10th Assembly Commends Tinubu For Correcting Age-Long Discrimination Of National Honours

The Speaker of the House of Representatives Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Ph.D, has applauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for correcting the mistakes of the past by according the House its constitutional status in offering the Speaker with the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON). President Tinubu had during his Independence Day Anniversary address to Nigerians on Tuesday, October 1, announced the conferment of the Commander of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (CFR) on the Speaker and GCON on the President of the Senate and the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN). On Wednesday, the House, through a motion by Hon. Philip Agbese and 249 others, called on the President to correct past mistakes by giving the House the same status as the Senate in the conferment of the National Honours. The House had decried the discrimination it had suffered over the years not just regarding the National Honours but also in some quarters, where a segment of Nigerians referred to it as the “lower chamber” even when the constitution places both chambers of the National Assembly on the same pedestal. Following the resolution of the House, President Tinubu on Friday night through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, announced the withdrawal of the CFR honour and conferment of the GCON on the Speaker. Mr. Onanuga said, “President Tinubu was persuaded by the House of Representatives position and has decided to remedy the historical error and oversight. Thus, he has decided to upgrade the Speaker to GCON from CFR, by the National Order of Precedence.” Speaker Abbas, in a press statement issued through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Musa Abdullahi Krishi, said President Tinubu has demonstrated good leadership in his actions. “I thank President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for correcting the mistakes by past administrations of not according to the House its constitutional recognition. The President has once again demonstrated his democratic credentials of being a true democrat, an objective, and a listening leader. “With this development, Nigeria and indeed the world, now know that the House of Representatives of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has the same status as its sister chamber, the Senate, and is treated as such. “I thank the President for heeding the voices of reasoning from the House and other well-meaning Nigerians,” the Speaker said. Speaker Abbas equally congratulated the 10th House of Representatives “for this historic achievement.” He thanked his colleagues for rising against the age-long discrimination of the House, which he said has been corrected through their efforts.

Nigerians To Process, Obtain Passports From Home – Tunji-Ojo

Nigerians will soon be able to process and receive their passports from the comfort of their homes, eliminating the need to physically visit passport processing centers, according to the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo. However, this new initiative will initially apply only to Nigerians aged 18 and above and those seeking the renewal of expired passports. Fresh applicants will still be required to appear in person to register their biometrics at passport centers. Dr. Tunji-Ojo announced this development at a stakeholders’ forum in Abuja, where the contactless passport processing App was unveiled. The initiative is part of an effort to streamline passport issuance and reduce the burdens often faced by Nigerians, both at home and abroad. The minister emphasized that the new process is designed to eliminate exploitation by middlemen, who often create unnecessary obstacles to extort applicants. The contactless passport processing project is a collaboration between two Nigerian firms, Irish Smart Technology and New World, which have been test-running the system over the last nine months. The new technology aims to make passport issuance more seamless, with the App covering every requirement for obtaining a Nigerian passport. Tunji-Ojo also revealed that beginning in April next year, passport production will be centralized in Nigeria. As part of this, immigration attachés in foreign missions will no longer be authorized to approve visa issuance, a step aimed at streamlining the process and improving efficiency. In addition, the minister announced that the President has approved the retention of 50% of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) internally generated revenue, enabling the service to enhance its operations and reduce delays in passport processing. To further strengthen national security, the government is also building 32 forward operational bases across the country to support the NIS in its duties. The Comptroller-General of the NIS, Mrs. Kemi Nandap, noted that the contactless passport issuance system will not only reduce the inconvenience associated with physical processing but also enhance the security of the Nigerian passport in line with international standards.

Vaccinate Your Dogs, Cats Against Rabies or Risk 250k Fine, Imprisonment – Oyo Govt Warns Residents

Oyo State government through the ministry of Agriculture has mandated her residents to vaccinate their dogs and cats against rabies to curb the continuous spread of the disease. The state Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Olaleye Olasunkanmi, who made this announcement in a recent statement added that offenders who fail to vaccinate their pets annually, in accordance with the Oyo State Dog Law of 2019 risk a fine of N250,000 or six months’ imprisonment, or both. Olasunkanmi who emphasised the importance of pet vaccinations further urged all dog and cat owners who have not yet vaccinated their pets to do so immediately by visiting the veterinary centres in the state. The commissioner further highlighted that research shows the majority of rabies cases result from dog bites, making it essential to keep dogs confined and to vaccinate them regularly. “The best way to prevent rabies in humans is by vaccinating dogs and cats at least once a year. Human rabies deaths, according to research, are 100 per cent preventable with prompt vaccination of dogs and cats,” he said. The commissioner added that it was a violation of the Oyp State Dog Law of 2019 to allow dogs to roam without their owners. He further noted that over 70 per cent of infectious diseases in humans originate from animals. Consequently, the government has adopted an all-inclusive approach to controlling rabies and other zoonotic diseases. As part of its efforts, the state has conducted free mass vaccinations for cattle under the Sustainable Action for Economic Recovery initiative. The state Chairman of the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association, John Famoyin, commended the government for its initiatives to prevent zoonotic diseases. However, he urged the government at all levels to ensure the effective implementation of the Dog Law to enhance public health and safety.

President Tinubu Unveils Reforms And National Youth Conference In Independence Day Address

By Adeleke Maria  In his address marking Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu emphasized the ongoing positive impacts of his administration’s reforms and outlined new initiatives aimed at empowering the nation’s youth. Acknowledging the economic challenges faced by citizens, including rising living costs and unemployment, Tinubu urged patience as the government implements sustainable solutions. TEXT OF NATIONAL BROADCAST BY PRESIDENT BOLA AHMED TINUBU ON THE 64TH INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA OCTOBER 1, 2024 Fellow Nigerians, as I address you today, I am deeply aware of the struggles many of you face in these challenging times. Our administration knows that many of you struggle with rising living costs and the search for meaningful employment. I want to assure you that your voices are heard. As your President, I assure you that we are committed to finding sustainable solutions to alleviate the suffering of our citizens. Once again, I plead for your patience as the reforms we are implementing show positive signs, and we are beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel. Exactly 64 years ago, our founding fathers chose democracy as a form of government and launched the dream of a great country that would lead the rest of Africa out of poverty, ignorance, and underdevelopment, a beacon of hope to the rest of Africa and the world. Over six decades later, we can look back, and Nigerians worldwide can see how well we have succeeded in realising the lofty dreams of our founding fathers. The world is witnessing and benefiting from the can-do spirit of the Nigerian people, our massive intellectual capacity, and our enterprise and industry in all vocations, from arts to science, technology to infrastructure. The dreams that our founding fathers envisaged are still a work in progress. Every day, we put our hands on the plough, determined to do a better job of it. While it is tempting to focus on what has been left undone and where we have stumbled as a nation, we must never lose sight of how far we have come in forging and holding our country together. Since independence, our nation has survived many crises and upheavals that led to the dissolution and disintegration of many other nations worldwide. Six years after independence, our country descended into a political crisis that led to a bitter and avoidable civil war. Since returning from the brink of that darkest moment, we have learned to embrace our diversity and manage our differences better as we continue to work towards engendering a more perfect union. Despite the many challenges that buffeted our country, we remain a strong, united, and viable sovereign nation. Dear compatriots, our independence anniversary gives us another chance to reflect on how far we have gone in our journey to nation-building and to renew our commitment to building a better nation that will serve present and future generations of Nigerians. While we celebrate the progress we have made as a people in the last sixty-four years, we must also recognise some of our missed opportunities and mistakes of the past. If we are to become one of the greatest nations on earth, as God has destined us to be, our mistakes must not be allowed to follow us into the future. My administration took over the leadership of our country 16 months ago at a critical juncture. The economy faced many headwinds, and our physical security was highly impaired. We found ourselves at a dizzying crossroads, where we must choose between two paths: reform for progress and prosperity or carry on business-as-usual and collapse. We decided to reform our political economy and defence architecture. On the security front, I am happy to announce to you, my compatriots, that our administration is winning the war on terror and banditry. Our target is to eliminate all the threats of Boko Haram, banditry, kidnapping for ransom, and the scourge of all forms of violent extremism. Within one year, our government has eliminated Boko Haram and bandit commanders faster than ever. As of the last count, over 300 Boko Haram and bandit commanders have been eliminated by our gallant troops in the Northeast, Northwest, and some other parts of the country. We have restored peace to hundreds of communities in the North, and thousands of our people have been able to return home. It is an unfinished business, which our security agencies are committed to ending as quickly as possible. As soon as we can restore peace to many communities in the troubled parts of the North, our farmers can return to their farms. We expect to see a leap in food production and a downward spiral in food costs. I promise you, we shall not falter on this. Our government has been responding to the recent natural disasters, particularly the flooding in parts of the country. After Vice President Kashim Shettima visited Maiduguri, I also visited to assure our people that this federal government will always stand with our people in their times of trouble. At the last meeting of the Federal Executive Council, we approved a Disaster Relief Fund to mobilise private and public sector funds to help us respond faster to emergencies. Our government has also ordered integrity tests of all our dams in the country to avert future disasters. The economy is undergoing the necessary reforms and retooling to serve us better and more sustainably. If we do not correct the fiscal misalignments that led to the current economic downturn, our country will face an uncertain future and the peril of unimaginable consequences. Thanks to the reforms, our country attracted foreign direct investments worth more than $30 billion in the last year. Fellow compatriots, our administration is committed to free enterprise, free entry, and free exit in investments while maintaining the sanctity and efficacy of our regulatory processes. This principle guides the divestment transactions in our upstream petroleum sector, where we are committed to changing the fortune positively. As such, the ExxonMobil Seplat … Read more
