Sallah Celebration: Makinde Supports Workers With Subsidised Rams, Rice

IBADAN – The Oyo State Government has distributed festive commodity advances to 2,500 civil and public servants across the state in preparation for the 2025 Ileya (Eid-el-Kabir) celebration. The distribution was carried out by the state Chairman of the Agricultural Credit Corporation, Taofeek Akeugbagold, at the corporation’s premises at Total Garden in Ibadan, the state capital, on Saturday. According to Akeugbagold, the commodities included rams, bags of rice, vegetable oil, and other food items. He explained that the initiative forms part of Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration’s efforts to support the welfare of civil and public servants, particularly during festive seasons. Akeugbagold noted that “over 5,000 public workers have benefited from the scheme so far,” adding that the commodities were made available at subsidised rates well below current market prices. “The beneficiaries will repay the cost of the commodities through a structured repayment plan spread over three months, with deductions made directly from their salaries.” The chairman emphasised that the intervention was necessitated by the recent surge in prices of essential commodities, especially during festive periods. Governor Makinde directed the corporation to provide this form of economic relief to workers to ensure they celebrate the festival with ease and joy, despite current economic challenges.” He further reiterated the corporation’s readiness to expand the scheme in future editions to accommodate more workers, as part of the government’s broader agenda to promote inclusive economic support and social stability. Akeugbagold also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to prioritising the well-being of its workforce. One of the beneficiaries, Kunle Adeyemo, expressed gratitude to the government for the timely intervention. This initiative will enable my family to partake in the Ileya celebration in a happy and dignified manner,” he added. Punch

Seyi Makinde: Six Years Of Transformational Leadership In Oyo State |•By Asiwaju Olayinka Segelu

In just six years, Governor Oluwaseyi Abiodun Makinde has redefined governance in Oyo State, etching his name in history as a progressive leader with an uncommon dedication to the public good. Since assuming office in 2019, Makinde has embraced a vision that goes beyond political performance, one rooted in infrastructural expansion, social investment, and systemic reform. His leadership model, built on inclusivity, transparency, and evidence-based planning, has produced measurable growth across critical sectors, education, healthcare, infrastructure, agriculture, the economy, youth empowerment, and security. What follows is a critical look into how Oyo State has changed under his stewardship. Makinde’s administration, with an audacious yet compassionate goal, to rescue the education sector from years of neglect. One of his earliest acts in office was the abolition of fees and levies in all state-owned schools, ensuring that financial constraints would no longer keep children out of classrooms. This singular policy formed the bedrock of a broader reform that has transformed Oyo’s education landscape. The state, under Makinde’s watch, embarked on a comprehensive infrastructure overhaul. Over 600 projects were completed across public primary and secondary schools, including the construction of 26 model schools and more than 130 renovated classroom blocks. Clean water and sanitation were also prioritized, with the installation of over 50 boreholes and perimeter fencing in vulnerable institutions. These developments significantly improved the learning environment for thousands of students. A critical success in this sector was the reduction of the number of out-of-school children from 272,847 to 218,278, a 20% decline. Initiatives like the World Bank-supported Better Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA) program targeted vulnerable children, especially girls, bringing 54,569 back into classrooms. Tertiary education also saw relevant developments. Makinde achieved sole ownership of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) for Oyo State, a feat eluding previous administrations. He also facilitated the transformation of Emmanuel Alayande College of Education into a full-fledged university of education, giving Oyo State three operational universities. His administration reintroduced and expanded bursaries and scholarships, disbursing over ₦550 million, including ₦500,000 grants to each Law School student, marking the first such gesture in over 15 years. In the health sector, Makinde pursued a holistic strategy, improving access, expanding infrastructure, and strengthening workforce capacity. A cornerstone of his healthcare agenda was the renovation and equipping of 351 Primary Health Centres (PHCs), with 264 completed as of March 2025. This decentralized healthcare model brought essential services closer to rural communities and reduced pressure on secondary hospitals. To address the serious shortage of health personnel, his administration recruited over 1,500 medical and health workers, including doctors, nurses, and consultants. The commissioning of Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) oxygen plants at key hospitals like Jericho and State Hospital Oyo reinforced emergency preparedness, especially in critical care. Makinde’s administration also bolstered health insurance uptake, expanded maternal and child health services, and enhanced the capacity of the Oyo State Hospital Management Board, all of which led to improved health indices across the state. Makinde’s infrastructure drive has transformed Oyo’s physical landscape. Within six years, 335.77 kilometers of roads were completed, with an additional 273.31 kilometers under construction. These include economically vital arteries such as the Moniya-Iseyin, Oyo-Iseyin, and Iseyin-Fapote-Ogbomoso roads, which now serve as lifelines for agricultural trade and mobility. In Ibadan, necessary urban roads like the Dugbe–Eleyele, Challenge–Orita, and UI–Sango roads were rehabilitated, while projects like the Secular Road bypass alleviated traffic congestion and opened up new residential and commercial corridors. Transport management also saw enhancements through the Oyo State Road and Transport Management Agency (OYRTMA), whose reforms have streamlined urban mobility and improved road safety. Under Governor Makinde’s leadership, Oyo’s economy grew from ₦2.75 trillion in 2019 to ₦4.05 trillion in 2022, reflecting a robust policy environment and an investor-friendly climate. The state attracted over ₦35 billion in private investments, particularly in agribusiness and manufacturing, positioning itself as a key player in Nigeria’s sub-national economy. The administration supported Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) through business grants, loan facilities, and capacity-building programs, while industrial hubs like the Fasola Agribusiness Industrial Hub were launched to stimulate job creation and value-chain development. Agriculture received renewed attention not merely as a rural activity but as a modern economic driver. Over 3,300 youths were trained in agribusiness under the Youth in Agribusiness (YEAP) initiative, creating a new generation of agropreneurs. Partnerships with international agencies, including the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), improved extension services and boosted productivity. Food security became a tangible objective, as the administration prioritized mechanization, input distribution, and access to markets. Projects like the Akufo Farm Estate and Eruwa Agribusiness Hub stand as evidence of the transformation underway in Oyo’s agricultural sector. He distinguished himself as a friend of workers and pensioners. From prompt payment of salaries to mass recruitment across sectors, his government demonstrated an unwavering commitment to welfare. Over 7,000 teachers were recruited through TESCOM, 5,000 through SUBEB, 3,000 non-teaching staff in schools, and 1,500 health workers joined the civil service. Beyond recruitment, the administration resolved long-standing labor injustices. Staff who were unfairly dismissed in previous regimes were reinstated, some with full promotions. Ad-hoc workers were absorbed into the mainstream civil service, including 791 civil servants and regularized OYSADEP staff. On pensions, the government inherited a ₦56 billion backlog, dating back to 2011. So far, ₦19.5 billion has been paid. Monthly allocations for gratuities doubled from ₦250 million to ₦500 million, offering elderly citizens dignity in retirement. Security in Oyo State underwent a paradigm shift with the expansion and modernization of the Oyo Amotekun Corps. Well-equipped with operational vehicles and additional personnel, the corps now works closely with traditional security agencies. The governor institutionalized regular security council meetings across local governments, strengthening local intelligence networks. A toll-free emergency number, 615, was introduced, enabling residents to report threats and emergencies in real time. These efforts have maintained Oyo State’s reputation as one of the safest in Nigeria. Also, Makinde’s energy strategy aims at independence and sustainability. The commissioning of an 11MW hybrid power plant in December 2024, powered … Read more

Makinde’s Pension Reform: Conferring Dignity On Hoary Heads |•By Balqees Onadiran

It is no news that for decades, pensioners who have toiled for 35 active years in Oyo State were subjected to untold hardship. Many of these people had given 35 years of their lives in service to the state and found themselves abandoned in their twilight years. It was indeed saddening! No one will claim that it is a fabricated story that under previous administrations in this state, pensions were not just meager, they were also irregular. This left senior citizens who had at one time or the other worked for the state as teachers, civil servants and local government workers to struggle to survive. Many of us, who witnessed these events, are still alive to tell the story irrespective of our political affiliations. There was a time when pensioners collapsed while waiting in long queues for their stipends, and the dignity of those who had served with loyalty was trampled upon. However, since the emergence of Governor Seyi Makinde, the story has taken a different turn, as these people’s welfare has been highly prioritised. The truth must be told that caring for pensioners goes beyond a moral duty; it is also a reflection of a society’s values and commitment to justice. These individuals have spent decades building the foundations upon which states and institutions thrive. Therefore, it becomes obligatory to care for their well-being in retirement as a way of honouring their contributions. When pensioners are neglected, it sends a direct message to future generations who are still in service that hard work and dedication are not rewarding and this could be discouraging. As a former U.S. President, Franklin D. Roosevelt, once said that “the test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little,” it is a consensus that prioritising pensioners’ welfare upholds social equity and strengthens public trust in governance to create a system where workers can retire with dignity rather than despair. This, however, was not the case in Oyo State until Governor Makinde came to the rescue. And, in his less than six years in office, his administration has brought relief and restored hope to Oyo State pensioners. Unlike in the past, when pensioners were treated as afterthoughts, third-class citizens (if one is permitted to have another category after second-class citizens), Makinde made their welfare a priority. Since assuming office in 2019, he has ensured that pensions are paid on or before the 25th of every month, a consistency that was unheard of in previous governments. For over a year, he provided a N15,000 wage award to pensioners following the removal of subsidy on petroleum, helping them cope with the economic realities of the time. Kò ṣẹlẹ̀rí o! For those who keep abreast of the latest developments regarding pensioners in Oyo State, they can conclude that there is a revolutionary pension reform. The most recent evidence of this is Makinde’s commitment to pensioners, which came with his announcement of an upward review of pensions in the state. As it is, the least paid pensioners, who previously earned humiliating amounts between N1,500 and N3,000 monthly, will now receive a dignified sum of ₦25,000. This move is to acknowledge their sacrifices and shield them from the harsh realities of inflation caused by the Federal Government. The pension review also accommodated the long-overdue 33 per cent pension increase that was supposed to have been implemented in 2010. It also factored in the 2019 consequential pension adjustment of 20 per cent across the board and a part of the N32,000 pension increase. These measures highlight a significant shift from the past to ensure that retirees can finally enjoy the fruits of their tedious labour. It is safe to say that this is from despair to dignity, as the impact of these reforms cannot be overstated. It is exciting that pensioners who once endured humiliation and neglect now have financial security; they no longer need to cry before receiving their pensions. Many who had struggled in the past can now conveniently afford necessities, live with dignity, and not wish for death due to pangs of hunger. The days when pensioners collapsed in queues, waiting endlessly for their dues, are now a thing of the past. Governor Makinde’s approach is entirely different to that of his predecessor (a former governor), who infamously dismissed pensioners’ grievances by saying, “The living have not been paid; the dead are asking for pensions.” Such insensitivity showed one thing: the neglect pensioners suffered in the past. Today, under Makinde’s administration, pensioners are treated with the utmost respect they deserve. Pensioners, who once feared retirement due to the uncertainty that followed, can now rest assured that the government values their years of service and that they will not be humiliated in any form. With his commitment, Governor Makinde has changed the plight of pensioners and also set a precedent for future administrations in Oyo State. With these reforms, Omituntun is showing to the world that renewal and transformation have truly come alive in Oyo State and that it is leaving no age, social stratum or people behind. If we call this approach a legacy of compassion and commitment, it is not an exaggeration. Apart from pensioners, Makinde uses a style of governance that has set a standard for social welfare in Oyo State. His administration’s focus on prompt salary payments, infrastructure development, and economic growth has positioned the state as a model of good governance in Nigeria and beyond.

While appealing to Nigerians both in the diaspora and at home, Mr Tommy Afolabi alleged Olugbenga Adejuwon of defrauding him N50M forwarded into his account on December 10, 2024 meant for down payment of house in America for one Mrs Otsabomhe. In his narration about the deal, Mr Tommy said, “there is a particular family in Nigeria that I’d always helped in buying things from here in America, and they told me they wanted to buy a house here in America. “They told me they have the sum of N50M which is equivalent to the sum of $30,000 at the current rate then, that I should link them up with anyone that has interest in selling house over here in America, so I can help them secure the property. “I contacted a friend who is a family friend to me and I briefed him about the development, he was the one who introduced one Mr Olugbenga Adejuwon a resident of United Kingdom to me, who told me he has up to $30,000 in his US account, that I should forward the sum of the N50m into his Nigeria bank account, as he promised to pay in dollars from his chase bank account in America. So that the money can meet up with the deadline of the down payment of the house. “Mr Gbenga Adejuwon gave us his bank account details in Nigeria which is Providus Bank and we made a payment into it, OMDG Limited is the name of the business account he sent to us, and I instructed Mrs Otsabomhe to pay the sum of N50M into that business account that Gbenga Adejuwon gave us, that was on December 10, the transactions was divided into four and when they sent him the transaction slips, he acknowledged receiving the payment, and to our amazement immediately the money hitted his account, he quickly moved the N50M the same day to his personal account and then transferred the money in two accounts of the GTB Bank. “Mr Gbenga Adejuwon upon receiving the sum of N50M into his Nigerian business account, quickly moved the 50million the same day into his personal account and then transferred N20million through GTB Bank to a supposedly person, one Mr Samuel Adesanyi and sent another N30million to GTB account of one Nigeria based shipping company in Lagos state. “While waiting for him to send me the $30,000, I called him, that was on December 12th and he claimed to have sent the $30,000 to my account that, the client he worked for has transferred the money to my account and he has the transfer slip already. He said he’s driving a d that he’d forward it to me which i didn’t receive. To my shocking surprise, the bank did not authorized the transfer because it is a fraudulent transaction. That would put me in jail. Up till today, no dollars received and he refused to return the N50M. “The name on the transfer slip is the woman’s name, Mrs Otsabomhe. Gbenga Adejuwon didn’t refund any money to me, nor to Mrs Otsabomhe up till now. The sum of $30,000 has not been paid neitheris is he ready to refund the N50M he kept giving us excuses. “I’ve ended up losing the house that I wanted to buy for Mrs Otsabomhe family and they’ve been on my neck saying I’m the one that introduced Mr Gbenga to them. I didn’t know that Mr Gbenga staged all these to defraud and rob us. It’s very clear to us now that he doesn’t have any dollars in any bank account, he refused to return the N50M. “To my surprise, while we keep digging into the matter, we kept calling his phone, but he doesn’t answer his calls and kept making excuses. “He kept saying he’s expecting some money from cryptocurrency so he can refund the N50 million. I’ve lost sleep because the family who owns the money has been on my neck, and my family has been put in jeopardy. “I didn’t realized that he was a fraudster., Now I confirmed that he do make use of his account he has with Providus Bank in Nigeria to defraud people and then quickly move the money out from his business account. “I’m calling on Nigerians to advise me on how to go about this, I want Mr Gbenga Adejuwon to refund the N50M sent into his account. His wife’s name is Remmy Adejuwon. “And he’s using the fact that he resides in the UK and that nobody can harass him to his advantage over this issue,he has destroyed the relationship, business, and trust that I had with Otsabomhe’s family. Mrs Tinuola Agbabiaka of RCCG Christ Church Gbagada Lagos state married to one pastor Agbabiaka is Mr Gbenga Adejuwon’s sister, she has also pleaded to his brother to refund the money, but he’s been blocking and dropping everyone’s call. I’m begging Nigerians both home and abroad to please come to my rescue as Mr Gbenga Adejuwon is leveraging on the fact that he’s in the UK and nothing can be done to him. “I’m also using this medium to appeal to the member of the parliament of the United Kingdom to help me on this matter as Mr Gbenga Adejuwon is a UK resident and he’s not ready to refund the N50million sent to his account since last year.”

Not Knowing Me Doesn’t Make You Less Christian, Nathaniel Bassey Cautions Against ‘Unholy Obsession’

Gospel artist and pastor, Nathaniel Bassey has cautioned his followers against turning their passion into an “unholy obsession.” In a statement on his X handle on Monday, Bassey emphasised that not recognising him or other young ministers does not make anyone less of a Christian. He also clarified that choosing not to participate in his midnight “Hallelujah Challenge” does not diminish one’s faith. The statement read, “My dear brothers and sisters, you are blessed. Just a note of caution. “Please, let’s be careful and guided so we don’t turn our passion to unholy obsession. “Not knowing Nathaniel Bassey or any of the young vibrant servants of God being used does not make you any less a Christian. In fact, there are so many Christians who have never heard of me nor my music. It doesn’t make them any less Christians. They don’t have to know me. I’m not the best thing after slice bread. “I do not even see myself in that manner. I would be thinking of myself more highly than I ought doing so. “’For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.’ Romans 12:3. “Also, not joining the Hallelujah challenge does not make you less a Christian. People are free to connect with what’s best for them. “I describe it in this way. Apples don’t grow everywhere. It doesn’t mean the places apples don’t grow are bad. It may just not be apples’ environment. “Those of us joining should never look down on those not joining. Those who are not joining should also not look down on those joining. “Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him. Romans 14:3. “Let every man where in He is called abide. 1 Cor 7:24 “Sharing this due to the various tags I’ve been mentioned. And normally would not comment on such. But felt a need to enlighten a few of us. “Having said this, HC is back tonight after a short break, with Day 7. So let’s gather, before our Father, at the altar, to offer, hallelujah, together ! No wahala! Only hallellujah.” Punch
