OYRTMA Officer Attacked By Tricycle Rider; Two Arrested

The Chairman, OYRTMA, Major Adekoya Adesagba (rtd) condemned the assault, describing it as a shocking incident. The OYRTMA Chairman vowed that this will not deter officers, saying “we will continue in our efforts to maintain law and order on the roads, despite the challenges”.

BREAKING: State Government Halts House Marking And Demolition On Circular Road

The Oyo State Government has directed officials from the Ministry of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development to cease marking and demolishing buildings beyond a 150-meter boundary along the Senator Rashidi Ladoja Circular Road. This announcement was made during a press briefing on Friday by the Commissioner for Lands, Housing, and Urban Development, Mr. Williams Akin-Funmilayo, alongside Professor Dahud Kehinde Shangodoyin, Commissioner for Public Works and Transport. In his address, Akin-Funmilayo emphasized the administration’s commitment to the welfare of its citizens and reassured affected homeowners that they would receive adequate compensation. The government has commenced an enumeration process to assess properties in the corridor impacted by the road project. Contradicting claims that Governor Seyi Makinde had extended the setback from 150 meters to 500 meters, Akin-Funmilayo clarified that no new land acquisitions had occurred since the governor’s administration began in 2019. He outlined that the original 150-meter boundary was established in August 2006 under Ladoja’s government, and an additional 350-meter setback was later gazetted by the late Governor Abiola Ajimobi in 2018. Akin-Funmilayo reassured residents that the government aims to minimize disruptions during road construction.“ While some buildings may need to be cleared, we assure affected homeowners that proper compensation will be provided. The marking of buildings is primarily for enumeration purposes, to freeze ongoing developments,” he stated. Addressing concerns about potential demolitions, he clarified, “The marking does not imply demolition. It serves two purposes: to identify existing structures before construction begins and to ensure those eligible for compensation are documented. We’ve observed new constructions despite warnings, and those developments may not be compensated.” The commissioner also highlighted that the state intends to preserve existing settlements within the 150-meter buffer, ensuring they are not removed. He invited residents to support government initiatives, reassured them of ongoing communication, and reiterated that, for the time being, no buildings beyond the 150-meter mark would be marked or demolished. Residents, represented by Prince Niyi Fasoye, expressed hopes for favorable engagement with Governor Makinde’s administration regarding the ongoing developments.

I Started Practicing Photojournalism Using My Android phone At NYSC Camp – Nigerian Photojournalist

By Adeleke Maria Citybuzznews in an exclusive interview with Mr Joshua Ojo,an official photographer to the Oyo State Ministry of Public Works and Transport who has been practicing photojournalism in the past 6 years   Can we meet you? My name is Joshua Ojo. I’m the first of five children, a Nigerian Photographer, and a photojournalist. I currently serve as the official photographer for the Oyo State Ministry of Public Works and Transport. Where are you from? I’m from Ogbomoso, Oyo state, Oriire Local government to be precise. What did you study in school? I studied Urban and Regional Planning at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso. When did you start photojournalism? I started my career in photojournalism professionally in the year 2019. When I finished secondary school in the year 2010, my Dad enrolled me immediately in the pre- degree program of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso. Though, I actually put in for Mechanical-Engineering because I fell in love with some of the topics we did in physics and chemistry, but by the time my admission was out, I was given Urban and Regional planning. I really wanted to forfeit the admission then, but people kept reminding me about how difficult it can actually be to gain a University admission and more-so, as at the time, Lautech had to increase their school fees from forty thousand naira to around a hundred thousand naira. So, I also nursed the fear that if I didn’t study then ,I might have to pay more for school fees as I believe it will keep increasing. At that time, I didn’t really have a mind of my own, because I didn’t want to waste the efforts of my parents in getting me schooled, so I studied what was given to me because I believed it was the best choice for me. After my graduation from LAUTECH, I got mobilised by NYSC to Potiskum camp in Yobe State, that was in the year 2018. At the camp, we were advised to be serious with the development of a particular skill we were very passionate about, a skill we can build upon after the compulsory three weeks of regimental in-camp activities. This was, according to the then State NYSC Coordinator – Madam Grace Adzar, because there is no sustainable supply of white-collar jobs to accommodate the ever-increasing number of graduates in Nigeria. I went for the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) lectures, and I put in for Photography which I had been practising with my phone earlier. That was where my photography journey started. When I returned from Camp too, I enrolled for the postgraduate programme of the International Institute of Journalism (IIJ), Abuja at their study centre here in Ibadan, Iyaganku Area to deepen my knowledge of story-telling with my lens. Why did you choose this path? I’ve always had a passion for creativity. As a child, I was drawn to the pictures in newspapers, and I realised that I could better understand stories through images. Photography allows me to tell stories visually, which has always fascinated me. Who were your mentors in photography before you started? In Nigeria, I looked up to and followed photographers like Taibat Ajiboye, Bayo Omoboriowo, Tolani Ali, Ayo Adeagbo, and Samuel Ojo, among others. Can you describe your experience in Photojournalism and your most notable projects or assignments? My experience in photojournalism has been rewarding and full of growth. Some of my most notable projects include capturing images of road constructions, road terminals, and bridges, which have been well-received for their quality and impact. How did you get to work with the Oyo State Ministry of Public Works and Transport? When I was done with my three weeks camping at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Potiskum,Yobe State, my Uncle, RT Hon Joshua Olagunju Ojo, who was the Speaker of Oyo State, made a call to the NYSC State Coordinator to make a case for my redeployment to the Oyo State House of Assembly. Here, I eventually served at the Office of the then Director,Planning Research and Statistics who later got promoted as the Deputy Clerk of the House, Madam Yetunde Awe Oludara (now retired as a Clerk) as a graphic designer and a computer operator, which added to my growing knowledge in photography. By the time I was done with my one-year compulsory service, my uncle was done serving as the Speaker of Oyo State. At that point, I didn’t just want to go back to sit down with my parents and go about in search of a job. I was really disturbed by these thoughts that he gave me headache and sleepless nights for days. So, I approached Madam Yetunde Awe, and she really calmed me down and asked what I wanted and how I wanted to go about it. I explained all to her, and since I’d started my journey in learning more about photojournalism, she referred me to the Oyo State Ministry of Public Works and Transport and that was how I became their official photographer. Is photojournalism a lucrative one? Yes, it is lucrative, especially for those who know their craft. While there are ups and downs, the rewards are worth the efforts. What equipment do you typically use for photojournalism? I use a Nikon Full Frame Camera D750 and a DJI Mini 2 Pro Drone. These are my personal gadgets. Can you describe an example of a challenging situation you faced while on an assignment and how you handled it  One challenging situation was when some “area boys”at Sango, Ibadan, snatched my camera and demanded money to return it. I had to give them some of my transport money to get it back. This experience has taught me to assess the environment before taking out my camera. Can you describe your process for selecting and editing photographs for publication? I choose the most captivating and creative pictures that tell a story at a glance. I often set my camera to take multiple shots per second and then select the best ones during editing. How do you handle criticism or feedback on your work? As much as I get positive feedback almost all the time, I also get negative feedback. I only make … Read more

NAFDAC Shuts Maiduguri Market After Discovery Of Sun-Dried Drugs Post-Flood

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has ordered the immediate closure of the Gomboru drug market in Maiduguri following severe flooding that submerged the area and contaminated the drugs sold within the market. In a statement posted on its official X handle, NAFDAC disclosed that the decision was made after reports surfaced that contaminated drugs, which had been washed and sun-dried for resale, were being sold at the market. “After the recent flooding in Maiduguri that submerged the Gomboru drug market where contaminated drugs were washed and sun-dried for resale, the @DGatNAFDAC ordered the immediate closure of the market to conduct a thorough shop-to-shop removal of these compromised drugs,” the agency wrote. The flooding, which ravaged Maiduguri, was triggered by the rupture of the Alau dam on the Ngadda River, located 20 kilometers (12 miles) south of the city. The floodwaters claimed at least 30 lives and displaced 400,000 residents, leaving large parts of the city and surrounding areas in devastation. NAFDAC’s intervention is aimed at safeguarding public health by preventing the sale and consumption of contaminated drugs. The agency has mobilized teams to inspect the market and ensure the removal of all compromised pharmaceutical products.

Behold An Uninformed ‘Die Hard’ Critic By Kola Ajibola

“Criticisms and commendations are like twins. For any meaningful progress to be made, both must exist side by side.” – Seyi Makinde When I saw the interview by self-proclaimed ‘die-hard critic’ of the Seyi Makinde administration, one Sola Abegunde, I read it in the hopes that there would be some meaningful takeaways that would make the Makinde administration sit up and do better. It is a well-known fact that Makinde has always stated that he is open to listening to constructive criticism and adjust policies and projects based on feedback. Alas, I was disappointed! It seems critics like Abegunde intend to rewrite recent history about governance in Oyo State. To create some fictional universe where lies and deceit are allowed to fly without being shut down. Not this day and not this place. Abegunde started by talking about the sincerity of purpose of Makinde’s predecessors. According to him, you could tie them to their campaign promises. It appears that Abegunde is unaware that Makinde has been implementing roadmaps which are the manifestoes he campaigned with in 2019 (Oyo State Roadmap for Accelerated Development 2019-2023) and in 2023 (Oyo State Roadmap for Sustainable Development 2023-2027). Not only that, Makinde tracks the promises in these roadmaps on an annual basis and publishes the results on his website so people can see what has been achieved and what is still pending. Can Abegunde point to any of Makinde’s predecessors who has been this detailed and transparent about their campaign promises? In lauding Makinde’s predecessors, Abegunde said they excelled in the Education sector with free education, providing text books, exercise books and building infrastructure. He also applauded the 30 people per class policy and payment of WAEC and NECO exam fees. These general statements ignore the fact that the Seyi Makinde-led administration also has a free education policy and provide free text books and exercise books. Additionally, Makinde’s administration has completed 60 model schools and constructed and renovated over 700 classrooms in all 33 local government areas of Oyo State. To address the personnel shortage in the education sector, Makinde’s administration recruited 5,000 secondary school teachers between 2019 and 2023 while an additional 7,500 secondary school, 3,000 non-teaching staff and 7,000 primary school teachers are being recruited this year. These numbers are unprecedented in Oyo State history. Still on the education sector, Abegunde stated that the Abiola Ajimobi administration ‘devised a system that committed stakeholders to education’. He failed to disclose that the Ajimobi administration left an education system with dilapidated infrastructure and over 400,000 out-of-school children, the highest in the South West due to his fee policy for senior secondary school students. Out of this number, over 80,000 have been returned to the classroom by Makinde’s administration and the Oyo State Government is currently implementing the World Bank-assisted Better Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA) programme to return more students to the classroom. According to Abegunde, Seyi Makinde’s predecessors allowed local governments to function while Makinde has killed the local government system in Oyo State. Abegunde is unaware that Makinde’s predecessors from Lam Adesina to Abiola Ajimobi left a backlog of unpaid gratuities and pensions of local government retirees that the Oyo State Government has been working to pay off. In fact, when Makinde assumed office in 2019, local government pensioners had a case in court against the government because of the backlog of unpaid gratuities and pensions. Makinde negotiated with them to pay N250,000 monthly towards the backlog so that they could withdraw the case against the government. This payment has been made monthly since then. Abegunde also alleged without any evidence that Makinde’s administration had taken loans using the accounts of the 33 LGAs as collateral. Such beer parlour talk has no place in fact-based conversations. Oyo State’s debt profile is not a secret. As of 31 March 2024, the latest available data on the Debt Management Office website, Oyo State’s domestic debt was N98.7 billion. Perhaps, Abegunde should familiarise himself with facts and figures about Oyo State so that he can give constructive criticism that can be useful to moving the state forward. In Abegunde’s opinion, projects like the bus terminals and ‘Light up Oyo’ project are white elephant which the Makinde should not have embarked upon. Referring to projects which are yielding returns as white elephant indicates that Abegunde does not know the meaning of the term. The Oyo State Government has repeatedly explained that the use of generators to run the streetlights under the ‘Light up Oyo’ project was a stop-gap measure to get the benefits of the project which in the long-term is meant to be powered by the 11MW Independent Power Project with gas generators as backup. Just about three months ago, Makinde announced that he had signed a $100 million gas project with Shell Gas Nigeria to supply gas in Oyo State. On the Agbowo Shopping Complex, the criticism from Abegunde seems to be a bit late. Things have moved on from the concession agreement that failed. While Makinde’s predecessors that he holds in higher regards did nothing about the shopping complex, Makinde’s plan to revive the moribund structure is back on course after a failed initial attempt. Perhaps, Abegunde can pay a visit to the complex to see the progress being made on its upgrade. Finally, it is laughable that Abegunde believes Makinde’s predecessors fared better than him on road projects. He referred to the 57 km road from Eleyele through Ido to New Eruwa by Lam Adesina’s administration and the dualisation of some major roads by Ajimobi’s administration though the latter completed less than 40 km of major road projects in eight years. He failed to acknowledge that Seyi Makinde’s administration has completed over 330 km of major road projects in five years including the 65 km Moniya-Iseyin Road and the 34.85 km Oyo-Iseyin Road, both federal roads. Abegunde only mentioned the 76.67 km Iseyin-Ogbomoso Road, a new road built from scratch by the Makinde administration as worthy of note. Meanwhile, Makinde’s … Read more

Edo Election: Governor Obaseki Declares Gubernatorial Poll A “Do-or-Die Affair” ,Criticizes Wike

Edo governor, Godwin Obaseki, has insisted that the upcoming governorship election in the state is a “do-or-die affair.” The governor stated that if the All Progressives Congress (APC) were to win, it would spell disaster for the people of Edo. His words: “It’s a do-or-die affair because if they do, we die. The level of impunity, the level of recklessness we see in the opposition party, if they take over Edo State, it is the end.” Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, Obaseki stated that the electorate in Edo State does not need external influence to make informed decisions in the election, referencing Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, who has publicly withdrawn support for the PDP candidate, Asue Ighodalo. “Edo people are not that dumb. They know who to vote for. They don’t require the services of an outsider to make their decisions. Edo people will make decisions this time because they know what they want,” Obaseki said. Obaseki maintained that his disagreements with Wike and other political figures will not hinder the PDP’s chances on Saturday. The governor also addressed criticism from some politicians about how he has utilized government funds, stating, “Some politicians are not happy with me because I have used money from the government’s revenues to solve the needs of the people.”

The state Commandant, Umar Mohammed, in a statement on Thursday in Ilorin said the personnel were drawn from the State Headquarters, Area Commands, and Divisional offices across the state. He said the deployed officers would man various polling units and synchronise their efforts with those of other sister security agencies to ensure a peaceful conduct of the elections. “Our primary responsibility is to create an environment where the local government elections can be conducted peacefully, free from violence, intimidation, ballot-snatching, and any other disruptive action. We will not tolerate any form of political thuggery, violence, hooliganism or any action aimed at disrupting the electoral process,” Mr Mohammed added. The NSCDC state commandant in Kwara State said the officers had been thoroughly briefed and were ready for the assignment. He further said the Corps’ special forces, such as Operation Harmony, Counter-Terrorism Unit, and the Female Squad, would be patrolling the state for further security. He said, “Also, officers from the Anti-Vandal Unit and Critical National Assets and Infrastructure Department were deployed to monitor and protect government assets, to prevent vandals during and after the elections.” The commandant appealed to political parties and citizens to cooperate with security agencies and avoid any action that could undermine the peaceful conduct of the election. The local government elections will hold on Saturday with only five political parties participating. These are the All Progressives Congress, Peoples’ Democratic Party, Allied Peoples Movement, Social Democratic Party and Accord Party.
