Makinde Promises Speedy Completion Of Ido-Eruwa Road, Flags Off Redevelopment Of Eruwa Farm Settlement

Adeleke Maria   Oyo State governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, has performed the ground-breaking ceremony for the upgrade of moribund 3,250 hectares Eruwa Farm Settlement to an Agribusiness Industrial Hub. The governor said that the project, once completed, would put Ibarapaland on the global agricultural map and create thousands of jobs for youths in the zone and across the state. Governor Makinde, who stated this on Thursday, at the Old Farm Settlement, Eruwa, Oyo State, added that his administration would also complete the Ido-Eruwa Road within the next one year, charging residents of Ibarapa zone to make investors feel welcome, when the new agribusiness hub is completed. He noted that the government recently approved the release of a tranche of N2 billion to the contractor handling the road project so as to fast-track its progress. According to the governor, the administration established the Oyo State Agribusiness Development Agency (OYSADA) as a special purpose vehicle to drive agribusiness in the state and that so far, the state has achieved great successes and gone ahead to become a model for other states, and even some African countries, in the area of agribusiness He equally expressed the confidence that the new Agribusiness Hub in Eruwa would also be a success story like the Fasola Agribusiness Hub, as, according to him, development partners and investors, who have already committed to bringing in their money to the facility, were present at the ground-breaking ceremony. He said: “About five years ago, we started what I will call the journey to make agribusiness the driver of Oyo State’s economy. Immediately we came into office, we got access to a N7.6 billion loan facility taken by the previous administration and our plan was to use this loan to ensure that two of our moribund farm settlements are converted to agribusiness hubs. maintained that the Hub has seen an influx of 12 medium to large national and international private companies occupying the 1,150 hectares of land for crop production, livestock rearing, and processing for domestic consumption and export. He added that these companies have been contributing to supporting smallholder farmers in the state through training, taking their crops for processing and development of early generation seeds that will help yields across the state. In his special remarks, Director-General, Nigeria, African Development Bank (AfDB), Dr Abdul Kamara, lauded Governor Makinde for resuscitating moribund farm settlements and putting the state on the path of agribusiness, which he described as consistent with AfDB’s approach to rural and economic transformation and aligns with its focus to feed Africa, guarantee food security, nutrition, agro-processing, agricultural transformations, industrialisation and improving the quality of lives for Africans. He assured that the AfDB would give its maximum support to the speedy execution of the project. In their separate goodwill messages, the Senior Special Adviser on Industrialisation to the President of AfDB, Prof. Banji Oyeleran-Oyeyinka; the Olu of Igbooro, Oba Olajide Titiloye; and the chairman, Eruwa Council of Elders, Chief Joseph Peluola, severally appreciated Governor Makinde for seeing the future of agriculture sector and making the project a reality. They urged the governor to ensure the speedy completion of the Ido-Eruwa road and equally enhance microfinance banks to give financial support to more farmers. Delivering a vote of thanks, the Speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, equally lauded Governor Makinde, noting that the Eruwa Agribusiness Industrial Hub would be a legacy project for him after his tenure. NBA Superstar LeBron Steps Back From Social Media Due To Negative Takes

NBA superstar, LeBron James, said on Wednesday he was taking an indefinite hiatus from social media after sharing a post which railed against “negative” coverage in US media. James, who has some 212 million combined followers on his Instagram and X accounts, announced his break from social media after sharing a post by Rich Kleiman, the long-time agent of NBA star Kevin Durant. “With so much hate and negativity in the world today, it confuses me why some of the national sports media still think that the best way to cover sports is through negative takes,” Kleiman wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “I for one find it all a waste of breath.” Los Angeles Lakers ace James shared the post to his followers with a one word comment: “AMEN!!” The 39-year-old then followed up that post to confirm he was leaving social media — for now. “And with that said, I’ll holla at y’all! Getting off social media for the time being. Y’all take care,” James wrote on X. It is not the first time James has stepped away from social media. The all-time record points scorer has taken breaks before, but usually to concentrate on his basketball. James had hinted at disaffection with online criticism following the Lakers’ win over Utah on Tuesday, when Los Angeles rookie Dalton Knecht erupted for 37 points. Talking about Knecht’s performance, James said he had been aware of the rookie’s talent from watching his collegiate career at Tennessee. “Everybody on the internet calls me a liar all the time,” James said. “They say I lie about everything. So what am I now? I’ve been said it. I watched him. I watched Tennessee a lot.” AFP

Former UK Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott Passes Away At 86

Britain’s former deputy prime minister, John Prescott, who served under Tony Blair and with him helped transform the country’s Labour party, has died at 86, his family said on Thursday. “We are deeply saddened to inform you that our beloved husband, father and grandfather, John Prescott, passed away yesterday (Wednesday) at the age of 86,” a statement read. Blair, the privately educated lawyer who appointed working-class Prescott to help appease the Labour left as he moved the party to the centre ground, said he was “devastated” at Prescott’s death. “There was no one quite like him in British politics,” he told BBC radio. Keir Starmer, who became Labour’s first prime minister since 2010 after a landslide general election win in July, called Prescott “a true giant of the Labour movement”. “He was a staunch defender of working people and a proud trade unionist. During a decade as deputy prime minister, he was one of the key architects of a Labour government that transformed the lives of millions of people across the nation,” he added. “So much of John’s work set the path for those of us fortunate enough to follow. From leading climate negotiations to fighting regional inequality, his legacy will live on well beyond his lifetime.” Prescott, a former merchant seaman and trade union activist who served as a member of parliament for Hull in northern England for four decades, died “peacefully” at a care home, his wife Pauline, and two sons said. “He did so surrounded by the love of his family and the jazz music of Marian Montgomery,” they added. Prescott, who was appointed to the House of Lords, suffered a stroke in 2019 and had been suffering from Alzheimer’s. He stopped being a member of the upper chamber of parliament in July because of his health problems. Plain-speaking, Prescott served for 10 years as Blair’s deputy following Labour’s landslide 1997 general election win. During a campaign stop in north Wales he punched a protester who threw an egg at him. But he also acted as a mediator between Blair and his finance minister Gordon Brown, who also helmed the transformation of Labour in the 1990s and who had designs on power. Prescott’s brief included the environment and transport, as well as leading negotiations for Britain for the international Kyoto Protocol on climate change. Blair said in a 2007 letter to Prescott that he saw his role as “smoothing out colleagues and sorting out colleagues and trouble-shooting”. “The completely unique Prescott blend of charm and brutality… got you through the decade, kept the government together and above all, gave me a lot of fun. I was lucky to have you as my deputy,” he told him. AFP

Dangote Resumes Buying US Crude Oil After Three Months.

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has recommenced the purchase of crude oil from the United States in its ongoing efforts to ramp up oil production and enhance its refining capacity. The new purchase comes after a three-month hiatus in purchasing crude from foreign countries, focusing instead on domestic supply. A report by Bloomberg on Wednesday said the cargo conveying two million barrels of WTI Midland crude from Chevron Corp is due to be delivered to the refinery next month. The latest development may be an indication that the naira-for-crude initiative by the Federal Government may have stalled or that the refinery is not getting enough crude supply from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited. THE LOUNGE: Why Should Housewives Be Understanding While Side-chics Live Large on Husband’s Wealth0:00 / 0:00 “Dangote refinery purchased its first shipment of US oil after a hiatus of three months as the site continues to ramp up production. “The plant purchased about two million barrels of WTI Midland crude from Chevron Corp,” the report said. Chevron booked the supertanker Azure Nova to load crude from the US Gulf around December 5 to Dangote, according to tanker fixtures seen by Bloomberg. Earlier this year, Dangote was typically receiving one or two supertankers of US crude every month alongside domestic supplies. However, these imports were reduced around August following an agreement with the federal government that the NNPCL would supply crude oil to the refinery in naira rather than dollars. The agreement stated that the refinery would take up to 400,000 barrels a day of Nigerian crude paid for in local currency. Dangote is taking a growing role in US and European oil markets, after gradually raising purchases of crude from Nigeria and the US. The plant’s pull on those barrels increases the competition for the oil faced by traditional buyers in Europe. The report added that reasons for the return to US imports remain unclear, though a report from Sparta Commodities earlier this week suggests lower shipping costs may have made US oil more affordable in Europe recently. On Monday, The PUNCH reported the refinery was seeking to raise billions of dollars to import crude oil and increase production. The report said the Chairman of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, was in concrete talks with commercial lenders, development banks, oil traders, and other industry participants to raise funds for crude supplies to turn into refined products. According to the report, the refinery would need a minimum supply of 300,000 b/d to secure more crude to reach its refinery’s capacity. On Tuesday, the plant began refined petroleum product shipping to West African countries, a sign to traders that the mega-refinery’s operations could soon potentially shake up regional fuel markets. IOCs couldn’t build refineries In another development on Wednesday, the Dangote Group said it had done what international oil companies could not do by building a refinery in Nigeria. The Vice President of Oil and Gas at Dangote Industries Limited, Devakumar Edwin, stated this while receiving members of the Senate Committee on Trade and Investment at the refinery complex in Lekki, Lagos State. During the visit led by the Chairman of the committee, Sadiq Umar, Edwin told the senators that the Dangote Group did what Shell, Chevron, or ExxonMobil has never done in any part of the world. According to him, a Nigerian company took up the challenge to build the largest single-train refinery in the world. He said about six companies in the world could do the same. “Here, a Nigerian company took up the challenge which nobody like Shell or Chevron or ExxonMobil has ever done in any part of the world. So, the Nigerian company—Dangote Projects Limited—took up the challenge and built the refinery on time. And this is the world’s largest single-train refinery,” he said. Speaking, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Trade and Investment, Umar, assured the refinery of the National Assembly’s support. According to him, the $20bn project is a national asset that must be protected. “For us as legislators, you can rest assured that we know what you have done here, we know what it means to the country. We will do anything within our power to see how we support you to succeed so that Nigeria can succeed. “This investment we have seen here is an investment for the country and for the world, not necessarily for Dangote himself. It is our responsibility to see what we need to do to encourage him. “I am sure you can see a lot of actions in what the president has done to support him so that the country will be better for it,” the senator said. Located within the Lekki Free Zone in Lagos, the 650,000-capacity began production in January this year, releasing diesel and aviation fuel into the local market while exporting to other countries. In September, the facility started producing premium motor spirits. This is after weeks-long controversies with IOCs over crude supply. The President of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, repeatedly accused the IOCs of refusing to sell crude to him, saying it was an attempt to sabotage the refinery. After presidential interventions, the refinery started getting crude in naira to boost the local supply of petrol in naira. It was learned that the refinery might export petrol to other West African countries soon. Punch

ACF: Tinubu’s Policies Aggravating Northern Challenges

The Arewa Consultative Forum has called on President Bola Tinubu to take immediate action to address the pressing issues of insecurity, education, and economic development in northern Nigeria. Specifically, the ACF urged the President to review and reassess his administration’s economic policies to ensure they have a human face, given the current hardship Nigerians are facing. The pan-northern socio-political organisation stated this in a communique released to newsmen at the end of its National Executive Council meeting in Kaduna, on Wednesday. The communique, signed by ACF’s National Publicity Secretary, Prof Tukur Muhammad-Baba, expressed dissatisfaction with the current economic policies, which the forum claimed have worsened the condition of Northern Nigeria. “The policies of the current Federal Government have continued to make matters much worse, with little indications of needed sensitivity to the precarious existential conditions of Arewa people. “The time to think big is now. Notwithstanding the parlous state of Arewa’s glaring challenging economic conditions, the policies of the current Federal Government have continued to make matters much worse,” the ACF said. The forum also expressed concerns over the escalating security situation, noting that it had become a major challenge to human existence. It noted that security was an irreducible minimum of human existence, adding that the government must take responsibility for safeguarding lives and property. “Those whose responsibility it is to provide security saying they are doing their best is unacceptable. The minimum duty of the government is to safeguard life and property, and doing anything less is a failure,” the communique added. On education, the forum emphasised the dire state of Northern Nigeria’s education system, particularly the alarming number of out-of-school children. “Statistics of out-of-school children, of which Arewa has an overwhelming proportion, are cogent pointers to the situation. “A lot has been done, but the truth is, far more needs to be done,” the ACF noted. It urged northern governors to adopt a strong, coordinated approach to policy planning and implementation, particularly in areas such as security, education, and agricultural production. The communiqué stated, “Despite the dire economic conditions in Arewa, the policies of the current Federal Government have continued to worsen the situation, showing little sensitivity to the precarious existential challenges faced by the Arewa people. “Succinctly stated, economic reforms, while indeed desirable, should not impoverish the same people they are meant to serve; the people may not be alive to reap the putative benefits. “In view of the above, the meeting resolved as follows: calls on the Federal Government under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to review, reassess, reevaluate and re-order the direction of its economic policies with a view to giving it the needed human face. “Strongly calls on the governors of the northern states to adopt a strong, coordinated approach to policy planning and implementation, as these relate to security, education, skills acquisition, agricultural production, health services, etc. “Calls on the Federal Government to be receptive to criticisms, suggestions, etc., not only in line with the principles of democracy but also because they improve, not retard the policy process for the ultimate benefit of the people. “Calls on the northern elite, in all spheres of life, to take it upon themselves to counter negative narratives about the North and also imbibe the spirit of community service, individually and collectively. The interests of the North will be best served by northerners.” It added that “The growing food crisis with every through short and long term measures, including imports where needs be, but the ultimate solution is to achieve food self-sufficiency. “People should take responsibility for our fast-growing population. Public policy and the law should be adopted to achieve a balance. “Poor electricity supply will continue to hamper efforts to ameliorate poverty, unemployment and underdevelopment in the region. These have to be addressed with utmost urgency.” Speaking earlier on insecurity, the ACF lamented the operations of bandits and terrorists, killing and abducting citizens. Its Chairman, Mamman Mike Osuman (SAN), stressed the urgent need for collective action to address the deteriorating situation. Osuman highlighted the alarming rate of attacks, kidnappings, and killings in the region, stressing that these incidents had become too common. He said, “The North is currently under siege from various threats, including bandits, terrorists, kidnappers, and unjust treatment. We must come together to address these challenges. “As leaders, we must demonstrate prudence and concern for domestic and environmental problems affecting our region. “It is imperative that our governors and legislators work in synergy with traditional leaders to combat the ills plaguing our region. “We must address the internal crimes perpetuated by our sons and daughters, and work towards preventing these trends. “There is a need for public awareness campaigns to educate our people on the importance of self-defence and preservation. “We must develop local strategies to combat illegal mining by foreigners and locals in our region.” The forum endorsed the Shekarau-led League of Northern Democrats, convened by elder statesman, Dr Umar Ardo, and recently launched at a meeting attended by key Northern elites in Abuja. The League of Northern Democrats is a group comprising former governors, senators, and other prominent figures from the region. According to the chairman, the objectives of the group aligned with the ACF’s goals. He, however, stressed the need for inward reflection and immediate action, rather than focusing solely on long-term political solutions. The chairman emphasised the importance of collective action, inclusive leadership, and collaboration among stakeholders to address the region’s security challenges. “The ACF commends the League of Northern Democrats’ objectives, which align with our goals, but we must focus on immediate action and inward reflection. “We must prioritise economic empowerment, education and skills development, infrastructure development, and security and justice to revitalise the North,” Osuman said. The SUBEB boss also assured that the exercise was continuous as more successful applicants would still be employed in due course.

Suspected Boko Haram Ambushes NSCDC Team, Seven Officials Missing

Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have ambushed a monitoring team of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). The attack occurred on Monday, in the Farin-Kasa area of Chukun Local Government Area, Kaduna State when the operatives were inspecting the National Grid installation in Shiroro, Niger State. Disclosing this in a statement, NSCDC spokesperson, DCC Afolabi Babawale, said the NSCDC team, comprised of nine officers and 71 other ranks, was mobilised in response to recent attacks on power lines, a development that had led to a blackout due in northern part of Nigeria. “As they patrolled vulnerable areas, they encountered stranded expatriates near Dagwachi Village and allowed them to join the convoy for safety. Unbeknownst to the team, over 200 armed Boko Haram militants had laid a deadly ambush from a hilltop, ready to unleash a torrent of gunfire on the unsuspecting convoy,” he said. “Determined and resourceful, the NSCDC operatives fought back valiantly, managing to neutralise over 50 insurgents during the exchange. However, the chaos left seven officers unaccounted for, prompting an urgent search in the bush for their whereabouts. Those who sustained injuries are currently receiving medical treatment.” On his part, NSCDC Commandant-General, Ahmed Audi, condemned the attack, labelling it as a cowardly act against personnel committed to the nation’s defence. He praised the courage and determination of the operatives, emphasising the Corps’ unwavering commitment to safeguarding critical national assets and infrastructure amid rising security challenges. Tinubu, Lula, Jinping, Ramaphosa,Others Unite To Combat Hunger.

World leaders have embraced Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, an initiative spearheaded by Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva at the 19th Group of 20 (G20) Summit, which rounded off last night in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil’s commercial capital. “This bold and visionary step underscores Brazil’s leadership in addressing one of the most urgent and persistent challenges facing our world today”, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, said while addressing leaders at the meeting. Among the leaders are: United States (U.S.) President Joe Biden; Chinese President Xi Jinping; United Kingdom (UK) Prime Minister Keir Stammer; French President Emmanuel Macron; Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and host President da Silva. Eighty-two countries are members of the alliance against hunger. After last-minute negotiations, Javier Milei’s Argentina became the 82nd country to join the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty, Brazil’s initiative launched during the two-day summit. With Buenos Aires’ decision, all G20 countries are now members. The African Union, the European Union, nine financial institutions, 24 international organisations, and 31 philanthropic and non-governmental entities, totalling 148 are founding members. President Tinubu said: “The creation of this Alliance marks a significant milestone in our global efforts to eradicate hunger and poverty, and it also sends a powerful message of solidarity to vulnerable populations around the globe. “By fostering collaboration between governments, international organisations, and civil society, this initiative offers a comprehensive approach, not only to addressing immediate needs, but also tackling the structural causes of hunger and poverty.” President Tinubu compared the global initiative to one of the eight priority areas he outlined during his inauguration 18 months ago, expressing Nigeria’s eagerness to adopt the international best practices to advance its economic development. He said Nigeria’s endorsement of the Global Alliance is a significant step in its efforts to address hunger and poverty by leveraging international cooperation and resources to bolster domestic strategies. He added that by supporting the initiative, Nigeria had also demonstrated a solid commitment to the realisation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 1, which focuses on eradicating poverty, and SDG 2, which aims to achieve zero hunger. President Tinubu added: “These goals are at the core of Nigeria’s development agenda, and the Alliance offers a platform to accelerate progress towards them. “By collaborating with international partners, Nigeria aims to leverage best practices, innovative solutions, and financial support to enhance its efforts to combat poverty and hunger. “The endorsement reinforces Nigeria’s role as a key player in global efforts to promote sustainable development and improve the quality of life for all its citizens.” President Tinubu called for the reform of the United Nations Security Council to ensure its continued relevance in global interventions. He reiterated Nigeria’s readiness and capability to represent Africa within the global elite assembly. The President urged the G20 to champion the noble ideal, having admitted the African Union (AU) as a group member. President Tinubu said: “The Security Council should expand its permanent and non-permanent member categories to reflect the world’s diversity and plurality. Africa deserves priority in this and two permanent seats should be allocated to it with equal rights and responsibilities. Nigeria stands ready and willing to serve as a representative of Africa in this capacity.” S’Africa backs Brazil’s fight against poverty President Cyril Ramaphosa yesterday said South Africa fully supported the Brazilian Presidency’s focus on social inclusion and the fight against hunger. Speaking at the working session on social inclusion and the fight against higher and poverty, Ramaphosa said it was only through an integrated and comprehensive system of social support that the G20 will be able to assist the most vulnerable in society. According to the World Bank, nearly 700 million people are currently living in extreme poverty and the Sub-Saharan Africa region accounts for 67 per cent of these people. Ramaphosa said that at the same time, countries with developing economies were faced with declining growth prospects, declining investments and rising debt. He said these challenges had the potential to derail development gains and progress made toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. “We must, therefore, urgently redouble efforts to eliminate poverty and hunger. We must advance gender equality. And we must overcome the planetary crises of climate change, biodiversity loss, environmental degradation and pollution,” Ramaphosa said. Guterres urges reforms United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called for reform of global governance institutions. He said: “We face a global governance deficit and a global trust deficit. Poverty, inequalities, and the climate crisis are getting worse, and peace is getting further out of reach. “We need global solutions rooted in the UN Charter. But our institutions are not keeping up. That was the reason for the Pact for the Future agreed in the UN Summit of the Future to strengthen multilateralism and global governance. “Starting with the Security Council, which is steadily losing its effectiveness and legitimacy. As wars grind on, innocent people are paying a terrible price, and the Security Council is unable to stop them. Security Council reform must be pursued with determination and not become a mirage. “Everywhere around the world, peace requires actions grounded in the values of the UN Charter, the rule of law, UN resolutions and the principles of sovereignty, political independence and the territorial integrity of States.” G20 anticipates change in U.S. foreign policy The G20 leaders discussed a likely shifting global order, trying to shore up multilateral consensus before U.S. President-elect Donald Trump returns to power in January. Their discussions of trade, climate change and international security anticipated the sharp U.S. policy changes that Trump vows upon taking office, from tariffs to the promise of a negotiated solution to the war in Ukraine. Osimhen – Yekini Remains Nigeria’s Greatest

Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen has hailed late Super Eagles legend Rashidi Yekini as Nigeria’s greatest striker ever, despite being on course to break the former Olympiakos forward’s goalscoring record. Osimhen, who recently equalled Segun Odegbami as Nigeria’s joint second-highest goalscorer with 23 goals after netting in the 1-1 draw against Benin Republic last Thursday, still trails Yekini’s record of 37 goals in 62 appearances for the Eagles. The 25-year-old, in a video recently posted on social media, insisted that surpassing Yekini’s record would not diminish the late striker’s legacy. “No, no. I really don’t care about this. I just want to do my job and try to win games, score goals, and provide a lot of assists for my team,” Osimhen said. “Then if I equal it, I equal it, if I surpass it, I surpass it, but that doesn’t take away the fact that Rashidi Yekini is the greatest striker the Super Eagles have ever had. This record stood for a very, very long time and it still stands, so I think we should give him his flowers and also celebrate him.” Yekini, who wrote his name in Nigerian football folklore by scoring the country’s first-ever FIFA World Cup goal, dominated African football during his prime, claiming the top scorer award at the Africa Cup of Nations in consecutive tournaments – 1992 and 1994. The late striker’s impressive tally of 37 goals has stood for nearly three decades, highlighting the magnitude of his achievement and the challenge facing Osimhen in his pursuit of the record. Osimhen’s journey to potentially breaking the record has seen him emerge as one of Africa’s most lethal strikers, with the majority of his 23 goals coming in AFCON qualification matches, demonstrating his importance to the national team’s success. The on-loan Napoli man had the opportunity to reduce the gap to Yekini’s record on Monday but could not find the net after coming on as a 77th-minute substitute in Nigeria’s shock 2-1 defeat to Rwanda in Uyo. With potentially more games ahead in both the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, and the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, and with time on the young striker’s side, Osimhen has the opportunity to close in on Yekini’s record.
