FG Loan: How to Apply for Funds to Build or Buy a House

The Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria provides eligible Nigerians with mortgage financing through the National Housing Fund, enabling them to purchase, construct, upgrade or renovate homes. The NHF Mortgage Loan is currently available to contributors at an interest rate of 6 per cent per annum, with repayment of up to 30 years. According to FMBN on its website, the current information shows that eligible contributors can access up to ₦50 million, subject to affordability and the value of the property. Here are the key things applicants should know about the scheme and how to apply. What is the FMBN mortgage loan? The NHF Mortgage Loan is a housing finance facility administered by FMBN through accredited and licensed Primary Mortgage Banks (PMBs). The facility can be used to buy, build, improve or renovate an owner-occupied home. The property being financed serves as security for the loan. Unlike a conventional commercial mortgage, the NHF facility is designed to provide contributors with longer repayment periods and a concessionary interest rate. Who is eligible? Applicants generally have to meet the following conditions: <span;><span;>* Be a Nigerian citizen aged 18 or above. <span;><span;>* Be a contributor to the National Housing Fund. <span;><span;>* Have made continuous NHF contributions for at least six months. <span;><span;>* Have a stable source of income or, for self-employed applicants, provide evidence of regular income. <span;><span;>* Apply through an FMBN-accredited and licensed mortgage loan originator/Primary Mortgage Bank. <span;><span;>* Have a property that meets the relevant legal and planning requirements. FMBN also states that loan repayment affordability is assessed using a maximum of one-third of the applicant’s income. How much can you borrow? FMBN’s current NHF Mortgage Loan page says a contributor can access up to ₦50 million, subject to affordability and other lending conditions. The property also matters. FMBN’s published conditions state that an individual should not receive more than 90 per cent of the cost or value of the property being mortgaged. The older ₦15 million figure still appears in some FMBN documents and online guides, but FMBN’s current product page now states ₦50 million. Applicants should therefore rely on the latest terms provided by FMBN and their accredited mortgage institution. What is the interest rate? The interest rate for NHF contributors is not more than 6 per cent per annum. FMBN currently describes the facility as being provided to accredited PMBs at 4 per cent for onward lending to NHF contributors at 6 per cent. How long do you have to repay? The maximum repayment period is 30 years, subject to factors including the applicant’s age, income and years in service. Repayments are made through the mortgage loan originator through which the applicant obtained the loan. How to apply 1. Confirm your NHF contribution You must first be registered as an NHF contributor and have made the required continuous contributions. FMBN now provides an online personal/individual NHF registration portal for new contributors. 2. Choose an accredited mortgage institution Applicants do not simply walk into FMBN and collect the mortgage loan directly. The application is made through a licensed and FMBN-accredited Primary Mortgage Bank/mortgage loan originator, which processes the application and submits it to FMBN. 3. Obtain the mortgage application form The mortgage institution will provide the relevant application form and guide you on the documentation required for your particular application. 4. Prepare your documents Depending on the nature of the application, applicants may be required to provide documents such as: <span;><span;>* Completed mortgage loan application form; <span;><span;>* Evidence of NHF contribution; <span;><span;>* Proof of income; <span;><span;>* Recent payslips or other income evidence; <span;><span;>* Property title documents; <span;><span;>* Valuation report for the property; <span;><span;>* Bill of quantities where the loan is for construction; <span;><span;>* Relevant tax and employment documents; and <span;><span;>* Other legal documents required by the mortgage institution. The exact documentation can vary depending on whether the applicant is buying, building or renovating a property. 5. Submit the application The application and supporting documents are submitted to the accredited mortgage institution. The institution assesses the applicant’s income, repayment capacity, property and documentation before forwarding the application to FMBN where applicable. 6. Property and legal checks The property is subjected to valuation and legal checks. FMBN’s conditions require the mortgaged property to provide adequate security and comply with relevant planning and legal requirements. 7. Approval and disbursement Once the relevant conditions are satisfied and the loan is approved, the funds are disbursed through the mortgage loan originator for the approved housing purpose. What can the loan be used for? The NHF Mortgage Loan can be used to: <span;><span;>* Buy a residential property; <span;><span;>* Build a home; <span;><span;>* Improve an existing home; or <span;><span;>* Renovate an existing home. FMBN specifically describes its NHF facility as covering these housing purposes. How can Nigerians check their NHF contributions? FMBN provides digital channels through which contributors can access information about their NHF accounts. The Bank’s website also provides online registration and account services for contributors. Important warning for applicants Applicants should be careful of individuals who claim they can “secure” an FMBN loan in exchange for money. FMBN’s official website carries warnings about fraudsters posing as NHF facilitation officers. Applicants should deal only with FMBN and its accredited mortgage institutions and verify any request for payment before proceeding. FMBN’s official website provides information on its mortgage products, NHF services and application channels. Apply Here: https://fmbn.gov.ng/products/nhf_mortgage_loan

NFF Sacks Super Falcons Technical Crew Following World Cup Qualification Failure

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has ordered members of the Super Falcons’ technical crew to vacate their positions with immediate effect. This follows a difficult 2026 campaign in which the team failed to secure an automatic ticket to the FIFA Women’s World Cup. The NFF Executive Committee announced the decision in a brief notice on Monday, without stating a reason for the directive. “The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation has asked members of the technical crew of the @NGSuper_Falcons to step down with immediate effect,” the federation said. PUNCH Online, however, reports that the decision comes after the Super Falcons endured a challenging Women’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign, where they began their Group C campaign with a defeat by Malawi, who were making their debut in the competition. Malawi went on to reach the final, where they lost to Cameroon, who won the WAFCON title for the first time on Sunday. Nigeria’s campaign ended in the quarter-finals after a defeat by Cameroon, denying the Super Falcons an automatic qualification ticket for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The Super Falcons subsequently had another opportunity to secure their place at the World Cup through a playoff against South Africa but also lost that match. The outcome leaves Nigeria facing another route in its bid to reach the World Cup, while the NFF has now ordered the technical crew to step down.

Norway’s King Hospitalised as Crown Prince Assumes Role of Regent

Norway’s King Harald V has been hospitalised following a medical examination, with Crown Prince Haakon assuming the duties of Regent for the next two weeks, according to the Royal House. According to GB News, the 89-year-old monarch was admitted to the National Hospital on Monday after a medical examination, according to a statement from the Royal House. The statement said Harald had been “treated with cortisone for the blood disease hemolytic anemia in recent weeks,” which had led to “fluid accumulation in the body that requires treatment in hospital.” “The King is on sick leave for two weeks “, the Royal House said, adding that “His Royal Highness the Crown Prince is Regent during this period.” The Royal House said it would provide further information on the consequences of the hospitalisation for the royal household’s official programme. It is the second time Harald has been in hospital this month, according to the report. The monarch had visited hospital 10 days earlier for what the Royal House described as a “planned checkup and follow-up with a doctor,” adding that he had been driven there in his own car.

Over 200 KASU Lecturers Resign as ASUU Threatens Indefinite Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Kaduna State University (KASU) chapter, says more than 200 professors and other academic staff have resigned from the institution over poor working conditions and the failure to implement the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement. The union has consequently issued a two-week ultimatum to the university authorities and other relevant stakeholders to commence the full implementation and domestication of the agreement, warning that failure to do so could lead to a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike. Daily Post reported that the ASUU-KASU chairman, Abubakar Abdullahi, disclosed this on Monday at a press conference held at the union’s secretariat at Kaduna State University, Kaduna. Abdullahi said the 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement, which provides for improved conditions of service for academic staff in Nigerian universities, took effect in January 2026, but “its implementation had yet to commence at KASU.” According to him, “The union has written several letters to the university management, Governing Council and the Visitor to the university, the Governor of Kaduna State and urged them to domesticate and implement the agreement in accordance with the law establishing the institution.” He said the union had also engaged stakeholders within and outside the state to intervene in the matter in an effort to maintain peace, stability and industrial harmony at the university. He, however, stated that eight months after the agreement was signed, KASU was yet to commence its implementation, while almost all federal universities and several state universities had either implemented the agreement or announced timelines for its implementation, including the payment of accrued arrears. The ASUU-KASU chairman said the delay had resulted in academic staff at the university becoming among the least-paid university workers in the country, despite KASU’s previous reputation for prioritising staff welfare. He warned that continued delay in implementing the agreement would lead to the accumulation of salary arrears dating back to January 2026. The union also attributed the departure of experienced academic staff, including professors and other lecturers, to poor conditions of service, warning that the loss of such personnel could take years for the university to recover from. Abdullahi said the union’s Congress, at a meeting held on August 12, 2026, resolved to “declare an industrial dispute and embark on a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike,” in line with the resolution of the National Executive Council of ASUU, which met at the University of Abuja on August 8 and 9, 2026. He said the two-week ultimatum was issued in accordance with established procedures governing industrial disputes, giving the university authorities time to take concrete steps towards the full implementation and domestication of the 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement. ASUU-KASU also listed several outstanding local issues affecting its members, “including university autonomy, excessive workload, promotion arrears, death benefits, group life insurance coverage, the 25 and 35 per cent wage awards, and pension remittances.” The union urged the “university management and other relevant authorities to treat the issues with urgency and provide satisfactory responses to avert industrial disharmony” and preserve peace and stability at the institution. It also appealed to parents, stakeholders and well-meaning Nigerians to intervene in the matter to help avert the looming strike.

#OsunDecides2026: Police Explain Tear Gas Incident, Arrest Officer

The Osun State Police Command has arrested an officer deployed to the Registration Area Centre in Modakeke Ward 10, Ife East Local Government Area, after an accidental tear gas discharge caused panic during Saturday’s governorship election. The command’s response followed viral video clips on social media depicting a chaotic scene in Modakeke, where onlookers expressed anger in Yoruba at police officers, alleging unprovoked tear gas firing at a polling site. Reacting via an official statement on X on Saturday, the Command debunked claims that police operatives deliberately targeted voters at a polling unit to disrupt the electoral process. The statement clarified that the incident took place at the Registration Area Centre rather than a voting centre, describing it as an act of personal negligence. “The Command wishes to clarify that the incident did not take place at any polling unit. It occurred at the Registration Area Centre (RAC) and was the result of negligence on the part of an officer who was attempting to ease himself,” the statement read. Strongly condemning the breach, the police confirmed that the officer involved was promptly taken into custody, with formal disciplinary proceedings initiated. “This conduct is highly condemnable and falls far below the standard expected of an officer of the Nigeria Police Force,” the statement continued. “The officer involved has been immediately apprehended. A thorough investigation is ongoing to determine the full circumstances of the incident and to establish whether there were any other motives behind the action.” Reassuring the public on electoral protocols, the police emphasised that security personnel deployed to polling units are strictly prohibited from bearing arms or tactical gear within a designated radius of voting points. The Command also dismissed social media reports claiming the discharge was aimed at scaring away voters. Apologising to affected residents and election observers, the Command reiterated its pledge to maintain a peaceful environment throughout the voting and collation exercises. “The officer concerned will face appropriate disciplinary action in line with the Force’s regulations. “The Nigeria Police Force Osun State Command remains resolute in its duty to protect the integrity of the electoral process and to guarantee the safety and security of all participants,” the statement concluded.

Police Arrest 27-Year-Old Suspect Over Fatal Hotel Stabbing in Adamawa

The Adamawa State Police Command has arrested a 27-year-old man over the alleged killing of a woman at a hotel in Girei Local Government Area of the state. In a statement issued on Saturday, the command’s spokesman, SP Suleiman Nguroje, said the incident occurred at No Vex Hotel, Girei, on Friday. “Following a report of an altercation at No Vex Hotel, Girei LGA, on 14th August 2026, operatives from Girei Divisional Police Headquarters swiftly responded to the scene. “The victim was found with severe injuries and in a pool of blood. She was immediately rushed to a medical facility where she was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty,” the statement said. According to the police, the suspect, identified as Ali Haruna, of Bolori Ward, Maiduguri, Borno State, had been arrested in connection with the incident. “Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect allegedly made statements claiming responsibility for the act. The police are, however, treating this as part of the ongoing investigation and are working to establish the circumstances and motive behind the incident,” the statement added. The command said the knife allegedly used in the commission of the offence was recovered from the suspect and would be treated as an exhibit. The statement added that the Commissioner of Police, Kabir Hassan, had directed the State Criminal Investigation Department to take over the case and ensure a discreet, thorough and professional investigation. The command assured members of the public that anyone found culpable would face the full weight of the law. It further urged the public to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified information and refrain from jungle justice while allowing the police to conclude their investigation. However, when Weekend Punch visited the scene on Saturday, an eyewitness said the suspect lodged at the hotel, which is owned by a retired police officer, on Friday afternoon and allegedly committed the murder by 5pm the same day. The eyewitness further claimed that the suspect confessed that the deceased was the third person he had killed this year.
