Seven Eritrean Players Abscond in South Africa after AFCON Qualifier

Seven players from the Eritrea national football team have failed to return home after their side secured a historic victory over Eswatini national football team. A source close to the squad told the BCC on Monday that while part of the team travelled back via South Africa after the match, the seven players are believed to have absconded. The development comes shortly after Eritrea’s 2–1 win in Eswatini, which secured a 4–1 aggregate victory and a return to the qualifying group stages of the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in 19 years. Sources said only 10 members of the 24-man squad were based in Eritrea, and just three of those players—including team captain Ablelom Teklezghi—have returned to the country. Although the whereabouts of the missing players remain unclear, reports indicate that some may have been seen in South Africa. Among those who failed to return are goalkeeper Kubrom Solomon and veteran winger Medhanie Redie. The incident has cast a shadow over what had been a celebrated achievement for the team, with Eritrea’s state-owned media remaining largely silent on their return. Sources said plans for a reception to welcome the victorious squad were cancelled following news of the players’ disappearance. Images shared by officials showed some players and staff being received by embassy representatives and members of the Eritrean community in Cairo, Egypt, during a stopover. However, only those who later travelled on to Asmara were present. The situation reflects a broader pattern involving Eritrean athletes, with several previous cases of players failing to return home after international competitions. In 2019, seven players from the Eritrean under-20 team went missing after a regional tournament in Uganda. In 2015, 10 senior players refused to return following a World Cup qualifier in Botswana. Earlier incidents include 15 players and a team doctor granted asylum in Uganda in 2013, and in 2009, nearly the entire senior team failed to return from a trip to Kenya.

Fresh Attacks: Enough of ‘hollow rhetoric,’ Atiku Tells Tinubu

Former presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has criticised President Bola Tinubu over the recent wave of attacks in parts of the country, urging the Federal Government to take more decisive steps to address insecurity. In a post via his official X handle on Monday, Atiku expressed concern that recent violent incidents appear to contradict assurances earlier given by the President following the Angwan Rukuba attack. “I wish to remind President Bola Tinubu to keep to his words that ‘this (Angwan Rukuba attack) will not repeat itself,’” he said. He added, “It does appear that those words are hollow because barely 72 hours later, another attack in Benue State claimed over a dozen lives. The Commander-in-Chief should brace up to the challenges of governance.” The former presidential candidate also raised alarm over developments in a community in Nasarawa State, where residents reportedly fled their homes amid fears of further attacks. “I am also concerned, like all well-meaning Nigerians, about what is going on in a Nasarawa community where families had fled on foot amid threats of attack,” he said. Atiku further cited a separate incident in Kaduna State, describing it as part of a troubling pattern of insecurity. “And as if those are not enough, there was a fresh attack in Kaduna State at the weekend,” he added. He emphasised that the foremost duty of the government is to ensure the safety and welfare of its citizens. “The primary responsibility of government is the protection of lives and property and the promotion of the welfare of citizens,” he stated. Calling for urgent action, Atiku urged the President to move beyond rhetoric. “Enough of this hollow rhetoric, Mr President. It is time to fold your sleeves and get to work,” he said. He also extended condolences to the victims of the attacks. “Meanwhile, my thoughts and prayers are with the families who may have lost a dear one in these attacks,” he added.

UCL: Arsenal’s Rice, Gabriel Return to Training, Saka Absent

Arsenal FC have received a timely boost ahead of their Champions League quarter-final clash, with Declan Rice and Gabriel Magalhães both returning to training, although Bukayo Saka remains absent. As reported by BBC sport on Monday, Rice was back with the squad after withdrawing from international duty with England during the March break following a medical assessment. His return will come as a major relief to manager Mikel Arteta, especially with the team looking to steady themselves after consecutive cup defeats. Defender Gabriel also took part in the session at Arsenal’s London Colney training base, having been forced off with a knee issue during the FA Cup quarter-final loss to Southampton. His involvement suggests the injury may not be as serious as initially feared. There was further positive news as Leandro Trossard rejoined full training, giving Arteta additional options in attack ahead of the trip to face Sporting CP in Lisbon. However, Saka was not involved in Monday’s session after also leaving the England camp early, casting doubt over his availability for the first leg. Arsenal head into the European tie aiming to avoid a third straight defeat, following their FA Cup exit and Carabao Cup final loss to Manchester City. Despite those setbacks, the Gunners remain in a strong position domestically, sitting top of the Premier League table as they chase a first league title since the 2003–04 season. They will return to league action against AFC Bournemouth after their Champions League encounter. Arteta, along with goalkeeper David Raya, is expected to address the media in Portugal ahead of the crucial fixture.

RESTANCHOR Foundation Founder, Leye Adefioye Lauds Oyo First Lady’s Intervention In Child Welfare

THE founder of RESTANCHOR Total Child Parenting Foundation, Pastor Prince Leye Adefioye, has commended the Wife of the Oyo State Governor, Tamunominini Olufunke Makinde, for her commitment to the welfare of orphans and vulnerable children across the state. Adefioye gave the commendation on Tuesday during the First Lady’s Easter visit to the foundation’s office in Ibadan, where over 3,000 orphans and vulnerable children were hosted in a celebratory outreach. In his welcome address, the cleric described the visit as “historic,” noting that Makinde is the first First Lady to physically visit the foundation’s children at its office since its establishment in 2006. “This act of compassion, humility, and identification with the vulnerable will remain indelible in our hearts and in the annals of this foundation,” he said. He praised the First Lady’s consistent advocacy for children’s welfare, adding that her intervention reflects a broader commitment by the administration of Seyi Makinde to child development and social protection. Adefioye recalled that in 2022, under the platform of the National Council of Child Rights Advocates of Nigeria, Governor Makinde was nominated as the best governor in children’s welfare in the South-West, a recognition he said was backed by documented advocacy and evidence. Highlighting the impact of the foundation, Adefioye said RESTANCHOR has, over the years, supported more than 5,000 children and over 3,000 families through education, healthcare, food assistance, mentorship, and empowerment initiatives. He, however, noted that many children still face severe economic hardship, describing them as “victims of circumstances beyond their control,” and called for sustained intervention from government and stakeholders. Meanwhile, the founder also made two key appeals to the First Lady, urging her to facilitate the formal recognition of a United Nations-related award linked to the governor’s contributions to child welfare, and to accept an invitation to serve as the Matron of the foundation at its 20th anniversary scheduled for October 22, 2026. Speaking during the outreach, the First Lady, represented by the wife of the Deputy Governor, Chief (Mrs) Ajibike Lawal, said the Easter initiative was designed to demonstrate love and solidarity with vulnerable children amid prevailing economic challenges. She explained that the programme involved visits to 12 homes across the 33 local government areas of the state, with the distribution of food items and cash support to beneficiaries. “We are celebrating with these children to show them that they are loved and remembered by the Oyo State Government, despite the challenges around us,” she said. “Easter is a season of love and sacrifice, and we want them to feel that love.” Lawal also called on individuals, corporate organisations, and philanthropists to support vulnerable groups, stressing that acts of kindness contribute to building a more inclusive society.

Some market men and women expressed optimism about the immediate impact of the development. “Now we can stay longer to sell. Before, once it got dark, we had to close early,” a trader said. Ogun Shuts School Over Suspected Gas Leak

The Ogun State Government has ordered the closure of Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School in Ijebu Ode and launched an investigation following a suspected gas leak that hospitalised about 30 students. The incident occurred shortly after the school assembly on Wednesday, causing panic as a gaseous substance spread across the premises. PUNCH Metro gathered that more than 30 persons, including students and staff members, reportedly struggled to breathe. However, in a statement issued on Thursday, the Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, said Governor Dapo Abiodun had directed security agencies to determine the cause of the incident, noting that the outcome of the investigation would help prevent a recurrence. The governor also ordered the immediate closure of the affected school. “Governor Abiodun has also directed the immediate opening of a Situation Room at the General Hospital, Ijebu-Ode, which will offer free treatment to other students and residents of the impacted areas such as Makalewo, Ogbogbo, Molipa, Igbegba, Ikoto and Oke-Aje market,” the statement added. Residents of areas including Makalewo, Ogbogbo, Molipa, Igbegba, Ikoto and Oke-Aje were advised not to panic, as the government said there was no confirmed security threat linked to the incident. Oresanya said officials of the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency had deployed gas analysers to determine the source and nature of the substance. The statement noted that Oresanya, alongside other government officials, visited the school and the hospital where the victims were receiving treatment. The commissioner added that most of the affected students and teachers were in stable condition. PUNCH Metro gathered that while some insiders initially speculated that the incident may have been caused by a nearby gas explosion, others suggested it originated from a chemical odour in the school laboratory during a practical session. The school’s Vice Principal (Junior School), Adeola Borogun, dismissed reports of an explosion, describing the incident as the presence of a strange chemical smell within the premises.
