‘I’m Hungry, Depressed, Battling Debt’ — Gospel Singer, Busola Oke Opens Up on Financial Struggles

Gospel singer Busola Oke has revealed that she is facing severe financial difficulties and is considering quitting the music industry due to mounting pressure. The singer who became emotional during a recent live session on TikTok, spoke about the challenges of sustaining a livelihood through gospel music. In a separate interview with Biola Bayo which was shared on Instagram on Wednesday, Oke said her breakdown was triggered by loneliness, depression, frustration and financial hardship. She disclosed that she has not owned a car since 2020 and is struggling to repay debts. “I cried on my live video because I was lonely, depressed, frustrated, and hungry. I didn’t ask for help from people because that is not who I am. I kept quiet about my situation since 2020 because I didn’t want people to pity or mock me. I know a lot of people, but nobody helped me. At a point, I couldn’t pay my house rent again, which was N1 million, and I was struggling to eat. “Right now, I have no car, and I owe a lot of people. The last time I had a car was in 2020. I need to pay my debts. I struggle to pay for the hotel I stay at now. I need shelter and a car, even if it is a jalopy. The money I am supposed to use for food, I use it to take Uber around,” she lamented.

2027: Kwankwaso, Makinde Hold Closed-door Meeting

The 2023 presidential candidate and the national leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party, Dr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, on Wednesday, met Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, behind closed doors at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan. Although the outcome of the meeting was not made known to the public, it was believed that it was not unconnected with consolidating the existing age-long cordial ties between Kwankwaso and Makinde. Among Kwankwaso’s entourage were NNPP’s National Chairman, Dr Ajid Ahmed, the National Publicity Secretary, Najipo Johnson, and other Party’s top echelon. Speaking with newsmen after the meeting, Kwankwaso disclosed that he was in Ibadan mainly to inaugurate the NNPP’s new state office as part of efforts aimed at strengthening the party’s structure and unity in Oyo State ahead of the 2027 general election. He added that the meeting with Makinde transcended partisan considerations. “I am here in Ibadan together with the national chairman of our party, NNPP, Dr Ajid Ahmed, and other party officials to open our office here and discuss important issues relating to our party in Oyo State. “But before proceeding to the party office, I felt it was important to pay a courtesy visit to the governor, who has always been our friend. This visit is more about personal friendship than party politics,” he said. Kwankwaso, who recognised Makinde’s membership of the Peoples Democratic Party, admitted that he also had deep roots in the PDP before his eventual defection. He said, “In fact, we formed the PDP in 1998. By 1999, I was elected Governor of Kano State under the PDP and later served as Minister of Defence. “I also returned to Kano under the PDP and served in various national and international capacities, including as an envoy in Darfur and Somalia.” Kwankwaso recalled that he later joined the All Progressives Congress before aligning with the NNPP, where he is currently serving as the national leader. The former Kano State governor thereafter inaugurated the party’s office in Ibadan. According to him, the inauguration was to establish the party’s presence in the state capital, ahead of the 2027 general election. Kwankwaso recently lost his political godson and the governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf, to the ruling APC. There were also reports that the former Kano State governor may join the ADC ahead of the 2027 election. Kwankwaso has, however, stated that he would join any political party that would offer him a presidential or vice presidential ticket. Speaking on the defection of Governor Yusuf to the APC, Kwankwaso said the NNPP would ensure the governor did not return in 2027. The visit to Makinde, political pundits believed, was part of broader consultations and realignments ahead of the 2027 general election.

25 Killed in Jihadist Attacks in Northeast Nigeria – Report

At least 25 people were killed in two separate jihadist attacks in northeastern Nigeria’s Adamawa state, local sources told AFP on Thursday. The attacks in the towns of Madagali and Hong in the border region with Cameroon were attributed to Boko Haram jihadists, whose fighters have been active in the area since the group began its violent insurgency in 2009. “Gunmen, we believed to be Boko Haram on many motorcycles… attacked the market. They opened fire on people and killed 21,” a Madagali local government official told AFP about the Tuesday evening attack, on the condition of anonymity. “We are still searching for more bodies as some might have died in the bush from gunshot wounds while trying to find safety.” The attackers also looted a market and stole food items and motorcycles, the source said. Four others, including three troops, were killed in neighbouring Hong, resident Ezekiel Musa told AFP. “Boko Haram attacked us after they left the town. We saw the corpses of three soldiers and one woman was killed,” Musa said. “Now the town has security personnel but some of us have already started leaving the town because of fear of what happened.” – ‘Senseless attacks’ – State governor Adamu Umaru Fintiri condemned the attack without providing an official toll in a statement. “We will not let terrorists undermine our efforts to restore peace and stability,” he said in the statement. “I warn perpetrators: desist from these senseless attacks or face the full weight of our collective resolve.” Since 2009, the jihadist insurgency in Nigeria, led primarily by Boko Haram and its rival faction, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), has left more than 40,000 dead and two million displaced in the northeast of the country, according to the United Nations. Nigeria is also grappling with other armed groups that have compounded its insecurity challenges in the north of the country. Military crackdowns have yielded little results. The jihadist conflict has spread to neighbouring Niger, Chad, and Cameroon, prompting the formation of a regional military coalition to fight these groups. The coalition has lost steam in recent years after the withdrawal of Niger due to a diplomatic spat with Nigeria following a 2023 military coup in Niger. Earlier this month, the United States began deploying troops to Nigeria to provide technical and training support to the country’s soldiers in fighting the jihadist groups. The US Africa Command said 200 troops were expected to join the deployment overall. AFP

UCL: Atlético Progress to last 16 after 4-1 Win over Club Brugge

Alexander Sørloth scored a hat-trick as Atlético Madrid defeated Club Brugge 4-1 in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League knockout play-off on Tuesday, progressing 7-4 on aggregate. Atlético created the first clear opportunity when Giuliano Simeone connected with a cross, but no foul was awarded after a VAR check involving goalkeeper Simon Mignolet. The hosts took the lead midway through the first half after Sørloth turned Brandon Mechele and his shot went past Mignolet. Brugge responded before the break. Mechele flicked on a corner into the path of Joel Ordóñez, who scored to level the tie on aggregate again. The visitors nearly added another soon after, but Jan Oblak saved Hugo Vetlesen’s effort to keep the score level at half-time. Atlético regained the lead early in the second half through Johnny Cardoso, whose strike from outside the box beat Mignolet. Brugge continued to press, but Oblak dealt with their attempts, including a long-range effort from Christos Tzolis. Sørloth scored his second after a move involving substitutes Ademola Lookman and Antoine Griezmann, before completing his hat-trick late on from a corner to confirm Atlético’s progression. Atlético are now unbeaten in regulation time in their last 20 Champions League knockout matches, recording 13 wins and seven draws. They will face either Liverpool or Tottenham Hotspur in the Round of 16, with the draw scheduled for Friday.

FCT Poll: INEC Dismisses Claims of Result Manipulation

The Independent National Electoral Commission has debunked claims of result manipulation at the Kuroko Health Centre polling unit in Yangoji Ward, Kwali Area Council, following the Saturday Area Council elections in the Federal Capital Territory. In a statement on Tuesday signed by INEC FCT Office Resident Electoral Commissioner, Aminu K. Idris, the commission said the viral figure of 1,219 votes for a political party was incorrect and misleading. “The official result recorded and uploaded from the said polling unit shows that the political party in question scored 121 votes, not 1,219 as alleged on social media,” the statement read. The clarification followed reports suggesting that the polling unit, which has 345 registered voters and 213 accredited voters, produced a mathematically impossible figure. According to the statement, the discrepancy arose from a simple human error by the presiding officer. The officer recounted the ballots and initially entered “122” for the party, later correcting it to 121 after a recount in the open. “She cancelled the ‘2’ at the end and slotted in a ‘1’ in front of the cancelled ‘2’ to make it 121. She also corrected the figures in words,” the INEC statement said. The commission stressed that technological safeguards within its Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the INEC Result Viewing Portal make such manipulation impossible. “The number of accredited voters was 213. The score entered into the BVAS for the party concerned was 121. The total votes recorded were consistent with accreditation figures,” the statement added. It also noted that any attempt to enter a figure like 1,219 would have been automatically flagged and rejected by the system. INEC further assured the public that all results used for collation at the ward and area council levels were consistent with the BVAS data and that the FCT elections were conducted in substantial compliance with the Electoral Act and INEC guidelines. “The Commission urges members of the public and media commentators to verify information with official records before drawing conclusions capable of eroding public confidence in the electoral process,” the statement said. The electoral body reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and accountability, stating that genuine errors are investigated and corrected immediately. “However, the present allegations are based on genuine errors which were immediately corrected; the misinterpretation of figures does not reflect the official record used in collating and declaring the results,” the statement concluded

WHO Probes Hydrocarbon Exposure in Ogoniland, Screens 4,000

The World Health Organisation has begun a comprehensive health study of Ogoniland, Rivers State, to investigate the prevalence of ailments associated with long-term exposure to hydrocarbons. This initiative aligns with the recommendations of the United Nations Environment Programme report, which called for a follow-up health study to complement the environmental remediation of the oil-devastated area. The health study is being conducted by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, an agency under WHO. The Project Coordinator of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project, Prof. Nenibarini Zabbey, had in July 2025 stated that the agency commissioned WHO to carry out the study as part of the ongoing implementation of the UNEP report. Speaking during a visit to the traditional rulers of Gokana and Tai local government areas on Tuesday, Lead Scientist of IARC, Ann Olysson, said the study is part of the UNEP recommendations for Ogoni. She stated, “We are about, with your permission, to begin a study that was originally recommended by the UNEP study. We are in collaboration with HYPREP to conduct the tests, and the choice of our agency to conduct the study is in international recognition for this type of research.” Project Coordinator of UNEP and the lead researcher of the 2009–2011 study, Mr Michael Cowing, which led to the report, said one of the key recommendations was this health assessment of the Ogoni population. Cowing further said the study, which is expected to last nearly three years, began in mid-2025 with desk work, mapping, and preliminary research. He noted that the study will cover 4,000 participants across both the most impacted and non-impacted communities to ascertain results. “And now, with your approval, we are going to engage in the fieldwork. Simply put, across Ogoniland, we’re looking to have approximately 4,000 participants representing the most impacted communities. “We know where the epicentres of contamination are. We’ve plotted the communities on those maps, and they will be the impacted communities where we will focus the study. But we are also conducting studies in unimpacted communities for comparison. “We will be looking at people involved in specific activities, whether farming, fishing, sand mining, or artisanal refining, to assess different levels of exposure to hydrocarbons. So it’s going to be a very comprehensive study,” he said. Professor Iyenemi Kakulu, of the Department of Land Management at Rivers State University, said participants will be scientifically selected for the study. Kakulu stated, “We are here on a friendly note to ask for your support, to grant us access to your kingdom, so that we can interact with your people and intentionally select participants for the study. “Basically, we will speak to people in their homes in some scientifically selected communities. We will seek your permission to speak with community chiefs and gain access to conduct our work. “We are also interested in occupational hazards. People exposed by the nature of their work in and around Ogoniland will be subjects of interest. We will talk to them and seek their voluntary consent to participate in the study, which involves collecting some personal data and human samples, such as blood and urine.” Earlier, HYPREP Project Coordinator Prof. Nenibarini Zabbey, represented by the Director of Technical Services, Prof. Damian Paul-Aguiyi, told the traditional councils that the delegation sought support for adequate security, sensitisation, and collaboration. He emphasised that the study is not a contracted job and called on the traditional rulers to provide an enabling environment for the team to carry out their work. Responding, the King of Tai Kingdom, HRM Samuel Nnee, assured the delegation of the support of his people. He noted that before the advent of oil exploration, the Ogonis—and indeed Africans—lived longer. The monarch said, “Whatever support you need, I can assure you that you will have it because we are talking about the health of our people.” Nnee added that initially, the people doubted that HYPREP would carry out the remediation. “But I can tell you the truth—we have seen results. HYPREP went beyond cleaning the soil and implemented livelihood programs that have reawakened the potential of our children. “Today, our children are thriving in every sphere of life. If you see the programs packaged by HYPREP, you will marvel that Ogoni sons and daughters are now licensed to do many things we never imagined years ago.” He continued, “So I want to welcome you. I pray God continues to bless this initiative. I’ve been part of this process and will continue to be, because it is my responsibility to speak for my people.” On his part, the King and Natural Ruler of Gokana Kingdom, HRM Festus Paago Bagia (Gberesaakoo XIII), represented by the Traditional Ruler of Goi community, Mene Stephen Kobani, assured the visiting team of the support of his people, describing the study as a welcome development.
