Ondo Gov Poll: Banks Run Out Of Cash, Customers Blame Political Parties

With just a week to the Ondo State governorship election, residents are feeling the pinch of severe cash shortages in commercial banks across the state. Sunday PUNCH gathered that politicians from the major political parties had been making large withdrawals from banks and stockpiling cash to buy votes. Our correspondent learnt that customers who wanted to withdraw money over the counter were given less than what they requested because of the unavailability of cash in commercial banks across the state. A source in a new generation bank disclosed that the politicians had been withdrawing millions of naira from banks in the last one week. They were alleged to be colluding with bank managers to make the withdrawal easy. The source said, “In the past few weeks, there has been a high flow of cash in the state because politicians, particularly members of the ruling All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party have colluded with bank managers to withdraw huge amounts of money daily. When the politicians ‘settle’ the bankers, they permit them to withdraw as much as they want. I can tell you authoritatively that the politicians are withdrawing millions of naira in cash from the banks, with the assistance of the managers. “That is why we don’t have much cash to give customers. If you go to banks now, little cash is available in all their branches across the state. They are withdrawing money for their logistics in the campaigns and also keeping the money to buy votes on election day.” Some bank customers, who spoke to our correspondent, said they had been finding it difficult to withdraw money across the counter. While blaming politicians, the residents stated that the bankers informed them that they had little cash available in their branches. A customer, who identified himself as Tunde, said he was disappointed to reach one of the commercial banks in Akure on Thursday only to be informed that he could not withdraw more than N10,000 from the counter. He added that the bankers advised him to go out and withdraw from the Point-of-Sale machines outside. “I was surprised that when I got to my bank on Thursday to withdraw N50,000, the man at the counter told me that cash was not available and that they couldn’t give me more than N2,000 cash. I was angry and I asked him the reason; they told me they didn’t get much cash from the CBN (Central Bank of Nigeria),” the customer lamented. Another bank customer told Sunday PUNCH that it had been a problem getting cash from the banks in Ondo State. He said he was given the sum of N10,000 from his bank recently when he wanted to withdraw N30,000. Later, he was asked to go and use PoS for the remaining. “I use one of the new generation banks. I got there to withdraw N30,000 cash to settle some bills but I was told I could only be given N10,000 as the highest I could withdraw from the counter. I asked the reason for this, but the only answer I got was little cash was available in the branch for customers,” he added. A manager of one of the branches of a commercial bank, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the development. He said little cash was left in the banks for customers to withdraw after politicians mopped up huge amounts of money from the banks. The source said, “As a matter of fact, even before now, the amount of money in circulation is very low generally, not only in Ondo State, but there is a way we adequately manage the available money given to us. That is not known to the public. For instance, the CBN in Akure has mandated all the banks in its domain that you cannot withdraw (from the CBN) more than twice within two weeks, unlike before that we will go there Monday, Wednesday, and Friday to withdraw cash. But now, they are dealing with us two times a week. “Then, on the withdrawal by politicians, it is not a lie. It is really happening. It is not limited to only one bank but virtually all the commercial banks in the state. There are some locations that per week, they mop up close to N300m, N200m. You can see that when that one is gone from a branch, there is no way you can serve an ordinary man who wants to withdraw N50,000, N100,000. It is very unfortunate.” Another source alleged that the chieftains of all political parties approached banks for cash, but the ruling APC and the PDP were most responsible for the cash crisis in Ondo banks. “They withdraw huge sums to keep for vote-buying on the election day,” he added. Reacting, the Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr Kennedy Peretei, denied the allegations, saying the main opposition party did not have the money to buy votes. He said the popularity of its candidate and that of the party were enough to win the poll. “The PDP does not need to buy votes to win this election. The antecedents and scorecards of the governorship candidate, Agboola Ajayi, and his deputy can easily see us through the election. Therefore, the allegation is not true as far as the PDP is concerned. However, l cannot speak for the APC which may be relying on vote-buying to cover up their poor performance in government,” he stated. The Director of Media and Publicity of the APC, Mr Steve Otaloro, also denied the allegation, saying it was to tarnish the image of the party and its candidate, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa. Otaloro said, “The claim that the APC chieftains have withdrawn large sums of cash from banks to buy votes in the upcoming governorship election on November 16 is a desperate attempt to tarnish our party’s image. Our party, the APC, is committed to conducting free and fair elections, and we have always adhered to the electoral laws and guidelines. We believe in the … Read more

Desmond Elliot Dismisses Rumors, Says, ‘I’m Not Gay’

Nollywood actor-turned-politician Desmond Elliot has dismissed claims that he’s gay. The controversy began after a blog post accused several Nigerian celebrities, such as actors and reality stars, of being gay. The list, which included the names of several high-profile figures in the country, sparked a strong backlash from netizens. In an with interview with TVC, he dismissed the accusation as unfounded, emphasizing that he had more pressing matters to attend to than engaging with harmful rumors. He said, “Why would I respond to allegations made against me when it did not reduce or increase my life? “Secondly, it is an opinion that is being conceived. And I do not think it is necessary for me to come out and say it’s true or not true; as long as I’m affecting people positively, I’m good. “If you feel you identify as something as long as it is within the law. People do not have to accept it, do you. “So let me say right here, I am straight. You can never have anyone straighter than me. “If some people want to enjoy themselves through publicity, that is left to them but I do not care really. Do you and enjoy yourself but do it within the law and with respect to your neighbours.”

Protesters Storm National Assembly, Demand Kyari’s Sacking

A group, the Nigerian Coalition of Civil Society Organisations, has called for immediate investigations into alleged sabotage against the plan to turn around the petroleum refineries in the country. This is just as the group demanded the immediate removal from office of the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, noting that his management of the oil industry has done more to the local refineries than good. In a protest rally at the National Assembly Complex, Abuja, on Friday, the coalition of Civil Society Organisations said policies formulated by the NNPCL to reposition the oil sector are merely profit-driven but “Obstructs local initiatives designed to support energy self-sufficiency and job creation.” Addressing journalists at the event, the national spokesperson of the group, Segun Adebayo, asked President Bola Tinubu to caution the NNPCL leadership to avoid policies that could lead Nigeria into further economic crises. He said, “Despite Nigeria’s potential to refine fuel locally, vested interests within the NNPCL continue to impose Premium Motor Spirit importation on Nigeria. This unnecessary import dependency costs Nigeria billions in foreign exchange every year, placing our economy under enormous strain. Meanwhile, the people bear the brunt of fluctuating global oil prices and currency devaluation, and this cabal profits from maintaining the status quo. “We must hold accountable those who prioritise personal gain over national prosperity. They are frustrating the nation’s move toward self-sufficiency, ensuring that Nigeria remains exposed to the volatility of the international oil market. This is unacceptable and unsustainable for a nation as richly endowed with natural resources as ours. “Nigerian industrialists, such as Aliko Dangote, have invested heavily in local refineries to curb Nigeria’s reliance on imported fuel. The Dangote Refinery represents a transformative opportunity for energy independence and economic growth. However, instead of supporting these efforts, the cabal at the NNPCL has actively hindered local refinery operations, prioritising imported PMS and discouraging local refining. This calculated sabotage deters investors, limits job creation, and keeps Nigeria locked in economic dependency.” “We know President Tinubu loves Nigeria and wants the best for Nigeria; hence, we urge him to caution the NNPCL leadership, led by Mele Kyari, to avoid policies that could lead Nigeria into further economic crises. The President should immediately authorise an investigation into this cabal’s activities within the fuel sector to uncover and expose any malicious manipulation or corruption.” Also speaking, the national coordinator of the group, Benjamin James, called on the authorities to allow the sale of crude to local refineries in naira. He said, “One critical policy shift we advocate for is mandating that Nigerian crude oil be sold to local refineries in naira rather than in dollars. This change would significantly reduce our foreign exchange losses, empower local businesses, and protect the naira. A shift to selling crude oil domestically in naira would also send a strong message that Nigeria is serious about prioritising its local industries and economic sovereignty. “Such a policy will empower local investors, encourage growth in the refinery sector, create jobs, and reduce fuel prices domestically. It will strengthen Nigeria’s economy and make us more resilient to external economic pressures. The time has come for Nigeria to take ownership of its resources and ensure that our natural wealth benefits the Nigerian people rather than a select few.” The group also called for the sack of the NNPCL’s boss, threatening to take the protest to the 36 states of the federation if their demand was not met. “We are here today at the National Assembly to demand that our representatives stand with the Nigerian people. We call for the immediate removal of Mele Kyari from his position as the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPCL. His leadership has frustrated local refinery initiatives, maintained harmful policies, and upheld a system that harms the nation’s economy. “If the government does not act, NICOCSO here today, pledge to continue this advocacy, rallying every day across the 36 States to make our voices heard. We will not stand down until this administration addresses our demands for transparency, reform, and accountability within the NNPCL. Our economy and the well-being of the Nigerian people depend on decisive action against those who hinder our path toward energy independence,” he added.

Cassava Growers, Community Leader Condemn Gang-up Against Psaltry international ……Say Psaltry Made Cassava A Farm Product To Reckon With Globally

The Psaltry Cassava Growers Association of Oyo State, has condemned an attempt by some individuals to gang up and launch media war against Psaltry International Ltd., the foremost cassava processing company in Africa, based in Ado Awaye, Iseyin local government. While reacting to a publication in an online newspaper (name withheld) on Thursday 7th November, 2024 with the title “Exclusive: Why We Are No Longer Selling Cassava to Psaltry – Oke Ogun Cassava Farmers,” the Chairman, Cassava Out-Growers Association of Oyo State, Alhaji Sulaimon Kehinde described the publication as the handiwork of business rivals, threatened by the global achievements of the company. Sulaimon who spoke with reporters alongside the Baale Alayide of Alayide Village where the company is situated, Alhaji Gazali Alayide, told reporters that the defiant farmers were used by some groups that export cassava and saw the processing company as a threat. He hinted that Psaltry started its operation at Alayide village by providing farm inputs and free lands, incorporated the cassava out-growers into a group to access loans for cultivation which the company collected back for processing and paid back under a memorandum of understanding (M.O.U), which has subsisted till date. “The company is not bothered about the fruitless efforts of some people to tarnish the good image of Psaltry International Company Ltd. through such gutter journalism, whereby they engaged a journalist without respect for the tenets of media to publish a one-sided report. “The good image of Psaltry company across Africa as the foremost cassava processing plant did not just start today, they started by empowering farmers with lands and inputs, while providing avenue for us to access loans for our farming activities with the hindsight that our produce would have a depositing point in their facility for processing, today, some of the farmers reneged on their loan payment agreements with the banks and we the company is currently repaying banks to the tune of over #200million. “Some of these individuals are the ones being used by some new companies that export cassava to foreign countries, not minding the impacts on the Nigerian economy and the people of Nigeria that are already groaning under the present recession. “We call on Nigerians and stakeholders across the world in our efforts to build country less dependent on oil to disregard such stories paid for by individuals that cannot equal the stride of Psaltry across Africa and the world.” Kehinde said his body has a pleasant relationship with the company and those mentioned in the said publication were not members of his association. He claimed that recently, some individuals started entering farms to buy off cassava meant for Psaltry processing plant and taken same outside the country, which he said allowed most of the farmers renege on the agreement made with the banks and the company. Sulaimon said his association remained in support of the company for its efforts so far to build farmers and farming activities in Oke-Ogun and Ibarapa areas of Oyo State “I can tell you that those behind this are competitors who don’t farm but give some people money to go into rural farms and buy for peanuts from. They see some of the farmers as in dire need of money. “It is unfortunate that those sent by these people now go to farmers at Alayide and pack up to 70 and 80 trailers daily from our abode in Alayide which we have recently resisted because it has led to our members selling cheaply to them and defaulting to the banks.” He asserted that despite the attack on Psaltry, it has gone into record as an indigenous company that gave cassava a global reckoning among farm products in Nigeria. The traditional Chief of Alayide village, Alhaji Gazali Alayide said he was surprised to hear that some people could gang up against a company that has done so much for the people of the village, Ado Awaye and Iseyin community, as well as the cassava growers. Gazali noted that apart from providing portable water for as many as eleven communities around the processing facility, Psaltry International connected them to the national grid for free, facilitated the construction of seven kilometers Alayide road and created jobs for their children. “I was taken aback to hear of the said publication, but I remembered that such is human nature, those that create means for others to grow are often colluded against by the modern day ‘Judas.’ “I just want to urge Mrs Yemisi Iranloye, the CEO of Psaltry, not to be deterred by such campaign of calumny by those with intention to bring down the company and humanity.” Alhaji Sulaimon Kehinde, Chairman, Psaltry Cassava Out-Growers Association of Oyo State, Alayide Village, Ado Awaye, Iseyin Local Government, Iseyin.   The Defence Headquarters has confirmed the emergence of a new terrorists’ group known as ‘Lukarawas’ exacerbating insecurity in the North Western part of Nigeria. The Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, made this known while briefing newsmen on the operations of the military on Thursday in Abuja. N80,000 Minimum Wage: OYSHA Applauds Makinde’s Worker-Centric Approach

Adeleke Maria   Following the announcement of N80,000 minimum wage for workers in Oyo State by Governor Seyi Makinde, the State House of Assembly has commended the Governor for his continuous worker friendly policies and approach. A statement issued and signed by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin on Thursday said with this announcement, Oyo State leaps to the second spot, trailing only Lagos and Rivers States, which approved N85,000. He said Oyo State now surpasses other leading states like Delta, Ogun, Ondo, Edo, and others in the amount approved as minimum wage. “It is a good news that Governor Seyi Makinde has once again demonstrated its commitment to the welfare of workers in the state. The approval of N80,000 as the minimum wage for Oyo workers is a laudable decision that underscores the governor’s worker-centric approach to governance. “This development is a significant milestone in His Excellency’s quest to improve the standard of living of our workers and promote industrial harmony in the state. The N80,000 minimum wage is not just a monetary incentive; it’s a statement of our administration’s resolve to recognize the invaluable contributions of our workers to the development of Oyo State. We believe that a motivated workforce is essential to driving economic growth and prosperity in our state.” The Speaker said despite not being among the States with highest allocation from the federation account, Governor Seyi Makinde’s gesture will serve as a model for other States to follow. “This is a significant gesture, especially considering that the state doesn’t receive the highest allocation from the federation account. Makinde’s administration has consistently prioritized workers’ welfare and the state’s economic development. His policies have led to a remarkable growth in Oyo State’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR). In fact, the state has seen a 90% increase in IGR through partnerships with the private sector and development agencies. This growth is a testament to the effectiveness of Makinde’s economic strategies.” The Speaker urged workers in the state to reciprocate this gesture by rededicating themselves to their duties and contributing to the overall development of Oyo State. He also called on the private sector to emulate the state government’s lead and prioritize the welfare of their employees

2027: Hon Segelu Supports Call On Makinde To Contest Presidency

A gubernatorial aspirant under the umbrella of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2027 elections, Hon. Olayinka Oladimeji Segelu has reiterated his support for the call on the Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to vie for the presidential seat in 2027. According to Hon Segelu, Makinde represents a generational shift in Nigerian politics, resonating with the younger population. As one of Nigeria’s prominent PDP leaders, the Germany-based business tycoon, politician and IT professional, has established a nationwide network that could support a presidential bid. He said although Governor Makinde has not declared to partake in the 2027 presidential race, he is widely recognized for his commitment to public service and developmental governance in Southwest Nigeria. He further noted that it would be a significant milestone for the PDP, a party increasingly focused on youth-driven leadership and change, if Makinde decides to pursue higher office like the presidency in 2027. The governorship hopeful applauded the incumbent Oyo helmsman for generously donating a secretariat to the South West PDP. He said Makinde’s leadership in celebrating the contributions of past leaders dedicated to serving the people was laudable. “I would like to commend Governor Makinde on the recent commissioning of the South West PDP Party Secretariat, named in honour of the late Hon. Son of a founding member of the PDP who was the first Executive Chairman of the Party in Oyo State gruesomely murdered by assassins, late Hon. Olusegun Moses Akintola Oladimeji, Hon Olayinka Segelu, noted that “His decision to dedicate this secretariat to Late Hon. Soji Adagunodo, known for his unwavering dedication to the PDP, is highly commendable. Naming this building after such a prominent leader honours Adagunodo’s memory and serves as a reminder of the values of service, loyalty, and commitment to the party’s mission. “The newly commissioned South West PDP Secretariat, with its modern infrastructure and strategic location, is a valuable asset for our party in the South West region. This initiative exemplifies Governor Makinde’s visionary approach to strengthening the PDP’s organizational framework and fostering unity. “By investing in this facility, Governor Makinde has established a dedicated space for collaboration, planning, and capacity-building among PDP leaders and members in the South West. Late Hon. Adagunodo was indeed a bridge-builder whose legacy endured, and this monument stands as a testament to his greatness. The secretariat will undoubtedly enhance grassroots political engagement, unity, and growth within the PDP, a remarkable achievement made possible by Governor Seyi Makinde’s generosity,” he further remarked. Hon. Segelu encouraged all party members to fully utilize the resources available at the new secretariat to pave the way for a stronger future for the PDP.
