Yahaya Bello Calms Courtroom Crowd After Judge Walks Out Over Chaos

Former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, billed to be arraigned at the Federal Capital Territory High Court, on Wednesday, took over crowd control of the courtroom when Justice Maryann Anenih walked out. Shortly after the judge left the courtroom, Bello who sat in the front of the courtroom stood up and moved to the surging crowd. He immediately directed his followers and sympathisers to vacate their seats and leave the courtroom. His actions doused the tension without resistance, as the followers left the courtroom one after the other. To ensure sanity in the courtroom, the former governor sat at the entrance to the courtroom and ensured that none of his followers disobeyed the order of the court, Meanwhile, Kemi Pinheiro, SAN is leading the Federal Government legal team for the arraignment while Joseph Dauda, SAN, leads the legal team of the former governor in the 16-count charges. Bello was declared wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in April 2024. Trump Threatens Trade War On Mexico, Canada, China

China and Mexico lashed out Tuesday after President-elect Donald Trump threatened to begin his presidency with an immediate trade war against the top three United States economic partners. Trump made his threat in social media posts, announcing huge import tariffs against neighbours Canada and Mexico, and also rival China if they don’t stop illegal immigration and drug smuggling into the US. China responded that “no one will win a trade war,” while Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum warned that “for every tariff, there will be a response in kind.” A Canadian government source said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called Trump and had a “productive” discussion, without giving further detail. Such tariffs threaten to disrupt the global economy, deepen already fierce tensions with China, and upend relations with the US’s two largest neighbours. Nervous stock markets saw “volatile trading conditions” as they digested the news, said an analyst at City Index, Fawad Razaqzada. On his Truth Social platform, Trump said late Monday that he would enact the tariffs when he takes office on January 20, 2025, if his — vaguely worded — demands were not met. The posts signal Trump’s intention to return to the governing style of his first presidency when he regularly shocked Washington and US partners with abrupt, major policy shifts which he announced on social media. They also confirmed that Trump is serious about his major campaign promise to use the US economic muscle as leverage on issues having little to do with trade — namely his claim that the US is under siege by foreign crime and dangerous migrants. On Tuesday, Trump named two important figures to his economic team: Jamieson Greer as his trade representative and Kevin Hassett as his top economic advisor, heading the White House National Economic Council. Both had roles in his first administration, with Greer serving as the Chief of Staff to former US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer. “I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25 per cent tariff on all products coming into the United States,” Trump earlier posted. “This tariff will remain in effect until such time as drugs, in particular Fentanyl and all illegal aliens stop this invasion of our country!” he said. In another post, Trump said he would be slapping China with a 10 per cent tariff, “above any additional tariffs,” because the world’s second-biggest economy was failing to execute fentanyl smugglers. The spokesman for China’s embassy in the US, Liu Pengyu, told AFP, “China believes that China-US economic and trade cooperation is mutually beneficial in nature.” Mexico’s Sheinbaum fired back at Trump, saying his tariffs diplomacy was “not acceptable” and based on erroneous claims. “It is not with threats or tariffs that the migration phenomenon will be stopped, nor the consumption of drugs in the United States,” she said. Sheinbaum pointed out that the Mexican narcotics industry largely exists to serve demand in the US. “Seventy per cent of the illegal weapons seized from criminals in Mexico come from your country. “Tragically, it is in our country that lives are lost to the violence resulting from meeting the drug demand in yours,” she said. A senior adviser at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies, William Reinsch, said Trump’s online threats may be bluster — a strategy of “threaten and then negotiate.” However, Trump’s first White House term was marked by an aggressive and protectionist trade agenda that also targeted China, Mexico and Canada, alongside Europe. While in office, Trump launched an all-out trade war with China, imposing significant tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars of Chinese goods. China responded with retaliatory tariffs on American products, particularly affecting US farmers. Economists say tariffs can hurt US growth and fuel inflation since they are paid by importers who often pass those costs on to consumers. Trump has said he would put his Commerce Secretary-designate Howard Lutnick, a China hawk, in charge of trade policy. AFP

Kano Anti-Graft Agency Seals Warehouse, Recovers Palliative Rice Worth N1 Billion

The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Agency on Tuesday sealed a warehouse stocked with rice worth over N1bn, allegedly diverted from palliative supplies meant for public distribution. The warehouse located along Ring Road in the Nasarawa Local Government Area of the state was sealed during an operation led by the agency’s Executive Chairman, Muhuyi Rimin-Gado. The seized bags of rice, bearing President Bola Tinubu’s image and the inscription “Ramadan Kareem”, were purportedly intended for distribution during last year’s Ramadan fast. However, the agency uncovered that the items were being re-bagged under different brands for sale in Kano markets. Rimin-Gado, speaking to journalists at the scene, described the act as a blatant display of corruption and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice. “This is a clear form of corruption because these are commodities meant for the public. Considering the hardship people are facing today, it is appalling that someone would have the audacity to re-bag and sell them,” he said. The anti-corruption chief revealed that the agency recovered a re-bagging machine used for repackaging the rice and had arrested one suspect in connection with the diversion. “We are here armed with a search warrant, arrest warrant, and court order. This is part of our investigative activities to recover stolen public resources,” Rimin-Gado stated. He assured the public that a comprehensive investigation would be carried out to identify all individuals involved in the illegal activity and ensure justice is served. “Our commitment is to uncover everyone behind this act and prevent a recurrence. For now, one suspect is in custody, and we will ensure all legal procedures are followed in dealing with this case,” he added. Punch

JUST IN: Former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello Reports to EFCC

A former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, has again honoured the invitation of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over alleged misappropriation of funds. It was gathered that the embattled former governor went to the anti-graft agency office on Tuesday morning in the company of his lawyers. His visit to the commission follows the Supreme Court judgment which dismissed states’ case on the constitutionality of the anti-graft agency. It was also gathered that Bello drove himself in a black Hilux to the EFCC office with his lawyers. There were insinuations last week that he was going to visit the EFCC but the former governor’s media aides did not respond to enquiries on the information. Recall that at the last hearing on the fresh charges preferred against the former governor which is before Justice Maryanne Anenih of the Federal Capital Territory High Court Maitama in Abuja, heard on November 14, the EFCC had sought for an adjournment to tomorrow (November 27) in the fresh case it instituted against Bello, saying the 30 days window was still running for the summons earlier issued. The EFCC, however, admitted his co-defendants, Umar Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu, to administrative bail and prayed to the court for an extension of time for the 1st Defendant to appear. The matter was subsequently adjourned by the trial judge for the arraignment of Bello. Punch

Sanwo-Olu Suspends Media Aide For Factual Inaccuracies.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has suspended his Senior Special Assistant on Print Media, Mr Wale Ajetunmobi. This was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile. The statement was titled, ‘Governor Sanwo-Olu suspends aide.’ Ajetunmobi’s suspension “comes on the heels of the misrepresentation of facts on his personal X account on a past incident,” according to the statement. Akosile noted that the Sanwo-Olu-led administration “frowns at any form of extra-judicial punishment and will not be a part of any such action. That is not who we are. That is not our way.” A check by PUNCH Online on Ajetunmobi’s X account, #Riddwane, on Tuesday showed that his timeline was devoid of any such tweet as it had been deleted. Premium Times, on Sunday, November 24, 2024, reported a tweet by Ajetunmobi, tweeting as #Riddwane, in which he revealed that arsonists who burnt down the Television Continental station in Lagos during the heat of the 2020 #EndSARS protest, had been “hunted down and executed.” The suspended aide also stated that one of the “executed” arsonists was a young boy (name undisclosed) who traded in cooking gas around the Ketu area of the state. Ajetunmobi alleged that the boy was found with an AK-47 rifle. The tweet read, “The full story of people who burnt down TVC in 2020 will be told one day, with gory clips and images. One thing to note: majority of them have been hunted down and executed. “One of them, a young boy trading in cooking gas around Ketu, was found with an AK-47 at the site. Even his neighbours were shocked. But the full gist is better saved for later.” Reacting to the tweet, an X user identified as Hamlad, tweeting as #hamoye4real, asked, “Are you in the know of extra-judicial killings?” In his response, the suspended aide wrote, “Lol… you want to create a narrative in your head. What is extra-judicial killing here? Some of the people were chased by soldiers and an exchange of fire occurred. Then arsonists were overpowered and killed in the process. Others ran away. Is that an extra-judicial killing to you?” However, in a tweet by Ajetunmobi early Tuesday at 2:34 am — two days after the report, and quoting the Premium Times report on his X handle, he clarified that while the word “executed” was “erroneously used,” his tweet was his “personal opinion” and didn’t reflect the stance of his employer or his office. He also stated that “no extra-judicial killing was insinuated.” The tweet read, “This excerpt was quoted out of context and there were series of comments made under the same post, which better explained what was intended. Like I did further explained in the said tweet, no extra-judicial killing was insinuated. The word ‘executed’ was erroneously used and not intended in the context of that casual conversation. “What was written in the entire conversation reflected personal opinion and not the position of any authority or the entity in which I work. The post and other comments had been taken down, even before this publication.” In a report by PUNCH Online on October 30, 2020, it was reported that no fewer than 250 staff of TVC at Ikosi, Ketu, Lagos, were unable to work after arsonists burnt the station. Transmission gadgets, state-of-the-art studios, production rooms and operational vehicles of TVC, including cars of staff, were set ablaze. The station’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Andrew Hanlon, added that over 500 direct employees of the station had been struggling to work in temporary accommodation put up by the company. Halon stated these when Governor Sanwo-Olu visited the management and staff of the station. Punch

Reps May Clash Over Tinubu’s $2.2bn Fresh Loan Tuesday

A showdown looms in the House of Representatives this week between lawmakers elected on the platform of the ruling party and their opposition counterparts over the $2.2m (N1.77tn) loan request by President Bola Tinubu. This is as the Deputy Spokesperson of the House, Mr Philip Agbese has declared that the Green Chamber will have no trouble approving external borrowing request from President Bola Tinubu, Deputy Spokesman of the Green Chamber, Congressman Philip Agbese has said. President Tinubu’s loan request was contained in a letter transmitted to the parliament and read by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, during Tuesday’s plenary. If approved, the President said the loan would fund the N9.7tn deficit in the 2024 budget. The Senate has already approved the loan request, with the House expected to debate same ahead of its approval later in the week. Speaking exclusively with The PUNCH on Sunday, the Benue lawmaker who doubles as the Deputy Chairman, the Committee on Media and Publicity, advanced reasons the House will not hesitate to follow the footsteps of the Senate in granting the request of the President to borrow externally to fund the budget deficit. According to him, the House will approve the loan request as long as it is meant for the execution of capital projects across the country as stipulated in the letter transmitted to the National Assembly by the President. “The Tinubu-led government has been prudent with our resources. We will approve the loan request without hesitation,” he said, adding that the request will be treated in conformity with standing procedures. “I can tell you that the relevant Standing Committees have commenced scrutiny of the loan request ahead of the consideration by the House. But I assure Nigerians that as their representatives, we will abide by strict standard procedures in doing our job as far as this request is concerned,” he said. Debt burden Although Nigeria’s total public debt currently stands at N136tn, Agbese justified the President’s quest to borrow more, saying, “The kind of critical infrastructure we have seen the current government investing their scarce resources on are encouraging. From the Honourable Minister of Finance to the Accountant General’s Office, we have seen fiscal policies that aim to safeguard taxpayers’ resources.” He added that just as past approvals by the parliament were done in line with due consultation with other relevant stakeholders and experts, “The situation would not be different this time.” On what has changed since the inauguration of the incumbent All Progressives Congress-led administration, Agbese who represents Ado/Ogbadibo/Okpokwu Federal Constituency of Benue State, noted that “the executive is enhancing our budget system in terms of priorities.” While declaring that “it may not be far from the truth that past administrations took foreign loans to spend on disposables,” he insisted that “the 10th parliament is carrying out its oversight functions to see that every penny counts in the overall interest of our people.” ‘Govs change stand’ Reacting to an exclusive report by The PUNCH quoting some lawmakers saying that some state governors appeared to have changed their rigid stand on Tinubu’s tax reform bill, now before the parliament for consideration, the lawmaker added that the resilience of legislators may have informed the development. “Many (governors) are doing so because they have seen the resilience of the parliament to do what is right for Nigerians. This is what you get where there’s patriotism above personal and selfish interest of just a few entities. “The House of Representatives under the leadership of Rt Hon Tajudeen Abass has done something novel and Nigerians are equally commending his leadership. There’s no doubt that our approach to inviting the key drivers of the tax reforms in Nigeria and doing so at the same time with our in-house experts, has changed the narrative completely in Nigeria,” he added. In a veiled jibe at former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who in July described the National Assembly as an enabler of executive recklessness, Agbese said Nigerians “don’t take him seriously, so, the parliament won’t be bothered about his opinion which was probably expressed from abroad or somewhere in Dubai. “The only time that politician won an election was when another candidate from the south carried him on his back as a running mate. The only thing he sees about Nigeria is when an election will take place.” The lawmaker assured Nigerians that when granted, the loan would be used for the intended purpose, saying, “The House of Representatives will ensure that such monies if approved are not diverted. What we understand the President is doing is repositioning critical institutions for optimum performance as well as delivering on infrastructure that will stand the test of time. “It’s possible to extend the lifespan of the 2024 budget to ensure that ongoing critical projects receive the desired attention and are completed.” Also speaking, an APC lawmaker from Imo State, Chike Okafor, said the loan request by the President was in order. He said, “Our country in the past years suffered from under-investment in the very critical sectors that stimulate the economy. How much of our resources go to funding/financing infrastructure in such critical things like roads, health, education, and agriculture? Any economy that fails to sustain good investment in the above critical sections of the economy is creating short and long-term deficits in those areas. “What do you do if/when your current revenue and receipts are inadequate to fund the necessary and required investments necessary to sustain the stimulation of your commerce and economy? You resort to borrowing, especially if/when you reserve the capacity to do so.” He added, “What I do not support is borrowing to fund ordinary appetite. By this, I mean borrowing just to fund recurrent expenditures. Once a borrowing is geared towards the funding of critical capital items, then we’re moving in the right direction.” Minority caucus warns Meanwhile, the minority caucus of the House of Representatives has warned that the provision for deficit financing in the 2024 budget is not automatic, … Read more

Herdsmen Killed 67 Of My Subjects And Destroyed My Farmland – Benue Monarch

The paramount ruler of Tyoshin Kingdom in Benue State, HRH Ayua Abomtse, has raised alarm over the persistent attacks by armed herdsmen in his domain. The royal father lamented that the assailants had killed 67 of his subjects since January 2024 and recently destroyed over 20 hectares of his farmland, cultivated with guinea corn and cassava, worth millions of Naira. Speaking in a telephone interview, the Ter Tyoshin disclosed that the armed herdsmen invaded his farm near Mbakpa Forest along the Naka-Agagbe road, wreaking havoc without restraint. He expressed concern over the impunity exhibited by the herders in Gwer West and other parts of the country, where killings and farm destruction occur unchecked. The monarch warned that the country was reaching a critical breaking point if urgent action was not taken to address the activities of the armed herdsmen. “In my domain alone, they have killed about 67 persons from January 2024 to Saturday, November 23. I have been documenting these tragedies, with Nagi village recording the highest casualties,” he revealed. He accused security forces, particularly the military operation “Operation Whirl Stroke,” of turning a blind eye to the killings and destruction, suggesting that their inactivity had rendered them ineffective. HRH Abomtse appealed to President Bola Tinubu’s administration to introduce state policing, arguing that local communities would be better equipped to protect themselves against such threats. “The time has come for the Federal Government to establish state police so that communities can police themselves. It should start at the council ward level to effectively curb the activities of these terrorists masquerading as herdsmen,” he stressed. The royal father urged the Federal Government to proscribe the unlawful activities of the armed herdsmen, labeling them as terrorists. He also called on the Inspector General of Police to establish a police unit in Nagi village to safeguard the lives and property of his people. “My people are living at the mercy of killer herdsmen. The government must act decisively to end this nightmare,” he added. HRH Ayua Abomtse’s plea underscores the dire security challenges faced by communities in Benue State, highlighting the urgent need for proactive measures to restore safety and peace in the region.
