Makinde Is A Promise Keeper – Ex-APC Guber Aspirant, Niyi Akintola

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria and former All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant, Chief Niyi Akintola, has described Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State as a man of integrity, calling him a “promise keeper” who has consistently earned the trust of the people. Speaking during an interview on The People’s Verdict, Chief Akintola, the Asiwaju of Idoland, praised the governor’s humility, brilliance, and developmental strides across the state. “Governor Makinde embodies everything called Omoluabi. He is humble, calculating, brilliant, unassuming and a go-getter,” he said. “When we adopted him, I took him to my local government and told him plainly what we expected and what we wouldn’t accept. He has never betrayed us.” Akintola recalled that he had predicted an overwhelming victory for Makinde in Ido Local Government in a past election — a prediction that came to pass. “What he got from Ido was more than what he got from four local governments put together,” he said. Fulfilled Promises and Developmental Impact Despite being an APC chieftain, Akintola noted that Makinde responded to the calls for infrastructure development from opposition quarters, particularly in Ido LGA. “We demanded construction of our road from Omi to Ido, which had been left unattended since 1992. Governor Makinde not only fixed that, but also completed the Owode Housing Estate to Akala Way to Toll Gate stretch. The Apete-Akufo road is also done, and construction from Akufo to Alabata in Akinyele is ongoing,” he stated. He recounted an instance while driving with the governor when Makinde saw roadside traders in Omi Adio and spontaneously promised a modern market — a promise which he said is now 99% completed. Akintola also revealed that although Ido was initially excluded from the Ibadan Circular Road project, the governor found a way to connect the area to the larger network. Widespread Praise and Recognition Sharing a testimony from a visiting Nigerian engineer based in Houston, USA, Akintola said the guest was astonished at the road developments across Ibadan. “He asked, ‘Where did you get this kind of governor? Can’t you lend him to us for a few months?’ I told him our constitution doesn’t allow that,” Akintola said humorously. He also credited Makinde with unlocking the long-delayed World Bank-backed Ibadan Urban Flood Management Project by promptly paying the state’s counterpart funding — enabling extensive dredging, bank reinforcement, and bridge reconstruction to tackle flooding in the city. Security and Other Achievements Highlighting security as another major achievement, Chief Akintola said: “Every three kilometers on the Old Oyo Road, you’ll find Amotekun Corps, Operation Burst, and police personnel with government-supplied vehicles. That’s a big change. I used to personally support the police, but the government has now taken full responsibility.” Citing the Moniya-Iseyin Road, Iseyin-Fapote-Ogbomoso Road, and internal road networks in Ibadan, he lauded the governor’s focus on infrastructure and rated him highly. “If I were to score Governor Makinde, I would give him 85 per cent,” he said. “Our prayer is that he finishes strong, and that God grants Oyo State another prepared leader like him.”

Bodija Explosion: BERA Commends Makinde’s Administration As Victims Begin Receiving Relief Funds •••Appeals For Inclusion Of Excluded Households

Nearly 18 months after the tragic explosion that rocked Bodija Estate in Ibadan, some victims have begun receiving financial support from the Oyo State Government. The Bodija Estate Residents’ Association (BERA), in collaboration with the Dejo Oyelese Vigilante Group (DOVG) and the wider Bodija community, on Thursday through a press conference publicly acknowledged the commencement of the disbursement of the Bodija Explosion Relief Fund, expressing deep gratitude to Governor Seyi Makinde for fulfilling his promise. While addressing the press at the Bodija Recreation Centre, BERA described the intervention as a “long-awaited but critical step towards healing and rebuilding.” The explosion, which occurred at approximately 7:45 PM on January 16, 2024, at 8A and 8B Aderinola Street, was caused by explosives illegally stored in a private residence. Over 300 homes were destroyed or damaged, and several lives lost, leaving the entire Bodija community in trauma. “This disbursement brings hope to those still bearing the emotional, physical, and economic scars of that fateful day,” said Pastor Muyiwa Bamgbose, President of BERA. He praised Governor Makinde for his “compassionate leadership and unwavering commitment to justice,” noting that the relief fund is a testament to responsive governance. The Oyo State Government, through the Relief Fund Management and Disbursement Committee led by the Deputy Governor, approved a total support package of ₦4.08 billion. This followed extensive assessments by professional bodies which identified 318 buildings within the 500-meter blast radius. The committee also recommended financial compensation to: Families that suffered fatalities (5); Registered tenants (102 beneficiaries); Owners of 37 damaged vehicles. While commending the robust technical and humanitarian response, which included efforts by agencies such as NEMA, OYSEMA, UCH, Nigerian Red Cross, DSS, and NSCDC, BERA emphasized its own contributions. These included emergency mobilization, advanced GIS-based impact mapping, transparent beneficiary registration, and organized community support efforts. The explosion response was also bolstered by technical support from the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA), Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS), and Geoinformation Society of Nigeria (GEOSON), Oyo Chapter. The medical community, especially UCH and local private hospitals, were commended for delivering urgent care, medication, and blood transfusions at the height of the crisis. According to BERA, the community also received ₦35.4 million in donations and relief materials, including Federal Government provisions through NEMA and SEMA, which were officially received and equitably distributed in August 2024. However, the statement noted that 17 affected properties were excluded from the official compensation list due to being outside the 500-meter radius, a technical exclusion that, BERA insists, does not reflect the genuine losses suffered by those households. “We respectfully appeal to His Excellency to extend relief support to these households in the spirit of equity and compassion,” the statement read. The disbursement has officially commenced, with many beneficiaries confirming receipt. However, BERA acknowledged that around 20 cases mostly involving fatalities, inheritance disputes, or account discrepancies, would require additional clarification or legal resolution with input from the Ministry of Justice. While expressing cautious optimism, BERA reiterated that “no amount of money can replace the lives lost,” but emphasized the community’s resilience and commitment to a new chapter. As part of this, BERA announced the Smart Bodija Initiative, a visionary, long-term plan for restoration, security, and sustainable development in the estate. In closing, BERA pledged to continue engaging the government and stakeholders until every legitimate victim is compensated. The association also hinted at future advocacy regarding the prosecution of the perpetrators, noting that the case, initially filed at the Federal High Court, has been recharged at the Oyo State High Court. BERA expressed confidence that Oyo State is committed to pursuing justice, including filing extradition papers for suspects believed to be living abroad. “Bodija will never forget, but Bodija will rise again,” the statement concluded.

Eid-El-Kabir: Makinde Charges Muslim To Engage More Prayers For Oyo State, Nigeria

IBADAN – The Oyo State Government has distributed festive commodity advances to 2,500 civil and public servants across the state in preparation for the 2025 Ileya (Eid-el-Kabir) celebration. The distribution was carried out by the state Chairman of the Agricultural Credit Corporation, Taofeek Akeugbagold, at the corporation’s premises at Total Garden in Ibadan, the state capital, on Saturday. According to Akeugbagold, the commodities included rams, bags of rice, vegetable oil, and other food items. He explained that the initiative forms part of Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration’s efforts to support the welfare of civil and public servants, particularly during festive seasons. Akeugbagold noted that “over 5,000 public workers have benefited from the scheme so far,” adding that the commodities were made available at subsidised rates well below current market prices. “The beneficiaries will repay the cost of the commodities through a structured repayment plan spread over three months, with deductions made directly from their salaries.” The chairman emphasised that the intervention was necessitated by the recent surge in prices of essential commodities, especially during festive periods. Governor Makinde directed the corporation to provide this form of economic relief to workers to ensure they celebrate the festival with ease and joy, despite current economic challenges.” He further reiterated the corporation’s readiness to expand the scheme in future editions to accommodate more workers, as part of the government’s broader agenda to promote inclusive economic support and social stability. Akeugbagold also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to prioritising the well-being of its workforce. (PHOTOS): We’ll Airlift Intending Hajj Pilgrims From Ibadan International Airport Soon – Makinde

IBADAN – Oyo State governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, has declared that intending pilgrims performing the 2026 Hajj in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will be airlifted directly from the Ladoke Akintola International Airport, Alakia, Ibadan. The governor, who said this on Wednesday during the farewell ceremony for the Oyo State Hajj 2025 intending pilgrims to Saudi Arabia, held at the Hajj Camp, Olodo, Ibadan, called on them to pray for both Oyo State and the Federal Government in the holy land. He also enjoined them to be good ambassadors of the state. Giving an update on the ongoing upgrade of the airport to international standard, Governor Makinde said the project has been progressing well and has become a reality that will impact the economy of the state positively. He added that his administration has made huge progress on infrastructure development across the state, noting that the ongoing Ibadan Circular Road and the reconstructed Olodo Bridge will complement the government’s efforts on the Hajj Camp project. He said: “I went to the airport two days ago and I can tell you that it is a project God has already completed. The airport is now a reality. I am submitting a letter indicating that by the time we want to do next year’s Hajj, we have the capacity to take off from our airport here. “We are not going to be doing a symbolic take-off, in which you would fly from here to Lagos and take off from that point. No. You will take-off from here till you get to your destination. We hoped for it, worked towards it and God has helped us to actualise the dream. “What flying out of Ibadan Airport during the Hajj operations of next year would do for us is that Customs and Immigration personnel would be posted there. This will definitely make the airport assume both regional and international status. “Also, let me say in response to the request by the chairman of the Pilgrims Welfare Board, that we have made some progress on infrastructure. Few years back, when you wanted to come to the Hajj Camp, there was only one major road but, today, there is an alternative road. “The Circular Road will take you through Badeku from the back of this place as you don’t need to go to Iwo Road. You can also turn right from here to link Moniya Road. “Also, the bridge that didn’t allow us to host this farewell programme here last year has been completed and I have seen it. They will also fix the road beyond this point that we are all standing to complement what the chairman is requesting for. “When I came here for the first time about six years ago, it was very dusty. But we have now made some progress, as the car park has been done and other roads are being fixed. Before this time next year, the whole project would have been completed.” The governor equally charged intending pilgrims to follow laid down rules and avoid any act capable of tarnishing the image of the state and that of their respective families. He commended the chairman of the Oyo State Pilgrims Welfare Board (Muslim Wing), Sheik Wahab Ateere, and members of the board for the successful planning and coordination of the 2025 Hajj operations. He added: “I want to urge you, the pilgrims from Oyo State, to pray for the government while praying for yourselves and families. “Remember to also pray for the Federal Government, because most of the things they do at the federal level always have an impact on what we do at the state level.” Earlier in his welcome address, the chairman, Oyo State Pilgrims Welfare Board (Muslim Wing), Sheikh Atere, appreciated Governor Makinde for his unprecedented developmental strides and continuous support to the Muslim community and the board towards a smooth 2025 Hajj exercise. He explained that with the support of the governor, the state has secured the visas for all the intending pilgrims, who will be airlifted in two batches on 10th and 11th of May, 2025 without any delay. He added that the board has secured befitting accommodations for all the intending pilgrims and made other arrangements successfully. In his lecture, Professor Kamil Koyejo Oloso charged the pilgrims to remain focused and perform the Hajj rites devotedly, spend their money wisely and look out for one another. Also in their separate goodwill messages, the chairman, Ibadan Muslim Community, Chief Bayo Oyero, and Senator Monsurat Sunmonu appreciated Governor Makinde for his unflinching support, charging the intending pilgrims not to use the Hajj operations for social visit or tourists’ adventure but as what it is, one of the pillars of Islam. The event had in attendance the wife of a former Oyo State governor, Chief (Mrs) Mutiat Ladoja, who was represented by Alhaja Iyabo Kobiowu; former deputy governor and PDP Deputy National Chairman (South), Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja; former deputy governors , Engr. Hamid Gbadamosi and Barr. Hazeem Gbolarumi. Others were Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Honourable Adebo Ogundoyin; Secretary to the State government, Prof. Olanike Adeyemo; Chief of Staff to the Governor, Otunba Segun Ogunwuyi and the Head of Service, Mrs Olubunmi Oni, mni. Also in attendance were the Chief Imam of Ibadanland and Grand Imam of Oyo State, Sheik Abdulganiyy Agbotomokekere; League of Imams and Alfas and top government functionaries.

African Countries Have Capacity To Ensure Global Food Sufficiency, Says Makinde•••As Sierra Leonean President, Team Tour Fasola Agribusiness Hub

IBADAN – Oyo State governor, Engr. ‘Seyi Makinde, has said that African countries have the capacity to ensure food sufficiency in the world, apart from meeting their local needs. He stated this on Wednesday, during a high-level panel discussion held at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) Headquarters, Ibadan, as part of the Presidential Visit Programme in honour of the President, Republic of Sierra Leone, Dr Julius Maada Bio. “I have heard about data where they said Africa is about 1.4 billion people, and so also is India and so is China. So, we should look inwards in terms of food production and food security, but the efforts that we need to take on the whole world is not more than what we need for import substitution. “The real catch is that we must not only be satisfied with meeting our local needs, we have the capacity to also take on the world in terms of solving the global food sufficiency challenge,” Makinde said. While sharing his administration’s experiences on the successful and impactful agribusiness initiatives implemented in Oyo State, the governor said that his administration focused on agribusiness knowing that it could be a major driver of the state’s economy and also help to achieve the vision of taking people from poverty to prosperity and tackling hunger. The governor equally stated that his administration had been deliberate about driving agriculture with technology, innovations and data, saying that the tractorisation policy, which helps farmers with a 50 percent subsidy on ploughing, verification of farmers and input support to smallholders were among the deliberate efforts taken to ensure food security and sufficiency. He said: “When we came in, we took agribusiness as one of the major pillars to expand our economy. We had a workshop and took all the stakeholders to the Republic of Benin, because we didn’t want any distraction. “We put our roadmap together and started tracking it. Few things came up at that workshop, which we believed would work for us. “When we started, we saw those things that worked and vice-versa, that was when we started tackling hunger to break the cycle of poverty among our people in the state. “What has also worked for us is utilising technology to verify the actual data. We went to Israel and saw that they could feed themselves while also exporting, but the entire state of Israel does not have more than 10,000 farmers to do all the fanciful things they are doing all over the world. “We saw that we are a little bit far from the mechanisation programme. We used to have a Tractor Unit in Oyo State and we asked them where the tractors were, but they were nowhere to be found. “So, we concluded that we would not invest money again to purchase tractors but would leave the private people to run it as a business and the private people would look after their business by themselves. “Also, on the other side, we thought of what the state could do to ensure they remained in business and we gave some subsidy to the farmers. We said to them that if you want to clear 10 acres, for instance, you bring half of the money, pay those business people having tractors and the government would pay the other half. “We set a target of ploughing 120,000 hectares but the result came out about a week ago and we only met five per cent of that target. It was bad. But the good news is that now we have real data and we know that if we get up to 30 or 50 per cent, we would have moved somewhere. So, you have that option to either invest in tractors or have a model that the private sector can drive.” Sharing the success story of the Fasola Agribusiness Industrial Hub, which has been designated as Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone by the African Development Bank (AfDB), the governor stated that having taken the decision to allow the private sector to drive agribusiness, the government invested heavily on fixing infrastructure. He explained that the big private sector players in the agribusiness sector in the state chose to do business there because of the government’s commitment to infrastructure. “When we went to Fasola, we observed that there had been efforts in the past to revive the Farm Settlement that failed and we said we would upgrade it to a Farm Estate. But there was a problem. The road leading to Fasola, a 34-kilometre stretch of road belonging to the Federal Government, was in a bad state. “We said the first thing we had to do was to fix the infrastructure so that private businesses could come there. So, we fixed the road. “Former President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Amaju Pinnick, is a very big investor in Fasola Agribusiness Hub now and the only thing that brought him there was the infrastructure we have put in place. “It has worked for us that when you fix the infrastructure, private money will come and today, the investment money we put into the infrastructure, when compared to the investments that have been attracted to Fasola, is almost nothing. So, fixing infrastructure is key.” Governors of Borno and Plateau states, Prof. Babagana Zulum and Caleb Muftwang, also shared their experiences in their respective states. In his remarks, the President of Sierra Leone, Dr Bio said that Africa would not be spending over 50 billion dollars annually to import food if its leaders could leverage their political will, technology and requisite funding to ensure food security on the continent. Dr Bio also commended the efforts of the Oyo State governor and his colleagues for their initiatives to drive the economy of their states through agribusiness and charged them to provide more solutions to agricultural challenges in their various states. After the High-Level Panel Discussion, President Bio and his team; Governor Makinde and his team, Plateau State governor, Mr Caleb Muftwang, and his … Read more
