decision amid growing concerns over reports of continued xenophobic attacks, violence, intimidation and destruction of property targeting Nigerians and other African nationals in South Africa. It expressed particular concern over reports that Nigerians had been killed, injured, displaced and forced to abandon their businesses, investments, homes and other properties. “Of particular concern to the National Assembly is the persistence of these incidents despite repeated appeals by the Federal Government of Nigeria and other stakeholders to the South African authorities to take decisive measures to protect Nigerians and other foreign nationals and bring perpetrators of xenophobic violence to justice,” the statement stated. The Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, said the leadership of the Senate and House of Representatives reached the decision after consultations. The directive covers official visits by lawmakers, committees, officials and staff of the National Assembly. It also covers conferences, seminars, workshops, meetings, parliamentary exchanges and other legislative engagements organised, hosted, sponsored or co-sponsored by South African legislative authorities. The National Assembly said the suspension applies to both physical and virtual engagements. It added that no official delegation, member or staff could participate in any such engagement during the suspension without the prior express approval of the leadership. The statement read: “For clarity and strict compliance, the directive provides as follows: “a. All official visits to the Republic of South Africa by the National Assembly, its Committees, lawmakers, officials and staff are hereby suspended; “b. All participation by the National Assembly, its Committees, lawmakers, officials and staff in legislative activities, conferences, seminars, workshops, meetings, exchanges or other engagements organised, hosted, sponsored or co-sponsored by the Parliament of the Republic of South Africa or other South African legislative authorities is hereby suspended; “c. The suspension shall apply to both physical and virtual/online engagements, including invitations to participate in meetings, programmes, parliamentary exchanges and other legislative activities hosted from or by South African legislative institutions; “d. No official delegation, Committee, lawmaker, official or staff member of the National Assembly shall undertake or participate in any such engagement during the period of the suspension without the prior express approval of the Leadership of the National Assembly; and “e. All existing arrangements, invitations or proposed programmes involving official visits or legislative engagements in South Africa shall be reviewed in accordance with this directive.” The latest move comes after the National Assembly earlier this year condemned renewed xenophobic attacks in South Africa and supported diplomatic efforts to address violence against Nigerians. The National Assembly said it would maintain the suspension until further notice and could review the decision based on subsequent developments. It, however, clarified that the action does not represent a rejection of Nigeria’s longstanding diplomatic and people-to-people relationship with South Africa. “While parliamentary diplomacy and inter-legislative cooperation remain important, they must rest on mutual respect and a shared commitment to protecting life, property and lawful enterprise,” the statement noted.

FG Pays $100,000 Each to D’Tigress Players for Fifth Afrobasket Triumph

The National Sports Commission has confirmed that each player of Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, has received the naira equivalent of $100,000 as part of the Presidential Reward for their historic victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket. The commission also confirmed the payment of the naira equivalent of $50,000 to each of the team’s officials. The accounts of the players and officials were credited on September 9, 2026, with the NSC saying all recipients had confirmed receipt of the funds. D’Tigress won the FIBA Women’s Afrobasket title for a record fifth consecutive time and seventh overall in 2025.The commission said the payment completed all components of the rewards promised to members of the team by President Bola Tinubu. In a statement signed by its Director of Information and Public Relations, Kehinde Ajayi, on Wednesday, the NSC said the Presidential Rewards comprised three-bedroom flats in Abuja, national honours of the Order of the Niger and the cash payments. “With the payment, the entire presidential rewards promised to each member of the team by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR comprising a 3-Bedroom flat in Abuja, national honours of OON and Naira equivalent of $USD 100,000 to players and $USD 50,000 to officials have been fully redeemed and completed,” the statement said. The commission recalled that the players and officials received the title documents for their three-bedroom apartments in Abuja and certificates of national honours in February 2026 during the FIBA World Cup qualifiers in Lyon, France. The NSC said the documents were duly signed by Tinubu. It added that the cash payment followed the team’s participation in the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Germany. The commission also disclosed that the Super Falcons, who were similarly promised Presidential Rewards, had received title documents for their three-bedroom apartments in Abuja and certificates of national honours. It said the Falcons received the documents during the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco in July and August 2026, adding that the cash component of their reward was expected to be paid before their next official engagements. The commission said the Super Falcons were promised the same cash rewards of the naira equivalent of $100,000 for each player and $50,000 for each official. It said the rewards were part of the Federal Government’s effort to prioritise the welfare of Nigerian athletes. The statement said, “This unprecedented rewards to the players and athletes by the Federal Government of Nigeria is in alignment with the Renewed Hope initiative and Shared Prosperity agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR which places athletes’ welfare and appropriate rewards top on the priority list. ”The commission thanked Tinubu for his support for Nigerian sports, saying his policies had given impetus to its reform agenda and efforts to develop a sustainable sports economy. It also appreciated the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, the Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs and the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation for their collaboration in implementing the rewards. The NSC said the collaboration ensured that the Presidential Rewards were implemented “in record time within the due process requirements.”

Hiroshima Atomic Bomb Survivor, Baseball Legend Isao Harimoto, Dies at 86

Japanese baseball icon Isao Harimoto, who survived the 1945 atomic bombing of Hiroshima as a child, has died in Tokyo at the age of 86, BBC Sport reported on Thursday. Harimoto, widely known as the “Hit Machine,” holds the record for the most hits in Japanese professional baseball history, with 3,085 hits during a 23-season career. He remains the only player in Nippon Professional Baseball history to reach 3,000 hits. He also hit 504 home runs and stole 319 bases, making him the only NPB player to record at least 500 home runs and 300 stolen bases. In Major League Baseball, only Barry Bonds, Willie Mays, and Alex Rodriguez have matched that combination. Harimoto was an 18-time All-Star and helped the Toei Flyers win their first Japan Series championship in 1962. He was inducted into the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame in 1990. Born Jang Hun in Hiroshima in 1940 to Korean parents, Harimoto grew up in Japan during a period when Koreans faced discrimination and legal restrictions. He later adopted the Japanese name Isao Harimoto and received Japanese citizenship later in life. His path to baseball greatness was complicated by a childhood accident that left his right hand severely burned. The injury restricted movement in his thumb and forefinger and left his other fingers curled. He consequently learned to throw and bat left-handed and used a specially made glove on his right hand. Harimoto also survived one of the defining tragedies of the 20th century. On August 6, 1945, when he was five years old, he was in Hiroshima when the United States dropped an atomic bomb on the city. Harimoto later recalled that his mother shielded him and his sister with her body when the bomb exploded. Another sister was killed. Despite those experiences, Harimoto went on to build one of the most remarkable careers in Japanese baseball. He joined the Toei Flyers in 1959 and spent 16 seasons with the club before later playing for the Yomiuri Giants and Lotte Orions. He won seven batting titles, including four consecutive titles from 1967 through 1970, a feat later matched by Ichiro Suzuki. Harimoto retired in 1981 after appearing in 2,752 games. After his playing career, he helped launch South Korea’s professional KBO baseball league in 1982 before becoming a prominent baseball commentator and pundit. The Golden Players Club, known as Meikyukai, paid tribute to Harimoto following his death, expressing its deep respect and gratitude for his achievements in baseball. Harimoto leaves behind a legacy that extends far beyond his extraordinary statistics, having overcome disability, discrimination, and the trauma of surviving the atomic bombing of Hiroshima to become one of Japan’s greatest baseball players.

Trump Promises $5,000 Payment to Americans if Republicans Retain Congress

US President Donald Trump has pledged to introduce a $5,000 federal “dividend” for every adult American if Republicans maintain control of both chambers of Congress in November’s midterm elections. Trump made the pledge on Wednesday at the Republican Party’s first-ever midterm convention in Dallas, Texas, turning an election rally into a pitch that could put billions of dollars directly into Americans’ pockets. “If the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, both of them,” Trump said, he would issue the payment “to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000.” Reuters reported that Trump called the proposed payment a dividend and gave no further details about how the scheme would be funded or implemented. ABC News similarly reported that Trump told the convention he would issue a $5,000 “dividend” to every adult American if Republicans held on to the House and Senate. The network quoted him as saying the proposal was possible “because of our tremendous strength and success economically.” Trump said the money would have to be spent within the United States. “The only caveat I have is that the dividend that we’re making must be spent in the United States of America,” Reuters quoted him as saying. The proposal would represent a huge federal outlay. Reuters estimated that paying $5,000 to roughly 270 million American adults could cost about $1.35tn. The news agency also reported that the legality and practical operation of the proposal were not immediately clear. The Associated Press reported that the proposed payments would likely cost more than $1tn, while questions remained over how they could be financed and administered. It also noted that Vice President JD Vance appeared to qualify Trump’s promise by suggesting that wealthier Americans could potentially be excluded. The pledge comes as Republicans fight to retain their congressional majorities in the November 3 midterm elections, with all seats in the House and about one-third of Senate seats at stake. Trump sought to make himself central to the campaign despite not being on the ballot, telling supporters to vote as though he were running. ABC News quoted him telling the crowd: “So I’m asking you to pretend that I’m on the ballot. I’m on the ballot. I’m on the ballot.” The president’s latest proposal also echoes an earlier idea for direct payments to Americans. Forbes reported in February 2025 that Trump was considering a “DOGE dividend” funded from savings generated by the Department of Government Efficiency, after Elon Musk proposed $5,000 refund cheques for taxpayers. That earlier proposal did not become a nationwide $5,000 payment. Trump’s latest announcement is therefore a political promise, not an existing federal payment programme. Any such scheme would require a mechanism for funding and implementation, with Reuters reporting that no further details were immediately available. The Republican Party’s convention comes against a difficult political backdrop for the party, with Reuters reporting that Trump’s approval ratings and voter dissatisfaction over the economy and the war in Iran have created risks for Republican candidates seeking re-election.
