Edun: Ailing Finance Minister Flown Abroad for Treatment

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, has travelled to the United Kingdom to seek medical attention, multiple sources close to the development confirmed on Tuesday morning. The report, first published by Western Post, was confirmed by a source who had earlier told The PUNCH that the minister might seek medical attention abroad if the need arises. The source confirmed on Tuesday that the decision had now been made, saying, “It’s true, he has left already.” Edun left Abuja for Lagos on Monday night via a commercial flight. He later departed for London aboard a British Airways flight on the same night. Until his departure, Presidency officials who spoke to our correspondent on Sunday had maintained that Edun was recuperating at his Abuja residence under the care of Nigerian doctors. The sources said the minister had taken ill in recent days but dismissed earlier rumours that he had suffered a stroke or was incapacitated. Imisi Crowned Winner of BBNaija 10/10! One senior government official, who spoke on condition of anonymity for lack of authorisation to speak to the press on the matter, told The PUNCH that Edun’s condition was being monitored closely. “Yes, he’s indisposed. He’s sick, which is a bit serious, but it’s not a stroke. As I’m talking to you, he’s in his house. He’s not been flown anywhere,” the source had said on Sunday evening. The official, however, added that doctors might recommend foreign medical care if necessary, a decision that has now been made. Another aide familiar with the matter confirmed that Edun’s medical situation had prompted closer attention from the President but stressed that “there are no plans to replace him.” The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, also confirmed that the minister had fallen ill but was initially receiving treatment in Nigeria. “Yes, he’s indisposed. Wale Edun is about 69 years old. He suddenly fell ill. As we are talking, he is in Nigeria. He is recuperating. He’s around,” Onanuga said on Sunday. The Presidency had earlier debunked speculation that President Bola Tinubu was considering a replacement for the finance minister. However, it confirmed that the minister would miss this year’s World Bank and International Monetary Fund Annual Meetings in Washington, D.C. According to a statement by Onanuga, the Central Bank Governor, Olayemi Cardoso, would instead lead Nigeria’s delegation to the global finance meetings, which begin today, Tuesday, October 14. Appointed on August 28, 2023, Edun has been a key figure in the Tinubu administration’s economic reform drive, overseeing the removal of petrol subsidies, unification of foreign exchange rates, and fiscal measures aimed at stabilising the naira and curbing inflation. He served as Lagos State Commissioner for Finance under Tinubu’s administration between 1999 and 2004 and later co-founded investment banking firm Denham Management Limited. At the time of this report, the Ministry of Finance had yet to issue an official statement on the minister’s whereabouts.

Allocate Forfeited Emefiele Estate to Low-Income Earners, Reps Tell FG

The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to prioritise low and middle-income earners, internally displaced persons and other vulnerable groups in the allocation of a 753-unit estate recently forfeited to the government. As reported by Channels TV, the resolution followed the adoption of a motion by Rep. Jafaru Leko on the “Need for Transparent and Equitable Allocation of Forfeited Abuja Estate.” In May,the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission handed over the property, seized from ex-Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development. Leko told the chamber on Tuesday that the property is located at Plot 109, Cadastral Zone C09, Lokogoma District, Abuja, and covered more than 150,000 square metres. He explained that they were allegedly acquired with proceeds of unlawful activities linked to Emefiele and represent “a significant milestone in the nation’s anti-corruption efforts.” The lawmaker said, “If properly managed, the estate could contribute meaningfully to addressing Nigeria’s severe housing deficit, particularly in cities like Abuja.” He expressed concern that without a transparent and accountable framework, the properties might end up in the hands of “privileged elites,” defeating the purpose of asset recovery and denying ordinary Nigerians access to decent housing. He warned that without an open, accountable allocation mechanism, the estate risks being captured by privileged elites and could “erode public confidence in government’s anti-corruption and social justice programmes.” He recalled the constitutional obligation of all levels of government to ensure citizens’ welfare, including the provision of adequate shelter, as enshrined in Chapter II of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). Adopting the motion, the House resolved to urge the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development to develop and publish a transparent and inclusive allocation framework for the estate. The framework should prioritise low- and middle-income earners, IDPs, and other vulnerable groups. Lawmakers also directed the ministry to submit a comprehensive report within 60 days detailing the proposed use of the estate, allocation criteria and beneficiary selection process. In addition, the Committee on Housing and Habitat was mandated to liaise with the ministry and report to the House within four weeks to ensure the exercise adheres to principles of equity and transparency. “Transparency in asset management is vital to building public trust. Nigerians must see the benefits of recovered assets directly improving lives,” Leko added.

FG Secures ₦4 Trillion Bond To Settle Power Sector Arrears, Boost Investment,Stability

ABUJA – AS part efforts to revitalize Nigeria’s power sector, the Federal Government on Tuesday announced it has finalized a comprehensive plan to deploy ₦4 trillion in government-backed bonds aimed at settling verified arrears owed to power generation companies (GenCos) and gas suppliers. The move comes after years of unresolved debts, which have hampered industry stability, deterred investment, and weakened the financial health of power utilities. Mrs. Olu Verheijen, the Special Adviser to the President on Energy, confirmed the breakthrough in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja. She revealed that these bonds are part of an initiative approved by President Bola Tinubu and the Federal Executive Council, designed to address deep-rooted structural challenges in Nigeria’s power sector and foster an environment conducive to massive private sector investment. The agreement was reached during a high-level meeting attended by key government officials, including the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun; the Minister of Power, Chief Bayo Adelabu; and Mrs. Verheijen. The meeting focused on reviewing and finalizing settlement modalities, with a consensus to engage in bilateral negotiations aimed at crafting comprehensive settlement agreements that are sustainable amid Nigeria’s fiscal realities and the financial constraints faced by GenCos. Mrs. Verheijen emphasized that this intervention marks the largest-scale debt resolution effort in over a decade. It seeks to eliminate legacy debts that have historically limited the sector’s growth, improved the bottom lines of utility companies, and enhanced the reliability of power supply nationwide. “This is a major step by the federal government towards restoring financial stability and investor confidence within Nigeria’s electricity market,” Murray stated. Furthermore, this initiative aligns with President Tinubu’s strategic vision of modernizing the electricity infrastructure—improving grid systems, expanding distribution networks, and scaling embedded generation—aimed at creating a favorable environment for sustainable growth and private investment. The milestone underscores Nigeria’s commitment to tackling structural bottlenecks, fostering a resilient power sector, and unlocking economic potential through robust government-private sector collaboration.

ASUU Ready to Resume Talks With FG — President

ASUU Ready to Resume Talks With FG — President

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has expressed readiness to resume negotiations with the Federal Government to end the ongoing strike, saying it has received signals from government officials indicating willingness to restart talks. ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, disclosed this on Monday during an interview on Channels Television, where he reaffirmed the union’s commitment to dialogue as the only path to resolving the lingering industrial dispute. ASUU had on Sunday declared a comprehensive two-week strike, suspending academic work across public universities, citing unresolved demands that have lingered for years. In response, the Federal Government argued that it has met ASUU’s demands and has labelled the strike unjustifiable. Further complicating matters, the government threatened to enforce a “no work, no pay” policy, intending to withhold salaries of lecturers who fail to resume work. However, the Nigeria Labour Congress condemned the threat, warning that such a move would undermine fair negotiation and the right of workers to collective bargaining. The labour body also pledged its support for ASUU in its call for improved conditions in the university system. Despite the tense exchanges, Piwuna said the union was encouraged by renewed contact from top government officials seeking a resolution. “Today, I received a call from Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, Chairman of the Federal Government Team, and he’s eager to resume talks with us. I also received another call from the Minister of State for Labour, stating that she’s been directed to intervene and get this matter resolved. ASUU is willing. We are ready and available to discuss this matter once and for all,” Piwuna said. He added that the union expected official communication from the Implementation and Labour Monitoring Committee between Monday night and Tuesday, noting that ASUU would immediately honour any invitation to the negotiation table. “My understanding, as I’m talking to you now, is that between this night and tomorrow, I will get a communication from the secretary of the IALM Committee for a meeting at a date that they will tell us. And I would also hear from the Minister of Labour on what they want to do to resolve this matter. We are ready and willing to go back and talk,” he said. Piwuna, however, emphasised that the strike action was never an easy choice for the union but a last resort to press home demands that had lingered for years. “Strike has never been an option that we exercise so freely. We are willing to talk about all these issues,” he stated. Reacting to the Minister of Education’s recent remarks that all outstanding issues with the union had been resolved, Piwuna challenged the government to clarify why further meetings were being arranged if no unresolved matters remained. He said, “Since the minister has said all the problems have been solved, that there is nothing left, I want Nigerians to ask the Ministry of Labour and the Federal Government negotiating team: if the issues have been solved, why are you going back to talk with ASUU? Are lecturers in LASU or Kogi State University still not being victimised? Has the 2009 agreement been concluded?” The ASUU president reiterated that both lecturers and students were victims of government inaction, stressing that the union’s goal was to restore stability and quality in Nigeria’s public university system through sincere dialogue. “Nigerian students and academic staff union of universities are victims of governments. They are victims of governments in action and several other things. So we see ourselves as victims of this government, the way students see themselves as victims of what is going on,” he said. Already, several universities, including Olabisi Onabanjo University, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Tai Solarin University of Education, and the University of Ibadan, have joined the industrial action, grounding lectures and other academic operations on their campuses.

This was confirmed in a statement on Monday by his family, who said he passed away on October 6 2025 at the age of 80. The family described his passing as a “glorious transition” from a life of devoted service to eternal rest. Ukpai, widely recognised as a spiritual general and founding father of faith, dedicated over six decades of his life to evangelism, dynamic teaching of the Word, and prophetic demonstrations of God’s power. His ministry impacted millions of lives in Nigeria and around the world, shaping destinies and nurturing spiritual growth across generations. “He was a faithful soldier of the cross who devoted his life to spreading the gospel with passion and integrity. “His teachings, prophetic insights, and mentorship have left a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire believers for years to come,” his family said. Over the course of his ministry, Ukpai became known for his fiery evangelistic campaigns, transformative teachings, and commitment to empowering both clergy and lay leaders. No FCT Judge Will Live in Rented Apartment By 2027 – Wike

No FCT Judge Will Live in Rented Apartment By 2027 – Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said that President Bola Tinubu will ensure that no judge of the FCT will be living in a rented apartment by the end of the President’s first tenure. The minister stated this on Monday during the flag-off of the design and construction of residences for the Heads of Courts of the FCT, adding that the era where judges stayed in rented quarters “will come to an end.” “Let me also say what Mr President has done for the FCT. Before the first tenure of Mr President ends, no judge of the FCT will be living in a rented quarter. “I said before the first tenure ends, no judge of the FCT High Court; I didn’t say Federal High Court, I didn’t say National Industrial Court, but of the FCT High Court, will be staying in a rented quarter,” he said. The provision of houses to the heads of courts follows the flag-off of the construction of new magistrate courts in Jabi in September 2025, and the construction of 40 judges’ quarters in Katampe District, flagged off earlier in November 2024. The minister has continued to insist that the provision of infrastructure for the judiciary did not amount to interference by the executive, noting that the Federal Capital Development Authority was responsible for the construction of public buildings in the FCT. Speaking during the flag off on Monday, Wike clarified that the heads of courts, including the President of the Court of Appeal, the Chief Judges of the Federal and FCT High Courts, and the Judge of the National Industrial Court, will retire with the houses constructed for them. He noted that the development was with the approval of the President, adding that the Seal of Oaths had been issued in the names of the individuals. “Let me make it clear. What we are doing today is not just for the heads of courts, and when they retire, they go, no. As they retire, the properties become their own. And that is the approval of Mr President. And that is why we issued the seal of oaths in their names. “So, all of you who are here now, don’t think that when they are leaving tomorrow, you will see in the pages of the newspaper, the Retired Chief Justice of the FCT has taken our house… Please, the policy of Mr President is that these heads of court, as they are retiring, must go home with their houses. And that is the true position,” the minister stated. In his address, the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, said the provision of accommodation for heads of court will enhance, among others, institutional dignity of the judiciary, thereby enabling the discharge of their duties with focus and authority. “The provision of secure and befitting accommodation for heads of cost will enhance operational independence, personal security, and institutional dignity, thereby enabling judicial officers to discharge their duties with great focus and authority. “The issue of corruption will be reduced to the barest minimum because even if you accuse the judiciary of corruption, what are they going to use the money for? For accommodation? It’s already guaranteed,” he said. Fagbemi also thanked President Bola Tinubu and the FCT Minister for the administration’s “clear prioritisation of institutional strengthening, judicial independence and infrastructural investment.”
