Libya Appeals CAF Ruling, Granting Nigeria Match Victory

The Libyan Football Federation has filed an appeal against the recent decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to award Nigeria three points and three goals following a disrupted Africa Cup of Nations qualifier initially scheduled for October 15 in Benina, Libya. The verdict also imposed a $50,000 fine on Libya, citing breaches of CAF regulations in handling the Nigerian team’s arrival and conditions. According to reports from Libyan outlet alwasat.ly, Libya has enlisted Tunisian lawyer Ali Abbas to defend its appeal, which challenges the CAF decision as “unfair,” The Nigerian Football Federation’s complaint led to an investigation by CAF’s disciplinary committee after the Super Eagles endured a reported 20-hour ordeal involving a diverted flight, a lengthy wait at Labraq Airport—300 kilometers from the intended destination in Benghazi—and inadequate facilities, including a lack of food and water. Nigeria’s contingent was eventually forced to abandon the match and return home. CAF’s disciplinary committee, chaired by Ousmane Kane, ruled in favor of Nigeria, citing violations of Article 31 of the Africa Cup of Nations Regulations and Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code. Libya was deemed to have lost the match by forfeit with a 3-0 score awarded to Nigeria. The ruling, if upheld, places Nigeria within reach of qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Morocco, while leaving Libya out of contention with only one point in Group D.

Sack More Ministers, Ndume Tells Tinubu

The lawmaker representing Borno South senatorial district, Ali Ndume, has called for the sacking of more slacking ministers from President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet. Ndume, in a statement on Saturday in Abuja, said some other ministers who were not performing should be sacked. The lawmaker applauded Tinubu’s recent cabinet restructuring, particularly the creation of the Ministry of Regional Development to oversee all regional commissions. He said, “We saw President Tinubu’s cabinet reshuffle last week, which was a masterstroke. “More needs to be done as some ministers are still ‘missing in action. “I’m particularly pleased about establishing the Ministry of Regional Development to oversee regional commissions. The President’s decision to streamline ministries also exemplifies his commitment to reducing the cost of governance.” He encouraged Tinubu to pursue his de-dollarisation policy further by positioning Nigeria to join BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa). De-dollarisation is the process by which countries explore alternative methods for international trade and financial transactions to reduce dependence on the U.S. dollar as the primary global reserve currency. Ndume noted that the move would benefit Nigerian businesses, especially those importing from China, by reducing reliance on the dollar and easing pressure on the naira. The senator also urged Tinubu to convene a national economic conference led by the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, the National Economic Adviser, and notable Nigerian economists to devise local solutions for the Federal Government. Similarly, a former presidential aspirant of the All Progressives Congress, Chief Charles Udeogaranya faulted Tinubu’s cabinet reshuffle, describing it as wrong changes that wouldn’t yield the desired results. Udeogaranya, in a statement in Abuja, said the cabinet reshuffle was carried out in the wrong places, noting that it would not yield any impact on the economy. “I am worried that President Tinubu’s economic team is not even brainstorming, needless to say. “I therefore charge Tinubu to overhaul, reshuffle, and inject new hands with good leadership skills into his economic team if he truly desires a better economy for Nigeria and Nigerians.”   Punch

Withdraw Old Notes Before December Deadline, Reps Tell CBN

The House of Representatives has called on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to begin the gradual withdrawal of old N200, N500, and N1,000 notes from circulation ahead of the December 31, 2024 deadline. During a plenary session on Thursday, lawmakers also urged the CBN to increase the issuance of the new banknotes to ensure a smooth transition. This resolution followed a motion of urgent national importance moved by Rep Afam Ogene, who expressed concern over the lack of public awareness on the looming deadline. Ogene noted that with less than two months to go, the CBN has not initiated any meaningful public sensitization on the change, a crucial step to avoid a repeat of the 2023 chaos when the currency switch caused widespread hardship. Ogene further emphasized that if the CBN does not act promptly, Nigerians may face severe difficulties as the old notes cease to be legal tender on January 1, 2025. He recalled the litigation and public frustration during the 2023 currency transition and stressed that proactive public awareness campaigns, such as jingles, radio, television, and social media postings, should have commenced months ago. The House also directed the CBN to order commercial banks to stop disbursing old notes and only release the new currency, urging a gradual phase-out of the old notes. The House Committee on Banking Regulations was instructed to ensure compliance and report back within 21 days.
