Eight Abducted WASSCE Students, 11 Others Freed In Rivers

Nineteen people, including eight students sitting for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination, have been rescued after being kidnapped by suspected pirates. The victims were held for 21 days in the Bille waterways area in the Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State. They were freed on Monday evening by a local security group known as the Royal Fouchee Security Services, also called the Amama Soldiers. The group is led by Asari-Dokubo, a former militant leader and now the traditional ruler of the Torusaramapiri community in Degema. The victims were kidnapped on May 6, when pirates attacked two boats heading to Bille. Everyone in the boats was taken, including the students. After the attack, there were many calls for their release. The kidnappers later contacted families and demanded N100 million in ransom. Speaking about the rescue, Asari-Dokubo said he and his team began the operation on Sunday after being asked to help by the Department of State Services. He also said that one of the victims had earlier paid N10 million to the kidnappers but later helped them locate the hideout. “These people were kept in terrible conditions for 21 days. They were starved and badly treated. One of them, who was released after paying N10 million, helped us find the kidnappers’ camp,” he said. Asari-Dokubo also raised concerns about a missing soldier, Lance Corporal Salihu Ibrahim, who was in one of the boats. Only his uniform and ID card were found, and he fears the soldier may have been killed. One of the suspects arrested, named Victor Friday, claimed he didn’t take part in the kidnapping. He said he only stayed in the camp and was used to running errands. He named a man called Kentebe from Bayelsa State as the leader of the gang, who is now on the run. A rescued victim, Victor Akinloye, who was also a boat driver, said they were beaten, stripped naked, and their phones and ATM cards were taken. The kidnappers also withdrew money from their accounts. Akinloye said he recognised the area where they were held. A few days later, he helped lead the rescue team to the location. When contacted, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the rescue. “Yes, I can confirm they were rescued on Monday evening through a joint effort by the police and the local security group,” Iringe-Koko said. I’m Prepared To Lead Madrid To Success, Says Xabi Alonso

New Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso declared on Monday that he possesses the energy and enthusiasm to deliver success befitting the Spanish giants as he was officially presented as Carlo Ancelotti’s successor. Alonso, who has signed a three-year contract until June 2028, will lead the team at the Club World Cup this summer, following Ancelotti’s departure to manage the Brazil national team. Madrid endured a trophyless season, losing their La Liga title to rivals Barcelona, who also defeated them in the Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup finals. The club’s European ambitions were also dashed by a heavy Champions League quarter-final defeat to Arsenal. “We have fantastic players and a team brimming with potential, capable of both a strong present and a promising future,” Alonso said at Real Madrid’s training ground. “That gives me every reason to come here full of energy and hope, aiming to bring out the best in every player and build a great team. “I am convinced that we can achieve great things, worthy of Real Madrid and all the European Cups and accomplishments amassed over so many years.” Alonso, a technically gifted central midfielder during his playing career, made 236 appearances for Madrid between 2009 and 2014, winning six trophies including the Champions League in his final season. That triumph marked Madrid’s 10th European Cup — La Décima — and the club has since added five more for a record 15 Champions League titles. The 43-year-old coach led Bayer Leverkusen to an unbeaten Bundesliga and German Cup double in the 2023-24 season, attracting attention from Europe’s elite clubs. Having been coached by managerial legends such as Ancelotti, Pep Guardiola, and José Mourinho, Alonso described the day as “special.” “It’s a day I will mark in my calendar for life,” he said. “Though I have been away for a few years, my connection with Madrid and the fans has never faded. “When I arrived at Valdebebas an hour and a half ago, it felt like a rebirth. I have the sense this is the start of a new era, as the president said.” ‘One of Our Own’ Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez welcomed Alonso back to the Spanish capital in an introductory speech. “This is a very special day for all who love Real Madrid. It marks the beginning of a new era filled with excitement and deep emotions,” Pérez said. “A coach has arrived who is among the best in the world and who understands what this badge and shirt represent. “Today, we welcome one of our own — Xabi Alonso. Welcome back home, Real Madrid.” Alonso, who also won the 2010 World Cup and two European Championships with Spain, began his coaching career after retiring from playing. Real Madrid’s Club World Cup campaign begins against Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal in Miami on 18 June, offering the first glimpse of Alonso’s project. AFP

The incidents, according to staff members of the aviation training school, occurred around 4:00 pm on Saturday. The unfortunate incident occurred during a simulated instrument approach on Runway 05 at the Ilorin International Airport. A simulated instrument approach, often referred to as simulated instrument flight is a kind of flight where a pilot flies using only the aircraft’s instruments for navigation and control. In place of instrument meteorological conditions, the pilot wears a view-limiting device, such as an IFR hood or goggles, which restricts their view of the outside environment. While no death was recorded in the incident, the two occupants of the aircraft have been hospitalized. At the time of this report, the state of the victims’ health cannot be ascertained. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau through a statement by the Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance,Mrs Bimbo Oladeji, said investigation has commenced into the root cause of the crash. The body of the accident investigation stated that the plane crashed during a simulated instrument approach on Runway 05 at Ilorin International Airport. Ex-APC Presidential Aspirant Berates NWC, Govs For Endorsing Tinubu

A former presidential aspirant of the All Progressives Congress in the 2019 election, Charles Udeogaranya, on Friday, berated the National Working Committee and governors elected on the platform of the APC for publicly endorsing President Bola Tinubu. Udeogaranya argued that failure to subject the President to a primary election in the same manner he clinched the party ticket in 2023, will inevitably rob other prospective aspirants of the opportunity to bring about a better Nigeria anchored on creativity, nationalism and prosperity. He voiced his concern in a statement issued to newsmen in Abuja, His reaction comes barely 24 hours after the 22 APC governors and the leadership of the party unanimously backed Tinubu as the party’s sole presidential candidate for the 2027 poll. The endorsement was announced on Thursday by the Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, at the APC National Summit held at the State House Banquet Hall in Abuja. Uzodimma moved the motion for Tinubu’s adoption as the APC’s sole candidate, which was seconded by the PGF Vice Chairman, Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State. Reacting, Udeogaranya insisted that there should be ‘no room for automatic tickets’ on the APC platform. “There is no room for consensus in continuous hunger, chronic poverty, economic quagmire, insecurity, nepotism, cluelessness and in the leadership of Nigeria. “Consensus is far from it. While I deeply and respectfully appreciate my fellow APC members on their Abuja summit, may I also respectfully inform you that this democracy was birthed by Thomas Jefferson in his declaration of the United States Independence in 1776. “His declaration, which was entrenched by Abraham Lincoln at his speech in Gettysburg 1863 and globally expressed by Martin Luther King Jnr in his Washington 1963 speech, will not fail in Nigeria, come 2027,” he fumed. Reacting, the Deputy National Organising Committee, Nze Chidi Duru, argued that the ruling party did the right thing. “The President has a right of first refusal. If he, however, declines the offer to run for a second term in office, we can then be talking about a primary,” he stated. Punch

AGF’s Office Blasts Atiku’s Aide Over False Allegations Of Pre-Defection Meetings

The Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice has denied allegations suggesting that the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Solicitor General of the Federation met with some governors ahead of their defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress. The response followed claims made by Mr. Paul Ibe, spokesperson to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, during a recent interview on a national television station. Ibe had insinuated that both the EFCC chairman and the Solicitor General met with a former and a serving governor from the South-South region 48 hours before they decamped to the APC. Though Ibe did not mention specific names, the Office of the AGF described the insinuation as “contemptuous” and “false,” urging the public to disregard the statement. The Special Assistant to the President on Communication and Publicity, Office of the AGF, Kamarudeen Ogundele, in a statement on Friday, said the allegation was described as “from the pit of hell.” “We wish to state categorically that the allegation is from the pit of hell, and at best, a figment of imagination of Mr. Ibe,” the statement read. Ogundele further asserted that, “We know as a fact that the EFCC chairman and the Solicitor General of the Federation never met any serving or former governor as alleged by him.” He maintained that the statement made by Ibe was an attempt to discredit the anti-corruption drive of President Bola Tinubu’s administration. “We appeal to the members of the public to disregard the insinuation as it was a feeble attempt to discredit President Bola Ahmed Tinubu led administration’s fight against corruption,” he said. The Office of the AGF reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and pursuing justice without political interference. “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration will continue to uphold the rule of law and will not falter in the fight against corruption no matter whose ox is gored,” Ogundele added. Police Chase Turns Tragic As Stray Bullet Hits WAEC Student In Ibadan

A policeman’s stray bullet has claimed the life of a young student on his way to sit for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) exams. Eyewitnesses reported that the officer, in pursuit of a fleeing vehicle along the busy Gbagi Market Road, opened fire in an attempt to stop a suspect. One of the bullets allegedly missed its target and struck a schoolboy who was riding on his father’s motorcycle alongside his twin brother. It was gathered that the boy was immediately rushed to Welfare Hospital but was declared dead on arrival. According to bystanders, the deceased and his twin were en route to their examination center at the time of the incident. The sympathizers and market traders at the scene in a protest took the boy’s body to the Oyo State Secretariat. There, demonstrators demanded immediate justice and sought an audience with Governor Seyi Makinde. In a video presently circulating online, security personnel were seen attempting to control the growing crowd, while sympathizers called for transparency, accountability, and urgent reform in police engagement protocols in public places. Ogbomoso Mogajis Reject Alaafin’s Proposed Permanent Chairman Of Oyo Council Of Obas

IBADAN – As the proposed amendment to the Oyo state council of Obas and Chiefs law seeking to designate the Alaafin of Oyo as the Permanent Chairman of the council continues to generate heat, Mogajis of the Soun Ruling Houses in Ogbomosoland have also kicked against the proposal. The amendment bill, currently under consideration by the Oyo State House of Assembly, has ignited controversy among traditional rulers and stakeholders across the state. In a strongly worded joint statement, five prominent Mogajis — Prince Olawuyi Itabiyi (Aburumaku), Prince Sikiru Oyeyiola (Gbagun), Prince Amos Olawole Olaoye (Laoye), Prince Samuel Oyebamiji Oyedeji (Bolanta), and Prince Stephen Ilufoye Layode (Odunaro) — condemned the proposed legislation, describing it as “an affront to history and tradition.” They argued that the idea of making the Alaafin a permanent chairman undermines the historical evolution of the Yoruba traditional structure, especially after the fall of the old Oyo Empire in 1837. “History is clear: the Oyo supremacy ended with the destruction of Oyo-Ile by the Fulani invasion. What followed was a new historical order that saw other Yoruba towns like Ogbomoso and Ibadan rise to prominence. Any attempt to sidestep that reality in favour of sentiment is unjust,” the statement read. The Mogajis emphasised that the current Oyo Kingdom, founded in 1875 by Prince Atiba, is distinct from the original Oyo Empire ruled by Alaafin Oranmiyan. They claimed that the present Oyo town occupies land originally belonging to Ogbomoso’s Oja lineage and recalled historical events where Ogbomoso and Ibadan provided refuge and protection to the migrating Oyos. They further argued that Ogbomoso played a vital role in halting the Fulani advance into core Yoruba land by standing firm between Ilorin and Oyo, preserving not only their town but also protecting the emerging Oyo settlement. “The powers and glory of the old Oyo Empire are buried in Katunga. What exists today is a new kingdom, and hierarchy must reflect this post-1837 history,” they asserted. Citing past legal victories, including a Supreme Court judgement in 1984 awarding disputed land to Ogbomoso over Oyo, the Mogajis pointed out that even in contemporary times, Ogbomoso’s historical and territorial relevance cannot be ignored. They reiterated that the Soun of Ogbomoso has served as chairman of the council in the past during the reign of late Oba Oladunni Oyewumi Ajagungbade III, and insisted that the rotational system must be preserved. “We reject any move to make the Alaafin the permanent chairman. Rotational leadership reflects fairness and historical accuracy. “Sentiment cannot override historical truth. We have no apology for defending the dignity and legacy of Ogbomoso,” the Mogajis stated. They advised the Oyo State House of Assembly to respect the diverse historical contributions of all Yoruba towns and uphold the rotational chairmanship structure to avoid discord and preserve unity among the traditional rulers in the state.
