Peter Obi Denies 2027 Merger Deal With PDP, NNPP

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, has denied any merger talks with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) or any other party. Obi made this statement during a press conference in Abuja on Thursday morning, where he addressed the state of the nation. The former Anambra Governor emphasised that no agreement has been reached with any party as of now. He also called on all Nigerians to unite ahead of the 2027 elections ilto defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Obi expressed deep concerns over the country’s security situation, describing it as tragic. In the 2023 presidential election, Tinubu came out tops in 12 of Nigeria’s 36 States and garnered significant numbers in other states to claim the highest number of votes—8,794,726, almost two million votes more than his closest rival, Atiku Abubakar of the PDP.

Court Orders Detention Of Activist Shehu Mahdi Over Fake French Military Base Claim

A chief magistrate court sitting in Kaduna on Tuesday ordered the remand in the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Kaduna, of self-styled activist and public commentator, Shehu Mahdi. Mahdi was arrested a few days ago by officers of the Department of State Services after he rebuffed pleas to pull down inciting videos he posted online claiming that President Bola Tinubu granted France the approval to set up a military base in northern Nigeria. Mahdi’s narrative came on the heels of a related claim by the military leader of Niger Republic, Abdourahamane Tchiani, that France set up a military base in northern Nigeria. Mahdi blamed Tinubu for endorsing the deal in a viral tweet. Both Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and Minister of Information, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, have since debunked the claims as baseless. On Tuesday, the DSS arraigned Mahdi before Magistrate Abubakar Lamido on a two-count charge of conspiracy, aiding and abetting terrorism, which the agency said is contrary to Section 26(2)(3) of the Terrorism (Prevention & Prohibition) Act, 2022 and Inciting Public Disturbances Contrary to Section 78 of the Penal Code Law of Kaduna State, 2017. “In his ruling, Magistrate Lamido held that Mahdi remains in a correctional facility in Kaduna until January 14, 2025, for further hearing on the matter,” a statement made available by the DSS read. The video clips posted by Mahdi have since been fact-checked by several media organisations, including Daily Trust and The Cable, and found to be 2013 video footages of Nigerian soldiers at Bamako Airport, Mali, during their deployment for an African Union Peacekeeping Mission in Northern Mali. Hackers Can Now Use Phone Cameras To Steal Cars – Expert

A United States-based Nigerian expert in the automotive manufacturing industry, Sunday Aluko, has raised the alarm that hackers are now stealing cars using just a phone camera. Speaking with our correspondent on Wednesday, Aluko emphasised the urgent need for car manufacturers and owners to adopt robust cybersecurity measures to combat this evolving crime. He noted that with modern vehicles relying heavily on electronic systems, car thieves now exploit vulnerabilities that require no physical tampering. The expert said, “By simply capturing the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) displayed on a car’s windshield, they can duplicate keys with an automated VIN to key tools, bypass security systems, and steal vehicles within seconds “The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a unique 17-character code stamped on every vehicle, providing essential information such as make, model, and manufacturing history. While the VIN is critical for legitimate purposes like recalls and repairs, it has become a tool for criminals in the digital age,” he stated. He added that while the VIN is critical for legitimate purposes like recalls and repairs, it has become a tool for criminals in the digital age. Aluko further explained how snapping a photo of the VIN allows hackers to automate key cutting, clone electronic key fobs and exploit a vehicle’s electronic systems. This method, he said required no broken windows, no tampered wires and no physical struggle. He noted that today’s car thieves operate discreetly, even in crowded spaces, leveraging technology to execute thefts swiftly. He stated, “This is a global threat. All a hacker needs is your VIN to bypass security systems and drive away with your car in seconds. “As vehicle technology advances globally, so do the tactics of cybercriminals. “In 2023, reports from cybersecurity agencies in Europe and North America revealed a sharp rise in VIN-based car thefts. Countries like Germany and Japan are already addressing these vulnerabilities through stricter regulations and enhanced cybersecurity protocols. However, the global automotive industry faces a significant challenge in staying ahead of these threats.” To mitigate the risk of VIN-based car theft, Aluko highlighted the importance of concealing the VIN displayed on dashboards, particularly in public spaces. He also recommended additional security measures such as steering wheel locks, storing wireless key fobs in protective pouches and ensuring vehicle software is regularly updated to patch vulnerabilities. He emphasised the need for automakers to enhance encryption protocols and implement robust cybersecurity frameworks in vehicle design. He also called on policymakers to introduce regulations that mandate stronger security features in cars. “All it takes is a photo of your license plate or VIN for a hacker to compromise your car’s security. “Automakers and owners must work together to safeguard vehicles. Awareness and proactive measures are key,” Aluko warned. Aluko urged stakeholders to prioritise cybersecurity, saying, “The rise in VIN-based car theft highlights the urgency for global action. It’s not just about protecting assets; it’s about securing the future of transportation.” He also urged car owners to be vigilant “While technology has made our lives easier, it has also introduced new risks. Protecting your vehicle begins with awareness and taking simple preventive steps,” he urged. Punch

I Brought You Back To Life Politically, Wike Slams Odili

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Sunday, came down hard on ex-Rivers State Governor, Peter Odili, describing him as a rent seeker and an ingrate for siding with incumbent Governor Siminalayi Fubara. Wike was reacting to Odili’s recent remark that Fubara stopped him (Wike) from turning Rivers into his private estate. According to a statement on Sunday by his media aide, Leke Olayinka, Wike spoke at a Special Thanksgiving Service organised by factional Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, at the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Oro-Igwe/Eliogbolo Archdeaconry Church of the Holy Spirit, Eliozu Parish, Port Harcourt. Wike, who tagged Odili an ingrate, narrated how he built a house for the former governor, adding that Odili also had some of his family members occupying positions in the Rivers State government, turning Rivers into his personal estate. “Must you be a trader all the time? As governor for eight years, what else are you looking for? You know, I didn’t want to say anything. But somebody called me last night, and told me what someone said in the social media. I said until I read it myself. This morning, I read in the newspapers, what our former Governor, Sir Dr Peter Odili said”. “What did he say? He said that the present governor has been able to stop one man who wanted to convert Rivers State to his personal estate. Between him and myself, who has turned Rivers State to his personal estate? His wife is a Chairman of Governing Council, his daughter is a commissioner, his other daughter is a judge and he is the general overseer. Who has now turned Rivers State to his private estate? I am sure if care is not taken, if there is a chance, he can even arrange a marriage for the governor”. “In 2007 after he left office, he couldn’t come near power in the State because Amaechi was the governor then. He was gone! Like somebody said that God will use someone to lift up someone. When I came in as governor in 2015, I won’t use the word resurrected, but I brought him back to life,” Wike said. The Minister also said that Odili had equally also praised him as better than the past governors in the state, stating that the former Governor reduced himself to a laughing stock. “All of you here remember when I was governor, this same Odili praised me to high heaven. In fact, he said then that all past governors in Rivers State combined did not do better than me. Now, because you have organized a Christmas Carol for the governor, I didn’t say you should not do your Christmas Carol. But why reduce yourself to such a laughing stock. People will still see it on television how he was telling the whole world then how God used me to bring him back to life politically”. “The governor that all of us made has not spent one year in office and the same Odili was already saying that the governor has beaten the records of all the past governors of Rivers State. When I was there, he said I had surpassed the records of all the past governors, including himself. What can he even show that he did in his eight years as governor? But a governor has not spent one year, you are saying he has done more than all the past governors”. The Minister also stated that the former Governor has no achievements in his eight years as governor, adding that he failed in his Presidency bid, and that former Governor Odili had opposed the emergency of Fubara as Rivers State Governor. “You spent eight years as governor and someone who hasn’t spent one year has surpassed your records, what manner of elder talks like that? Is that what an elder statesman should be known for? “When I was plotting who will be governor after me, was he (Odili) there? Then, he was complaining about this governor, saying that he couldn’t stand before the public to talk. But today, he is organising Christmas Carol for the same governor he was against then. “He has forgotten all that he said in the past. I named this after you, I named that after your wife. What have I not done? This is a man who wanted to run for President then, he didn’t have the balls, he chickened out. Simply because Obasanjo said no, he will not contest, he ran away. Because of him, I never invited Obasanjo to Rivers State to inaugurate projects. I felt it would humiliate him,” Wike said Punch

Customs Announces Auction of Seized Petrol at ₦400 Per Litre

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced plans to auction 15,325 litres of seized Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, at ₦400 per litre to help ease transportation challenges during the festive season. Hussein Ejibunu, National Coordinator of the service’s Operation Whirlwind, made this announcement on Saturday during a press briefing at the Customs Training College in Ikeja, Lagos. Ejibunu revealed that the seized petrol, valued at ₦27.5 million, was confiscated during operations conducted in Lagos and Ogun states. He stated that Adewale Adeniyi, Comptroller-General of Customs, has authorized the auction, pricing the fuel at ₦10,000 per 25-litre container. The coordinator further explained that all legal and procedural requirements, including a court condemnation order, have been finalized by the office of the legal adviser to facilitate the auction process. “This operation, which began on May 27, 2024, has delivered positive results,” Ejibunu said. “The Comptroller-General has directed the operatives to sustain this momentum until the activities of economic saboteurs are completely eradicated in the country.” He added, “In line with this directive, the CGC has approved the auctioning of the seized petrol to the public at a rate of ₦10,000 per 25 litres. This measure aims to alleviate transportation difficulties during the festive period.”

NCC Dismisses Telecom Tariff Hike Rumors, Assures Consumers

The Nigerian Communications Commission has dismissed claims of a telecommunications tariff hike allegedly set to take effect in January 2025. The Commission described the reports as false and unfounded, urging subscribers to disregard the misinformation. A senior NCC official, speaking to PUNCH on Sunday, emphasised that the regulatory body operates under a transparent framework guided by the Nigerian Communications Act. According to the official, this framework requires stakeholder consultations and strict adherence to due process before any tariff adjustments are approved. “These rumours are baseless and misleading. The NCC is committed to protecting consumers and ensuring that any potential tariff changes are communicated clearly and transparently,” the official stated. “Subscribers can rest assured that no tariff increase has been approved,” he added. The NCC also appealed to journalists and industry stakeholders to verify information before publication, stressing the importance of accurate reporting to avoid unnecessary public panic. Reiterating its commitment to consumer interests and the stability of the telecommunications industry, the Commission assured Nigerians that updates on tariffs or related matters would always be communicated through official channels. The Association of Telephone, Cable TV, and Internet Subscribers of Nigeria also addressed the rumours. Speaking in Lagos, ATCIS National President, Mr Sina Bilesanmi, stated that the association sought clarification directly from the NCC on December 24, 2024. “The NCC confirmed there is no truth to claims of call charges increasing to N15.40 per minute from N11, SMS charges rising to N5.60, or 1GB of data costing N1,400 instead of N1,000. “Any changes in tariffs, if necessary, will follow due process and involve input from all stakeholders, including ATCIS. There is no cause for alarm,” Bilesanmi said. Both the NCC and ATCIS emphasised their commitment to consumer protection and urged subscribers to rely on verified information from credible sources. 12,000 Supporters Of Ooni’s Ex- Queen Demand Justice After Video Reveals Government Awareness Of Funfair

No fewer than 12,000 supporters of Prophetess Naomi Ogunwusi, the estranged wife of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, have demanded justice for her, describing her arrest, arraignment and remand in a custodial facility as unfair. Naomi was arrested alongside the Chief Executive Officer of Agidigbo FM, Oriyomi Hamzat, after the stampede at a funfair they organised in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, turned tragic, claiming the lives of 35 children on December 18, 2024. The prophetess, Hamzat, and the Principal of Islamic High School, Ibadan, where the event was held, Fasasi Abdullahi, are currently remanded at the Agodi Custodial Centre by Chief Magistrate Olabisi Ogunkanmi of Magistrate’s Court 1, Iyaganku, Ibadan. The defendants were arraigned on four counts bordering on conspiracy, causing death by negligence, endangering public safety, and failing to provide adequate security and medical facilities at the event. Naomi, Hamzat, and Abdullahi pleaded not guilty to the charges. The ex-queen had planned to host 5,000 children, aged 0-13, across Ibadan for free under the aegis of the Women in Need of Guidance and Support Foundation with the funfair. The programme was scheduled to start at 10 am, while police were expected to be at the venue by 8 am. Reports indicated that the event was initially planned for 5,000 children, but over 7,500 children showed up. Sunday PUNCH gathered that the stampede occurred as children and their parents attempted to break through the main gate and scale the school fence to enter the venue at all costs. Naomi and Hamzat have been in custody since the incident turned disastrous. However, the ex-queen’s supporters continue to call for her release, arguing that she was carrying out a charitable programme to bring smiles to the faces of underprivileged children. Thousands of Naomi’s supporters signed an online petition to demand fairness in the judicial process concerning her matter. The petition, which started on Thursday, had gathered 12,000 signatures as of the time of filing this report on Saturday. The originator of the petition, Yetunde Ola, stated that Naomi’s actions were driven by an earnest intention to alleviate the suffering of hungry children, but she found herself “unfairly entangled in a web of legal accusations that were both disheartening and misplaced.” “We, the supporters of Queen Naomi, are seeking justice. It is paramount that her court cases are addressed with utmost impartiality and integrity. We must hold our judicial systems accountable for their actions and ensure that they remain transparent, fair and unbiased in their proceedings. “Our plea is, thus, simple: Give Queen Silekunola Naomi a fair trial, unaffected by bias and calumny. We present this petition to highlight the necessity for a just legal process that respects the evidence and operates in compliance with the principles of justice. “We reinforce our commitment to stand by Queen Naomi, championing justice, fairness, and truth,” she said. This was as her mother, Funmilayo Ogunseyi, called on President Bola Tinubu and well-meaning Nigerians to intervene in her daughter’s legal troubles. In an emotional video that has gone viral, Ogunseyi claimed that her daughter’s predicament was orchestrated by “powerful persons.” “They say her ordeal is an ‘order from above.’ Please, I beg those in power to release her. She is not a killer; she came to help. Naomi is fragile and sick. President Tinubu, I beg you, come to our aid,” she implored. The sentiments shared by Naomi’s supporters and her mother re-echoed insinuations that the ex-queen was being persecuted with her arrest and remand. However, the Oyo State Government stated that there was no reason to persecute the prophetess. Speaking with Sunday PUNCH, the state Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, said those spreading such insinuations would be unfair if they expected the government to interfere with the judicial process. He also denied that the government knew about the programme. He said, “It is a laughable insinuation. What is the motive for victimising the lady? We barely know her name. The government does not know anything about her apart from the normal stuff on social media. We have no relationship with her in any manner. There is no altar of political conflict or anything that looks like it between the Oyo State Government and the woman. “The government did not officially know anything about her enterprise, what she does, or what she planned to do in Oyo State. We were not formally notified because there is no documentation to show that the government was given notification of what she wanted to do through the normal time-tested processes. So, she remained an unknown quantity and faceless to this administration. “Are they asking us to meddle with the judiciary? A case was taken to court. Even a government official, the principal of a secondary school, was equally arraigned and detained because 35 of our children died. “And there are no draconian issues extraneous to a normal course of justice on the ground. “So, we will advise, therefore, that those who are engaged in such meddlesomeness allow the course of justice to prevail. That is the beauty of democracy. No matter whose ox is gored, for democracy to survive and thrive, justice must take its course.” However, a video of a meeting between the Oyo State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Toyin Balogun, and Naomi has surfaced online. The meeting was held a day before the programme. In the video, Balogun is seen and heard asking the ex-queen about the programme. After Naomi explained, the commissioner promised to attend the event. Balogun said, “It is a fantastic intervention, I must say. It’s laudable to have an aspiration to put smiles on the faces of children, particularly the ones I call the special children. You are probably going to have to do this again next year; you are probably going to have to come back. “On behalf of the Oyo State Government, on behalf of the Ministry of Women Affairs, we will be looking forward to doing something collaborative for both the women and the children in … Read more
