JUST IN: Tinubu Decorates New Service Chiefs

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday decorated the new service chiefs with their respective ranks at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The ceremony, which began shortly after 2pm saw the President perform the decoration alongside Vice President Kashim Shettima and the spouses of the decorated officers, each dressed in their respective service uniforms. Those decorated were General Olufemi Oluyede as the Chief of Defence Staff; Lieutenant-General Wahidi Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff; Air Marshal Kennedy Aneke as Chief of Air Staff; and Vice Admiral Idi Abbas and Chief of Naval Staff. The Senate had, on Wednesday, confirmed the four nominees after a two-hour closed-door screening session where they were grilled on strategies to strengthen national security and improve coordination among the armed forces. Tinubu had earlier written the red chamber, seeking an expedited confirmation process “to ensure continuity in the nation’s security leadership.” Our correspondent observed that the ceremony was attended by senior government officials, lawmakers family members of the service chiefs and top officers from the various arms of the military. The President, Vice President and the officers’ spouses took turns pinning the new ranks on each of the decorated chiefs. The decoration came barely one week after the Presidency announced a sweeping reshuffle in the military hierarchy. In the statement signed by the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, it said the shake-up was part of efforts to inject new direction into the nation’s defence architecture. The Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major General E. A. P. Undiendeye, retained his position. Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, later told our correspondent that the changes were not connected to recent rumours of a coup plot, saying, “The President acted within his authority as Commander-in-Chief. Service chiefs can be hired and fired by the President.” On Monday, Tinubu had met privately with the new service chiefs at the Villa. They arrived in a black Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van escorted by a green Toyota Land Cruiser, and the session lasted about 40 minutes. Presidency sources said the President charged them to take decisive action against insurgents and bandits, particularly in the North. Last Friday’s reshuffle followed an October 19 report alleging that some officers were plotting to overthrow the government — a claim later dismissed by the Defence Headquarters as “false and mischievous.” The Director of Defence Information, Brigadier-General Tukur Gusau, said the alleged arrests linked to a coup were “issues of indiscipline” within the ranks, describing the report as “intended to cause unnecessary tension and distrust among the populace.”

JUST IN: Senate Confirms Bernard Doro as Minister

JUST IN: Senate Confirms Bernard Doro as Minister

The Senate on Thursday confirmed Dr Bernard Doro as minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Doro’s screening, which lasted less than 30 minutes, saw lawmakers express confidence in his experience and leadership capacity. The Plateau-born technocrat, who becomes the third minister from his state in the current administration, pledged to promote fairness and transparency in Nigeria’s humanitarian interventions. “I will create a humanitarian ecosystem that is inclusive, guided by impartiality and independence,” Doro assured senators during the session. Satisfied with his credentials and vision, the lawmakers asked him to take a bow and leave, confirming his nomination without objection. Tinubu had earlier written to the Senate requesting Doro’s confirmation in line with Section 147 (2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). Senate President Godswill Akpabio read the letter at plenary and referred it to the Committee of the Whole for immediate action. Doro’s nomination came after the elevation of his predecessor, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, who now serves as the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress. Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga had earlier described Doro as a highly qualified professional with over 20 years of experience spanning clinical practice, pharmaceutical management, and strategic leadership roles in Nigeria and the United Kingdom. Born on January 23, 1969, in Kwall, Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State, Doro holds degrees in Pharmacy and Law, an MBA in IT-driven business strategy, and a Master’s in Advanced Clinical Practice. “He is an Independent Prescriber and Advanced Clinical Practitioner with NHS frontline experience across urgent care, walk-in centres, GP practices, and hospital settings,” Onanuga noted. With Thursday’s confirmation, Doro is expected to be sworn in as a member of the Federal Executive Council at the next meeting.

Reps Approve Tinubu’s $2.35bn External Loan Request

Reps Approve Tinubu’s .35bn External Loan Request

The House of Representatives on Wednesday approved President Bola Tinubu’s request to secure a total of $2.347bn from the international capital market to part-finance the 2025 budget deficit and refinance maturing Eurobonds. The approval followed the consideration and adoption of a report presented by the House Committee on Aids, Loans, and Debt Management, chaired by Hon. Abubakar Hassan Nalaraba, during plenary presided over by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas. Since assuming office in May 2023, President Bola Tinubu’s administration has secured substantial external financing to support government programmes and fiscal operations. Between May 2023 and May 2025, Nigeria obtained approximately $7.2bn in external loans from the World Bank, aimed at bolstering key economic reforms and development initiatives. In addition, the government received approval for a $1 billion facility from the African Development Bank, expected to be disbursed between 2024 and 2025. Further strengthening its external financing portfolio, the House of Representatives in October 2025 approved a new borrowing plan, including $1.23bn to part-finance the 2025 budget and a $500m debut Sovereign Sukuk to be issued in the international capital market. These financing initiatives form part of the administration’s broader strategy to bridge budget deficits, refinance maturing debts, and stimulate economic growth through targeted investments. According to the committee’s report, “The new borrowing plan comprises $1.23bn to fund the 2025 budget deficit and $1.12bn to refinance Nigeria’s Eurobond maturing in November 2025.” The Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, who presided over the Committee on Supply where the report was considered, put the request before the House at plenary. “The Committee on Supply considered the request of Mr President and made these recommendations. Do we accept these recommendations,” he asked, to which members replied in the affirmative. Adopting the recommendations of the committee, the House authorised the Federal Government to “Implement the external borrowing component of the 2025 Appropriation Act amounting to ₦1.84tn (approximately $1.23bn) at the budget exchange rate of ₦1,500 to $1.” Lawmakers also approved for the government to access the loans through Eurobond issuance, loan syndication, bridge financing facilities, or direct borrowing from international financial institutions. In addition, the House endorsed President Tinubu’s proposal to issue Nigeria’s first-ever Sovereign Sukuk bond of up to $500m in the international capital market, with or without a credit guarantee. Recall that President Tinubu, in his earlier correspondence to the National Assembly, explained that the borrowing plan was necessary to bridge the gap between projected revenue and expenditure in the 2025 fiscal year and to enable the government to meet its debt obligations as they fall due.

Senate Hails Tinubu Over Nigeria’s Exit From FATF Grey List

Senate Hails Tinubu Over Nigeria’s Exit From FATF Grey List

The Senate on Tuesday lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit, and other key institutions for their roles in securing Nigeria’s removal from the Financial Action Task Force Grey List, described as a major victory for the nation’s financial integrity and global reputation. The motion was sponsored by Senator Emmanuel Udende under matters of urgent public importance pursuant to Orders 41 and 51 of the Senate Standing Orders, 2023 (as amended). Moving the motion, Udende said Nigeria’s delisting by FATF reflects the country’s remarkable progress in addressing strategic deficiencies in its Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) framework and demonstrates its strong commitment to global financial integrity standards. He recalled that Nigeria’s previous inclusion on the FATF Grey List had subjected the country to “heightened international monitoring, scrutiny, and reputational risks, which adversely affected investor confidence and limited access to global financial markets.” The senator credited the development to “the successful implementation of extensive reforms and policy measures by the Executive Arm of Government, the National Assembly, and several regulatory and enforcement agencies.” In its resolution, the Senate recognised “the invaluable leadership and contributions of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the President of the Senate, the NFIU, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, the Central Bank of Nigeria, and other relevant stakeholders whose coordinated actions culminated in this significant national achievement.” Lawmakers expressed delight that the delisting has boosted investor confidence and reassured the international community of Nigeria’s renewed commitment to transparency, accountability, and global financial standards. “The delisting has boosted investor confidence and reassured the international community of Nigeria’s renewed commitment to transparency, accountability, and global financial standards. “Nigeria’s financial and regulatory systems have regained international credibility and compliance with FATF recommendations, enhancing the country’s reputation as a safe and attractive destination for foreign investment,” the motion noted. The Senate further observed that Nigerian financial institutions previously burdened by “additional scrutiny, high compliance costs, and delayed transactions” now enjoy smoother, faster, and more cost-efficient cross-border operations, improving trade facilitation and remittance inflows. The motion also highlighted the long-term benefits of Nigeria’s delisting, including “transformative impacts on the economy through sustained foreign direct investment across key sectors such as energy, technology, agriculture, and manufacturing,” as well as a stronger naira, greater regulatory stability, and job creation. Adopting the motion, the Senate resolved to commend the President and urged relevant financial and enforcement agencies to consolidate the gains by maintaining continuous compliance with international standards to prevent relapse. The lawmakers also mandated the Senate Committee on Anti-Corruption and Financial Crimes to sustain legislative oversight and policy reviews to further strengthen Nigeria’s financial governance. Nigeria was first placed on the FATF Grey List in 2021 following concerns about weaknesses in its anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing regime. The country’s removal from the FATF Grey List was officially announced at the FATF October 2025 Plenary in Paris, France. The decision followed the country’s successful implementation of a 19-point action plan aimed at strengthening its anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing framework. The global watchdog for financial crimes had in February 2023 placed Nigeria on its grey list after identifying strategic deficiencies in its AML/CFT systems. Over the past two years, Nigeria has worked closely with the Inter-Governmental Action Group Against Money Laundering in West Africa and the FATF to address the gaps through sweeping legislative and institutional reforms.

A former Manchester United star, Gary Neville, has declared Arsenal the frontrunners to clinch the Premier League title this season. According to Sky Sports on Monday, Neville believes that Mikel Arteta’s squad can secure the championship without needing to amass 90 or 100 points, stressing that their current consistency will be key to success. Following their 1-0 victory against Crystal Palace on Sunday, Arsenal sit four points clear at the top of the Premier League standings. They hold a seven-point advantage over reigning champions Liverpool and are six points ahead of Manchester City, reinforcing Neville’s confidence in their title. “This has got to be them, hasn’t it? They’re not much better than before, but they are consistent — and that’s what matters this season. “They don’t need 100 points or even 90 to win the league. A total in the mid or high 80s should be enough, and they can definitely achieve that.” Neville said on his podcast. Kanu Abandons Plan to Enter Defence, Insists on No-Case Submission

Kanu Abandons Plan to Enter Defence, Insists on No-Case Submission

The detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, on Monday, abandoned his earlier plan to call witnesses in his ongoing trial before the Federal High Court in Abuja. Kanu is being prosecuted on seven counts of terrorism charges brought against him by the Federal Government. On Friday, Kanu had prayed the court for an adjournment after informing the trial judge, Justice James Omotosho, that his former legal team, led by a former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), had yet to release his case file to him. Meanwhile, Kanu had earlier expressed his readiness to open his defence in a written application to the court, in which he indicated his intention to call witnesses and requested the issuance of witness summons. However, at the resumed hearing on Monday, Kanu told the court that upon reviewing the case file, he had concluded that there was no valid charge against him. He argued that since he believed the charges were unlawful and that the prosecution had failed to establish any case, there was no need for him to proceed with his defence. In response, the trial judge, Justice James Omotosho, directed Kanu to file a written address formally stating his position and to serve the prosecution accordingly. Justice Omotosho further advised the IPOB leader to consult experts in criminal law to understand the possible legal implications of his decision. The judge thereafter adjourned the case to November 4, 5, and 6 for the adoption of final written addresses, based either on Kanu’s position that no case had been established against him or for him to proceed with his defence if he decides otherwise.
