Trump Bans Citizens Of Chad, Congo, 10 Others From Entering US

President Donald Trump has signed a new proclamation barring citizens from 12 countries from entering the United States, citing national security concerns. The full travel ban affects nationals from Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen. The restriction will take effect on June 9, 2025. In addition to the full bans, the proclamation imposes partial restrictions on citizens of Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela. There are some exemptions, including athletes travelling for major sporting events, some Afghan nationals and dual nationals with citizenship in unaffected countries, according to the BBC. Trump stated that the measure is intended to prevent individuals considered potential security risks from gaining entry into the US. “We cannot have open migration from any country where we cannot safely and reliably vet and screen,” he said in a video message posted on X on Wednesday. According to the White House, the countries facing the harshest restrictions were deemed to have a “large-scale presence of terrorists,” poor cooperation on visa-related security measures, and inadequate systems for verifying travelers’ identities. The administration also cited issues such as poor record-keeping of criminal histories and high visa overstay rates as contributing factors. The new directive builds on Trump’s broader immigration crackdown initiated at the beginning of his second term. On January 20, the president signed an executive order mandating stricter security checks for foreign nationals and instructing federal agencies to review which countries should face entry suspensions due to inadequate vetting procedures. This move echoes Trump’s controversial travel ban during his first term, which initially targeted seven predominantly Muslim countries and was upheld by the US Supreme Court in 2018. The ban was later repealed by President Joe Biden in 2021, who described it as “a stain on our national conscience.” Punch

It was a terrifying sight.” As of press time, the circumstances behind the unfortunate incident were still sketchy as the investigation continues. Oyo Seals Off Collapsed Building Under Construction

The Oyo State Government has sealed off a collapsed building under construction belonging to a popular restaurant located in Dugbe area of Ibadan. Commissioner for Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Mr. Williams Akin-Funmilayo, who spoke with newsmen after an on-the-spot assessment of the collapsed building, said the action was to ensure safety of lives and properties. He added that sealing off of the collapsed building would also allow the government to assess the situation and come up with an adequate report on the cause of the incident. The commissioner noted that some of the building materials used for the construction of the collapsed building appeared to be sub-standard and of low quality. He declared that an integrity test would be carried out on the collapsed building and on other branches of the restaurant in the state to avoid a recurrence. Akin-Funmilayo stated that the outcome of the test would determine the next action of the government. He said: “Earlier this morning, the message got to me that there was a building collapse at Dugbe and we came over here to see things for ourselves. “We thank God that there is no loss of life. “After seeing the extent of the collapse, we decided that it has to be sealed off because we have to prevent loss of life. “Professionals from the Ministry of Works would have to come and carry out an integrity test after which the report would advise us on the next action to be taken on the property. “If they can continue, we will let them know and if it has to be totally brought down, we will let them know as well. “From what we have seen, substandard materials were used and this has also been corroborated by our professionals from the Ministry of Works. The Director of Public Building has equally looked at it and confirmed it. “However, we will still go for an integrity test so that absolute professionalism can be ensured and the result thereafter will determine the next action we will take. “There is an approval for the design. The building has been in existence before but there is a renovation coming up. From the information made available to me, there is a company trying to have an outlet here and they are the people trying to do the renovation. But we never expected what actually happened. “In addition, this outlet belongs to a popular eatery outfit. I believe the same Engineer doing this place handled the other outlets they have in Ibadan and other cities. But, for this to have happened, it means that we have to carry out an integrity test on all their buildings. “If we find out that the other outlets fail the integrity test, we will bring them down, because we cannot afford to toy with the lives of our people.” Signed

Allow Polytechnics To Award Degrees, NAPS Urges Tinubu, NASS

The National Association of Polytechnic Students has called for the legislative upgrade of polytechnics to degree-awarding institutions. In a statement on Monday signed by its President, Comrade Eshiofune Oghayan, the association said the upgrade will resolve the lingering dichotomy between Higher National Diploma and Bachelor of Science holders. “We urge Mr. President and the National Assembly to empower polytechnics to award Bachelor of Technology and Bachelor of Science in Technology degrees. This reform will resolve the lingering dichotomy between HND and BSc holders,” the statement said. The students further proposed a Student Insurance Scheme, mental health awareness campaigns, and improved campus security measures as part of their policy advocacy. NAPS also outlined its commitment to supporting the administration while also holding government officials accountable for any actions that may undermine the President’s vision for education. The association proposed several initiatives, including a Student Insurance Scheme, mental health campaigns, and campus security advocacy. It also declared June 12 as “Adupe Day” to honour President Bola Tinubu’s record investment in education, with a mass march planned across the country. The students have declared the day “Adupe Day” — a Yoruba word meaning “thank you” — to celebrate what they described as the administration’s unprecedented financial commitment to education. The association also commended the Tinubu-led administration for allocating N2.52 trillion to the education sector in the 2025 national budget — a 133% increase compared to 2023. NAPS also highlighted other key achievements, including the approval of N683.4 billion for tertiary education interventions, the disbursement of over N104 billion through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, and the launch of the 3 Million Technical Talent initiative aimed at bridging digital skill gaps. “In clear contrast to past administrations, which often approached education as a footnote in national development, President Tinubu has demonstrated that education is the foundation, not the filler. “As the National Association of Polytechnic Students, we say clearly that we will continue to support this administration because it has supported us. We are your allies, not your accomplices. “We hereby proclaim June 12, 2025, as a day of historic appreciation Nigerian students across all campuses, polytechnics, colleges, and technical institutions will embark on a One Million Student March,” the statement stated. NAPS stated that the proposed “One Million Student March” is expected to draw participants from polytechnics, technical institutions, and colleges across the country, adding that the event will be a peaceful demonstration of gratitude. I Made PDP A Major Political Force, Says Wike

The Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has said that he was instrumental in making the Peoples Democratic Party popular and establishing it as a major political force at both national and state levels. Wike made the remarks during his monthly live media chat in Abuja on Monday. Responding to criticisms from Chief Bode George, a member of the PDP Board of Trustees, over the sealing of the party’s National Secretariat, Wike advised the elder statesman to “sit down in your house and read your newspapers” if he had no occupation. He explained that neither he nor the party could pay the ground rent because the property was not registered in their names. “I cannot pay because, first of all, it is not in my name. They cannot pay because the property is not in their name. “If an elderly man has no job, he should sit at home and read his newspapers. Bode George said PDP made me by giving me a national profile, and I agree. But the party does not make you; you are the one who makes the party win elections. “Ask Bode George who PDP has made popular in Lagos since 1999? You are speaking to me, someone who has laboured and campaigned for the party to become the major political force at both state and national levels. “Meanwhile, in his state, the party has been struggling daily. Even when Jonathan was in power, we knew what we did for PDP to take over power, but it did not succeed,” he stated. Punch

Sallah Celebration: Makinde Supports Workers With Subsidised Rams, Rice

Birthday: Aare Olayinka Segelu Celebrates Seasoned Journalist, Mayor Isaac Brown

IBADAN – The Oyo State Government has distributed festive commodity advances to 2,500 civil and public servants across the state in preparation for the 2025 Ileya (Eid-el-Kabir) celebration. The distribution was carried out by the state Chairman of the Agricultural Credit Corporation, Taofeek Akeugbagold, at the corporation’s premises at Total Garden in Ibadan, the state capital, on Saturday. According to Akeugbagold, the commodities included rams, bags of rice, vegetable oil, and other food items. He explained that the initiative forms part of Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration’s efforts to support the welfare of civil and public servants, particularly during festive seasons. Akeugbagold noted that “over 5,000 public workers have benefited from the scheme so far,” adding that the commodities were made available at subsidised rates well below current market prices. “The beneficiaries will repay the cost of the commodities through a structured repayment plan spread over three months, with deductions made directly from their salaries.” The chairman emphasised that the intervention was necessitated by the recent surge in prices of essential commodities, especially during festive periods. Governor Makinde directed the corporation to provide this form of economic relief to workers to ensure they celebrate the festival with ease and joy, despite current economic challenges.” He further reiterated the corporation’s readiness to expand the scheme in future editions to accommodate more workers, as part of the government’s broader agenda to promote inclusive economic support and social stability. Akeugbagold also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to prioritising the well-being of its workforce. One of the beneficiaries, Kunle Adeyemo, expressed gratitude to the government for the timely intervention. This initiative will enable my family to partake in the Ileya celebration in a happy and dignified manner,” he added. Punch

France To Ban Smoking Publicly July 1

France will ban smoking in outdoor areas where children are likely to be present, starting July 1, 2025. This includes beaches, parks, bus stops, school entrances, and sports venues. Health and Family Minister, Catherine Vautrin, made this known on Thursday, May 29. “Tobacco must disappear where there are children. “The freedom to smoke stops where children’s right to breathe clean air starts,” Vautrin told Ouest-France newspaper. The rule will also stop students from smoking in front of schools. Anyone who breaks the rule may be fined up to €135 ($154). However, the ban does not apply to France’s famous outdoor cafe terraces or to electronic cigarettes. France already bans smoking in many public places like workplaces, airports, train stations, and playgrounds. Anti-smoking groups have long called for wider restrictions. According to the World Health Organisation, about 35 per cent of France’s population smokes—more than the average in Europe (25 per cent) and around the world (21 per cent).
