  Victor Osimhen has risen to third on Galatasaray’s all-time foreign goalscorers’ chart following another outstanding display for the Turkish champions. The Nigeria international scored twice as Galatasaray defeated Erzurum FK 4-0 on Friday night, taking his tally for the club to 62 goals in 76 appearances. According to Turkish sports outlet, A Spor, on X on Friday, Osimhen’s brace saw him overtake former Czech Republic international Milan Baros, who scored 61 goals during his spell with the Istanbul giants. The 27-year-old has also registered 16 assists since joining Galatasaray. Only two players now stand ahead of Osimhen on the club’s foreign scorers list. Argentine striker Mauro Icardi leads with 77 goals, while Romanian legend Gheorghe Hagi is second with 72. Osimhen is also enjoying a remarkable start to the new Süper Lig season. His two goals against Erzurum FK took his tally to at least four goals across Galatasaray’s opening two league matches, making him the first player since Brazilian striker Mario Jardel in the 2000/01 season to achieve the feat. The latest milestone further highlights Osimhen’s growing importance at Galatasaray, where he has already established himself among the club’s most prolific foreign scorers.

The Nigeria Football Federation also confirmed that Moses Simon will make his 85th international appearance, while Victor Osimhen partners Akor Adams in attack. “Four changes from our win over Lesotho. As the match kicked off, Victor Osimhen scored in the third minute courtesy of an assist from Samuel Chukwueze. The Cheetahs of the Benin Republic are also pushing for an equaliser in the 12th minute of the match, but the attack was stopped by Calvin Bassey. As of 14 minutes into the game, ball possession is Nigeria 58% and Benin 42%. While both teams are on one short on target each. In the 22 minutes, Osimhen almost converted the cross made to him in the box, but unfortunately was defended by a calm Beninoise defender. In the 38th minute, Osimhen doubles the lead courtesy of another Samuel Chukwueze’s cross into the box. It is now 2-0 in favour of the Super Eagles. The Egyptian referee who serves as the first official for the game has added five minutes of extra time. Benin Republic began the kick off into the second half to put pressure on the Super Eagles. Osimhen, again, again and again. The Super Eagles forward hit a hat-trick in the 51st minute. The Super Eagles come knocking on the Cheetahs’ door again in the hunt for a fourth goal, but the effort was wasted by Wilfred Ndidi in the 68th minute.

According to a post by Fabrizio Romano on his X account on Sunday, “Despite agreement between club to club with Napoli for €75m fee, Osimhen says no to the Saudi Pro League club. Galatasaray will insist on signing him with the race now open again.” Recall that, throughout his loan spell at Galatasaray, Osimhen has been instrumental in the team’s success, scoring 37 goals in 41 appearances. His impressive performance has made him a fan favorite, and the club is optimistic about retaining him. Al-Hilal were inching towards signing Osimhen after increasing their offer to €75m to meet Napoli’s demands, and are looking to have the player’s medical soon, but with the latest development, Osimhen is yet to decide on his future.   On Thursday , Chelsea is reportedly not planning another move for Napoli striker Victor Osimhen in the upcoming January transfer window, despite previous interest in the Nigerian international. The 25-year-old, currently on loan at Galatasaray, has been in sensational form, scoring 12 goals in 15 appearances across all competitions, including two in last month’s Europa League victory over Tottenham Hotspur. Osimhen’s loan move from Napoli followed a breakdown in his relationship with the Serie A club. According to The Athletic, Chelsea, who are currently second in the Premier League table, will not pursue Osimhen in January, instead prioritising a long-term strategy to strengthen their attacking options. The London club had previously made a last-minute attempt to sign the prolific striker on a season-long loan last summer, even proposing an obligation to buy. However, the move failed to materialise, and Osimhen ended up in Turkey with Galatasaray. As reported by football.london in September, Chelsea’s initial interest demonstrated their desire to secure a reliable goalscorer. However, with a well-stocked attack including Jadon Sancho, Pedro Neto, Noni Madueke, Joao Felix, and Christopher Nkunku, the Blues are believed to be holding off on bolstering their frontline in the short term. Instead, Chelsea has identified Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap as a potential future signing, with the club scouting him alongside other striker options. It is suggested that any additions in the attacking department will be revisited next summer. Meanwhile, reports suggest that Chelsea could see player exits in January to make room in their squad. Ben Chilwell, Carney Chukwuemeka, and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall are rumoured to be among those who could leave, having struggled for regular game time under manager Enzo Maresca. Chelsea suffered a 2-1 loss to Fulham at Stamford Bridge on Boxing Day. They are set to conclude their 2024 schedule with a match against Ipswich Town on December 30.

  Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen has hailed late Super Eagles legend Rashidi Yekini as Nigeria’s greatest striker ever, despite being on course to break the former Olympiakos forward’s goalscoring record. Osimhen, who recently equalled Segun Odegbami as Nigeria’s joint second-highest goalscorer with 23 goals after netting in the 1-1 draw against Benin Republic last Thursday, still trails Yekini’s record of 37 goals in 62 appearances for the Eagles. The 25-year-old, in a video recently posted on social media, insisted that surpassing Yekini’s record would not diminish the late striker’s legacy. “No, no. I really don’t care about this. I just want to do my job and try to win games, score goals, and provide a lot of assists for my team,” Osimhen said. “Then if I equal it, I equal it, if I surpass it, I surpass it, but that doesn’t take away the fact that Rashidi Yekini is the greatest striker the Super Eagles have ever had. This record stood for a very, very long time and it still stands, so I think we should give him his flowers and also celebrate him.” Yekini, who wrote his name in Nigerian football folklore by scoring the country’s first-ever FIFA World Cup goal, dominated African football during his prime, claiming the top scorer award at the Africa Cup of Nations in consecutive tournaments – 1992 and 1994. The late striker’s impressive tally of 37 goals has stood for nearly three decades, highlighting the magnitude of his achievement and the challenge facing Osimhen in his pursuit of the record. Osimhen’s journey to potentially breaking the record has seen him emerge as one of Africa’s most lethal strikers, with the majority of his 23 goals coming in AFCON qualification matches, demonstrating his importance to the national team’s success. The on-loan Napoli man had the opportunity to reduce the gap to Yekini’s record on Monday but could not find the net after coming on as a 77th-minute substitute in Nigeria’s shock 2-1 defeat to Rwanda in Uyo. With potentially more games ahead in both the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, and the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, and with time on the young striker’s side, Osimhen has the opportunity to close in on Yekini’s record.
