OYSADA Distributes Farm Inputs To Farmers In Oluyole, Lagelu, Akinyele, Ibadan North East, Others.

In its ongoing mission to revamp food systems and empower local farmers, the Oyo State Agribusiness Development Agency (OYSADA) has expanded the N-CARES agricultural inputs distribution to six local government areas in Ibadan namely, Ibadan North East, Oluyole, Lagelu, Ibadan North-West, Ibadan South-West and Akinyele. The initiative, part of the broader Nigeria Community Action Recovery and Economic Stimulus (N‑CARES) programme, seeks to tackle skyrocketing input prices and boost food security by providing crucial farm inputs to smallholder farmers. Items distributed include NPK fertilizers, improved maize seeds, soybean seeds, herbicides, and NoduMax legume inoculants. At the distribution centre in Ibadan North East, beneficiaries received NPK fertilizer, improved maize seeds, and herbicides. Dr. Debo Akande, the Director-General of OYSADA, reiterated the vision behind the programme: “We are building more than farms; we are building resilience. Our farmers are the foundation of our food economy. With the right tools, they become entrepreneurs who feed not just their families, but the entire state.” Hon. Ibrahim Akinsola Akintayo, Executive Chairman of Ibadan North East LGA, described the intervention as timely and impactful. “This programme is coming at the right time. Many of our farmers had lost hope due to high prices of farm inputs. This will revive their season.” Akintayo said. Among the beneficiaries, Mrs. Folake Oduola said, “I had almost given up on farming this year. This support has brought hope back to my family.” Mr. Bashir Aluko, a maize and pepper farmer, added, “With this, I won’t need to take a loan. It shows the government hasn’t forgotten us.” Mrs Kehinde Ojebode, also noted, that “This support makes it easier to start afresh as a young farmer without debt.” In Oluyole, under the leadership of Executive Chairman Engr. Akeem Olatunji, farmers received similar input packages. Olatunji in address lauded the state government under the leadership of Engr. Seyi Makinde for the food sufficiency initiative through N-Cares program. “This support will boost maize production and encourage people to return to farming. Oluyole has vast lands, and we’re ready to produce.” Olatunji said. Speaking on behalf of the other beneficiaries Mr. Samuel Ogunyemi said, “It’s been a long time since I felt seen by the government.”   “I had seeds but no fertilizer. Now I can maximize my land,” added Adebayo Joseph, another farmer from Alata community said. At Lagelu LGA, chaired by Hon. Kamorudeen Mudasiru, had a large turnout of beneficiaries of over 100 farmers received 50kg of SSP fertilizer, improved maize seeds, soybean fertilizer, herbicides, 10kg soybean seeds, and NoduMax inoculants. Hon. Mudasiru stated, “This is not just input distribution, it’s a revival of Lagelu’s agricultural heritage.” Dele Ayoola, Secretary of the Lagelu Farmers’ Association, stated that, “Without this intervention, most of our members would have cut their farming plans in half.” Young soybean farmer, Mr. Saheed Adedokun, said the inoculants will increase yield through better nitrogen fixation. Mrs. Tawa Adebisi, farming with her husband, said, “With this, we expect to double our harvest.” At Ibadan North-West LGA, the Executive Chairman, Alhaji Ramon Adepoju, praised the initiative, saying, “This is a game-changer for our grassroots farmers. We will continue to support Engr Seyi Makinde and OYSADA’s vision.” Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, High Chief Ifalere Odebunmi Odegbola (Araba of Ibadan land) said, “As a traditional leader and a farmer, I see the value. This will help stabilize food in Ibadan.” Chief Ifaniyi Osuolale Akinpelu (Okun Meri of Ibadan land) also said, “It’s rare to see such a wide-reaching, practical support. It’s appreciated.” Farmers from Eleyele, Dugbe, and Ologuneru all took home bags of fertilizer, improved maize seeds, and herbicides. In Ibadan South-West, chaired by Ambassador Kehinde Adeyemi Akande, distribution was held for farmers in areas such as Ring Road, Oke-Ado, and Challenge. “OYSADA is helping us return dignity to farming. This input support is practical and timely,” Chairman Akande said. Baale Mojeed Tajo, Baale of Odo Ona, speaking for the beneficiaries, noted, that “Many of us have been farming for decades. This is the first time government support is arriving before the rains finish.” Chief Mukaila Sanusi (Baale Agbe) added; “We will see better food prices because of this intervention.” In Akinyele, Hon. Wole Akinleye, Executive Chairman of Akinyele LGA, commended the rollout. He said, “Akinyele remains one of the biggest agrarian zones in Oyo State. This support is an investment in our people’s prosperity.” Among the recipients was Mrs. Funke Adeola, who cultivates cassava, maize, and vegetables. “Before now, I could only manage a few beds. This means I can go big again.” Adeola said. Another beneficiary, Mr Kolawole Aderibigbe said; “With these inputs, I can expand my maize farm and feed my community.” Also present were farmers from Moniya, Ojoo, and Elekuru, who received fertilizers, maize seeds, and herbicides.

OYSADA Extends N-CARES Farm Inputs Distribution To Ibarapa, Oke-Ogun Zones •••As Farmers In Aiyete, Igboora, Iwere-Ile, Others Rejoice Over Govt. Support

The Oyo State Agribusiness Development Agency (OYSADA) has extended the ongoing fifth phase of the Nigeria Community Action Recovery and Economic Stimulus (N-CARES) farm inputs distribution to farmers across Ibarapa East, Ibarapa Central, Ibarapa North, Iwajowa, and Itesiwaju Local Government Areas of Oyo State. The distribution exercise led by the Director General of OYSADA, Dr. Debo Akande aimed at mitigating the economic effects of the hardship ensued from the fuel subsidy removal on smallholder farmers as well as to enhance food production across the state. While addressing the beneficiaries on Friday, the OYSADA DG, Dr Debo Akande reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to fairness and transparency. He said, “This process is guided by principles of transparency, accountability, and orderliness. We are committed to ensuring that only genuine farmers benefit from this programme. “Governor Seyi Makinde has made it clear, there is no room for favouritism or political interference in empowering our rural farmers.” Debo said. At Aiyete, the headquarters of Ibarapa North, the intervention brought a wave of relief as ten verified farmer groups, each consisting of ten members, received NPK fertilizer, cassava stems, and herbicides. The Executive Chairman of Ibarapa North Local Government, Hon. Lateef Akorede Adebare, was represented by the Secretary of the Local Government, Hon. Oyediran Monsuru, who commended the initiative: “What the government is doing through OYSADA is not just support, it is a statement that rural farmers matter.” One of the beneficiaries, Alabi Saminu, a cassava farmer, said. “We were almost giving up because fertilizer and herbicides are now beyond the reach of poor farmers like us. But today, we received help without stress or middlemen. Governor Makinde has shown that he understands our struggles.” Pastor Olayiwola, Chairman of the Farmers Association in Ibarapa North, also remarked, “This is the first time in years that our people are receiving government support directly. We are not just receiving farm inputs, we are receiving encouragement to keep feeding the state.” At the Ibarapa East distribution centre in Eruwa, verified farmers received NPK fertilizer, improved maize seeds, and herbicides. The Executive Chairman, Hon. Arogundade Owolabi, was represented by his Chief of Staff, Hon. Olatunji Kazali. “This initiative is a lifeline to many of our farmers who have been struggling with the rising cost of inputs. The transparency and efficiency of OYSADA’s operations under Dr. Debo Akande are commendable.” Ajayi Olakunle, a maize farmer, described the intervention as timely. He said, “When I heard about this programme, I didn’t believe it would reach us. But here I am today with fertilizer and seeds in my hands. It’s not just support, it’s a show of genuine concern.” Another farmer, Segun Ojebola, added, “For years, we’ve heard about government programmes that never get to the real farmers. But this is different. This support got to us directly, no politics, no middlemen.” Also, at Ibarapa Central in Igboora, the distribution was met with enthusiasm. The LGA Chairman, Hon. Sola Adeleke, was represented by his Chief of Staff, Atilola Oyeyemi. “This is what inclusive governance looks like. These inputs are not handouts, they are investments in the future of food security.” He said. The Chairman of the Farmers’ Association in Ibarapa Central, Adeleke Azeez, added: “We farmers are the backbone of this state’s food supply. But today, Governor Makinde has shown that he sees us. With these inputs, many of our members will return to their farms with renewed hope.” Okegbenle Mofoyofolu, a representative of a women-led cooperative, said: “Many of us are single mothers and widows. This support is nothing short of a miracle. The fact that we were included means someone is truly listening to rural voices.” The distribution train also reached Iwere Ile in Iwajowa Local Government, where over 100 farmers received 50kg SSP fertilizer, soybean herbicide, NoduMax legume inoculant for soybeans, and 10kg soybean seeds each. The event was supervised by the Iwajowa Local Government Chairman, Hon. Abiodun Oyewunmi Muritala, who was represented by the Secretary to the Local Government, Hon. Adeola Seyi. Among the beneficiaries were Moriamo Yekini and Akintunde Yusuf, who both expressed deep gratitude for the assistance that came at a critical time in the farming season. Moriamo Yekini, a widow and vegetable farmer, said, “I never thought I would benefit from a government programme like this. With these inputs, I can expand my farm and take better care of my children. This is a huge blessing.” Akintunde Yusuf, a young farmer from Iwere Ile, added, “This support proves that farming is not a forgotten profession. With the rising cost of everything, this is the boost I needed to keep going. I’m grateful to OYSADA and Governor Makinde.” In Itesiwaju LGA, the distribution was held at Otu, where it was overseen by the Vice Chairman, Hon. Ayangade Peter Ayantayo, who represented the Local Government Chairman, Hon. Ojo Monsuru Olayemi. Hon. Ayantayo praised the initiative, saying, “This programme is a direct investment in our people. It shows that government can work for everyone, not just the privileged. We are grateful for this timely intervention.” High-profile beneficiaries in the area included the Oniro of Otu, His Royal Highness, Oba Sunday Adepoju, and Chief Julius Ayandele Ayanwunmi. Speaking on behalf of traditional leaders, Oba Adepoju applauded the state government’s grassroots engagement, “For the government to remember us here in the rural communities shows that we are not forgotten. This is the kind of responsive leadership we prayed for.”

A Closer Look at Representation in Ondo South: a missed Opportunity? By Dayo Awotula.

A Closer Look at Representation in Ondo South: a missed Opportunity? By Dayo Awotula.

As constituents, we must always assess the bond of social contract between us and our representatives sent either to The National or State Assembly. We are motivated by goings on around us to turn our attention to Ondo South Senatorial District — a region with immense potentials yet one that appears to be facing Senatorial leadership deficit in Abuja. Needless to say this discourse is warranted by the concern of this writer, who is from Ondo South and whose ancestral place of birth is Igbolomi in Ilajeland, the coastal swathe of land which contributes greatly to the national revenue based on the natural resources Providence has provided beneath the Ilaje earth crust. Definitely , I am proud to be from Ondo South and should be unbiased about the input of leaders we have sent to represent us. At the center of this Leadership cum representative concern is no other person than Senator Jimoh Ibrahim,CFR, multiple holders of Phd degrees obtained from studies abroad, cerebral and current representative of Ondo South Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senate. While his academic credentials are notable, enviable and praise worthy, concerns are growing about his effectiveness in translating the deluge of knowledge he possesses into tangible outcomes for his constituents. Elementary understanding of quality representation, the type he campaigned for across Ondo South which made him win the Senate seat , should mean presence, advocacy, and results — particularly in terms of infrastructure, youth empowerment, and federal inclusion. But after two years in office, there are growing concerns that Senator Ibrahim has fallen short of these expectations, sadly so because he represents an academic paradigm shift in the caliber of Senators that have been chosen by the good people of Ondo South to legislate on their behalf at the Senate. Rather than channeling influence to attract federal presence or real time development projects beyond tokenism to Ondo South, the senator is said to have prioritized self-promotion on the global stage — leaving his district with limited federal engagement and little to show in terms of major senatorial projects. One example drawing public criticism will suffice : rather than advocating for federal employment opportunities for qualified youths from Ondo South, the senator reportedly distributes ₦50,000 stipends to a select few every four months. That’s ₦12,500 a month — barely enough for a single meal a day. Critics warned that this approach is unsustainable and does little to prepare the next generation for leadership in federal institutions. We as concerned youths of Ondo South who know the leadership capacity of our Senator and his leverage as a billionaire business mogul and politician stand to be corrected that this tokenism from our Senator is an intentional approach to underdevelop the youths and tying them permanently to the apron string of ‘ The Lord of the Manor’ in the district. Let us take a look at another veneer of the Policy posturing of our Ondo South Senator which he tagged ‘the Aseyori Card’ , a phenomenon he claimed will become the almighty social security symbol for the constituents which he stressed will be the automated card that will grant the holders across Ondo South access to all the good things of life such as fund , provisions and groceries that will be railroaded to the districts in trucks and lorry loads at quarterly intervals all through his tenure of Senatorial representation at The Senate. In barely two years, it has become unfortunately obvious that Senator Jimoh Ibrahim’s much-touted “Kaadi Aseyori” which he claimed was inspired by insights from his PhD research, has so far proven to be little more than an elaborate performance piece — long on academic posturing, short on practical value. For the people of Ondo South, its impact has been negligible, if not entirely absent, raising questions about whether the initiative was ever designed for their benefit or simply crafted as a political smokescreen. In the style of hollow intellectualism masquerading as policy, the senator’s approach feels less like leadership and more like calculated distraction — a reminder that sometimes, the loudest claims mask the thinnest results. It’s high time the district looked outside this echo chamber — perhaps, as some say, to the “alien’s stable” where results, not rhetoric, lead the charge. And in a broader perspective — while other senators from the state are reportedly lobbying for critical infrastructure, like the expansion of the Akure-Ore expressway, Ondo South residents struggle to name a single major initiative tied to their representative. Comparisons are already being made with the input of active and caring heart senators like Senator Yayi from Ogun State or Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan in Kogi, both of whom have taken bold steps to empower their constituencies beyond ‘ street light tokenism’ which all the 109 Senators have distributive patronage to. Adding further controversy is the alleged attempt by Senator Ibrahim to discredit female colleagues — particularly Senator Natasha — rather than focus on collaboration and delivery. Service delivery is not determined by academic credentials, and the case of Interior Minister Hon. Bunmi Tunji-Ojo makes that point unequivocally clear. Without flaunting a PhD and without bias to the fact that BTO is an equally brilliant young mind, he has delivered transformative leadership — digitizing a once analog ministry, streamlining operations, and earning widespread praise from Nigerians at home and abroad. His results-driven approach has not only surpassed his predecessors but set a new benchmark for public office. In sharp contrast, the distinguished senator representing Ondo South seems more preoccupied with academic bragging rights than measurable performance, offering little more than rhetoric while his district remains underservedly stagnant.   Leadership is not just about titles or credentials — it’s about results. And right now, Ondo South may be missing out on both. With the 2027 elections drawing nearer, many are beginning to ask: is it time to look toward new, visionary leadership? The type that prioritizes people over profile, and performance over prestige? We’ll be watching as time ticks as we hope our elected Senator … Read more

Ondo Nurses Declare Seven-Day Warning Strike, Halt Patient Care

The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, Federal Medical Centre, Owo chapter, has declared that it will not attend to any patient during its ongoing seven-day warning strike, regardless of the severity of cases. Mr. Coker Oluwasegun, secretary of the association, made this known on Thursday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, accusing the Federal Government of neglecting the welfare of nurses. “It is total compliance—no leeway whatsoever,” he said. “The Federal Government has unfairly treated nurses over the years, and this is the time for us to take the bull by the horns. “This action is not against the management of FMC Owo, as we have already informed the Medical Director and his team.” Oluwasegun lamented poor remuneration and working conditions, noting that the uniform allowance has remained N20,000 per year for over two decades. “In all other allowances, nurses receive the least, despite being the backbone of the health sector. There’s a lack of equipment in most hospitals, making patients wrongly assume we are responsible for poor outcomes. The working conditions are deplorable,” he added. He cited a string of unfulfilled promises by the Federal Government and reiterated that the warning strike would last seven days. “If our 12-point demands are not met, we will resume after the warning strike and issue a 21-day ultimatum, after which an indefinite strike will commence,” Oluwasegun stated. Tinubu Will Win 2027 With 15m Votes—Ex-APC Aspirant

Tinubu Will Win 2027 With 15m Votes—Ex-APC Aspirant

A former presidential aspirant of the All Progressives Congress, Nicolas Felix, has dismissed the newly formed opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress as no threat to President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid. Speaking in Suleja on Thursday during the distribution of thousands of litres of fuel to Nigerians, Felix expressed confidence that Tinubu would win the 2027 presidential election with no less than 15 million votes. On July 1st, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, APC’s 2023 presidential aspirant Rotimi Amaechi, and other opposition figures launched the ADC as a unified opposition platform to challenge President Tinubu in the 2027 election. Reacting, Felix maintained that while there’s nothing wrong with opposition leaders forming a coalition, he believes they will eventually fall apart just as easily as they came together. He said, “In a democracy, you must have opposition. We are not threatened. They are out there campaigning. So far, we have not heard anything they want to do anyway. “So for us as a party, I don’t see any threat here. There is no threat in this coalition. We want them to coalesce. Like I said the other day, they will gather, but they will scatter because they have nothing to offer. Their intention is not pure. Their motive is not pure. “As far as we are concerned and the APC, come 2027, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is going to have nothing less than 15 million votes. We know that is going to happen. So there is no threat from the ADC or whatever coalition. Let them come. When the time comes for campaigns, we are going to roll out the scorecard of Mr President. “Didn’t you watch on TV this morning students on campuses singing, celebrating with joy, who just received the NELFund grant, over N100 billion, with no interest, by the way. I lived in America for 21 years; I had never heard that happen. Over N100 billion given to 600,000 students. So these 600,000 students, they will vote. Their families will vote because they know what it takes to go to school. So we are excited, and we know come 2027, it is going to be a walkover for us.” He stated that his decision to regularly distribute free fuel to Nigerians is his way of supporting the president’s Renewed Hope Agenda. The ex-presidential aspirant stated, “We are giving out free fuel to the community. As you know, this is our Renewed Hope season. We are just doing this to put smiles on the faces of the people. “There is no other motivation, but we just want to give back to the community. We did this in 2023 in Edo State, and we did it here also, and we decided to come back here to make the people happy. As you can see, they are all smiling. We are giving them hope. “This outreach is for everybody, but we know those who need it more. So, I am even more excited seeing the Okada riders because we believe, you know, I would be surprised if I see a G-Waggon here coming to take free fuel. This is more for the Okada and Keke riders. So anybody that comes, we will be able to, you know, just put smiles on their face. We are just giving back. That is what it is all about.” Also speaking, APC Deputy National Women Leader Zainab Ibrahim stated that the party is pushing for sthe wift passage of the Special Seats Bill currently before the National Assembly, calling it a potential game changer for women in Nigeria. She noted that, for the first time, the Ministry of Women Affairs has received over ₦100 billion in budgetary allocation to pursue its key goals and assured that Nigerian women will stand firmly behind the president in 2027. ORIIRE YOUTH COUNCIL MET WITH INEC AND NOA, PROPOSE PARTNERSHIP FOR THEIR ONE WEEK-LONG PVC DRIVE

ORIIRE YOUTH COUNCIL MET WITH INEC AND NOA, PROPOSE PARTNERSHIP FOR THEIR ONE WEEK-LONG PVC DRIVE

In a significant move to deepen democratic engagement and boost voters’ participation in Oriire Local Government, the Oriire Youth Council (OYC) earlier today held a tripartite meeting with representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the National Orientation Agency (NOA) at the Legislative Building of the Oriire Local Government Secretariat. The meeting, which focused on forging partnerships for the upcoming PVC Sensitization Drive scheduled for August 18–22, was attended by key stakeholders from the three bodies. Leading the INEC delegation was *Mr. Olundegun M.A.*, Electoral Officer for Oriire, while *Mr. Adeniyi Oluseyi Gideon*, the Community Orientation and Mobilisation Officer (COMO), represented the NOA. In his opening remarks, Sarafadeen Isiaq Owonikoko,National Chairman of OYC, emphasized the importance of strategic collaborations to increase civic consciousness, particularly among youths and first-time voters. “Our people must understand that having a Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC) is not just a right, but a responsibility to influence governance and development in our area,” he said. Akanji Folasade, Vice Chairman II of the Council, advocated for a community-based awareness model, suggesting that “religious centers, markets, and popular meeting places should be the key touchpoints of our campaign.” The National Public Relations Officer I, Ajadi Isaac Oluwasegun, described the campaign as timely, noting that “there is no better time to drive home the importance of voter participation, especially with the low voter turnout and large numbers of uncollected PVCs.” INEC’s Mr. Olundegun lamented the apathy among registered voters in the local government, revealing that “a significant number of PVCs are lying unclaimed in our custody. We are looking forward to the Youth Council’s efforts to encourage people, especially the youth, to come forward and collect their cards.” NOA’s representative, Mr. Adeniyi Oluseyi Gideon, commended the initiative and stressed the need to extend the advocacy beyond PVC collection to harnessing Oriire’s other potentials. “With our vast arable lands, we should also use this opportunity to promote community development and attract agricultural investments,” he advised. Ojo Oluwasegun Emmanuel, National PRO II, emphasized the need for continuity. “This sensitization shouldn’t end in one week; we should institutionalize civic education at the grassroots.” The Council’s Financial Secretary, Akorede Phebian Jacob highlighted the inclusive nature of the campaign, stating, “We are deliberate in reaching women, youths, and the elderly across all wards.” Aremu Gideon, who represented Ward 9, called on INEC and NOA to approve formal collaboration for the campaign period. “We hope that after today’s deliberation, we can move from intention to implementation.” Joshua Ojo Aderemi, Ex-Officio I and the member representing Oriire Youths at the Oyo State Youth Parliament, added that “voter apathy undermines our electoral strength. If we turn out massively to vote, it will boost our chances of attracting attention to Oriire in government policies, appointments, and infrastructural development.” The INEC and NOA representatives welcomed the proposal and assured the Council that the partnership request would be relayed to their respective superior offices for prompt consideration and possible approval. Earlier this month, OYC had also met with the Legislative Council of Oriire under the leadership of *Hon. Opeyemi Adebayo*, the Executive Chairman of Oriire LG, *Hon. Michael Alabi Olateju*, and *Hon. Johnson Ogundele Akin*, the Member representing Oriire State Constituency. Similarly, they held consultations with *Hon. Sanjo Adedoyin*, Majority Leader of the Oyo State House of Assembly. Scheduled meetings are underway with other political stakeholders including *Hon. Jacob Bamigboye*, *Rt. Hon. Gunju Ojo*, *Hon. Olamijuwonlo Alao-Akala*, *Hon. Segun Ogunwuyi Ebenezer* and party secretariats of the PDP and APC. Courtesy visit letters have also been submitted to *Hon. Wasilat Adegoke* (Commissioner for Youth and Sports), *Hon. Dotun Oyelade* (Commissioner for Information), *Rt. Hon. Edward Adebo Ogundoyin* (Speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly), *Hon. Open Salawu* (DG, Project Performance Monitoring Agency), and *Hon. Akinwale Wolekanle* (Chairman, Oyo State Local Government Service Commission). The Youth Council reiterated that the overarching aim of the campaign is to reposition Oriire in the political landscape by promoting active civic participation, thereby fostering a culture of accountability and responsive governance.

(PHOTOS)AI Revolution Takes Centre Stage As Medical Experts Convene In Ibadan For NAPGHAN 2025 Scientific Conference

The 11th Annual General and Scientific Conference of the Nigerian Association of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (NAPGHAN) kicked off in Ibadan, Oyo State, drawing experts from across Nigeria and beyond to explore the transformative impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on child health. The keynote speaker, Professor James Renner, Professor of Paediatrics at Babcock University College of Medicine and Health Sciences, delivered a powerful and inspiring message that set the tone for the conference. Speaking on the transformative power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in child health, he said, “When we speak of a revolution in medicine, we don’t mean smoke-filled streets or manifestos. This is a revolution made not by crowds, but by code. Quiet, yet powerful. Not loud, but lasting. Not chaotic, but creative. And it is only just beginning.” Professor Renner outlined the evolving role of AI in paediatric gastroenterology, hepatology, and nutrition, stressing that AI is not just a tool but a fundamental shift in how healthcare is approached, delivered, and experienced. He detailed how AI is already improving diagnostic accuracy, personalising nutrition through genomics and microbiome analysis, and enhancing remote monitoring through mobile applications for feeding practices and symptom tracking. He stated emphatically: “AI is with us. We cannot shy away from it. But we must use it sensibly, with ethical responsibility and scientific clarity. AI must not mislead us; rather, it must guide us to be better, faster, more precise—without losing our human compassion.” He added that every child deserves access to the benefits of AI, calling on the government and healthcare institutions to embrace the technology in full support of the Nigerian child. “In the last eight months alone, over ten countries have adopted AI-driven systems in paediatric care. We must not be left behind,” he warned. The conference, hosted for the first time in the South-West Zone, was declared open with a warm welcome from the Chairperson of the Local Organizing Committee, Dr. Joyce Akinseinde, who described it as a landmark event and a personal honour. She welcomed dignitaries including the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Oyo State, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi (represented); Chief Host and CMD of UCH, Professor Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo (represented by Professor Olubukola Adesina); and the host, Prof. Biobele Brown, among other academic and clinical leaders. She called on participants to actively engage with the theme and use the sessions to spark new insights and collaborations. In his presidential address, Professor Felix Olukayode Akinbami, President of NAPGHAN, echoed the urgency of embracing AI, describing it as a “transformative force” with the potential to redefine medical practice. “Artificial Intelligence can enhance diagnostics, personalise treatment plans, and improve patient outcomes. But we must also ask, can it replace the nuances of human judgement, empathy, and experience?” he queried, urging delegates to critically explore these questions during the conference. Prof. Akinbami also announced plans to propose the creation of a national registry for congenital alimentary tract malformations in children, citing the need for real-time data to inform policy and care. He expressed appreciation to Prof. Otegbayo for hosting the conference free of charge and for approving the acquisition of a paediatric endoscope for the newly accredited unit in the Department of Paediatrics at UCH—a major win for child health services in Nigeria. Representing Prof. Otegbayo, Prof. Olubukola Adesina, Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee, noted that UCH remains committed to promoting innovation and advancing research in paediatric healthcare. “AI must be an enabler, not a barrier,” he cautioned, emphasising the need for data security, ethical compliance, and capacity building among healthcare workers. Co-chairperson of the LOC, Dr. Virginia Guvoeke, underscored the relevance of the theme, describing the event as an opportunity to reaffirm the association’s commitment to gastrointestinal health for Nigerian children. “AI has come to stay. It is changing how we manage our patients, and we are optimistic that with government support, we can do more,” she said in an interview. Also speaking at the event, Professor Iyabo Runsewe-Abiodun, logistics chairperson and advisor, encouraged participants to fully engage with the presentations and translate the knowledge gained into practical clinical impact. “The world is tending towards AI, and so is medicine. We must not be left behind,” she stressed. Among other distinguished attendees were Dr. Akinfemi Akinyode, Permanent Secretary, Oke Ogun Health Zone 1 (representing the Oyo State Health Commissioner); Dr. Tomi Coker, Honourable Commissioner for Health, Ogun State, represented by Dr. Ogunsilu Esther, Director of Primary Health Care System Development, Ogun State; and Dr. Wole Oyeyemi, Director of Administration, UCH. The scientific sessions and workshops of the conference will focus on topics such as inflammatory bowel disease, chronic liver disease, diagnostic challenges in resource-limited settings, and nutrition therapy. The conference promises not only intellectual enrichment but opportunities for professional networking, collaborations, and long-lasting partnerships in paediatric gastroenterology across Nigeria and beyond. With Professor James Renner’s passionate call to action and the collective commitment of healthcare leaders, NAPGHAN 2025 has set a new pace in aligning child health with global technological advancement. “This is not just a conference,” Prof. Renner concluded. “It’s a beginning. Let us make sure every Nigerian child benefits from this AI revolution.”

I’ll Sustain Demand For University Autonomy — ASUU President

The current National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, says that he and his administration will sustain the demand for university autonomy. This was even as his immediate predecessor, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, stated that poor treatment of university lecturers is responsible for academics japa. Prof. Christopher Piwuna, who is a Nigerian Professor of Medicine and currently the 14th National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, stated this on Monday during a reception organized for the immediate past President of ASUU by Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike chapter of the union. Prof. Piwuna promised “I will sustain the demand for university autonomy, academic freedom and other general conducive environment for ASUU members”, stating that strike action is a universal tool that can not be taken off the table, but only applied if the government fails to honour its agreements with ASUU.” “ASUU struggle is a collective one that concern the lecturers, students and the parents. Strike is a universal tool that is not perculier to Nigeria alone. It is a toll that is used all over and can not be taken off the table, but we hope that we don’t have to embark on any action before we can get what we want,” he said. Also speaking, the Chairperson of ASUU in Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, MOUAU branch, Chike Ugwuene, extolled the former President of ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, for making MOUAU and the nation proud, adding that there is harmony now between the management of MOUAU and ASUU in Umudike. “He served the nation and made ASUU MOUAU proud by fighting for the the betterment of education system in Nigeria. There is harmony between ASUU MOUAU and the university management. The management is cooperating with us but don’t be surprised that if anything goes wrong, we will still ask for our rights and for the betterment of the society”, she said Receiving the former ASUU President, the Vice Chancellor of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Professor Maduebibisi Iwe, who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor(Academics), Prof. Nneoma Obasi said his university is proud of the roles Prof. Osodeke played as President of ASUU, stating that MOUAU stood by Osodeke “throughout his sleepless nights of endless negotiations.” In his speech, Prof. Osodeke said under his leadership, the union fought several battles to keep education alive during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari and former Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige. According to him, “Ngige’s rough relationship with ASUU created a lot of confusion in the country,” which he said, would have collapsed the education system if not for ASUU’s resilience. Professor Osodeke said that the poor treatment of university lecturers was responsible for the exodus (japa) of Nigerian academics to the United States, Europe and Saudi Arabia, adding, “We encountered a lot of difficulties during the era of Ex- President Muhammadu Buhari, anchored by Chris Ngige who created a lot of confusion when we were struggling for the good of our education system.” “Our struggles have kept our public Universities where they are today and saved them from collapsing like other public institutions like Nigerian Airways and Nigerian refineries,” and explained that ASUU was able to achieve the removal of Universities from the IPPS system, while a number of Professors now retire with their full pay. He noted that ASUU’s struggle is a collective initiative for the interests of lecturers, students and their parents, regretting, “public universities still offer quality education more than private ones”, stating that 95% of university students’ population in Nigeria are still found in public universities. The Pro Chancellor/Chairman, Governing Council of MOUAU, Felix Edeh, represented the Visitor to the University, President Bola Ahmed, while a former National President of ASUU, Isa Nasir Fagee, was the chairman of the occasion. Tinubu’s Wife’s N1bn Donation Stirs Protest Among IDPs In Benue

Some Internally Displaced Persons from various camps on Wednesday thronged the Makurdi/Laafia Federal Highway and protested the non-sharing of the N1 billion donation made by Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the wife of President Bola Tinubu. Senator Tinubu, who paid a condolence visit to the state on Tuesday, donated N1 billion for the victims of armed herder attacks. The displaced persons stormed the Makurdi/Laafia federal highway, which disrupted the free flow of vehicular movement. One of the protesters, who simply identified himself as Teeser, accused the state government of not giving out several donations it has received from spirited individuals. He said, “Several people, both private and public-spirited people, have been donating for the upkeep of displaced persons, but nothing has been received from the state government. “The wife of the president, Senator Tinubu yesterday (Tuesday) donated N1 billion to displaced persons and the state government is yet to reach out to us. The Information Officer of the State Emergency and Management Agency, Tema Ager, dismissed the claim by the IDPs, saying that no IDP in the state is being starved. He said that the government was constantly providing for their needs. He said, “The major issue that triggered this protest is politics. Simply because the first lady visited yesterday and announced that she donated N1 billion. You know the process of getting this money; sometimes, they just announce it. It’s when they go back that they process it. “What she announced yesterday cannot happen today, and so the money is for resettlements, not for food, and some of them are protesting that they were given money before, and we have not shared it with them. “That money is not meant to be shared with them. The protest was politically motivated. They were supposed to be given food last week, but the event was overtaken by events. “As we speak now, food is being distributed to them, but they protest that the road was politically motivated. The last time food was distributed to the IDPs was in May this year, but currently, food is being distributed to the IDPs across the state. Reacting to the protest, the Technical Adviser on Media, Communication and Publicity to the state governor, Solomon Iorpev, said that the protest was politically motivated. “If not so, the wife of president Tinubu, senator Oluremi just gave the cheque on Tuesday which is yet to be cleared and cashed for the purpose it was meant. Today, IDPs have blocked the Makurdi – Lafia- Abuja high way demanding for the money.” Iorpev said that Governor Alia is keen on ensuring the welfare of the vulnerable groups in the state, and he will be the last person to think of diverting money meant for the less privileged and urged politicians to close ranks to move the state forward. Efforts to get a reaction from the Police Public Relations Officer for Benue State Command, DSP Udeme Edet, were not successful as calls put to her were unanswered. Punch
