Police Beef-up Security As Traders Besiege, Chant IPOB Song At Market Gate

AWKA – THE Anambra State Police Command has beefed up security at the gates of Onitsha main market which was ordered to be shut down on Monday by Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo on Monday following the traders insistence on observing every Monday Sit-at-Home. The police spokesman Tochukwu Ikenga, a superintendent of police said the “market has been re-closed in compliance with the directive of the Anambra State Government, as approved by His Excellency, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, CFR, Executive Governor of Anambra State”. According to the police, in furtherance of this directive, adequate security has been deployed in and around the market, as well as other strategic locations within Onitsha, by the Police in collaboration with other security agencies, to maintain law and order and prevent any breach of public peace. Early Tuesday morning, traders were seen and mingling with a crowd chanting solidarity songs in support of Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB). They gathered around the market on a viral video and were addressed and sensitised on the need to cooperate fully with government directives in the interest of public safety, security, and economic stability, according to the police. The Command assured members of the public that the situation in Onitsha and across Anambra State remained calm and under control, while the police continued to monitor the situation to forestall any breakdown of law and order

FCT Traders To Shut Shops As Tinubu Commissions Abuja Road Friday

Residents and commuters in the Federal Capital Territory are advised to brace up for temporary traffic disruptions on Friday, as the Apo-Wasa Road will be closed from 11am to 4pm ahead of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s visit to inaugurate a major infrastructure project in the city. According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the FCT Minister, Lere Olayinka, traders, mechanics, and shop owners at the Apo Mechanic Village have voluntarily agreed to shut down operations for the day. Olayinka confirmed that the road closure is necessary for the security and smooth flow of the event. According to the Federal Capital Territory Administration, the move is to enable them “give President Tinubu a rousing welcome and participate fully in the commissioning ceremony.” The project slated for commissioning is the newly completed Left-Hand Service Carriageway of the Outer Southern Expressway Stage II, stretching from the Ring Road I Junction to Wasa Junction. The event will take place at 2:30pm on Friday with Tinubu expected to personally perform the inauguration. “The Apo-Wasa Road, which is to be commissioned by President Bola Tinubu tomorrow, will be closed to vehicular movement between 11am and 4pm,” Olayinka said. He added that traffic enforcement personnel would be deployed to critical areas to ease movement and redirect motorists to alternate routes. “Motorists are therefore urged to use other routes between 11am and 4pm tomorrow, when the Apo-Wasa Road will not be accessible. “We appeal to road users that will be affected by this temporary closure to bear with the government while using alternative routes,” the statement read. Oyo Gov’t Reabsorbs Traders Into New Bola Ige International Market

The Oyo State Government said it has accommodated former occupants into the redeveloped Bola Ige International Business Complex, New Gbagi, Ibadan. Commissioner for Trade, Industry, Investment, and Cooperatives, Mr. Adeniyi Adebisi made this known while speaking with journalists in Ibadan on Monday. He said that the project has been completed, and former occupants have been accommodated in the Government’s share of the project as promised. He said that the Oyo State Government has demonstrated its commitment to the welfare of traders by ensuring that they are not displaced during the redevelopment process. According to him, “The Ministry enumerated the present occupants of the project site to accommodate qualified ones among them upon completion of the second phase.” He added that the Ministry had series of engagements with all stakeholders, including market elders, market executives, zonal leaders and the developers handling the second phase of the international market to benefit everyone and as well be on the same page. “However, it is essential to note that no single trader has come forward to the complain about the project or the developer. This suggests that the majority of traders are satisfied with the Government’s initiatives and are eager to benefit from the redevelopment” he said. The Commissioner reiterated that the Oyo State Government has a proven track record of supporting traders and business owners, which include the provision of infrastructure, access to finance, and training programmes. He added that these efforts have contributed significantly to the growth and development of businesses in the state while traders are not left behind in the development process, urging those who are yet to benefit from the Government’s initiatives to come forward and engage with the Ministry. Hon. Adebisi underscored the State Government’s dedication to economic development and traders empowerment through the redevelopment of the Bola Ige International Business Complex. He stressed that these initiatives have been positively received by most traders, while also acknowledging and appreciating government’s efforts.
