Gunmen Attack APC Leaders in Kano, Kill One and Kidnap Another Within 72 Hours

Kano State has been rocked by a troubling spate of attacks targeting leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as gunmen reportedly killed one party chairman and abducted another within a 72-hour period. The latest assault occurred on Monday night in Rogo Local Government Area, where the APC Council Chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Fanka, was kidnapped after armed assailants invaded the community and killed two residents. Security sources said the attackers struck at about 11:00 p.m., operating for nearly 30 minutes before fleeing with the council chairman. Eyewitnesses said the gunmen opened fire on residents who attempted to resist the operation, killing two people instantly before whisking their target away. “We were helpless because they were heavily armed. Nobody could confront them,” a resident said. The abduction came barely 24 hours after another deadly attack in Rantan, Bebeji Local Government Area, where the APC Ward Chairman, Alhaji Garba Buba, was shot dead alongside another resident, Sulaiman Zunduma. According to residents, the attackers stormed Rantan on Sunday night, sending villagers fleeing for safety as sporadic gunfire echoed across the community. A resident, Hamza Isah Rantan, said Garba Buba was shot at his residence and later died in hospital, while Zunduma died at the scene. The APC spokesperson in Kano State, Alhaji Auwalu Soja, confirmed the killing of the ward chairman and said the party would issue an official statement on the incident. The Bebeji tragedy followed another violent attack on Chiromawa in Garun Mallam Local Government Area on Saturday, where suspected kidnappers killed three residents during a failed abduction attempt. In a statement, the Kano State Police Command spokesman, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, confirmed that security operatives rescued Sarkin Noma during the Chiromawa attack after fierce resistance from local vigilantes and residents forced the assailants to retreat. Responding to growing concerns that Kano is coming under coordinated attacks in an encounter with newsmen on Monday afternoon, the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, assured residents that the command remains in control of the security situation. The Kano State Government has assured residents of the state that the lingering emirate tussle in the state would soon be resolved. The Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, gave the assurance on Thursday while addressing newsmen in Kano, saying concrete steps have already been taken to restore lasting peace and stability. He said the administration of Governor Yusuf remains committed to dialogue with all stakeholders, stressing that the emirate matter will not be allowed to continue generating tension or undermining governance in the state. “The Kano emirship tussle will soon be resolved amicably because the state government is committed to dialogue with stakeholders,” Waiya said. He explained that the government’s approach is guided by respect for the rule of law, traditional institutions, and the collective interest of the people of Kano State. Recall that Muhammadu Sañusi II was reinstated as the 16th Emir of Kano in May 2024 following the removal of the 15th Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero, after Yusuf signed the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Law 2024. The law repealed the Kano State Emirates Council Law of 2019 and dissolved the emirate councils created under the previous administration. Speaking on the recent defection of Yusuf to the All Progressives Congress, the commissioner described the move as one that would bring significant benefits to Kano State. According to him, closer alignment with the Federal Government would attract more interventions, projects, and development initiatives in key sectors such as infrastructure, health, education, and social welfare. “The defection opens more doors for Kano. With stronger collaboration with the Federal Government, residents should expect more dividends of democracy,” Waiya said. On the political future of the deputy governor, who has not defected alongside the governor, Waiya said the decision remains a personal choice. He emphasised that the state government remains focused on governance, unity, and development, urging residents to remain calm and supportive as efforts continue to resolve outstanding issues and move Kano forward. The lawmaker representing Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Abdulmumin Jibrin, has announced his return to the All Progressives Congress and declared his support for President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid. Jibrin, who had left the APC in May 2022, made the announcement during a political gathering in his hometown, Kofa, Bebeji Local Government Area of Kano State on Sunday. Announcing his defection on his Facebook page on Monday, Jibrin said his supporters had unanimously resolved to abandon the NNPP and the Kwankwasiyya Movement to align with the APC. He wrote, “Today, in a show of solidarity, I was warmly received by thousands of my constituents in my hometown of Kofa, Bebeji, Kano. “The gathering resolved to leave the NNPP/Kwankwasiyya, join the APC, and endorse President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for a second term in office. “From the beginning, almost 2,000 scholars from my constituency have prayed special prayers for the President and sought peace, development, and progress for Kiru/Bebeji, Kano, and Nigeria altogether.” Jibrin’s return to the APC comes barely two months after he resigned from the NNPP, following his expulsion over alleged anti-party activities and non-payment of membership dues. Reacting to his suspension at the time, Jibrin described the action as “shocking and unjustified,” insisting that an interview he granted in both English and Hausa, which the party cited as the basis for his suspension, did not warrant such a “heavy penalty.” He faulted the NNPP for violating the principles of fair hearing and due process, saying he was expelled without an opportunity to defend himself. The federal lawmaker said that he had accepted the decision in good faith and would not challenge it in court. On claims that he defaulted in the payment of his membership dues, the lawmaker maintained that he had never neglected his obligations. Taking a swipe at the party’s leadership style, the former Director-General of the Tinubu Support Groups accused the NNPP of failing to value its members. Jibrin, however, thanked the NNPP for the support he enjoyed during his stay, and called on his supporters to join him in his “new journey,” while maintaining peaceful ties with those who choose to remain in the party. Kano Judiciary Sanctions Judges, Registrars For Misconduct

The Kano State Judicial Service Commission has taken disciplinary action against two court registrars and two Upper Shari’a Court judges over misconduct. This was contained in a statement issued by the spokesperson for the Kano State Judiciary, Mr Baba Jibo-Ibrahim, on Monday in Kano. He said that the decision was part of the resolutions reached at the JSC’s 80th meeting held on April 22, 2025. He said the commission, in line with its mandate, adopted the recommendations of the investigation carried out by the Judiciary Public Complaints Committee and resolved to suspend and issue formal warnings to them. Those suspended are Ibrahim Adamu, Principal Registrar II of the Kano High Court, and Maigida Lawan, Principal Registrar of the Sharia Court of Appeal. Upper Sharia Court Judges Alkali Mansur Ibrahim and Nasiru Ahmad were issued warnings. Jibo-Ibrahim said Adamu, a Principal Registrar II of the Kano High Court of Justice, was suspended without pay for six months. The statement added, “His promotion is deferred after a finding that confirmed he verbally assaulted and attempted to use physical force against his superior officer, amounting to gross misconduct in violation of the provisions of the Kano State Civil Service Rules 2004 and the JSC Regulations. “This is the second time Adamu has appeared before an investigative committee for violence-related actions at work, and he has been issued a series of queries.” The commission found Adamu’s actions to be grossly unbecoming of his office and imposed the appropriate disciplinary sanctions. The statement said Lawan, a Principal Registrar of the Kano State Sharia Court of Appeal, was suspended without pay for six months, immediately, after being found guilty of demanding and accepting improper gratification under false pretences. “The commission adopted the recommendation of the JPCC, and Lawan was demoted by one grade level (from GL-13 down to GL-12),” the statement read. He said that the commission issued a warning to Malam Mansur Ibrahim, an Upper Shari’a Court judge, after evidence confirmed he used insulting and abusive language towards a litigant. The JSC also issued a formal warning to Nasiru Ahmad, an Upper Shari’a Court judge, for ordering the detention of a judgment debtor in a manner that suggested personal interest and compromised judicial impartiality. He emphasised that discretionary powers must be exercised with the utmost fairness and objectivity to preserve public confidence in the judiciary. The JSC reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy towards misconduct and corruption. “These measures underscore the State Commission’s commitment to accountability, transparency, and the rule of law. “All judicial officers and staff are reminded to conduct themselves in a manner that reflects the honour and trust vested in them by the people of Kano State,” the statement added. Three Arrested With Fake Notes Worth N129bn In Kano

The Kano State Police Command has arrested three persons for being in possession of counterfeit currencies amounting to N129,542,826,000. The Command’s Spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, revealed this while addressing journalists at a press briefing on Tuesday. “Counterfeit currencies equivalent to a total sum of N129,542,823,000:00 were recovered,” Kiyawa said. The PPRO gave the breakdown of the fake currencies as $3,366,000, CFA51,970,000 and N1,443,000. He added that the two individuals arrested with the money and the person from who they were stolen stole had been apprehended and are in police custody, helping with investigation on the actual producers of the counterfeit money. In the same vein, the command has recovered six live ammunition, three tricycles, eight motorcycles and three parcels of 175 wraps of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp. Kiyawa further revealed that the command recovered 250 pieces of diazapam tablets, 278 sheep and seven cattle. “These approaches have resulted not only in the apprehension of criminals but also deter potential offenders from engaging in criminal activities. “Major cases of kidnapping, armed robbery, thuggery and drug dealings have been surmounted,” he explained.
