LG Poll: Kaduna Residents Comply With Movement Restrictions

Kaduna State residents on Saturday complied with the movement restriction imposed by the state government to ensure peaceful and orderly conduct of the local government elections. The usually bustling streets of Kaduna metropolis were deserted as eligible voters cast their ballots across the state. Shops and fuel stations were shut to residents. PUNCH Online reports that the Kaduna State Security Council had announced a restriction of movement from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 19, 2024, to prevent potential security breaches. The commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, had explained that the restriction was necessary to guarantee the success of the elections. “The restriction of movement is aimed at preventing any individual or group from disrupting the electoral process. We want to ensure that the elections are conducted peacefully and without any incidents,” Aruwan had said. Residents heeded the warning, staying off the streets while those eligible and willing to exercise their civic responsibility went to their voting centers to cast their votes. However, some voting centres experienced delays, with officials and materials yet to arrive as of noon. A troubled voter lamented, “Up till now, no SIECOM officials and voting materials for votes to commence. We have been waiting since morning, and it’s disappointing to see that the officials are not here yet.” James Alechenu, another voter, expressed frustration over the delay. “They (SIECOM) know what they are doing. The next thing we will hear is that the ruling All Progressives Congress has cleared all the 23 Local Government Areas of the state.” Despite these challenges, the elections took place across 255 wards and 23 local government councils. Road users, especially those travelling from other parts of the state, were stopped and searched by police. However, there was scant police presence in major areas such as Barnawa, Narayi, and along the Kachia roads. The elections are crucial for the state’s development, and the government is committed to ensuring their success. The security situation was generally peaceful, with no major incidents reported. CNG-Powered Vehicles’s Safety Measures To Follow To Avoid Explosion

The CNG-powered vehicle runs on compressed natural gas (CNG) as its fuel source instead of gasoline or diesel. CNG is primarily composed of methane and is considered a cleaner-burning alternative, producing fewer emissions compared to fossil fuels. These vehicles can be either designed specifically for CNG or modified to run on it. Below Are Key Features of CNG-Powered Vehicles Fuel Efficiency: CNG vehicles typically offer good fuel efficiency and lower operating costs due to the lower price of natural gas compared to gasoline. Environmental Benefits: CNG produces lower levels of harmful emissions, such as carbon monoxide and particulate matter, making it more environmentally friendly. Tanks and Storage: CNG is stored in high-pressure tanks, which must be made of strong materials to withstand the pressure and designed according to safety standards. Engine Modifications: Some vehicles may require modifications to their engines to run on CNG, though many manufacturers produce dedicated CNG models. Check-out Types of CNG-Powered Vehicles Below Passenger Cars: Many manufacturers produce CNG versions of standard cars Buses: Public transit agencies often use CNG buses for lower emissions. Trucks: CNG is increasingly used in commercial vehicles for freight transport. Follow these guidelines to avoid explosions and enhance safety with CNG vehicles,: 1. Regular Maintenance: Undergo regular checkups and maintenance sessions with authorized specialists to ensure that CNG system is operating properly. 2. Leak Checks: Regularly search for leaks of the fuel system components, such as tanks, valves, and hoses, with the help of visual inspections. If any part is le aking, a soapy water solution test should be done to see its location clearly, blowing up bubbles. 3. Tank Integrity: Making sure that the CNG tank looks fine and costs nothing thus, because it doesn’t have any dents, corrosion, or damage. Tanks must be run for tests when required by the law. 4. Proper Filling: Abide by the filling specs to ensure the tank is not overfilled and pressure is kept within the safe range when filling the tank. 5. Emergency Preparedness: Be prepared by knowing emergency procedures for a gas leak or fire. The fire extinguisher should have extinguishing efficiency when used on flammable gas fires and also be green in color. 6. Ventilation: Remember, the most important thing to consider here is if CNG tanks are safely stored, filled in well-ventilated places. This means no dangerous gases release from them. 7. Secure Components: All parts, including valves and connections, should be adequately clamped down to prevent any potential leaks. 8. Driver Training: Safety training for drivers and maintenance personnel should cover a variety of materials, including identifying the dangers and following the correct methods to handle these dangerous gases. 9. Regulatory Compliance: Adhere to all the local as well as national regulations concerning the operating and maintenance of CNG vehicles. Note that following the above mentioned safety measures is the only technique that can lead you to the level of safety where you do not have nearly any risk of explosion.

Renowned Nigerian Filmmaker Biyi Bandele, Commits Suicide

New revelations have emerged regarding the death of Biyi Bandele, the acclaimed Nigerian filmmaker and novelist, who tragically took his own life in August 2022. The news follows an announcement made by his daughter, Temi Bandele, at the time of his passing, which occurred at the age of 54. The circumstances surrounding his death were not disclosed initially. According to a report by The Guardian UK, Bandele’s suicide came a day after an engaging conversation with his editor, Hannah Chukwu, about his latest novel, *Yorùbá Boy Running*. Following their discussion, he sent her a revised manuscript and, the next day, took the irreversible step of ending his life. The Guardian’s report highlighted the profound loss felt by the literary and film communities, as Bandele left behind a remarkable and diverse body of work. His contributions included the film adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s *Half of a Yellow Sun*, which took seven years to complete, as well as stage adaptations of renowned works such as Chinua Achebe’s *Things Fall Apart*, Aphra Behn’s *Oroonoko*, and Federico García Lorca’s *Yerma*. Additionally, he authored several novels, including the poignant *Burma Boy*, which chronicles the harrowing experiences of his father as a British soldier during World War II. Temi Bandele reflected on her father’s final project, expressing her belief that he felt fulfilled with *Yorùbá Boy Running*, sensing it would be his last literary statement. “He wanted it to be the beginning of multiple conversations that would happen when he wasn’t here,” she noted, underscoring the depth of her father’s creative vision. Biyi Bandele’s sudden passing shocked friends, family, and colleagues worldwide, who have been mourning the loss of a talented storyteller and innovator in the arts. Born in Kafanchan, Kaduna State, to parents from Abeokuta, Ogun State, Bandele pursued his passion for the arts by studying Dramatic Arts at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University). His poignant storytelling abilities first garnered recognition when he won the BBC Playwriting Competition, after which he relocated to England to further his career. Before his death, Bandele directed and adapted the screenplay for *Elesin Oba: The King’s Horseman*, based on Wole Soyinka’s classic drama, which was produced for EbonyLife Films and released shortly after his passing on October 28, 2022. His legacy continues to inspire and resonate within the creative communities he left behind.

Anambra Evacuates Residents From Flood-Prone Areas

The Anambra State government has commenced the immediate evacuation of those living in riverine areas due to a rapid rise in water levels in the Niger and Benue rivers over the past few days. The Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Chief Paul Odenigbo, disclosed this while speaking with journalists in Awka, the Anambra state capital. On Thursday, the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) issued a fresh alert urging communities along coastal lines to relocate without further delay. Chief Odenigbo stated that the state government had provided the necessary support to relocate people to safer areas and mitigate the worsening impacts of the floods as rainfall persists. He noted that in some local governments, plans had been finalised to use boats to evacuate over 3,000 inhabitants willing to move to higher ground. According to him, Governor Charles Soludo has made available essential items for those in various holding camps in the state to ensure they are comfortable during their stay. Items distributed to the local government areas of Ogbaru, Anambra West, and Ayamelum include blankets, mattresses, buckets, and cartons of soap and detergents. The SEM boss stated that the camps had been well prepared with conveniences, water supply, and other relevant logistics provided by the government. Chief Odenigbo urged the public to heed the latest warnings from relevant agencies and to pack essential items such as certificates, documents, and medications that they will need while in the camps. Your support means a lot to us during this difficult time,” said Namadi. The ill-fated event was caused by an overturned fuel tanker which exploded in northern Nigeria on Tuesday night, resulting in the deaths of at least 153 people who had gathered to collect leaking petrol. The explosion occurred in the town of Majia, Jigawa State, at approximately 23:30 local time, following the crash of the tanker, which had been en route from Kano to Nguru in Yobe State. Authorities had cordoned off the site and warned the crowd to stay away from the area, but were unable to disperse the growing number of people before the explosion occurred. According to police spokesman Lawal Shiisu Adam, officers attempted to control the situation, but the crowd continued to approach the tanker, leading to the tragic outcome. In addition to the fatalities, around 100 individuals were seriously injured and taken to nearby hospitals, with many in critical condition. The incident has prompted renewed concerns over safety measures and crowd control at accident scenes involving hazardous materials. The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has also launched an investigation into the cause of the tanker explosion. In a statement, the NSIB Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Mrs. Bimbo Oladeji, said the bureau is “aware of the tragic petrol tanker explosion” and is working to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the accident. The investigation aims to prevent similar incidents in the future by identifying any lapses in safety protocols related to the transport of hazardous materials.   Nairametrics

Israel Conducts Raids On Gaza After Killing Hamas Chief Sinwar

Israel conducted raids on Gaza Friday, pressing its year-long war to crush Hamas after dealing it a massive blow with the killing of its leader, Yahya Sinwar. Hailing the killing of Sinwar, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the war sparked by Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack was not over, but added that it was “the beginning of the end”. He called the death of Sinwar, mastermind of the deadliest attack in Israeli history, an “important landmark in the decline of the evil rule of Hamas”. I want to sell out 02 Arena for Yoruba language and act – Yusuf Gemini Balogun, oral poet0:03 / 1:00 Chief of Hamas in Gaza at the time of the attack, Sinwar had become the militant group’s overall leader after the killing in July of its political chief, Ismail Haniyeh. US President Joe Biden, whose government is Israel’s top arms provider, said: “This is a good day for Israel, for the United States, and for the world.” “There is now the opportunity for a ‘day after’ in Gaza without Hamas in power, and for a political settlement that provides a better future for Israelis and Palestinians alike.” – Air strikes – Hamas’s October 7 attack resulted in the deaths of 1,206 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of official Israeli figures that includes hostages killed in captivity. Militants also took 251 people hostage during the attack. Ninety-seven remain in Gaza, including 34 who Israeli officials say are dead. The killing of Sinwar did not spell an end to Israel’s air strikes on Gaza, with several raids overnight and early Friday pummelling the territory, according to an AFP journalist on the ground. According to Gaza’s civil defence agency, rescuers recovered the bodies of three Palestinian children from the rubble of their home in the north of the territory after it was hit at dawn. The Israel military said it was pressing its operation in Jabalia, one of the focuses of the fighting in recent weeks, and where strikes on Thursday killed at least 14 people, according to two hospitals. A UN-backed assessment has found some 345,000 Gazans face “catastrophic” levels of hunger this winter. With the civilian toll in Gaza mounting, Israel has faced criticism over its conduct of the war, including from the United States. Israel’s campaign to crush Hamas and bring back the hostages seized by militants has killed 42,438 people in Gaza, the majority civilians, according to data from the health ministry in the Hamas-run territory, figures which the UN considers reliable. Israeli military chief Herzi Halevi vowed to keep fighting “until we capture all the terrorists involved in the October 7 massacre and bring all the hostages home”. – ‘Opportunity’ – Some Israelis hailed the news of Sinwar’s death as a sign of better things to come. “I am celebrating the death of Sinwar, who has brought us nothing but harm, who has taken people hostage,” said one Israeli woman, Hemda, who only gave her first name. Attending a Tel Aviv rally demanding the hostages’ release, 60-year-old Sisil, who also gave only her first name, said his killing presented a “once in a lifetime opportunity” for “a hostage deal to end the war”. According to a statement from Netanyahu’s office, Biden called him to congratulate him on Sinwar’s killing, with the two leaders vowing to seize “an opportunity to promote the release of the hostages”. Campaign group the Hostages and Missing Families Forum urged the Israeli government and international mediators to leverage “this major achievement to secure hostages’ return”. Andrew Miller, until recently a senior State Department official dealing with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, said Israel was unlikely to agree to a negotiated solution to end the war and free the hostages just yet. “I’m not especially optimistic that Prime Minister Netanyahu and his coalition will do this. Another Israeli government might, but they just haven’t… demonstrated a real interest in this track,” said Miller, now at the left-leaning Center for American Progress. But he said Sinwar’s killing might change “the public conversation” and deprive Netanyahu of a stated reason for not reaching a deal with Hamas. – ‘Major achievement’ – With Hamas already weakened more than a year into the Gaza war, Sinwar’s death deals an immense blow to the organisation, but whether it will trigger a shift in its own strategy is unclear. It is also unclear whether his successor will be named in Qatar, where Hamas’s political leadership has long been based, or in Gaza, which is the focus of the fighting. The Israeli military said Sinwar was killed in a firefight in southern Gaza’s Rafah, near the Egyptian border, while being tracked by a drone. It released drone footage of what it said was Sinwar’s final moments, with the video showing a wounded militant throwing an object at the drone. Israel is also fighting a war in Lebanon, where Hamas ally Hezbollah opened a front by launching cross-border strikes that forced tens of thousands of Israelis to flee their homes. Hezbollah said late Thursday it was launching a new phase in its war against Israel, and that it had used precision-guided missiles against troops for the first time. On the same day, Israel conducted strikes on the south Lebanese city of Tyre, where the militant group and its allies hold sway. The Israeli military said five soldiers were killed in combat in southern Lebanon, taking to 19 the number of troop deaths announced since Israel launched incursions into Lebanon last month. In Lebanon, the war since late September has left at least 1,418 people dead, according to an AFP tally of Lebanese health ministry figures, though the real toll is likely higher. The war has also drawn in other Iran-aligned armed groups, including in Yemen, Iraq and Syria. Iran on October 1 conducted a missile strike on Israel, for which Israel has vowed to retaliate. Tehran’s mission to the United Nations said Thursday that Sinwar’s killing would lead to the strengthening of “resistance” in … Read more

Protesters In Ibadan Demand Military Takeover Amid Economic Hardship

A group of protesters in Ibadan has taken to the streets, blocking Nigerian Army vehicles and urging military personnel to intervene in the country’s governance. Video footage that emerged on Thursday shows demonstrators calling for an end to the current administration under President Bola Tinubu. The unrest is fueled by rising discontent over the surging cost of living, particularly following recent hikes in fuel prices. Many Nigerians have expressed frustration over the resultant spike in commodity prices, which they say has made daily survival increasingly challenging. While some protesters claim that even the worst civilian government is preferable to a military dictatorship, many in Ibadan argue that the realities of their daily lives have reversed this sentiment. The protesters are demanding decisive action from military authorities, believing that a military government could provide a solution to the economic turmoil they are facing.
