Police Call on NLC and TUC to Reschedule Planned Tuesday Protest in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has advised the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress to reschedule their planned protest billed for Tuesday, February 3, 2026, citing security concerns. On Sunday, the unions announced plans to hold a peaceful solidarity rally in Abuja on Tuesday, February 3. In a joint statement by the NLC spokesperson, Benson Upah, and the TUC Secretary General, N. A. Toro, the two labour unions said the peaceful rally will be staged at the Federal Capital Development Authority as a public demonstration of solidarity with affected workers. The NLC and TUC directed all affiliates and state councils in the Federal Capital Territory to ensure effective mobilisation and timely dissemination of the information to their members, adding that full participation in the lawful and peaceful action was expected. However, in a statement on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the Command said it was aware of the proposed peaceful protest and acknowledged the constitutional right of citizens to peaceful assembly. However, Adeh disclosed that intelligence reports available to the Command indicated plans by the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria and other non-state actors to infiltrate and hijack the protest for purposes that could threaten public peace and security. The statement partly read, “The FCT Police Command is aware of a planned peaceful protest by the NLC FCT Council, scheduled to hold tomorrow, Tuesday, 3rd February 2026, within the Federal Capital Territory. “While the Command recognises and respects the constitutional rights of citizens to peaceful assembly and protest, and remains committed to providing adequate security for all lawful activities, intelligence reports at the disposal of the Police indicate plans by the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria and other non-state actors to infiltrate and hijack the protest for purposes inimical to public peace and security.” Adeh added that the measure was also aimed at ensuring the safety of residents, protecting freedom of movement, and allowing the unhindered conduct of lawful daily activities within the Federal Capital Territory. She said, “In view of the above, and in the overriding interest of public safety, the FCT Police Command respectfully appeals to the organisers of the planned protest to consider rescheduling the activity to a later date and time. This measure is aimed at forestalling any breakdown of law and order, while also ensuring that the rights of other residents to safety, freedom of movement, and the conduct of lawful daily activities are not infringed upon. ” The PUNCH reports that the workers of the FCT administration commenced an indefinite strike on January 19 over unpaid salaries, promotion arrears and poor working conditions. In response, the FCT authorities approached the National Industrial Court, describing the industrial action as illegal and seeking an order to restrain the unions and their members from continuing the strike. The court, however, ordered the workers to resume work. The NLC and TUC subsequently accused the FCT authorities of intimidation and vowed to resist it.

Police Caution Intending Travellers Against Visa Scams

The Police Special Fraud Unit has cautioned intending travellers to strictly adhere to due process when applying for travel visas. Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday, the spokesperson of PSFU, DSP Ovie Ewhubare, cautioned intending travellers against scams. Ewhubare urged members of the public to remain vigilant against fraudsters’ activities. NAN reports that scammers in the country have increasingly targeted visa applicants by posing as embassy officials or agents, using fake websites and urgent messages to demand quick payments. The fraudsters often promise guaranteed visa approvals or faster processing and request payments through personal bank accounts, gift cards, or other unofficial channels. Recently, the Police Command in Lagos State apprehended a syndicate in the Ago-Okota area of the state, for allegedly defrauding members of the public of over N500 million. The suspects, aged 23, 25, 27 and 36, were apprehended following credible intelligence and multiple complaints from victims. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects operated under the guise of an educational consultancy. The spokesperson said that following due process remained the most effective way to avoid becoming a victim of fraud. NAN

Police Arraign 11 Suspects Over the Murder of Arise TV Journalist, Security Guard

Eleven suspects linked to the murder of Arise News journalist, Somtochukwu Maduagwu, and a security guard, Barnabas Danlami, were on Wednesday arraigned before a Federal Capital Territory court. The Federal Capital Territory Police Command confirmed the arraignment in a statement released on Wednesday, stating that the suspects were charged with criminal conspiracy, armed robbery, and murder. Maduagwu, an anchor, reporter, and producer with Arise News, was killed alongside Danlami during a robbery attack at Unique Apartments, Katampe Extension, Mabushi, Abuja, on September 29, 2025. The suspects arraigned include Shamsu Hassan, Sani Sirajo, Hassan Isah, Abubakar Alkamu, Abdulsalam Saleh, Suleiman Badamasi, Zaharadeen Mohammed, Musa Umar (aka “Small”), Mashkur Jamil, Suleiman Sani, and Abubakar Usman. The command said in a statement, “The suspects were arraigned on a nine-count charge, including criminal conspiracy, armed robbery, and murder.” The 29-year-old journalist died in the early hours of September 29, 2025, when armed robbers stormed the three-storey apartment complex around 3:30 am, moving from flat to flat and dispossessing residents of their belongings. The FCT Commissioner of Police, Ajao Adewale, speaking at the time, said, “Policemen moved to the scene and found her lying unconscious. She was immediately taken to Maitama General Hospital, where doctors tried to resuscitate her using CPR, but sadly, she could not make it.” Adewale had condemned the killing as “cruel and senseless,” stressing that such violence “has no place in a sane society.” The Command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, had earlier revealed that preliminary investigations showed the syndicate procured its firearms from an arms dealer operating across the Nigeria–Niger border. Items recovered from the suspects include a fabricated AK-47 rifle, 36 rounds of live ammunition, a locally made pistol, a pump-action gun, two cartridges, four mobile phones belonging to the victims, knives, a cutlass, and nine torchlights. The suspects also confessed to participating in other armed robbery operations at Katampe 1, a hotel in Apo, and another in Zuba, all within the FCT. Arise Television management had described Maduagwu as “delectable, intelligent, and bold,” noting that she joined the station in September 2024 after representing Nigeria at the Miss Tourism World pageant in Quanzhou, China, in 2023. The management noted that through her legal background and reporting skills, she advocated for out-of-school children and campaigned against sexual and gender-based violence. The matter has been adjourned to February 2026 for further proceedings. The command urged “members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons or packages through the Command’s emergency lines: 08032003913, 08028940883, or CRU FCT: 08107314192.”

Facts are Stubborn’, Odinkalu Questions Police Denial of Kaduna Church Abductions

A former chairman of the National Human Rights Commission and Human rights lawyer, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, has criticised the Kaduna State Police Command over its denial of the reported abduction of worshippers from churches in Kajuru Local Government Area of the state. Odinkalu questioned the motive behind what he described as an attempt by the police to suppress facts surrounding the incident. Odinkalu reacted on Tuesday via his verified X account after the police dismissed reports that dozens of worshippers were kidnapped during Sunday services in parts of Kaduna State. He reacted on Tuesday via his verified X (formerly Twitter) account after the police dismissed reports that dozens of worshippers were kidnapped during Sunday church services in parts of Kaduna State, describing the claims as false and capable of causing panic. Sharing video clips purportedly from the affected churches, Odinkalu wrote, “The #policeNG alone know whose & what script they are acting out in claiming to deny the #MassAbduction last Sunday of the #Kajuru177. “Kaduna State CP, Muhammad Rabiu, has been to the community with his folks. He has seen the affected places of worship & personally spoken to survivors.” Odinkalu alleged that the Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Rabiu, may be under pressure to downplay the incident. The videos showed overturned chairs and disrupted church interiors, which he said were evidence from places of worship visited by security officials. According to him, survivors were spoken to during the visit to the affected communities. “I suspect the CP may fear that if he says truthfully what he saw, his paymasters.. will come for his job. But #FactsAreStubborn.” The controversy follows earlier claims by the Christian Association of Nigeria in Northern Nigeria that armed men stormed churches in Kajuru on Sunday and abducted worshippers. Rev. Joseph Hayab, chairman of CAN in the North, alleged that the attackers “came in numbers and blocked the entrance of the churches and forced the worshippers out into the bush.” However, the Kaduna State Police Command, in a joint statement with local government authorities on Monday, dismissed the claims as “mere falsehood being peddled by conflict entrepreneurs who want to cause chaos.” The chairman of Kajuru Local Government Area, Dauda Madaki, said security operatives were deployed to Kurmin Wali following the reports but found no evidence of an attack. “I asked the village head, Mai Dan Zaria, and he said that there was no such attack,” Madaki said. Police also quoted the state commissioner for internal security and home affairs as saying that religious leaders who visited the area confirmed that the information circulating was false. However, the Nigeria Police Force on Tuesday night confirmed that an abduction incident did occur at Kurmin Wali, a remote community in Kajuru LGA, following initial uncertainty surrounding the reports. In a statement issued on Tuesday night, the Force spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, said the police received reports of the abduction, which generated widespread concern among residents and the general public. According to him, the development prompted the Kaduna State Governor to convene a meeting of the State Security Council at the Government House, Kaduna. Hundeyin explained that confusion arose during the meeting when some individuals from the affected local government area disputed the report earlier confirmed by the police, describing it as false. He said the conflicting accounts necessitated caution and further verification before making definitive public statements, adding that comments made by the Kaduna Commissioner of Police were intended to prevent unnecessary panic and not to deny the incident.

JUST IN: Police Declare Sowore Wanted Over Planned Protest in Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command has declared activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, wanted for allegedly plotting to instigate public unrest and obstruct major roads in the state. The state Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, made this known on Monday while briefing journalists at the Iyana-Oworo section of the Third Mainland Bridge. Jimoh said that Sowore, who leads the “Take It Back Movement,” ignored earlier warnings from the police not to mobilise protests over the recent demolition of houses in the Oworonshoki area. “We are closing in on Sowore and others involved in coordinating activities intended to disrupt public peace. “Sowore should surrender at the nearest police station or face arrest wherever he is found,” he said. He cautioned that anyone attempting to cause disturbances or block public roads would “face the full weight of the law.” According to the commissioner, intelligence reports indicated that Sowore and his associates were planning simultaneous demonstrations at strategic locations such as the Third Mainland Bridge, Lekki Tollgate, and Freedom Park. Describing the alleged plan as “criminal,” Jimoh warned that it could cause severe traffic disruptions and endanger lives. “It is only someone who needs examination that would attempt to block such a vital route used by thousands daily,” he added. The police chief revealed that 13 suspects connected to the planned protest had already been arrested, while Sowore allegedly fled. He said investigations were ongoing to uncover the sponsors and collaborators behind the plan. Jimoh disclosed that police officers had been deployed across major highways and bridges, where temporary roadblocks and diversions had been mounted. “The Third Mainland Bridge was not designed to hold stationary weight. Any gathering on it could pose structural risks,” he stated. Addressing concerns over the recent demolitions in parts of Lagos, particularly Oworonshoki, Jimoh maintained that affected residents had been compensated. “The government compensated those affected, and the media witnessed it. There is no justification to provoke a crisis under the guise of protest,” he said. He urged residents to go about their normal activities without fear, assuring that the police and other security agencies were on top of the situation. “We are not sleeping. We will apprehend, investigate, and prosecute anyone attempting to undermine public safety in Lagos,” Jimoh declared. The commissioner reaffirmed the command’s commitment to enforcing the law without fear or favour, emphasising that “freedom of expression must not turn into public nuisance or risk lives.” Sowore had threatened to stage a protest against the demolition of houses in Oworoshoki following the controversy surrounding the demolitions. Sowore made this known shortly after he was granted bail in Abuja alongside Nnamdi Kanu’s Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor; Kanu’s younger brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu; and other protesters. But the commissioner cautioned Sowore against mobilising protests over the demolitions. He said that the command had made massive deployments across the city to forestall any planned demonstrations that could lead to public disorder. Jimoh emphasised that the command would not tolerate any attempt to block major highways or disrupt the peace currently being enjoyed in Lagos.

BREAKING: Police Arrest Sowore in Court

Activist and publisher, Mr Omoyele Sowore, was on Thursday arrested within the premises of the Federal High Court in Abuja by armed policemen, shortly after he appeared in solidarity with the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu. Sowore, who has been at the forefront of calls for Kanu’s release from detention, was picked up by security operatives who insisted that he must come with them to the Federal Capital Territory Police Command. When asked what his offence was, one of the officers explained that they were acting on the instruction of the Commissioner of Police. “The Commissioner of Police said we should bring you to the office,” the officer said. Although Sowore queried the absence of a formal letter of invitation, he maintained that his lawyer must accompany him before he was eventually taken away in a police van. Confirming Sowore’s arrest in a post via his X handle, human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, described the move as “preposterous” He wrote, “The arrest of Omoyele Sowore at the Federal High Court in Abuja moments ago is preposterous. “The police and the Tinubu regime are making a mockery of our judicial system. He should be freed immediately. Stop the shenanigans.” Sowore had on Monday, October 20, led a protest in Abuja — part of the #FreeNnamdiKanu demonstrations that spread to other parts of the country. During the protest, Kanu’s lawyer Aloy Ejimakor, his brother, Emmanuel Kanu, and ten others were arrested and subsequently remanded at Kuje Prison. In the First Information Report filed before a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Kuje, the police alleged that the defendants, during the #FreeNnamdiKanu protest — which it said was held in defiance of a court order — chanted war songs and disrupted the free flow of traffic. The police further alleged that they engaged in criminal conspiracy, incited disturbance, and caused a breach of public peace — offences said to be punishable under Sections 152, 114 and 113 of the Penal Code Law. “That on the 20th day of October 2025, you (1) Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, (2) Prince Emmanuel Kanu, (3) Joshua Emmanuel, (4) Bishop Wilson Anyalewechi, (5) Barrister Okere Kingdom Nnamdi, (6) Clinton Chimeneze, (7) Gabriel Joshua, (8) Isiaka Husseini, (9) Onyekachi Ferdinand, (10) Amadi Prince, (11) Edison Ojisom, and (12) Godwill Obiama, all male adults of the FCT, Abuja, were arrested by a team of security agents at various locations within the FCT for engaging in incitement, disturbance and breach of public peace in disobedience to a court order, thereby disrupting the free movement of citizens while chanting war songs and demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu, who is undergoing lawful trial at the Federal High Court, in a manner that threatens national security. “You thereby committed the aforementioned offences.” The court has fixed Friday for the defendants to take their plea on the charge. More to come…

The commissioner urged residents to support the investigation by providing timely and useful information to the police and to raise prompt alarm in suspicious situations to forestall similar crimes. This is not the first time media professionals have been killed in robbery-related incidents in the Federal Capital Territory. On June 14, 2024, Azubuko Nwakama, a staff member of Liberty Radio, was attacked and robbed at Panteka Market in Mpape. After more than a year of investigation, the police announced the arrest of three suspects in August 2025. In January 2019, Chris Edoga, a journalist with Radio Nigeria, Abuja, was attacked by armed robbers at his home in the Gwagwalada area. The hoodlums broke into his apartment, stabbed him, and carted away valuables. He was rushed to the hospital by good Samaritans but died the following day. Similarly, on September 1, 2019, an AIT journalist in Abuja lost his life after falling victim to a “one-chance” robbery syndicate. He was attacked, robbed, and fatally stabbed by the operators.
