Oyo Pensioners Hail Makinde For Restating Commitment To Retirees’ Welfare

Oyo Pensioners Hail Makinde For Restating Commitment To Retirees’ Welfare

IBADAN – Pensioners from all geopolitical zones of Oyo State, on Thursday, converged on the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan, in their hundreds to appreciate the state governor for turning around their fortunes through the recent review of pensions in the state. The pensioners, under the aegis of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Oyo State Council, stated that the review has made Oyo State pensioners the highest paid state pensioners in the federation. This was as the NUP, South-West Zonal Council, also lauded Governor Makinde for the review of pensions, which led to the payment of N25,000 as minimum pension to the least paid pensioner, the factoring of 33 per cent pension increase of 2010, the consequential adjustment of 2019, 20 per cent of pension increase and part of N32,000 minimum wage across board for Oyo State pensioners. The South-West NUP, in a letter dated 12th February, 2025 and signed by its chairman Comrade Waidi Oloyede and secretary, Comrade Sunday Akin, expressed its gratitude to the governor. Speaking at the appreciation rally, the Secretary of the NUP, Oyo State Council, Comrade Olusegun Abatan, in a speech entitled “Resurrected Pensioners in Oyo State Appreciate Engr. Seyi Makinde” praised the governor for changing the plight of pensioners. He maintained that the governor started on a great note when he assumed office in 2019 by paying gratuities that were “criminally held down for a whole eight years,” started paying pensions on the 25th of every month and crowned the efforts with the latest review of pensions after all entreaties to previous administrations failed. He said: “16 years before you took over the mantle of government in Oyo State, pensioners had no government that was sympathetic and empathetic to their plights. Gratuities were not paid as and when due, pensions of those times were withheld or paid in instalments and all entreaties to the governments fell on deaf ears, resulting in massive deaths of our members. “At one point, Oyo State pensioners were referred to as dead people and in actual fact, we were dying like fowls afflicted by Newcastle disease. When you contested for the first term, we just wanted anybody that would liberate us from the shackles of death and we went ahead to vote enmasse for you. We did the same thing when you threw your hat into the ring for a second term. “You have not disappointed us. Our pensions became regular; you started paying our gratuities that were criminally held down for a whole eight years because we were alleged not to have voted for them. “During those locust years, extant provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) which stipulated that pensions should be increased were jettisoned outright by past administrations. This culminated in some of our members earning between N350-N1,000 as monthly pensions. All entreaties to those emperors fell on deaf ears. “The only respite we had was a token review of pensions 18 years ago, with increases in pensions from 2007 to 2019 sniggered at by past governors. Our union began its legitimate pressure for the implementation of pension increases when you became governor and you took time consulting widely on how to go about reviewing the stagnant pensions. “We know all bucks stop on your table and because we know you are kind, humane and compassionate to the pensioners, our letter to you struck humanity in you, resulting in your approval that the least paid pensioners in Oyo State should now earn N25,000 per month. “You didn’t stop there, you directed that all pension increases since 2007 be factored into the pensions of affected pensioners, culminating in unprecedented increase of pension of our members. This increase is unprecedented in the annals of pension review in Oyo State and the first of its kind in the whole of the federation.” In his response, Governor Makinde, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Barr. Abdulraheem Bayo Lawal, said that his government would continue to remain committed to the welfare of pensioners and improvement of their standard of living. The governor commended the pensioners and their leadership for showing gratitude to his government, stating that his government knows the importance of prioritising the welfare of pensioners, who had contributed 35 years of their lives to the development of the state during their active service years. He noted that in 2019, the gratuities and pension arrears owed by past administrations were to the tune of about N61 billion, but his government has been able to offset a huge chunk of the debt, declaring that the administration would offset the debt before the expiration of its second tenure in May 2027. He said: “Actually, what happened this morning was quite unprecedented in the sense that, in my experience, pensioners have never come to express appreciation to any government. “So, this is quite unprecedented and it is because of what this administration has done for them in terms of improving the welfare of pensioners in Oyo State. “You would have observed when Comrade Abatan indicated that before now, pensioners were receiving between N350 and N1,000 and that the last time a pension review was undertaken was during the administration of former Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala. Since then, there have not been improvements in their pensions until now. “What we did as an administration was to look at all the circumstances — socio-economic and others and to say, okay, what will be the living pension for our pensioners? So, we fixed what we consider as a living pension which, in fact, was enough averagely for our pensioners. “To that extent, they felt they must come and show appreciation. What they have done this morning was a testament of appreciation, which would also make the government look into other areas where they can have advantage.” In attendance at the appreciation rally were the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Olanike Adeyemo; Head of Service, Mrs Olubunmi Oni, mni; Commissioner for Establishment and Training, Hon. Segun Olayiwola; … Read more

Ibadan’s SLA International Airport: A Symbol Of Makinde’s Commitment To Economic Growth |• By Kazeem Awojoodu

There is no doubt that Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde is doing everything possible to expand the economy of the state, as this can be attested to by numerous infrastructural projects put in place to enhance ease of doing business for interested foreign and indigenous investors. One of the projects that Governor Makinde will be remembered for in the history of Oyo State is the upgrade of Ibadan Airport now known as Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport to international airport. This development is another win for Oyo State under the administration of Engr Seyi Makinde, and it is also historic in the aviation industry of the country. With the Federal government approval, Governor Seyi Makinde’s vision of upgrading the Samuel Ladoke Akintola (SLA) airport Ibadan to an international airport is fast becoming a reality. Governor Makinde in September 2024 performed the ground breaking ceremony of the first phase for the upgrade of the airport to international status. This project comprises extension of the runway from 2,400 metres to 3,000 meters with a width increase from 45 meters to 60 meters. To express his commitments to the project, and also ensure transparency, Governor Makinde appointed a chieftain of All Progressive Congress (APC) in the state who was a former commissioner for Finance during the late Governor Abiola Ajimobi administration, Mr Bimbo Adekanbi as the Chairman of the committee for the SLA Airport Upgrade Project. Just last week, Governor Makinde commenced the second phase of the upgrade with a foundation laying ceremony of the new international terminal building. While the first phase would be completed by September this year, the second phase which is expected to span 18 months is in line with Governor Seyi Makinde’s vision of redefining the aviation landscape for opportunities that would engender growth and connectivity to the world. Speaking shortly after the foundation laying ceremony of the project, Mr. Bimbo Adekanbi gave an overview of the project and its viability, affirming that the effort is another giant leap forward and a crucial component of the airport upgrade plan. Adekanbi noted that the new Terminal Building, which will be constructed by Messrs Craneburg Construction Ltd, represented a major transformation and a testament to the unwavering vision and exceptional leadership of Governor Makinde. He maintained that the project is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2026, that it will ease the flow of passengers, boost the airports cargo handling capacity and position the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport as a top-tier facility in Nigeria. He said, “Today, we embark on a remarkable journey that will redefine the aviation landscape of this region, opening up new horizons of opportunity, growth, connectivity- the commencement of the construction of a new terminal building at the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport. This event represents not only the start of a major transformation but also a testament to the unwavering vision and exceptional leadership of our Governor, His Excellency Engineer Seyi Makinde. “His Excellency has championed the development of the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport, not just as an infrastructural upgrade, but as a gateway to unlocking the immense economic potential of Oyo State and the entire Southwest region. His relentless pursuit of progress, coupled with his profound commitment to enhancing our state’s connectivity, is embodied in this grand project. “Governor Makinde’s foresight and dedication to ensuring a world-class facility for the people of Oyo State stand as an inspiring example of visionary governance. “His tireless work ethic and unwavering focus on sustainable development ensure that this airport will become a symbol of progress, prosperity, and pride for us all. The government had made tremendous progress in the first phase of the upgrade project, explaining that the state-of-the-art Terminal Building that will be delivered in the first quarter of 2026 will accommodate up to one million passengers annually, which is a massive increase from the current capacity of 100,000. “This initiative goes beyond just expanding capacity; it is about creating a modern, efficient, and world-class airport that enhances the overall travel experience while driving economic growth, attracting investments, and empowering the people of Oyo State. With Governor Seyi Makinde at the helm, the vision of a fully integrated, globally competitive airport is becoming a reality. “Oyo State Government remains steadfast in its dedication to improving infrastructure, fostering economic opportunities, and ensuring sustainable development for all. Through projects like this, we are not only investing in physical structures but also in the future prosperity and well-being of our citizens. “With Governor Seyi Makinde leading the way, we are confident that the best is yet to come,” Adekanbi said. While conducting journalists and other stakeholders’ round the project, the Senior Manager, Craneburg Construction, Edmond Maalouf maintained that the project will be delivered on time, while the Site Engineer, Oliver Makhlouf, explained the success so far recorded on the upgrade of the airport runway. Speaking with journalists on the project, the Director of Engineering of the Federal Airport Authority (FAAN), Engr. Adejare Abiola, who represented the chairman of the organisation, lauded Governor Makinde for his efforts towards turning around the fortune of the Ibadan Airport. “We want to appreciate the Executive Governor of the state for what he has been doing. He has been supporting us. He has donated project vehicles for security patrol. Today again, he has fulfilled another promise and we, as FAAN, are ready to support him and the Airport. “I want to also thank the host community who have been good neighbours to us and, at the same time, appeal to them on the excavation that is ongoing around our perimeter fence. By the time the airport is completed, we have to invite the ICAA for certification, and some of the things they are going to look at include the safety and security of the airport. So, please, desist from excavating along our fence,” the FAAN chairman said. When completed, the SLA International Airport will boost economic activities in Oyo State and the entire South West especially in the area of … Read more

How Obasa Offended Lagos GAC Elders

LAGOS – Days after his removal as Lagos Speaker, fresh facts have emerged over what led to the impeachment of Rt Hon. Mudashiru Obasa. City People, gathered that part of Rt Hon. Mudashiru Obasa’s offence was how he repeatedly showed scant regard for the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Lagos APC leaders especially, the leadership of the Governors Advisory Council, which is the highest advisory council in Lagos State. The group set up by Pres. Bola Tinubu years back, is called The Governing Advisory Council (GAC). These are top politicians in APC who determine what happens in Lagos. They comprise of Elders of APC who provide direction for the party and usually step in, to solve difficult issues concerning the party positions. They not only determine how Lagos is run, they get consulted when it comes to major decisions like party positions. They are immensely powerful and influential. And they play an advisory role to the Governor and his Deputy. That is why GAC has been described as the highest decision making body in Lagos as far as governance is concerned. Members are major stakeholers of the party within Lagos State and their main function is to oversee the affairs of the party in the state. That was why the group stepped in during the recent face-off between the Governor and the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa. They are about 25 in number, headed by Elderstatesman, Prince Tajudeen Okusi. 2 members are dead. One is Pa. Akinsanya Sunny Ajose who died a few days ago. There is also late Chief Mrs. Kemi Nelson, the former APC Deputy National Woman Leader who was also a member. Before her death, she was the only female amongst the GAC members. But right now, the body has been expanded to include key players like Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, the wifie of Pres. Bola Tinubu, the Chief of Staff to the President, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, Otunba Harry Ajomale (former Lagos APC Chair), Prince Abiodun Ogunleye (ex-Deputy Gov to Tinubu), Cardinal James Odunmbaku, Otunba Bushira Alebiosu, Omooba Murphy Adetoro, Sen. Anthony Adefuye, Alhaji S.A. Seriki, Asiwaju Olorunfunmi Bashorun (former SSG, Lagos, Prince Rabiu Oluwa (former Island Club President), Alhaji Mutiu Are, Dr. Yomi Finnih, Alhaji Mutiu Are, Alhaji Musiliu Obanikoro, Otunba Muyiwa Sosanya, Alhaji Tunde Balogun, Mr. Wale Edun, Otunba Femi Pedro. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu & his Deputy, Femi Hamzat are also valuable members. The leader of the Council is Prince Tajudeen Olusi (MON, OON). He is 88 and well respected. He is a seasoned politician in Lagos who many politicians don’t joke with. He is an elderstatesman who is full of wisdom. He has produced no fewer than 3 generations of politicians in Lagos State. That is why his name is big in Lagos politics. Just mention Prince Tajudeen Olusi, to many Lagos politicians and you will be told how powerful and influential Papa is, politically, in the scheme of things in Lagos. He is well respected. He has earned his spot. He has paid his dues. He has been involved in Politics since age 13. And he is one of the Elders of the ruling party, APC. He is one man Pres. Tinubu does not joke with. After he received his Certificate of Victory from INEC in Abuja, in 2023 he brought the Certificate back to Lagos to show Pa Olusi who blessed him just before the elections. This time around he wanted Baba to again bless his new role as the President of Nigeria. That is how important Papa Olusi is to him. On account of his remarkable role in Lagos politics, City People, visited Prince Tajudeen Oluyole Olusi at his Lagos home a few years back to drink from his well of wisdom. We were expecting to see one big man who many people will be grovelling around and worshipping him like a god, but we were shocked to meet a humble, easy going man who had no airs around him. He is tall and slim. He is a man who is still very active and highly cerebral even at 88. Despite his age, he does not use a walking stick, neither does he wear glasses. He is quick to stand up to pick things for himself and we found him to be a resipository of information on Lagos history and politics, having been part of the recent history of Lagos. His power of recall is superb. And he still cracks jokes. He has a robust sense of honour. He is a team player and listens to others. For instance, after we were ushered into his presence, we met him casually dressed and we pleaded with him to change into an outfit he can take photos and videos with. He immediately obliged us. He stood up and went in to change, not minding that we were far younger than him. Let’s tell you more. Prince Tajudeen Oluyole Olusi (MON, OON) is a Prince of Lagos, who is passionately committed to the development of the Lagos royal house and the preservation of Lagos’ cultural heritage. His father Alayeluwa Oba Sanusi Matiku Olusi, was once an Oba of Lagos. Prince Olusi was shortlisted for the throne of Lagos in 1964 and 2003. He was, at a time, the Secretary to the Lagos Royal House and the Lagos Aborigene Society. Presently, he is the head of the Akisemoyin ruling house. Prince Olusi was a Councilor under the Action Group (AG), the party led by Chief Obafemi Awolowo, in the Lagos Town Council between 1962 and 1965 and was reelected-in 1965 before the military truncated the democratic regime in 1966. He represented Lagos in the Federal House of Representatives from October 1979 – 1983. He was re-elected in 1983 before the military overthrew the sitting government again. At a time, he served in the Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture. He was Lagos State Honorable Commissioner for Commerce, Industry and Tourism between 1994 and 1996. Yoruba, Igbo, Others Should Divide If Nigeria Isn’t Working – Sunday Igboho

Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has said many Nigerians are no longer proud to identify themselves as citizens of the West African nation. In a video seen online on Thursday, Igboho, who was spotted at an airport in the United Kingdom, said corruption, insecurity, and a bad economy are the reasons for the lack of patriotism in the country. The separatist also stated that various ethnic nationalities should be allowed to go their separate ways if the country cannot function as a unified country. Igboho said Yoruba youths, who have gained valuable knowledge and experience from travelling worldwide, are eager to transform the Yoruba nation into a modern, prosperous society similar to that of Europe. He said, “Even inside the airport, there is no security. They can steal your belongings inside your bag (in Nigerian airports). All these are the things dissuading people from being proud of the country, Nigeria. “Things like that make us sad to identify ourselves as Nigerians. This is why we advocate for separation. If Nigeria is not working as a country, it is better we go our separate ways. “Our (Yoruba) youths will transform Yoruba nation. Most of them have travelled across the world, and they have learned a lot. If they come back to Yoruba land, the knowledge will help them build it and transform the nation like those in Europe.” Punch

Nigerians don’t want a one-party state. They want alternatives. He said, “we commiserate with Oyo State people through the governor and our wonderful leader. “We also want to appeal to the family that lost their loved ones to bear it, having it in mind that it was the will of God that they should go through that channel. “We also want to say that, we in the PDP, we are one. And when one cries, the other one also joins. And Oyo State being a PDP state, we are mourning with the state and we commiserate with the affected families and Oyo State at large. “As the new Secretary, I am bringing unity and cohesion on board. I am going to make sure that from this year onward, the party would function effectively well as the leading opposition party in Nigeria. “And by the grace of God, by 2027, we will take over Nigeria and give Nigerians the good governance they desire. “I know that Nigerians are waiting for us. Hackers Can Now Use Phone Cameras To Steal Cars – Expert

A United States-based Nigerian expert in the automotive manufacturing industry, Sunday Aluko, has raised the alarm that hackers are now stealing cars using just a phone camera. Speaking with our correspondent on Wednesday, Aluko emphasised the urgent need for car manufacturers and owners to adopt robust cybersecurity measures to combat this evolving crime. He noted that with modern vehicles relying heavily on electronic systems, car thieves now exploit vulnerabilities that require no physical tampering. The expert said, “By simply capturing the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) displayed on a car’s windshield, they can duplicate keys with an automated VIN to key tools, bypass security systems, and steal vehicles within seconds “The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a unique 17-character code stamped on every vehicle, providing essential information such as make, model, and manufacturing history. While the VIN is critical for legitimate purposes like recalls and repairs, it has become a tool for criminals in the digital age,” he stated. He added that while the VIN is critical for legitimate purposes like recalls and repairs, it has become a tool for criminals in the digital age. Aluko further explained how snapping a photo of the VIN allows hackers to automate key cutting, clone electronic key fobs and exploit a vehicle’s electronic systems. This method, he said required no broken windows, no tampered wires and no physical struggle. He noted that today’s car thieves operate discreetly, even in crowded spaces, leveraging technology to execute thefts swiftly. He stated, “This is a global threat. All a hacker needs is your VIN to bypass security systems and drive away with your car in seconds. “As vehicle technology advances globally, so do the tactics of cybercriminals. “In 2023, reports from cybersecurity agencies in Europe and North America revealed a sharp rise in VIN-based car thefts. Countries like Germany and Japan are already addressing these vulnerabilities through stricter regulations and enhanced cybersecurity protocols. However, the global automotive industry faces a significant challenge in staying ahead of these threats.” To mitigate the risk of VIN-based car theft, Aluko highlighted the importance of concealing the VIN displayed on dashboards, particularly in public spaces. He also recommended additional security measures such as steering wheel locks, storing wireless key fobs in protective pouches and ensuring vehicle software is regularly updated to patch vulnerabilities. He emphasised the need for automakers to enhance encryption protocols and implement robust cybersecurity frameworks in vehicle design. He also called on policymakers to introduce regulations that mandate stronger security features in cars. “All it takes is a photo of your license plate or VIN for a hacker to compromise your car’s security. “Automakers and owners must work together to safeguard vehicles. Awareness and proactive measures are key,” Aluko warned. Aluko urged stakeholders to prioritise cybersecurity, saying, “The rise in VIN-based car theft highlights the urgency for global action. It’s not just about protecting assets; it’s about securing the future of transportation.” He also urged car owners to be vigilant “While technology has made our lives easier, it has also introduced new risks. Protecting your vehicle begins with awareness and taking simple preventive steps,” he urged. Punch
