FCT Traders To Shut Shops As Tinubu Commissions Abuja Road Friday

Residents and commuters in the Federal Capital Territory are advised to brace up for temporary traffic disruptions on Friday, as the Apo-Wasa Road will be closed from 11am to 4pm ahead of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s visit to inaugurate a major infrastructure project in the city. According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the FCT Minister, Lere Olayinka, traders, mechanics, and shop owners at the Apo Mechanic Village have voluntarily agreed to shut down operations for the day. Olayinka confirmed that the road closure is necessary for the security and smooth flow of the event. According to the Federal Capital Territory Administration, the move is to enable them “give President Tinubu a rousing welcome and participate fully in the commissioning ceremony.” The project slated for commissioning is the newly completed Left-Hand Service Carriageway of the Outer Southern Expressway Stage II, stretching from the Ring Road I Junction to Wasa Junction. The event will take place at 2:30pm on Friday with Tinubu expected to personally perform the inauguration. “The Apo-Wasa Road, which is to be commissioned by President Bola Tinubu tomorrow, will be closed to vehicular movement between 11am and 4pm,” Olayinka said. He added that traffic enforcement personnel would be deployed to critical areas to ease movement and redirect motorists to alternate routes. “Motorists are therefore urged to use other routes between 11am and 4pm tomorrow, when the Apo-Wasa Road will not be accessible. “We appeal to road users that will be affected by this temporary closure to bear with the government while using alternative routes,” the statement read. Call Me Names, I’ll Still Defend Your Right,’ Tinubu Tells Nigerians

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday urged Nigeria’s security agencies not to harass citizens for criticising his government, reaffirming his commitment to protecting democratic rights, particularly the right to free speech. Speaking at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja during his Democracy Day address, the President said criticism—even of perceived unpleasant policies—must be tolerated in a democratic society. He said, “Do not be afraid to hear an unkind word spoken against you. “Some of the best advice a politician gets sometimes comes from his most ferocious opponents, if they think well, though. We do not seek silence because the imposed silence of repressed voices breeds chaos and ill will, not the harmonics of democracy in the long term. “While malicious slander and libel should not go unattended, no one should bear the brunt of injustice for merely writing a bad report about me or calling me names.” Tinubu pledged to continue upholding Nigerians’ right to free speech, saying, “Democracy requires a fair degree of tolerance for harsh words and stinging insults. “Call me any names. I’m not here to make you happy politically and I will still call upon democracy to defend your right to do so.” Tinubu urged lawmakers and political loyalists to value dialogue over dictatorship, persuasion over suppression, and rights over might. He said, “We must always value dialogue over dictatorship, persuasion over suppression and rights over might. Be tolerant and broad-minded in your legislative action regarding speech and civil liberties. “Our nation is not perfect, but it is strong. Our democracy is not invincible, but it is alive. And this means our dream of a prosperous, happy nation is still within reach and worth fighting for.” PUNCH Online reports that Tinubu also dismissed insinuations that his administration is pushing Nigeria toward a one-party state, insisting that the All Progressives Congress remains a political platform open to all Nigerians, including members of opposition parties. However, he admitted that he takes pleasure in seeing opposition parties in disarray and has no plans to help them organise themselves. “For me, I would say try your best to put your house in order. I will not help you do so. It is, indeed, a pleasure to witness you in such disarray,” he said. Punch

(Pictures) June 12 Protest: Security Operatives Barricade N’Assembly Gate

Security operatives on Thursday morning barricaded the main gate of the National Assembly complex in Abuja to prevent protesters from accessing the venue. The protest, organised by the Take It Back Movement and several civil society groups, is part of nationwide demonstrations marking June 12, Nigeria’s Democracy Day. Organisers had said the protest is aimed at spotlighting what they describe as “two years of misrule, hardship, and insecurity” under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. The organisers had moved the protest to the national assembly, where President Bola Tinubu is expected to address a joint session of the National Assembly as part of the Democracy Day celebrations. Speaking on the eve of the protest, the National Coordinator of the Take It Back Movement, Juwon Sanyaolu, said the decision to converge at the National Assembly did not change the focus of the protest. “That we earlier said the protest would hold at Eagle Square doesn’t foreclose the fact that Nigerians cannot organise themselves at the National Assembly to protest the two years of misrule under Tinubu. “The unprecedented hardship and insecurity we have experienced under his government are alarming. So Nigerians will be turning out nationwide to protest against this, and the National Assembly is one of those spaces Nigerians can exercise their constitutional rights. We are encouraging Nigerians to move there in their numbers tomorrow,”he said. Getting to the venue, our correspondent observed a heavy presence of security personnel, including operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and armed police officers, stationed at the National Assembly gate. The entrance was also reinforced with iron barricades as well as a long truck, preventing access to the premises. As at the time of filing this report, the atmosphere remained tense. Punch

2027: Oyo Broadcaster Oriyomi Hamzat’s Posters Flood Ibadan

2027: Oyo Broadcaster Oriyomi Hamzat’s Posters Flood Ibadan

The posters of popular Ibadan-based broadcaster, Hamzat Oriyomi, have flooded the streets of Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State in the build-up to the forthcoming 2027 general election. The posters with the tag, “2027 Oyo n pe o”, had a portrait of the veteran Yoruba broadcaster in black colour, raising awareness for his preparation in the anticipated election without an indication of the office he is contesting for. In a video posted by a support group of the broadcaster cited by our correspondent on Wednesday, the founder of Agidigbo FM was seen jeering to the cheers of the masses at the event he attended, where he was constantly being told that the people of the state are calling him and that he has to answer the call. “Okiki (Hamzat), Oyo is calling you. answer their call.” Also, a statement on the official page of the ‘Oyo n pe o’ social media pages addressed criticisms directed at the broadcaster’s transition from media to politics. It read in parts, “The claim that ‘governance is more than speaking into a microphone’ reflects a misunderstanding of leadership. Broadcasting is rooted in communication, empathy, and connection—traits that are fundamental to good governance.” “Those who reduce Oriyomi Hamzat’s potential to his profession are either misinformed or biased. Leadership is not defined by profession but by vision, courage, and commitment to service. “We call on Dr. Oriyomi Hamzat to respond to this clarion call to serve.” https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMSUAUUKa/ In another trending video, a popular Ibadan-based influencer, Funny Thinker, was seen telling Hamzat that the people of Oyo are calling him to answer their call in 2027. “He said he won’t rest if we don’t, Okiki, the son of Hamzat, we are calling you, please answer us in 2027,” Funny Thinker said. https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMSUA9Vk6/ The veteran broadcaster responded, “You will all be alright.” While Hamzat is yet to speak on whether he wants to contest in the much-anticipated election, he has also not debunked the popular mantra pushed for him in preparation for the 2027 poll. However, efforts by our correspondent to speak with him on the posters making rounds proved abortive as he was not reachable for a comment as of the time of filing this report. Punch

Onitsha Trader Sues NAFDAC, Demands N15m Over Shop Invasion

A female clothing dealer at Ogbo-Ogwu Bridgehead Market in Onitsha, Anambra State, Sophie Okoye, has filed a legal suit against the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control and its Director-General, at the Federal High Court, Awka. Okoye claimed that her store, which deals exclusively in clothing, watches, and fashion accessories, with no connection whatsoever to pharmaceutical trade, nevertheless, was targeted in a sweeping enforcement allegedly executed by a joint task force acting under NAFDAC’s authority. The aggrieved trader filed the suit following the expiration of the statutory period outlined in the pre-action notice served on NAFDAC. According to the court documents obtained by our correspondent, on Friday, the matter is between Sophie Eberechukwu Okoye as plaintiff and NAFDAC and its DG as defendants in the Suit No. FHC/AWK/CS/162/25, filed at the Federal High Court, Awka. In the suit, the aggrieved trader is suing the regulatory agency for unlawfully breaking into her shop and/or carting away her goods valued at over N15 million, saying that her items are not affiliated whatsoever with drugs, food, or chemicals. Among other declarations by the plaintiff include: “That the defendants have no power in the administration, management, and control of food and drugs to oppressively, unlawfully and unconstitutionally break into the shop of the plaintiff looted/carted away the plaintiff’s items that are not affiliated whatsoever with drugs, food or chemicals. “That the defendant’s unlawful seizure and/or carting away of the plaintiff’s goods as listed with their value and quantity, is not only oppressive, unreasonable, but also unlawful, illegal, and unconstitutional. “An order of the honourable court directing the defendants to pay to the plaintiff the sum of N15,746.00 being the monetary value of the items carted away from the plaintiff’s shop by the defendants.” Speaking on the development, the counsel for the plaintiff, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, said the suit was filed following the expiration of the statutory period outlined in the pre-action notice served on NAFDAC. Ejiofor stated that once this mandatory notice period had elapsed, legal action against the regulatory agency would be promptly initiated. He said, “In every just and democratic society, the rule of law is sacrosanct. “No agency, regardless of its mandate, has the right to operate beyond the legal boundaries that define its existence. “The recent developments at Ogbo-Ogwu Bridgehead Market in Onitsha, Anambra State, are a shameful testament to the dangers of institutional overreach and the betrayal of fundamental legal principles. “The now widely circulated footage of Sophie Okoye, a young trader reduced to tears after her shop was unlawfully broken into and looted, has shocked the conscience of the nation. “Her store, which deals exclusively in clothing, watches, and fashion accessories, has no connection whatsoever to the pharmaceutical trade. “Nevertheless, it was targeted in a sweeping operation allegedly executed by a joint task force acting under NAFDAC’s authority.” He, however, called on both the Federal Government and the Government of Anambra State to immediately constitute an independent investigative panel, which must audit the entire operation, identify all those responsible, and ensure they are brought to justice. “While we unequivocally support NAFDAC’s statutory mandate to rid markets of counterfeit and substandard drugs, no mission, however noble, can justify the trampling of innocent citizens’ rights or the destruction of lawful businesses.” Ejiofor stated that justice must never become collateral damage. He vowed that neither he nor his client would be silenced or back down. “Justice must be done and must be seen to be done,” Ejiofor added. Punch

Emir Sanusi Treks To Prayer Ground, Cancels Sallah Durbar

The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, on Friday walked more than one kilometre from his palace to the Eid prayer ground, foregoing the traditional horseback procession associated with the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations. This came after the Emir suspended the 2025 Sallah Durbar on Thursday, citing credible threats to his life. The Emir, dressed in traditional regalia, walked from his palace to the Eid ground at Kofar Mata, where he led the two-rakat Eid prayer. In a special broadcast from the Kofar Kudu Palace on the eve of the celebration, Sanusi announced the suspension, emphasizing the need to prioritise public safety during the festive period. He said, “As a precautionary measure, we have decided to suspend the Sallah Durbar. “We have credible reports that some youths in the Zage and Kofar Wambai areas have been mobilised by unpatriotic politicians to attack us. “Therefore, we urge all district, ward, and village heads to remain in their locations and adhere strictly to this directive to avoid any unforeseen incidents.” He reiterated his commitment to preserving peace in Kano, warning against any politically motivated violence during or after the celebrations. During the last Eid-el-Fitr, Emir Sanusi had participated in the traditional horseback parade, which tragically ended in an attack on his convoy, resulting in one fatality. After leading Friday’s Eid prayer, Sanusi delivered a sermon urging residents to collaborate with security agencies in tackling rising insecurity and the surge in youth thuggery across the state. The Eid prayer was attended by the Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Gwarzo, Secretary to the State Government, Umar Faruq, members of the State Executive Council, traditional rulers, and thousands of Muslim worshippers. On his return to the palace, the 16th Emir was transported by vehicle, flanked by a large crowd of supporters who walked alongside in solidarity. PUNCH Online had reported that the Kano State Police Command reaffirmed its ban on all Durbar-related activities across the state for the 2025 Eid-el-Kabir, warning against any violations. The command restated its restrictions, which include a ban on “horse or animal riding, car racing, reckless or dangerous driving,” and the “unlawful possession or public display of firearms and weapons, or any suspicious or dangerous objects capable of triggering panic.” Punch

Bodija Explosion: BERA Commends Makinde’s Administration As Victims Begin Receiving Relief Funds •••Appeals For Inclusion Of Excluded Households

Bodija Explosion: BERA Commends Makinde’s Administration As Victims Begin Receiving Relief Funds •••Appeals For Inclusion Of Excluded Households

Nearly 18 months after the tragic explosion that rocked Bodija Estate in Ibadan, some victims have begun receiving financial support from the Oyo State Government. The Bodija Estate Residents’ Association (BERA), in collaboration with the Dejo Oyelese Vigilante Group (DOVG) and the wider Bodija community, on Thursday through a press conference publicly acknowledged the commencement of the disbursement of the Bodija Explosion Relief Fund, expressing deep gratitude to Governor Seyi Makinde for fulfilling his promise. While addressing the press at the Bodija Recreation Centre, BERA described the intervention as a “long-awaited but critical step towards healing and rebuilding.” The explosion, which occurred at approximately 7:45 PM on January 16, 2024, at 8A and 8B Aderinola Street, was caused by explosives illegally stored in a private residence. Over 300 homes were destroyed or damaged, and several lives lost, leaving the entire Bodija community in trauma. “This disbursement brings hope to those still bearing the emotional, physical, and economic scars of that fateful day,” said Pastor Muyiwa Bamgbose, President of BERA. He praised Governor Makinde for his “compassionate leadership and unwavering commitment to justice,” noting that the relief fund is a testament to responsive governance. The Oyo State Government, through the Relief Fund Management and Disbursement Committee led by the Deputy Governor, approved a total support package of ₦4.08 billion. This followed extensive assessments by professional bodies which identified 318 buildings within the 500-meter blast radius. The committee also recommended financial compensation to: Families that suffered fatalities (5); Registered tenants (102 beneficiaries); Owners of 37 damaged vehicles. While commending the robust technical and humanitarian response, which included efforts by agencies such as NEMA, OYSEMA, UCH, Nigerian Red Cross, DSS, and NSCDC, BERA emphasized its own contributions. These included emergency mobilization, advanced GIS-based impact mapping, transparent beneficiary registration, and organized community support efforts. The explosion response was also bolstered by technical support from the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA), Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS), and Geoinformation Society of Nigeria (GEOSON), Oyo Chapter. The medical community, especially UCH and local private hospitals, were commended for delivering urgent care, medication, and blood transfusions at the height of the crisis. According to BERA, the community also received ₦35.4 million in donations and relief materials, including Federal Government provisions through NEMA and SEMA, which were officially received and equitably distributed in August 2024. However, the statement noted that 17 affected properties were excluded from the official compensation list due to being outside the 500-meter radius, a technical exclusion that, BERA insists, does not reflect the genuine losses suffered by those households. “We respectfully appeal to His Excellency to extend relief support to these households in the spirit of equity and compassion,” the statement read. The disbursement has officially commenced, with many beneficiaries confirming receipt. However, BERA acknowledged that around 20 cases mostly involving fatalities, inheritance disputes, or account discrepancies, would require additional clarification or legal resolution with input from the Ministry of Justice. While expressing cautious optimism, BERA reiterated that “no amount of money can replace the lives lost,” but emphasized the community’s resilience and commitment to a new chapter. As part of this, BERA announced the Smart Bodija Initiative, a visionary, long-term plan for restoration, security, and sustainable development in the estate. In closing, BERA pledged to continue engaging the government and stakeholders until every legitimate victim is compensated. The association also hinted at future advocacy regarding the prosecution of the perpetrators, noting that the case, initially filed at the Federal High Court, has been recharged at the Oyo State High Court. BERA expressed confidence that Oyo State is committed to pursuing justice, including filing extradition papers for suspects believed to be living abroad. “Bodija will never forget, but Bodija will rise again,” the statement concluded.

Toughest Days Behind Us, Says Tinubu In Eid-el-Kabir Message

President Bola Tinubu, in his Eid-el-Kabir message, has assured Nigerians of better days ahead, saying the “toughest days are behind us.” In a statement released on Thursday, ahead of Friday’s Eid celebration, the president, while felicitating with Muslims, expressed optimism about the future. “We may not yet be where we aspire to be, but I urge all Nigerians not to lose hope. “Let us hold on to our faith and persevere. “Our reforms are gaining traction, with key economic indicators now moving in a positive direction. “Soon, all will feel the benefits.” The president also stated that his administration’s reforms will transform the economy. “The ultimate objective of these reforms is not just to improve statistics but to transform lives and set Nigeria firmly on the path to sustainable development. “There are no quick fixes, but we are committed to repairing the foundations of our economy once and for all,” he said. Tinubu assured that his administration will continue to act in the nation’s best interest, making sure the progress made translates into real improvements for Nigerians. He also highlighted the Renewed Hope Agenda crafted by his government, aimed at bringing prosperity to every Nigerian. “We remain steadfast in our pursuit of it,” he added. The President urged faithfuls to reflect on the festival’s core values of sacrifice, devotion, and compassion. He called on Nigerians to follow the example of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), who demonstrated total obedience to Allah and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad, who stood for love and unity. Tinubu also expressed sympathy for the people of Mokwa, Niger State, where heavy flooding on 28 May caused loss of lives and widespread damage. “In this instance, I recall recent sad developments in our country, particularly the Wednesday, May 28 heavy flooding, which submerged the market town of Mokwa, Niger State, causing deaths and destruction of properties and creating an untold humanitarian crisis. “Let us pray for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives and fortitude for their relations. “Let us join hands with the government to bring succour to the people of Mokwa,” he appealed. Tinubu also hailed Nigeria’s security personnel for their dedication and sacrifice, urging citizens to remember them in their prayers. “Let us pray for our leaders at all levels and our country. “Let us pray for peace in our tumultuous world of troubles and uncertainties,”he said, while encouraging Nigerians to show kindness and generosity, regardless of faith or background. “May the joy and blessings of Eid-ul-Adha multiply in our lives and the life of our great nation,”the statement concluded. Tinubu’s Two Years In Office Disappointing- Ex-IPAC Chair

A former National Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council, John Ameh, has described the two-year performance of President Bola Tinubu in office as disappointing. Ameh, who appeared as a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today program on Thursday evening, faulted the President’s removal of the fuel subsidy, stating that the decision to remove the subsidy was at the root of Nigerians’ suffering. “For me, it has been very disappointing, just to state the obvious fact. Because for the first year, the president was nowhere to be found. He was spending most of his time in France and the UK. “And then when he eventually settled down, he took the second part of that same year to try to settle himself in office by buying luxurious items like the yacht, refurnishing the presidential villa, buying kitchen utensils and vehicles for the National Assembly and for himself, and then buying a private jet for himself. “These are the things he did in the early stage of his presidency. It wasn’t about concerns on how to make sure that life becomes more bearable and more comfortable, and the economy becomes more bearable,” he said Ameh also argued that the President’s decision to remove the fuel subsidy was “unplanned, unscheduled” and “unorganised”, noting the challenges with an increase in the cost of transportation and cost of living. “That’s been my point, that’s always been my point; it was hastily, badly implemented. It wasn’t timely. He didn’t take Nigerian citizens into consideration,” he said. The former IPAC Chair also stated that the ruling All Progressives Congress would be “delusional” to take the defections of politicians to the party as a sign of good performance, adding that the reaction of the people towards the government of President Tinubu was one of pain and disappointment. “It would be delusional for the party to think that they are performing. Nigerians are not moving their mouths. We just celebrated two years of the presidency of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Where are the people rejoicing? There are no people rejoicing. The core rule of whatever parameter you use to check your government is that the people. Vox populi, vox Deo. That means the voice of the people is the voice of God. “And if you have an elitist movement for one party, governors moving, a governor has one vote. The governors who are moving out of their states. They couldn’t deliver for their presidential candidate. They couldn’t deliver for themselves as being vice presidential candidate in Delta. So you can’t use that. “If you look at Akwa Ibom, he has been afraid to move because he knows that he’s going to be in danger. Because the people are not rejoicing in his movement. Because you know that the reaction of the people towards the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu government is one of pain, is one of disappointment. It’s a fact that the president is not getting his policy right,” Ameh stated. Punch
