Lassa Fever Death Toll Rises to 252 as Confirmed Cases Reach 1,035 — NCDC

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has recorded 14 new confirmed cases of Lassa fever in epidemiological week 33, raising the total number of confirmed infections to 1,035. The latest cases were recorded between August 10 and August 16, in Ondo, Bauchi, Edo and Benue states, according to the situation report released in Abuja on Tuesday. According to the agency, cumulative deaths increased to 252, while the case fatality rate rose to 24.4 per cent, higher than the 18.6 per cent recorded in 2025. “The 14 new cases represented an increase from four cases reported during epidemiological week 32, when cases were recorded in Ondo and Edo states. “In week 32, cumulative infections reached 1,021, with 240 deaths and a case fatality rate of 23.5 per cent,” it said. The agency said that the week 32 figure represented a decline from 17 confirmed cases recorded during epidemiological week 31, indicating fluctuations in weekly transmission. “By week 33, 23 states had reported at least one confirmed lassa fever case across 117 local government areas. “Bauchi, Ondo, Taraba, Benue and Edo states accounted for 87 per cent of all confirmed cases recorded cumulatively by week 33. “The five states also accounted for 86 per cent of confirmed cases in week 32, maintaining their position as the major affected states. “People aged 21 to 30 years remain the predominant age group affected by lassa fever during both reporting weeks,” the agency said. According to the NCDC, no new healthcare worker infection was recorded during week 32, while week 33 also recorded no newly affected healthcare worker. It said that the agency would continue surveillance and response activities as lassa fever remained a significant public health concern across affected states. NAN

Niger Petrol Tanker Explosion’s Death Toll Rises To 98

Death toll from Saturday’s petrol tanker explosion has risen to 98 with 69 injured and 20 shops burnt to the ground. The figure as of Sunday was 86 with 55 injured even as there was concern that many of the injured victims may not survive, given the grave nature of their injury. The Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, Abdullahi Baba-Arah, made the latest figure available to PUNCH Online in a statement on Monday. He said, “More deaths have been recorded from the fire incident. The latest figure is now 98 deaths, 69 injured and 20 shops burnt down.” Meanwhile, PUNCH Online learnt that so far, out of the 43 injured victims that were admitted at the General Hospital Suleja, seven of them have died due to the gravity of their injuries while three of the injured patients out of the 23 admitted at the General Hospital, Sabon-Wuse have also died. Ten of the patients admitted at the General Hospital Suleja were referred for specialist care in Abuja while three of them were satisfactorily treated and discharged to recuperate at home. The state government has assured all that it would defray the cost of treatment of the injured victims while the Federal Government has also said it would cater for the cost of treatment for all the injured victims referred to the FCT for more intensive treatment. The fire incident occurred on Saturday morning when a speeding tanker loaded with fuel crashed and spilt all the fuel on the road. Indigent residents of the state rushed to scoop the fuel on the road when the tanker caught fire and burnt most of them. The dead have already been buried in a mass grave. Condolences have been pouring in from across the country over the tragedy while the Federal Government has set up a committee to probe the cause of the tragedy. Punch

Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has donated N100 million to assist the survivors and families of the deceased from the recent tanker explosion in Majiya town, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State. The tragic incident, which occurred on Tuesday night, claimed the lives of over 150 people and left more than 50 others injured. Governor Yusuf made this announcement during a sympathy visit to Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State in Dutse. Expressing his profound grief over the devastating event, Yusuf described the explosion as one of the greatest tragedies to befall Jigawa and Nigeria as a whole. What he said : “On behalf of the government and good people of Kano state, I’m here to commiserate with you over this unfortunate and tragic fire incident that cost the lives and properties of innocent citizens of your state in Majiya town of Taura local government. “It is unfortunate that the Jigawa government and indeed Nigeria lost over 100 lives of innocent citizens. “The people of Kano and Jigawa are brothers and sisters, therefore, on behalf of the government and good people the state, I wish to announce a token donation of N100 million so that the government can take care of victims at hospital, as well as the families of those that departed,” Yusuf said. What to know Governor Namadi, in his response, expressed deep gratitude to Governor Yusuf and the people of Kano for their generosity and compassion. “On behalf of the government and the people of Jigawa, I want to thank you for this show of solidarity and brotherhood. Your support means a lot to us during this difficult time,” said Namadi. The ill-fated event was caused by an overturned fuel tanker which exploded in northern Nigeria on Tuesday night, resulting in the deaths of at least 153 people who had gathered to collect leaking petrol. The explosion occurred in the town of Majia, Jigawa State, at approximately 23:30 local time, following the crash of the tanker, which had been en route from Kano to Nguru in Yobe State. Authorities had cordoned off the site and warned the crowd to stay away from the area, but were unable to disperse the growing number of people before the explosion occurred. According to police spokesman Lawal Shiisu Adam, officers attempted to control the situation, but the crowd continued to approach the tanker, leading to the tragic outcome. In addition to the fatalities, around 100 individuals were seriously injured and taken to nearby hospitals, with many in critical condition. The incident has prompted renewed concerns over safety measures and crowd control at accident scenes involving hazardous materials. The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has also launched an investigation into the cause of the tanker explosion. In a statement, the NSIB Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Mrs. Bimbo Oladeji, said the bureau is “aware of the tragic petrol tanker explosion” and is working to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the accident.
