Minister: Power Transmission Line Attacks Constitute Acts Of Terrorism

The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu has declared that attacks on power transmission towers especially in the northern parts of the country are acts of terrorism that would be dealt with by security forces. The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu has declared that attacks on power transmission towers especially in the northern parts of the country are acts of terrorism that would be dealt with by security forces. Chief Adebayo who spoke at a briefing organized by the Transmission Company of Nigeria in Abuja explained while attacks on the transmission lines were not new, the current spate that has left 15 states in the north without grid power supply was done by terrorists. He however assured consumers in the Northern parts of the country that limited supply would be restored by this weekend with repair works on the vandalized Shiroro-Mando line expected to be completed in about six weeks. Chief Adebayo who spoke at a briefing organized by the Transmission Company of Nigeria in Abuja explained that the government was working hard to restore power supply to the north through the eastern corridor. According to him, this effort would make at least 400 megawatts of power available by the weekend. “So, I can assure you that before the end of this week, light will be restored to the north. We are exploring alternative routes, we are hoping that in a matter of days, light will be restored to the north,” he stated. He assured that “We (will) still continue to work on the vandalised lines. This must have affected several parts, not just lines. Amongst the first parts, we know that a lot of single work needs to be carried out before the direct power can show that they are standing properly before the streaming of the light to the south. So, in a matter of two or three days, more than 70 to 80 per cent of the northern part, which is affected, will have light. That is the assurance that we give you. “This is not the first time we will be having issues in that line. We’ve had vandalism there before but nobody noticed it because we fixed it within days. But this time it was more severe and the repairs were delayed because of security threats.” Chief Adebayo added: “We’re only appealing to our brothers to help us protect this equipment because the resources that could have been used for other projects are being channelled into repairing the vandalised infrastructure. We’re working and hopefully, the light will be restored before the end of the week. We’re exploring alternative solutions while we continue to work to fix the vandalised towers,” he added. The minister noted that there is a bill before the National Assembly for capital punishment for perpetrators of vandalism. “We want stiffer punishment for these criminals. Also, we need to look at stopping the sale of scrap metals in the country. They are those who encourage vandalism because they buy these things from criminals cheaply.” Speaking earlier, the Managing Director/CEO, TCN, Engr. Abdulaziz Sule noted that TCN engineers were working hard to get supply back to the north. While lamenting the tough environment in which the TCN workers had to operate, he stated that the areas where the towers were felled were very dangerous. “Shiroro – Mando 330kv line 1 tripped on 9th September 2024, a patrol of the safe area was done, but the faulty section could not be reached due to insecurity. Efforts were made by using local vigilantes who confirmed snap conductors on a tower but they could not identify the tower number. Arrangements were made to use the local group to escort our engineers in the night to effect repairs to evade the bandits in the location. Unfortunately, we did not succeed because the bandits got wind of our intentions and laid siege to the area. “Minimum supply was maintained to the North-West corridor through the second circuit until 13th October 2024 when the second line tripped and failed to stay on trial reclosure. Local vigilantes were again engaged to comb the area but could only access part of the safe area. Hence, TCN solicited the support of the Nigeria Air Force, Kaduna for unmanned aerial surveillance on 17th October 2024 and the impacted towers were identified. They were four (4) in number with 3 collapsed and 1 number twisted. “In another related development, vandalism of Ugwuaji – Apir 330kV lines was reported on 21st October 2024 causing tripping of the lines. Trial reclosure failed and patrol revealed damaged conductors due to vandalism. This compounded the transmission of bulk power to the Northern corridor as these lines serve as a link between the Northern and Southern areas. This outage severely affected the wheeling capacity of TCN. “The area affected has been secured with help of the Nigerian Army and concerted effort is ongoing on one of the lines for restoration. Restoration of one of these lines will allow TCN to wheel about 400MW of power in that corridor. Also, TCN is intensifying efforts to repair and restore the second line on Ugwuaji–Apir on or by Sunday 3rd November 2024. This will allow TCN to wheel a substantial quantum of power through Apir to Jos to Kaduna to Kano. “Conclusively, TCN is working with ONSA for the security of personnel and site on Shiroro – Mando 330kV SC lines for commencement of rehabilitation of impacted towers in this axis”, he explained.

The video showed the visibly angry lawmaker repeatedly slapping and insulting the driver, allegedly because the driver had asked him to come out and collect the snail he was delivering. He also threatened to make the driver “disappear” without facing any consequences. The incident has, however, generated public outbursts with many condemning his action. Following the incident, Ikwechegh was invited by the police for interrogation at its Maitama Divisional Headquarters. The police also slammed the lawmaker for bringing the name of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun into disrepute by daring the driver to make calls through to him after slapping him.

Manchester United Sack Manager Erik Ten Hag

“Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager,” the club said in a statement on Monday. Manchester United have sacked manager Erik ten Hag following the club’s lacklustre start to the season, the fallen Premier League giants announced Monday. United dropped to a lowly 14th in the table after suffering their fourth defeat in nine league games at West Ham on Sunday and have won only one of their last eight games in all competitions. “Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager,” said a club statement. “Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024. “We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.” United added former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who returned to the club as Ten Hag’s assistant in July, would now serve as interim manager “whilst a permanent head coach is recruited.” Even before the West Ham loss, Dutch manager Ten Hag had presided over United’s worst start to an English top-flight campaign since the 1989/90 season. The 54-year-old’s position had been repeatedly called into question after United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe kept the former Ajax boss, on board following an internal review of his position at the end of last season after an eighth-place Premier League finish. Ten Hag was even rewarded with a one-year extension of his contract to June 2026 after a shock FA Cup final victory over rivals Manchester City in May. However, he failed to find the solutions to many of his side’s struggles from last season. Former Ajax boss Ten Hag, who joined United in May 2022, had fiercely defended his record in recent weeks after winning two trophies in his two full seasons in charge. United ended a six-year wait for silverware by beating Newcastle in the 2023 League Cup final. – FA Cup reprieve – The Red Devils also reached the FA Cup final and finished third in the Premier League in an encouraging debut season for Ten Hag. However, the wheels came off in his second season as injuries to key players, the lack of a meaningful impact from big money signings and Ten Hag’s failure to implement a clear style of play led to a number of embarrassing results. United crashed out of the Champions League at the group stage after defeats by Galatasaray and FC Copenhagen, while Bournemouth, Brighton and Fulham were among the other sides to win at Old Trafford in the 2023/2024 campaign. The implementation of a new sporting structure at United, spearheaded by co-owner Ratcliffe, saw widespread change over recent months off the field with the appointment of a new chief executive, sporting director and technical director. But Ten Hag’s surprise victory over Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering City side at Wembley in the FA Cup final, saw him handed a stay of execution. Any hope United’s FA Cup glory could act as a launching pad to more regular success quickly unravelled in the opening weeks of the new season. Liverpool and Tottenham coasted to 3-0 wins at Old Trafford in September, while United failed to win either of their opening two Europa League matches against FC Twente and Porto. For all Ten Hag’s faults, he oversaw just a small period of United’s more general decline since legendary former manager Alex Ferguson retired in 2013. Since the Scot’s departute from the Old Trafford hot seat, five permanent managers have now been dismissed without United even posing a challenge for the Premier League title — a trophy they won 13 time under Ferguson. Strike: SSANU, NASU Shut Down Universities Nationwide

Universities across the country, especially those owned by the federal government, were on Monday shut down by non-academic staff under the aegis of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU and the Non-academic Staff Union of Educational and Allied Institutions, NASU. The step followed the decision of the national leaders of the two unions that their members should start an indefinite industrial action as a result of the failure of the government to pay them four months of their salaries that were withheld following the 2022 strike by university workers. Situation in UNILAG The Branch Chairman of SSANU, the University of Lagos, UNILAG, Comrade Olugbenga Adenaiya, told Vanguard that the development was in line with the directive from their national leaders. “This morning, we held a congress where our members decided to follow the directive of the national leadership. It was unanimously agreed that the strike would be total and indefinite. We cannot be treated like slaves in our country. Remember that we went on strike early this year and it was suspended because the government promised to pay us the withheld salaries, but that has not been the case. “It is just a matter of continuing the strike we suspended the other time. All offices and essential services provided by SSANU and NASU members have been put on hold until further notice,” he said. The development came on the day the university was supposed to start academic activities for the 2024/2025 academic session. Probably in anticipation of this, the management of the university had earlier said lectures would run online for some weeks. Activities in limbo at FUTA Speaking in a telephone chat with Vanguard, the Chairman of SSANU, Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA, Ondo State, Comrade Felix Adubi, also said the non-teaching staff in the institution have heeded the call to go on strike. “We held our congress this morning and it was resolved that we go on strike as directed by our national body. The government cannot say we have not tried enough. We went on strike, just like the teaching staff also did and you have paid some of the withheld salaries of academic staff and what about us? “The saying is that what is sauce for the goose is also sauce for the gander. We won’t budge until our demands are met. The government is yet to address some issues raised in our earlier interactions with them, then this discriminatory stance of petting some people and treating others as inconsequential. We are not going to take it easy with them,” he said. UniAbuja SSANU, NASU in crucial meeting Members of SSANU and NASU at the University of Abuja were on duty and going about their normal activities on Monday despite the nationwide strike declared by the unions’ national bodies. Recall that the two bodies on Sunday called on members to begin an indefinite nationwide strike within campuses of public universities to demand the immediate release of their four months’ withheld salaries. In a statement co-signed by SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim and NASU General Secretary Peters Adeyemi, the two unions said it was appalling that despite several ultimatums issued to the government, no positive result has come in. To this end, they directed their members in all public universities and inter-university centres throughout the country to “hold a joint congress in their respective campuses on Monday, October 28, 2024, and proceed on an indefinite, comprehensive and total strike action as no concession should be given in any guise”. But members of the unions were at work on Monday even as the executive members were seen holding congress, considered to be in adherence to the directive of the national bodies of the unions. It was learnt that the chapters would direct members to proceed on indefinite strike by the directives of national bodies later. As of the time of filing this report, no strike directives had been issued as members were at their duty posts. Contacted to comment on the development, the university’s Director of Public Relations, Dr. Habib Yakoob, confirmed that the strike had not been declared in the university by the two bodies. He said: ”Well, as I speak with you now, I am in my office and some people are here. “But you know today is when the University of Abuja branch of SSANU is going to have a congress to formally declare the strike. Now, whether they have eventually declared the strike in line with the directive of the national body or not is not what I can probably share with you because they are still having the meeting. But at the moment, staff are in their various offices working. I’m here with my staff but that is not out of place since they have not formally declared the strike. They are still having a meeting here.” Recall also that on September 17, 2023, the Joint Action Committee of SSANU and NASU handed the government a three-week ultimatum to pay the outstanding withheld salaries of their members or risk an industrial action. Prior to that both unions had staged several protests and warning strikes to protest their withheld salaries by the government. Recall that in 2022, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, SSANU, NASU and the National Association of Academic Technologists, NAAT, went on strike. ASUU for eight months, SSANU, NASU and NAAT for about five and a half months. However, during the tenure of the immediate past Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, academic staff were paid four months of the withheld salaries, with the promise to also pay others. Mamman had then said that the government would only pay half of the salaries, but nothing has been paid to non-teaching staff up until now, despite presidential directive. Vanguard

Police Probe Abia Lawmaker Over Alleged Assault On Bolt Driver

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has said a member of the House of Representatives, Alex Ikwechegh is currently being interrogated at its Maitama Divisional Headquarters. Ikwechegh, who represents Aba North & South Federal Constituency, was alleged to have assaulted an e-hailing (Bolt) driver, Stephen Abuwatseya. According to a trending video, the lawmaker slapped the driver When he requested the delivery fee, querying if the driver knew who he was talking to. The lawmaker also threatened to make the driver “disappear” without facing any consequences. In a statement on Monday by the command spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, the police said investigation had commenced into the matter. She added that already, preliminary investigation revealed that Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Ikwegh when a dispute arose concerning the method of delivery. Adeh said, “Alexander Ikwegh, who represents the Aba North and South Federal Constituency in Abia State. The incident occurred on October 27, 2024, at a residence on Zamfara Crescent, Maitama, Abuja. “The FCT Police Command has received a report at the Maitama Divisional Headquarters regarding an incident involving a Bolt driver, Mr. Stephen Abuwatseya, and Hon. Alexander Ikwegh, who represents the Aba North and South Federal Constituency in Abia State. The incident occurred on October 27, 2024, at a residence on Zamfara Crescent, Maitama, Abuja. “Preliminary investigations indicate that Mr Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Hon. Ikwegh when a dispute arose concerning the method of delivery. During this altercation, Mr. Abuwatseya was reportedly physically assaulted. The FCT Police Command expresses grave concern over Hon. Ikwegh’s dismissive attitude toward the office of the Inspector General of Police following the incident. Adeh slammed the lawmaker for bringing the name of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun into disrepute by daring the driver to make calls through to him after slapping him. She said, “After allegedly slapping the victim, he reportedly remarked with contempt, “You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police,” demonstrating a troubling disregard for the authority of law enforcement. “Currently, the suspect is at the Maitama Police Station undergoing questioning.” Adeh added that CP Tunji Disu has ordered a thorough investigation into the matter. She said, “Commissioner of Police, FCT, CP Olatunji Disu, has mandated a thorough investigation into the matter. “The Command is committed to conducting an impartial investigation and ensuring justice in all cases. Upon completion of the investigation, appropriate legal action will be taken.”

NASU,SSANU To Begin Indefinite Strike On Monday

The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, NASU and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, have resolved to embark on an indefinite strike commencing Monday. The Joint Action Committee, JAC, of non-teaching staff unions in the universities, which is coordinating the action has directed its members to proceed on the strike nationwide. The fresh strike is hinged on the non-payment of their four months withheld salaries from when they joined an industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU during the President Muhammadu Buhari administration. The strike according to the leaders of the two unions would commence on Sunday night of October 27, 2024. JAC in a circular to all branch Chairman of NASU and SSANU in the universities and inter-university centres, with the title: “Latest development in respect of the withheld four (4) months salaries,” explained that the strike initially billed for 23rd October was rescheduled because of the Trade Group Council meeting of NASU branches on the said date. The circular which was signed by Prince Peters Adeyemi, General Secretary of NASU and Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, SSANU President, explained that the strategic change in timing was for effective coordination and for both Unions to be on the same page. JAC regretted that despite President Bola Tinubu’s approval for 50 percent of the four months’ withheld salaries to be paid, the alleged inaction of the Minister of Finance raised questions about the government’s commitment to resolving the issue. According to the circular, “It is on record that the JAC of NASU and SSANU has issued multiple notices to the government to redress this ugly situation. However, the sincerity of the government to our cause is in doubt. “However, the Trade Group Council Meeting of NASU branches in the Universities and Inter-University Centres has been scheduled to hold on Wednesday 23rd and Thursday 24th October 2024 at Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, and the arrangements for the meeting already concluded. “In view of this, the leadership of JAC has decided that the effective date for the strike be moved to midnight of Sunday, 27th October 2024, to allow the Branch Officers of NASU to be on ground before commencing the strike. “We had to do this strategic change in timing for effective coordination and for both Unions to be on the same page. “We express our deepest appreciation for your steadfast commitment to the leadership and we affirm our determination to persist in this struggle until ultimate victory is secured.”

Court Halts JAMB’s Restriction On Underage Students

The Delta State High Court in Warri has issued an order restraining the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board from implementing its recent policy requiring a minimum admissible age of 16 years for university admissions in the country pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice filed against the board. JAMB, in a statement on October 16, stated that only candidates who will be 16 years old by August 2025 would be admitted to tertiary institutions. This directive was a follow up to the new policy that the ministry of education introduced which states the adoption of 18 years as the minimum age for admission into tertiary institutions. JAMB, however, made an exception for students seeking admission in the 2024/2025 session. Dissatisfied with JAMB’s directive, John Aikpokpo-Martins, a former Nigerian Bar Association chairman, Warri branch, dragged the admission board to court. The sole applicant, Aikpokpo-Martins (for and on behalf of all candidates born on the 1st of September 2009 to the 31st December, 2009, who wrote and passed JAMB exams in 2024), in a suit marked W/311/FHR/2021, sued JAMB and Edwin Clark University as 1st and 2nd respondents respectively. In a ruling delivered on Thursday, Justice Anthony Akpovi granted all the reliefs sought by the applicant, as confirmed by a Certified True Copy (CTC)
